Abstract:
This article analyses the function that code-switching plays in selected testimonies given at South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission which followed the country’s transition to democracy in 1994. In a number of testimonies, victims of human rights abuse under Apartheid code-switched into Afrikaans when recalling particularly offensive uses of language by the police. Within the code-switching literature, it is well recognised that a speaker’s choice of code, particularly for quoted speech, is a strategy for performing different kinds of local identities which index a range of social meanings and relationships (Álvarez-Cáccamo 1996, Koven 2001). Thus code-switching may serve a complex evaluative function although the meanings it generates are very context-dependent. In order to explore this role in the testimonies in this paper, I use the appraisal theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (Martin & White 2005). I argue that on a number of occasions, code-switching into a particular variety of Afrikaans is used by testifiers as a strategy to invoke negative judgement: it has the effect of associating the police with a particular racist ideology and positioning them for our sanction. Further, it works together with other engagement resources to insert a recognisable historical voice into the text, thereby expanding the heteroglossic nature of the discourse while simultaneously allowing the speakers to signal their rejection of that voice and the ideologies it represents. In the current SFL literature, however, code-switching has not been noted as an appraisal resource. In the light of the examples from the TRC testimonies, I argue that, in multilingual contexts, code-switching has the potential to invoke complex evaluative meanings and should be included in the appraisal framework as an evaluative resource.

The purpose of this study describes the types of code switching and code mixing in Mell Shaliha Crying Winter novel and the factors that cause code switching and code mixing. The method used in this research is qualitative method. This study uses a qualitative method. Data collection is done by observation and note-taking. The results of this study explain that code switching and code mixing events in the novel Crying Winter are found, namely internal and external code switching in the form of English into Indonesian and vice versa, Korean into Indonesian and the phenomenon of code mixing in the form of words, phrases, baster and clauses. The factors that influence the existence of code switching and code mixing are the participants, the situation, and the influence of the previous speech, and the aims of the conversation.

Abstract The mixing of three or more languages in casual conversations, a hallmark of Chinese Malaysian informal speech, expresses a range of sociological and ideological meanings in the ongoing construction of Chinese Malaysian heteroglossic identities. While code-switching patterns sometimes mark different speaker positions, they also express broader language identities and ideologies that transcend individual conversations. This is especially clear when analysing the relative frequency and semantic domains of single lexeme mixing, where English is mostly used for consumer culture, Malay for place names and personal names, and Chinese topolects for expressing emotion. Detailed analysis of 12 adult conversations recorded in natural settings in diverse regions of Malaysia is corroborated by language attitudes expressed in focus groups, Facebook posts, and informal conversations and interviews, revealing the diverse and sometimes contending language ideologies linked to specific languages in the Chinese Malaysian setting.

The study aimed to analyze Code-switching and Code-mixing between English and Indonesian language used by the lecturer in teaching the subject Communicative English Grammar for the second semester students of English education department of STAI DDI Pinrang.The method applied was qualitative descriptive. The data source was the utterances of the lecturer in teaching Communicative English Grammar. The data were collected by recording what the lecturer uttered in teaching-learning process and interviewing the lecturer to gain information about the functions of switching and mixing his code in teaching-learning process. Then, the collected data were classified and analyzed based on the types of code-switching and code-mixing and the functions based on the theory of Hoffman. The results showed that:1)The types of code-switching used by the lecturer of Communicative English Grammar in teaching and learning process were: inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and emblamatic/tag switching, and establishing continuity with the previous speaker. while for the types of code-mixing were: intra-sentential code mixing, intra-lexical code mixing, and involving a change of pronunciation; 2) The Functions or reasons of using both code-switching and code-mixing by the lecturer of Communicative English Grammar were: Repetition used for clarification, Intention of clarifying the speech content for students, and interjection. The findings implied that both code-switching and code-mixing were used by the communicative English grammar lecturer in English teaching-learning process, so it showed that both code-switching and code-mixing are necessary to facilitate ELT particularly in complicated subjets like grammar. In other words, the lecturers should consider the usage of both of them to meet the objectives of ELT. Keywords: Code-Switching, Code-Mixing, English Language Teaching

