For the theoretical portion, a generalized plane strain elasticity analysis was developed. The analysis included mechanical and thermal loading and temperature-dependent material properties. Using the elasticity analysis and a temperature range of 116 K to 450 K, stress levels were found to be high for the specific designs considered, compared to material failure levels.
A new solvent extraction method has been developed for the extraction of metal and organic ions from very dilute aqueous solutions. The new method, which has been named Predispersed Solvent Extraction (POSE), is based on the principle that 1 there is no need to comminute both phases. All that is necessary is to comminute the solvent phase prior to contacting it with the feed. This is done by converting the solvent into aphrons, which are micron-sized globules encapsulated in a soapy film. Load weight is the focal point of the attention received by log hauling. The optimization of load weights is therefore very important to a logging operation's success and this can be achieved only through adequate gross vehicle weight control. Methods of load weight control are reviewed and possible applications discussed in this report. Studies were conducted to evaluate the adequacy of load weight control achieved utilizing two quite different methods.

Abstract:
Experiments were conducted on the effectiveness of exposure to simultaneous temperature shock with chlorination, monochloramine, and ammonia as control agents of the Asiatic clam, Corbicula sp. Control procedures were evaluated based on lethal and sublethal responses (e.g., glycogen, tissue water, dry weight index, and siphoning activity) of clams during 30-day laboratory artificial stream studies. Studies also were conducted comparing sublethal responses (e.g., glycogen, tissue water, soluble protein, and siphoning activity) of clams to copper, a component of power plant effluents, during 30-

Jensen, Anne J. "A life cycle value assessment model for design, production, and logistic support systems." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45785.

Abstract:
A new economic model for the evaluation of integrated Design, Production, and Logistic Support Systems (DPLSSs) is designed and developed in this thesis. The DPLSS model was created after a survey of Life Cycle Costing (LCC) applications revealed that no models for assessing integrated design, production, and logistic support systems were available. The evaluation technique the model is based on is called Life Cycle Value Assessment (LCVA). LCVA differs from LCC in that it emphasizes consideration of life cycle revenues as well as costs.

The system addressed by the DPLSS model h

Abstract:

An analytical model was developed to simulate the stress state of notched tensile specimens. Actual experiments are being carried out by other investigators to study the relaxation of residual stresses in specimens containing stress raisers. In the present work, the stress state developed in notched tensile specimens was assessed by determining the response of the stress state in the form of x-ray line profiles; this is useful in the understanding and measurement of effects due to such stress states obtained in actual experiments. Abstract:

A test fixture for combined tension-compression cyclic testing of unidirectional composites was designed and characterized using 606l-O aluminum specimens. The elastoplastic response of graphite/aluminum l5° off-axis and 90° specimens under tension-compression cyclic loading was subsequently investigated at three temperatures, -l50°F, room temperature and 250°F. The test results showed that the tensile response was predominantly elastoplastic, whereas the compressive response could not be characterized exclusively on the basis of the classical plasticity theory. Oliveira, Willer de. "Star-like macromers from lignin." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/43255.

Abstract:
Star-like macromers were prepared from hydroxypropyl lignin by reaction with propylene oxide. The average number of arms per macromer was controlled by partial capping with diethylsulfate, and the average arm length by the degree of chain extension with propylene oxide. Six methods of analysis were applied for characterizing of the star-like macromers: total hydroxyl (by titration), vapor pressure osmometry, hydriotic acid/gas chromatography, ultraviolet spectroscopy, proton-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and thermal analysis. Number average molecular weights were measured by vapo

Abstract:
Twenty-five gay men, 20 with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and 5 with either AIDS Related Complex (ARC) or who tested positive for the AIDS virus, were asked in semi-structured interviews whether they felt supported or isolated. Areas covered included society in general, employment, housing, health care, insurance, religion, families of origin, ex-wives, children, friends and lovers. Subjects indicated that fear of AIDS, homophobia, and death anxiety were all present in certain circumstances, but there was no attempt to differentiate between these three possible causes o

Abstract:

The objective of this thesis is to determine the average probability of bit error of an asynchronous, noncoherent, direct-sequence, code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system using wideband M-ary FSK as bandpass modulation. The immediate analysis and determination of the average probability of bit error is made inherently more difficult because of two random effects. The first disturbance encountered in the analysis is the existence of additive, white, Gaussian noise and multi-user noise. The second disturbance, which is more difficult to analyze, is the effect of multipath fading, w

Music composed by computers has always been lacking in "musical" qualities: mood, emotional expression and a sense of purposefulness or goal. A musical expert system, called EMOTER, is the first attempt to address these important musical aspects. EMOTER receives as input a list of moods (e.g., happy, lively) and generates melodic passages intended to evoke those moods in an organized, coherent fashion. EMOTER composes the basic units of music called phrases.

The program uses the mood-specification from a theory due to Deryck Cooke to derive a few motifs (very primitive me

The basic resource of all solar systems is the sun, and a knowledge of the quantity of the energy available is of prime importance. Although the solar radiation outside the atmosphere is known and almost constant, various climatic factors cause wide variations in its value on the earth's surface. In addition, the relative position of the sun with respect to local points of interest will allow surfaces with different orientations and tracking ability to receive different quantities of solar energy. This research focuses on the effect of cloud cover on the solar radiation received on the earth's
