Abstract:

Paris 4, 2000. http://www.theses.fr/2000PA040174.

Full text
Abstract:

Thesis, Paris 8, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA080148/document.

Full text
Abstract:
According to the initial verse of the Book of Ruth, the story takes place during the period of the Judges. However, its place in the Hebrew Bible canon, where it is revealed in Writings (Ketuvim), as well as linguistic aspects of the text, has led scholars to believe that the book was composed during a late post-exilic period. The purpose of this study is to learn the development of the Book of Ruth and in particular, the political messages and customs of that precise period. Thanks to the conciseness of the story, an analysis in a laboratory-like environment is possible. The model that results from this study displays a very complex textual construction of several layers of writings and multiple authors. In turn, it enables one to observe various language styles scattered over a period of several centuries. Some of the language expressions are characteristic of Paleo-Hebrew and some are influenced by Talmudic Aramaic. There also appear to be logical inconsistencies within the narrative and reminders of a polytheistic cult. This research takes us on a journey through time that begins as a folktale of a Moabite woman in the land of Judea, probably from the turn of Royalty around the year 1000 BC. The journey halts unexpectedly during the seventh or sixth century BC, as its first writings appear during this period. It finally concludes during the fifth or fourth century BC, with the return to Zion from exile in Babylon, a period in which the Masoretic version of the Book of Ruth was likely written

Mendola, Carmelo. Thesis, Strasbourg, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019STRAK009.

Abstract:
Our work suggests the discovery of a thinker from Jewish orthodoxy, Eliezer Berkovits (1908-1992), and aims to establish a dialogue between the Jewish and Christian communities in a perspective borrowed from the comparative theology of religions. Could his comments on the "hidden God" in relation to the Shoah be conducive to dialogue ? After a biographical overview, we will explore the main themes of his theological thought by proposing an itinerary beginning with three key axes : God, man and history. We will then move on to a critical discussion of its considerations and conclude with the relevance of its thinking for current theological reflection by discerning possible areas of dialogue up to Christian theology

Jeon, Seung-Hwa.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to show how clichés collapse and exists the inexplicable that Beckett notices as a condition of existence that coexists with other conditions, light and darkness ; and as chaos, composed by art destroying prejudices and clichés, and seen by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. This demonstration therefore proposes, on the one hand, to examine the fall of the gods of creation, sources of truth, wisdom and progress, and their denaturation into gods of chaos, and on the other hand, the elements abnormal writing, likely to be named monsters, because of their strangeness and ambiguity that prevent them from being defined. As for the gods of chaos, it will be the parody of the Christian God, Jesus Christ and Prometheus the inventor, and their degradation by which the creator will no longer be distinguished from his creature. As for the inconceivable monsters, the conditions of the monsters and the negative reactions towards them, which paradoxically imply the monstrualization, will be revealed by the theme of flowers, and the two mythical images, androgynous and Siamese, will reveal the impossibility of the identification or the significance, and the state of the interstage or confusion

Jalloun, Rola Adnan. "The Role of Diet, Erythrocyte Membrane Fatty Acid Composition, and Alzheimer's-related Genes in Systemic Inflammation in the Cache County Memory Study." DigitalCommons@USU, 2015. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/4495.

Full text
Abstract:
This project examined the association between dietary patterns, erythrocyte membrane fatty acids concentration, and Alzheimer’s-related genes in systemic inflammation, as indicated by C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, in order to achieve more comprehensive knowledge of how nutrition and genetics influence systemic inflammation among the elderly residents of Cache County, Utah. First, the associations between dietary patterns defined by Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and Mediterranean dietary patterns (MED) and the risk of having a high level of CRP were examined. This study showed that a healthy dietary pattern score was associated with CRP levels; a higher score reflecting the ideal DASH diet and MED diet was associated with a 26% and 27% reduction in the risk of having high CRP levels respectively. This association appeared stronger among overweight and obese individuals. Second, the association between erythrocyte membrane fatty acids (EMFAs) and elevated serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels was examined. Those that had high EMFAs composition of palmitoleic acid and nervonic acids, both monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and dihomo-y-linolenic acid (DGLA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA-6), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), all polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), had an increased risk of having CRP elevation. In contrast, risk of CRP elevation was reduced in those that have highest levels of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) of margaric acid, stearic acid, and arachidic acid. These associations were generally observed to be stronger among women compared to men. Lastly, the study examined whether AD-related genes identified in previous genome-wide association studies are associated with elevated levels of inflammatory CRP. Results revealed a strong association between APOE-epsilon genotypes and CRP levels. Results also showed an association between major alleles of APOE rs439401, TOMM40 rs157580, and minor alleles MMP8 rs1892886, CR1 rs6656401, CR1 rs3818361, and CR1 rs4844609 that were associated with a risk of elevation of CRP. These associations were stronger among men compared to women. Reduction in the prevalence of AD could have tremendous importance; the results of this dissertation may help identify factors important to AD etiology and, in turn, provide valuable targets for prevention.