Code mixing is used when a speaker mixes two languages at once in one discussion. Therefore, the researcher chose to conduct code switching and code mixing research in the film entitled Habibie & Ainun 3. The purpose of this study was to find SPEAKING-aspects from Hymes as well as code switching and code mixing in the film's dialogues. The method used is descriptive method. Penelitian deskriptif qualitative ini dilaksanakan di IKIP-PGRI Pontianak dengan sampel penelitian dari mahasiswa semester empat. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan berupa interview, observasi, dan dokumentasi. Data dianalisis menggunakan langkah yang di sarankan oleh Miles and Huberman di dalam buku Creswell.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa:(1)Terdapat tiga tipe code switching yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa bahasa inggris IKIP-PGRI Pontianak semester 4 tahun ajaran 2017/2018 yaitu inter-sentential code switching dengan jumlah sebanyak 48 data,intra-sentinental code switchingdimana terdapat 35 data, dan tag switchingdengan perolehan data sebanyak 20; (2) Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa terdapat lima fungsi penggunaan code switching didalam kelas yaitu quotations, addressee specification, reiteration, message qualification, dan personalization or objectification.<br />Kata Kunci: analisis, speaking, code switching</p>

This study investigates representational code-switching (RCS) by considering three high school students' communications in the process of comparing and contrasting pairs of representations (e.g., equation and graph) in the context of rational functions. Supporting this study is research in the realms of students interacting with mathematical representations, practicing language learning, and linguistic code-switching (LCS). Attention is given to assessing student mathematical understanding based on frequency and type of RCS performed. This investigation concludes that RCS demonstrates either weaker or stronger mathematical performance depending on whether the RCS evidences semantic elaboration, isomorphic and transcendent connections, and domain register knowledge.

This research aims to identify types of code-switching and code-mixing found in some of “Murder on The Orient Express” movie dialogues and utterances. The source of the data in this research is the dialogue in Murder on The Orient Express movie. To achieve the aims of this research; the researcher uses the descriptive qualitative research method. This study uses the code-switching theory of Wardhaugh (1986) and code-mixing theory of Suwito (1983). There are two types of code-switching consisting of metaphorical code-switching and situational code-switching and two types of code-mixing consisting of outer code-mixing and inner code-mixing. From the results of this study, the authors found 50 data of code-mixing and code-switching and as many as 4 or 8% metaphorical code-switching data, 2 or 4% situational code-switching data. The author also found 44 or 88% outer code-mixing data, and 0 or 0% inner code-mixing data. The research’s result shows that the dominant form of code-switching and code-mixing is metaphorical code-switching and outer code-mixing.

This research titled is “Code Switching of Meitantei Katherine Movie”. This research aims to give information about types and causes of Code Switching in Meitantei Katherine movie. The data consists of two different languages, Japanese and English. The method of this reaserch is “padan intralingual” method and informal technique. The theories used are code witching by Romaine (1995), code switching by Wardhaugh (2006), cause code switching by Hoffman (1991) and semiotics by Danesi (2011). Based on the analysis, there are 21 code switching data consisting of one Tag Code Switching, five Intrasentential Code Switching, four Intersentential Code Switching, three Metaphorical Code Switching, and four Situational Code Switching.The Causes of code switching found on analysis are 1) talking about a particular topic; 2) being emphatic about something; 3) interjection; 4) repetition used for clarification; and 5) intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor.

Abstract:
This research aims to describe the use of code switching in English language learning, in terms of the form of code switching, the kind of code switching, the aim of code switching, the function of code switching and the causal factors of code switching. This study belongs to qualitative research. The subjects of this research were the English teacher and students. Meanwhile, the data were utterances of English teacher and students that contained code switching. The data were collected through observation, recording, note-taking and interview. Classroom activities, particularly in the teaching of English language, were recorded on video tapes and field notes. The data analysis revealed several findings. First, both teacher and students used word form of code switching, phrase form of code switching and sentence form of code switching when they were in the classroom. Second, the English teacher and the student used intern and extern code switching, temporary code switching, situational and metaphorical code switching. Third, the aim of using code switching done by the teacher and students were compensating for language limitation, to explain the material and strategy in teaching learning process. Fourth, the functions of code switching for teachers and student were as clarification, emphasis, repetition, translation, checking for understanding, tool for communication, developing vocabulary and tolerance. Fifth, the factors that caused code switching were to fulfil a need, to express or declare solidarity, to respect the listener and to be more informative.

