Full textThis thesis deals with the hymns in prose (or. XXXVII-XLVI) of Aelius Aristides, a second century A. D. Greek orator. Its purpose is to provide the foundation for a critical edition of them, offering a translation into French (the first one ever for the whole corpus), as well as critical notices and commentary. So defined, the corpus will then be subjected to an extensive interpretative synthesis. The first part of the thesis analyses the favoured status of prose hymns in this orator's career, the poetics they put to work, the way they are firmly anchored in Greco-Roman culture and society and the religious attitude they reveal. This paper intends above all to investigate religious rhetorical practice, but it is also concerned with how the hymn sophist composer related to poetry and philosophy. In the second part, each piece comes with its translation on the opposite page, after a notice relating the circumstances of its composition, commenting on its pronunciation, structure, general spirit and main features; the notice also specifies the fundamental historical, institutional and political conditions of the individual oratory production. Based on the 1898 Keil's Berlin edition, the Greek text has been thoroughly revised and freed of many unjustifiable conjectures. A fivefold commentary, in the third part, aims at 1) describing the stages of the argumentation, while identifying the topoi that come into play; 2) explaining and commenting on the numerous quotations that enrich the orator's prose; 3) pointing out stylistic flourishes and linguistic niceties; 4) providing information about mythological allusions and contemporary realia; 5) discussing the opinions of former commentators

Full textThis study is an essai of etholinguistic analysis of a type of bobo oral tradition : sini. Sini are chants performed by "griots" and black-smith in the honor of the main human components (lincage and age group) and spiritual components (divinities) of the village. The study aims at demonstrating that the sini kind, according to its semantic aspect, its functions, the importance of the transmitter group and the emission area, is revealing the social and mental structure of the bobos. Three convergent approches have been elaborated to reach this target : a linguistic, an ethologic and a literary approach. The first part deals with the presentation of the social-cultural context of the chants. This explains why the presentation of the language (phonology and morpho-syntax) is followed by an ethnological survey. Then, the exposition of the emission circumstances underlines the audience attitude. The second part focuses on the edition of the chants. Each chant is transcribed into bobo then a line-by-line translation and a literary translation followed. The literary translations are gathered at the end of this part so that the lines and stanzas are in evidence. The last part aims at being anaytical : it first proceed with a go-and-fro between the content of the chants and the social context

Full textStudies on Ronsard have known a considerable proliferation for the last ten years or so, in particular, the Hymnes have benefited from this exceptional development. However, few studies about the Hymnes are connected to formal problems and especially concerning the language, nothing is particulary obvious. Thus it appears useful to initially proceed in making a complete list of scientific and technical vocabulary in order to examine its specificity. After, this lexicographic piece of work, our investigation will address the poet's position in the Hymnes vis-a-vis the numerous linguistic declarations made since 1550 which aim at enriching the French language by appealing to ancient and living languages, to old French sources and to neologismes. Secondly we will examine the function and the value of the vocabulary describing the relationnelle structure of the semantic values displayed in the work. We will try to clarify the ideas of Ronsard

Full textJean Salmon Macrin (1490-1557), famous neo-latin poet, native from Loudun, in France’s Touraine region, held the position of official valet and poet from the king François the first, like his colleague Clément Marot. He was considered during his lifetime as the greatest lyric poet after the great Horatius. This book proposes an edition, a French translation and a commentary of the Hymns of 1537, a key book in Macrin’s production. In these poems, Macrin returns to a more ardent yet intimistic devotion, a sign of his shift towards family topics. Macrin’s poems are a synthesis between profane lyrism and Erasmus’ philosophy. Full textThe analysis of the pange lingua hymns composed in europe in the 15th and 16th centuries allows us to examine in detail the general tendencies of the religious repertoire of the period. Examples of this include the increasing number of voices, the rise of the imitative style, the decline of the use of the cantus firmus in long note values, towards a cantus firmus integrated into the polyphony, the development of the musical language towards a balance between counterpoint and harmony, modal and tonal feeling, the progressive incorporation of the major third in final chords, and, on the prosodic level, the will to make the words more perceptible and to respect the latin accentuation in the post-tridentine works. Finally, the instrumental pange lingua illustrate, representatively, the different stages of the stylistic liberation of the instrumental repertoire with regard to the vocal writing

