Maynard, Robert. "The effects of limb speed and limb preference on selected isokinetic strength and power measures during internal and external rotation of the shoulder." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42059.

Abstract:
Forty-five males volunteered to serve as subjects to investigate the effects of limb velocity and limb preference on peak torque/body weight (PTBW), torque acceleration energy (TAE), average power (AVP), and endurance ratio (ER) at isokinetic speeds of 60 and 300 degrees/second during internal and external rotation of the shoulder. Standard Cybex warm-up and test protocol were used for both test conditions. Test/retest reliability estimates ranges from r=.60- .70. Repeated Measures ANOVA revealed significant limb speed and limb preference effects on PTBW, TAE, and AVP in both exercise speed or

Mays, Richard Bruce. "Experimental investigation of helium injection at a low downstream angle into supersonic flow." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42076.

Full text
Abstract:
Experiments were performed with single, sonic, helium jets at downstream angles of 15° and 30° relative to the free stream to determine their mixing, penetration and total pressure loss when injected into a supersonic air cross flow. From this information, the performance of these jets as fuel injectors in a supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) combustion chamber was estimated. Both injection angle jets were made flush to the wind tunnel wall. The jets were injected into a Mach 3 free stream with a total pressure of 6.5 atm, a total temperature of 283 K and a Reynolds Number of 52.5x10⁶ /m.

May, Jim. "Methods employed in performing a feasibility study on a yardwaste composting program for Virginia." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42236.

Full text
Abstract:
Virginia is rapidly running out of landfill space. Recycling is seen as a way to alleviate some of the burden on our landfills. The Commonwealth of Virginia has mandated an ambitious recycling goal of 10% of our municipal solid waste (MSW) by 1991, 15% by 1993, and 25% by 1995. Yardwaste (debris such as leaves, grass clippings and shrub and tree prunings) comprises an estimated 15% to 20% of the municipal solid waste going into our landfills daily. Yardwaste can be recycled by collecting the material, piling it into large windrows, and allowing it to decompose by a controlled process called co

Abstract:
This study examines the current retirement strategies of agricultural producers, determines farmers’ levels of investment and financial planning knowledge, and makes recommendations for the construction of a computer-based expert system to assist producers in developing retirement plans and strategies. The first two objectives are accomplished through the analysis of 336 self-administered and mailed surveys from producers in Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Virginia, and Washington. The third objective is completed utilizing study results, information provided by individuals knowledgeable m personal fi

Abstract:
This study explores how the Citizenship School Program of the Highlander Folk School shaped the grassroots leadership of the Civil Rights Movement. The thesis examines the role of citizenship education in the modern Civil Rights Movement and explores how educational efforts within the Movement enfranchised and empowered a segment of Southern black society that would have been untouched by demonstrations and federal voting legislation. Civil Rights activists in the Deep South, attempting to register voters, recognized the severe inadequacies of public education for black students and built para