Abstract:
This study aims to determine the types of code-switching and code-mixing produced by teachers in spoken short functional texts, the dominant type, and the factors that influence it. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data source was taken from the English teacher's speech in the classroom. The result of the study was 61 teacher utterances which included 37 utterances of code-switching (60.66%) and 24 utterances of code-mixing (39.34%). The teacher used 3 types of code-switching, namely inter-sentence code-switching, intra-sentence code-switching, and tag code-switching. Then it also uses 3 types of code-mixing, namely insertion code-mixing, alternation code-mixing, and congruent code-mixing. The dominant type of code-switching is inter-sentential code-switching 30 utterances (81.08%), and code-mixing is insertion 15 utterances (62.50%). The factor that influences the use of code-switching and code-mixing is the situation where students' ability in English is still lacking.

This research concerned with the types of code switching and code mixing used by the teachers, teachers’ reasons in using code switching and code mixing, and students’ perception of code switching and code mixing used by the teacher in the class. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The researcher used observation checklist, video recording, interview, and questionnaire as the instruments of this research. The data of this research was analyzed by classifying the types of code switching used theory of Poplack and the types code mixing used theory of Hoffman. The result of this research shows that the English teachers did all the types of code switching in English class. Namely; tag code switching, inter-sentential code switching, and intra-sentential code switching. Meanwhile, the researcher found that the teachers only used two from the three types of code mixing. Namely; intra-sentential code mixing and intra-lexical code mixing. The type that did not appear was involvement in a change of pronunciation. This study revealed that the teachers’ reason in using code switching and code mixing are; to help the students in learning English and to make the students more focus in learning process. For the students’ perception, most of the students agreed that the use of code switching and code mixing helps them understand the materials in English language learning class.

The songs are one of the numerous types of media that can use code-switching English and Indonesia has some number of songs of this genre. Unlike the lyrics made by Basboi, he mixed Indonesian and English in one song and not just one song but made it into an album. This study aims to the types of Code-Switching, the reason used in code-switching, and the most frequently use of code-switching in the lyrics of Basboi’s song. This study used descriptive qualitative method that is carried out by colleting as much descriptive data as possible which is then presented in the form of reports and description. The writer used Poplack’s theory to find four types of code-switching in Adulting for Dummies album. The results showed that The types of code-switching in Adulting for Dummies album are Intra-Sentential Code-Switching, Inter-Sentential Code-Switching, Tag-Switching, and Establish Continuity Code-switching. The study discovered 4 data of Tag-Switching (8,51%), 20 data of Inter-Sentential Code-Switching (42,55%), 23 data of Intra-Sentential Code-Switching (48,94%).

In the late 1950s, Iraqi Jews were either forced or chose to leave Iraq for Israel. Most Iraqi Jewish authors found it impossible to continue writing in Arabic in Israel and so faced the literary challenge of switching to Hebrew. As bilinguals, Iraqi Jewish novelists have employed Arabic in some of their Hebrew literary works, including strategies of code-switching. Conversational code-switching is traditionally divided into three types: intersentential code-switching, intrasentential code-switching, and tag-switching. Although code-switching in literary texts has its distinct features, research on written code-switching generally follows the typology applied to conversational code-switching. This article focuses on the typology of code-switching in literary texts. It investigates Arabic codes used in three Hebrew novels written by Iraqi Jewish novelists. The article suggests three main types of literary code-switching in view of the mutual relationship between author, text, and reader: Hard-Access, Easy-Access, and Ambiguous Access code-switching.