Full textThe preverbs a)na- et kata- are usually considered as a couple, because for motion verbs a)na- bears an up motion and kata- a down motion. These two preverbs have nevertheless been employed variously and more widely than for merely spatial indications.Studying the compound verbs of the works of Homer, Hesiod and Herodotus allows us to identify the essential conno-tations linked to these preverbs since early literature. Even if we cannot find the Urbedeutung, it’s possible to unders-tand how the meaning of these preverbs has progressed from a concret meaning to an abstract. The ordered investiga-tion of these compound verbs, by distinguishing the different categories of meaning, help us discover some semantic classes which seem to be essential for each preverb. Thus we see that the preverb a)na- is mostly linked to motion verbs, whereas the preverb kata- is more combined with stative verbs or verbs which discribe a disappearance.The question of aspect for the preverbs is also fundamental. The study of these two preverbs allows us to understand how they could, both of them, own an aspectual value to emphazise the process accomplishment. But we can see that it’s not the same accomplishment, since a)na- indicates a creative accomplishment, while kata- most often highlights the accomplishment of a dying process

Full textThe hymns of the Rg-Veda present a very articulate understanding of speech which included not only a myth of origin but also a theory, a reflection that the poetic Seers of Vedic Revelation bring to their work. While sometimes these discourses may appear secondary, the poet’s meditation on speech is often openly declared as the central theme of the poem, and more often still it appears as a parallel, masked theme of the poem and a possible key to understanding the hymn as a whole. By analyzing selected hymns (RV X 71 ; I 72 ; III 39 ; X 34) and their commentaries, one can isolate various essential elements of this theory of poetic creation: the acts of naming, seeing, and fabricating the poem itself. Studied in their context, the centre of a vast fabric of symbolic correlates, these ideas reinforce reciprocal implications between myth and the theory of sacrifice, sacrifice being not only an immemorial practice, but also the structuring principle of ancient Indian thought. The often enigmatic traits of Vedic deities may be understood by means of their relation to speech. The opposition between the two complementary mythological figures Agni and Indra reflects, in fact, two essential symbolic modalities of speech. As revealed at the end of this work, this point of view proffers a new approach to the mythological materials, one in which their relation to speech and the poetic experience become central to Vedic reflection on the nature of the gods

Full textThe subject of this thesis is Cuzco's catholicisation, through the study of religious song, in Quechua's language. This repertoire is particularly associated with popular culture, first through lyrics in Quechua, but also through the influence of indigenous genres (yaravi, huayno et qashwa) on the musical content. The music, which until now, was considered "folk music", despite results of the catechization project of the Catholic church, proves to be the essence of the specific religious fervor of the Andes' catholicism. The repertoire of songs in Quechua will be analyszed from three complementarry perspectives; firstly, the interventions of the musician brotherhood in relation to the religious offerings or veladas, secondly, the clergy's intervention in the use of those songs and finally the relationship between the indigenous musical genre and the different facets of that culture. This study focuses on a musical life ethnography of the major churches of Cusco's area, viewed from the perspective of musicians. Special attention will be paid to the activities of the chapel masters, who had a key role in the musical expression of the popular fervor

Full textThe present work consists of a translation and an historical, literary and theological study of the section of the Manichean psalm-book, discovered in Fayyum in 1930 and entitled "psalmoi sarakoton" - "psalms of the wanderers" (p. 133-186 in Allberry's "editio princeps"). These psalms, never translated into French nor exhaustively commented are a very original document on liturgy, theology and missionary methods practised by the Manichaean mission based at Lycopolis (Asyut) in upper-Egypt, and directly connected to Mani, through his disciples, Pappos and Thomas, whose work of evangelisation and diffusion of sacred texts of the "religion of the light" is elsewhere testified by Alexander of Lycopolis' treatise "against the doctrine of Mani", which we already studied in a previous work. This title "psalms of the wanderers" seems to refer to, in the same time, the existential situation of the soul in this world, "pilgrim on this earth among men", and the specific status of Manichaean elect, whose mission was to circulate, as wanderers and amidst dangers, their own master's word. This collection, presumably written in Egypt and in Greek language, by a high dignitary of the sect (perhaps Pappos himself), in the very late 3rd century, was in some way their breviary. We principally endeavoured to give a detailed account of the 38 psalms of this collection, which utter, in a poetical language influenced by the gospels an extremely subtle dogmatic, strongly connected with Adda's kephalaia and Faustus of Milev

Full textThe three parts of this doctoral dissertation combine to support the hypothesis that musical signs were used in the transmission of Christian hymns during the 5th – 10th centuries. In the first part, a papyrological corpus provides evidence of three types of musical indications: hirmoi, which were used as musical models for liturgical canon strophes, modal signs from the octoechos system and un-identified interlinear symbols. In the second part, several hirmoi identified in the papyri are located in hirmologia from the 10th – 13th centuries – liturgical books containing paleo-byzantine and medio-byzantine musical notations. The different versions of the melodies are compared and then transcribed into modern notation. In the final part, the strophe texts and unidentified symbols from the papyri are superimposed on the musical transcriptions in order to analyze and interpret the functions of the symbols
