Hou, Aili. "Analysis of the deflections, vibrations, and stability of leaning arches." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45088.

Abstract:
<p>In recent years, leaning arches have been used in frameworks for some tent structures. Various people have studied the behavior of a single vertical arch; however, only a few researchers have considered the three-dimensional behavior of arches and leaning arches. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the three-dimensional nonlinear behavior of leaning arches, particularly the load-deflection and load-frequency relationships, and to provide a basis for future design guidelines. In this study, vertical arches of different shapes and load combinations are analyzed in order to compa

Hansen, Eric. "Empirically derived dimensions of quality for softwood lumber." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/37255.

Full text
Abstract:
Quality perceptions of three major softwood lumber consumers: wood treaters, truss manufacturers, and home centers were investigated to determine their definition of softwood lumber quality. Data was gathered through a mail survey of buyers in each of the three groups. In total, 867 responses were received. Respondents rated the importance of product and service characteristics to quality. These characteristics were based on dimensions of product quality developed by Garvin (1984) and dimensions of service quality developed by Parasuraman et aI. (1988). A total of 80 product and service qua

Hunt, Michelle R. "The screening of new product concepts: information use and the effects of experience and expertise." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40126.

Full text
Abstract:
The effects of experience and expertise on managers' search for information while screening new product concepts were investigated using a computer interactive screening simulation. Relationships between respondents' attributions about product success and failure, their judgments of the diagnosticity (predictive usefulness) of different types of information, and information search were also investigated. Sixty-two respondents from the microcomputer software industry and the pharmaceutical industry were involved in the study. They searched for information about three new product concepts, then

Hoe, Ruan. "Is migration a solution to the earnings loss of the displaced workers in the segmented labor market in the U.S.?" Diss., Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40157.

Full text
Abstract:
Earnings loss due to both lower wages at the current job and the time forgone between two jobs is one of the major consequences of job displacement caused by plant closing, moving and downsizing in the 1980s. Is migration a solution? The present study attempts to answer this question empirically by exploring five waves of data on the displaced manufacturing workers from the CPS Displaced Workers Supplements. Human capital theory and neo-classica1 theory of labor migration both assert that migration should improve people's socio-economic status. They largely neglect social and economic structu