Abstract:
This study concerns with the code switching found in Cinta Laura's video on her Instagram TV. Descriptive qualitative method is used for analyzing the data from ten videos. This study used the theory proposed by Poplack (1980) about types of code switching and the theory from Hoffman (1991) about the reasons of code switching. This study shows that there are three types of code switching found and six reasons of code switching found. The result of this study shows that intra-sentential switching is the most frequently used in types of code switching and particular topic is the most frequently used in the reasons of code switching. The phenomenon of code switching occurs in many media such as social media. By doing code switching, it is easier to build a sense of solidarity rather than using only one language. Therefore, code switching is an interesting topic to discuss in sociolinguistics research.

Code switching is one of the topics that go into sociolinguistics study. This term refers to the phenomenon of language switching, either spoken or written, done by bilingual or multilingual people. In its development, code switching often appears in many literary works, one of them is in <em>London Love Story </em>film. <em>London Love Story </em>is an Indonesian movie released in 2016 by Screenplay Films house production. This movie contains code switching of two languages, Indonesian language and English. This research focused on analyzing the types of code switching which appears in this film which performed by the characters. The result in this research shows there are three types of code switching performed in London Love Story film, namely inter-sentential code switching, tag switching, and intra-sentential code switching refers to types of code switching proposed by Poplack (1980). Eleven utterances categorized into inter-sentential code switching, five utterances categorized into tag switching, and eight utterances categorized into intra-sentential code switching types. This phenomenon is influence by the reasons and social factors of code switching.

The aim of this study is to find the phenomenon of code switching in bilingual classroom which focused on types of grammatical code switching and reasons of using grammatical code switching. This research applied descriptive qualitative research which obtained the data from the discourse of lecturers and students in bilingual classroom at Universitas Negeri Medan. The researchers applied observation, interview and documentation. The data showed that lecturers and students used grammatical code switching in the classroom such as 2 tag code switching, 12 inter-sentential code switching, 22 intra-sentential code switching, 3 proper nouns, 1 negative words, 8 similarity of words in languages and 3 discourse marker. There are some reasons why the participants used code switching in their discourse. First, code switching made students more understand what the lecturers explained because not all bilingual students are able to speak English. Problems that often occur in learning need to be clarified when communicating. This is related to the use of code-mixing and connection switching in learning. This research aims to analyze the types of code-switching and code-mixing in online teaching, how English teachers use code-switching and code-mixing, and why teachers switch and mix speech. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive design. The objects of this research were three English teachers. Data was collected via Zoom video recording of the teacher's speech. Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana interactive model. The research results show that the type of code-switching teachers do most often is inter-sentential code-switching. There are 51 types, with a percentage of 50.49%. The code-mixing that teachers most often do is inserting (words). The total is 71 types, with a percentage of 70.29%. Finally, the most common reason teachers change and mix codes in speech is clarification of the content of speech, and the number is 8 with a percentage of 29.62%.

This study is motivated by a code-mixing and code-switching phenomenon in Indonesian society's communication as bilinguals and multilingual. In Indonesian society, the phenomenon of code-mixing and code-switching also occurs on social media platforms, one of which is YouTube. This study analyzes forms of code-mixing and code-switching in Narasi YouTube videos. This research aims to describe (1) the forms of code-mixing and code-switching and (2) factors that cause code-mixing and code-switching in the TWK season 2 video program on Narasi YouTube. This is a qualitative study that identifies the data using descriptive methods. Data collection techniques included observation, listening, and note-taking. The results of this study reveal that there is external code-mixing and switching, as well as internal and external code-switching. In the videos of the TWK season 2 episodes 1–14 on Narasi YouTube, code-mixing is more dominant than code-switching. Factors that affect code-switching and code-mixing to evoke a sense of humor, identification indicators, speaker factors, situations, and topic changes.

The functions of code mixing and code switching were analyzed by Marsigan’s theory, namely, quotation, addressee specification, repetition, interjection, message qualification, personalization and objectivization, and facility of expression. The data were collected by using the methods of recording and writing on note of what lecturer said in teaching learning process, then collected it and classified based on grammatical aspect of code mixing, code switching, sociolinguistic aspect, and the function (phatic function) of code mixing and code switching. A grammatical focused on the structural aspect of code mixing and code switching. While, a sociolinguistic approach was concerned with the role of social factors of code mixing and code switching. The result of this research showed that the grammatical aspect of code mixing and code switching are extra-sentential/tag mixing and switching, inter-sentential mixing and switching, and intra word of code mixing and code switching. Sociolinguistic aspects of code switching are situational and metaphorical switching. The functions of code switching were referential function, directive function, phatic function and metalinguistic function. But this study only focused on phatic function to clarify or emphasize a message. The achievement of this research can be used to make easier in teaching foreign language and can be used as additional source and also can develop code mixing and code switching field in the next research.

Code-mixing and code-switching are known to be universal phenomena among bilinguals. Not until recently, code-mixing/code-switching was seen as evidence of “internal mental confusion, the inability to separate two languages sufficiently to warrant the description of true bilingualism”. However, studies have proved that code-mixing/code-switching is not a manifestation of mental confusion but a rule-governed behaviour among bilinguals, which is motivated by various socio-psychological as well as linguistic factors. This paper seeks to explore and analyse the linguistic features in code-mixing and code-switching. It also investigates and finds out that in more cases, code-mixing and code-switching motivate the bilinguals in Ogba as they borrow words from other languages, especially English, to make speech utterance or writing. This to a large extent minimizes struggling with words among Ogba bilinguals because they easily code-mix/code-switch to continue speaking and/or writing. It has been observed that code-mixing/code-switching is more predominant among the Igboid/English bilinguals (which Ogba belongs to) compared to any other linguistic group in Nigeria. This paper explains why the Ogba people code-mix/code-switch a lot by looking at the history of the Ogba language contact with English, the socio-psychological factors as well as the linguistic factors/features that contribute to the predominance of code-mixing/code-switching among educated Ogba/English bilinguals. The study investigates the linguistic features of code-switching that include intra-sentential code-switching, inter-sentential code-switching and code-switching at word, phrase and clause levels, which are examined in both male and female Ogba/English bilinguals in conversations. It is found that intra-sentential code-switching (37.15%) is the highest code-switched area, and code-switching at word (31.21%), clause (21.54%) and phrase (6.42%) levels, being a part of inter-sentential code-switching, are the successive areas.

Code-switching is one of sociolinguitics phenomenon when a a speaker of bilingual or multilingual switch from a language to another one. The research aims to figure out types of teacher’ code-switching in the teaching and learning process in English class. The study applied a case study of qualitative descriptive research. The participant of the research was an English teacher at a state Islamic school in Sumedang. Observation and interview were used to collect the research data, and the data were analyzed based on code-switching theory proposed by Poplack (1980). The study revealed that (1) teacher applied three types of code switching, namely: intrasentential code switching, inter-sentential code switching, and tag switching; (2) the most frequently used types of code switching used was intrasentential code switching followed by inter sentential code switching and tag switching. Code-switching in songs is one of the recent techniques used by songwriters in bilingual and multilingual countries which has been proven to achieve commercial success within the market of popular music. The study which examined the types, functions, and pedagogical implications of code-switching in songs, utilized mixed methods in research and homogeneous purposive sampling in generating 15 select Filipino popular songs for content analysis. This study revealed the types of code-switching in songs which are classified into three groups which are the word structure, sentence structure, and song structure. The type of code-switching according to word structure is intra-word switching. According to sentence structure, the types of code-switching are inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching, and tag-switching. Moreover, according to song structure, the types of code-switching are intra-sectional switching and inter-sectional switching. Evidently, the seven functions of code-switching identified by Bloom and Gumperz are revealed in the study. It is, therefore, recommended that using code-switching in crafting songs may be taught to students. Furthermore, future research may be done for a more in-depth investigation of code-switching in songs. Language research teachers and linguistic scholars may use this study as a reference in studying the code-witching phenomenon in the languages and songs in their respective countries. A monograph on code-switching in songs may also be constructed.

This study aims to study the use of code-switching by TESL trainees from a local higher learning institution who underwent teaching practice in Kuching schools. It investigated their perceptions towards the use of code-switching and the code-switching functions in their English lesson. The findings indicated the teachers’ perceptions towards code-switching influenced their frequency of code-switching in class. Teachers with positive perception towards code-switching code-switched more often in class and vice versa. Six functions of code-switching in the English lesson identified were revoking, calling attention, personalisation, resource, need analyst, and communication facilitator. The most common function of code-switching in the English lesson was acting as resource. Seven out of nine of the trainee teachers were found to have code-switched in their English lessons which suggests that code-switching in the English lesson is a common phenomenon. Therefore, code-switching should not be viewed as interference in the English lesson. Instead, it should be viewed as an alternative approach to or technique of the teaching of English. Teachers code-switched in the English lesson to fulfill six code-switching functions in the English lesson. Teachers could consider the different functions of code-switching in the English lesson and utilise it as an approach to teaching Englishor to add to the variety of teaching techniques available to them.

The data consists of quotations in the form of lines and stanzas of the song lyrics undergoing code switching. The analysis was carried out by clarifying the types, forms, and reasons for code switching based on the theory presented by Suwito. The results of data analysis show that the type of code switching that appears in the lyrics of the song Tak Tun Pour is internal code switching. The code switching that occurs is in the form of intersentential switching. The reason for code switching is adjusting to the language code controlled by the interlocutor, the inability to use the language code that is being used for a long time continuously and continuously, changes in the interlocutor, and the specific intentions of the speaker. The type of code switching that appears is inward code switching. Code switching that occurs is in the form of insertion of words, phrases, clauses and repetition of words.

The benefit of this research is to be able to add insight about code switching and code mixing in the film for anyone who reads it. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods, meaning that descriptive qualitative methods are methods that describe and describe and to produce data in the form of sentences to understand sentences that state code switching and code mixing. The data analysis technique used in this research is the listening technique and the note-taking technique. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the number of code switching that occurs in Episode I is 5 sentences (conversational code switching 3, situational code switching is 2), and in Episode II it is 6 sentences (conversational code switching 5, metaporical code switching 1 ). So the total code switching that occurred in Episode I and Episode II was 11 code switching sentences. Meanwhile, the code mixing that occurred in the Episode I film was 48 sentences (mixed code level 45 words, mixed code level phrase 2, mixed code level clause 1), and in Episode II there were 22 sentences (mixed code level 16 words, mixed Phrase level code is 6). So the total code-mixing that occurred in Episode I and Episode II was 70 code-mixing sentences.

This research aimed at analyzing the code-switching used by the novelist, Erisca Febriani in her novel entitled Kisah Untuk Dinda in order to classify the types of code-switching in the form of sentence, dialogue, and narration. The method applied in this research was descriptive qualitative method. Data collection was executed by reading the novel, taking notes, and classifying the types of code-switching. The theory used in this study was proposed by Poplack as the main theory in determining the code-switching types. The result of the data analysis was presented formally and informally. In the novel, there were 135 data of code-switching divided into 3 types of code-switching, such as tag switching with 19 (14,08%) data, inter-sentential switching with 5 (3.70%) data and intra-sentential switching with 111 (82.22%) data. The most frequent type of code-switching found in the novel was intra-sentential switching, while inter-sentential switching is the least types of code switching.

Abstract Code-switching, the alternation between two languages in an interaction, is a salient characteristic of bilingual speech, but there is substantial variability in code-switching patterns among bilinguals. Language dominance, the relative strength of a bilingual’s languages, has been suggested as a key factor that impacts both the frequency with which a bilingual engages in code-switching and the directionality of code-switching. This study examines the relationship between language dominance and code-switching engagement and directionality. A total of 454 Spanish–English bilinguals completed questionnaires regarding language dominance, code-switching engagement, and code-switching directionality. Results demonstrated an impact of language dominance on code-switching engagement, with more balanced bilinguals reporting greater code-switching, although significant individual variation remained. A weak link between language dominance and directionality was also found. These findings suggest that while language dominance may serve to constrain a bilingual’s range of possible engagement with code-switching, it represents a distinct characteristic of a bilingual’s language profile.