Zarzouli, Despoina.

Abstract:
The nineteenth and twentieth centuries are characterized as centuries of literary criticism. The primary objective of this thesis will focus on the methodology used by “New Criticism” in relation to the work of Jean Racine. The New Criticism was a formalist movement, popular in the sixties, which focuses on objectively evaluating the underlying structure and text from literary work.Representatives of ‘‘New Criticism”, such as, Lucien Goldmann, Charles Mauron and Roland Barthes utilized structure methods to interpret Racine's literary works. The Sociological criticism of Goldmann, the Psychoanalytic criticism of Mauron, and the Structuralism of Barthes offer several areas of consideration. The aim of this study is to present the methods proposed by “New Criticism”, to reveal the essence of its theories, to assess their value by demonstrating the reason of their importance, and to understand controversy sparked around this formalist movement. So, identifying the “challenges of the ‘’New Criticism” in Racine’s criticism’’ by examining the criticisms made by other critics is the purpose of this work

Sanders, Chelsea L. "Gene-Environment Interaction: Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) as a Moderating Factor for the Effects of Exercise and Diet on Cognitive and Mental Health: The Cache County Study on Memory in Aging." DigitalCommons@USU, 2018. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/7163.

Full text
Abstract:
The Cache County Study on Memory in Aging, funded by the National Institute on Aging, studied longitudinal changes in memory and aging over 12 years’ follow-up in a population-based sample of 5,092 older adults in semirural Cache County, UT. Among the extensive interview procedures, researchers collected information regarding the participants’ demographics, health, genetic factors, diet, physical activity, and cognitive abilities. This study has allowed researchers to investigate how genetic and modifiable lifestyle factors interact to predict health, cognitive function, and psychological wellbeing in older adults. Diet and exercise are important lifestyle factors in maintaining cognitive health and psychological wellbeing throughout the lifespan, including late-life. The current investigation primarily focused on the link between these lifestyle factors and specific genes in predicting cognitive decline and risk for depression among older adults. Older adults are at risk for cognitive and mood changes as they age and certain genes may increase their vulnerability to these changes. However, it is possible that an older adult’s lifestyle behaviors regarding dietary pattern and physical activity may be protective against such genetic vulnerabilities. The genes investigated in this study are related to the production of a protein in the brain that promotes cell growth and survival. A better understanding of the relationship between lifestyle and genetic factors in late-life cognitive decline and depression may offer a better conceptualization of healthy aging and lead to more targeted diet and exercise recommendations. The present study found that engagement in moderate-vigorous physical activity was associated with slower cognitive decline whereas vigorous physical activity was associated with reduced risk for depression. Further, a specific gene was related to worse cognitive functioning among sedentary individuals. Alternatively, greater adherence to the dietary pattern investigated in our study did not reduce risk for depression and was beneficial for cognition in males only.

Viljoen, Johan Wilhelm. Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/24738.

Full text
Abstract:
The basic question underlying this thesis concerns the identification of the fundamental elements constituting the Western religious tradition and the way in which these elements manifest themselves in the writings of French writers and philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, authors chosen as the subject of this work not only because of their historical and biographical resemblance to one another but also because both are inscribed within the same existentialist and pseudo-existentialist literary tradition emerging in post-war Europe during the nineteen-forties. In the case of both Sartre and Camus, this tradition is particularly characterised by a literature seeking to affirm itself as resolutely atheist on the one hand yet infused with an unshakeable moral imperative on the other, obliging not only an active engagement by their readers in the cause of those less fortunate, but also a continuous effort by the two authors themselves to justify this imperative in the face of their maintained conviction that the universe has neither creator, nor existential reason, nor inherent meaning. It is precisely the contradiction between these two characteristics, and particularly the fact that the first cannot be logically derived from the second, which leads me to propose that the atheism affected by both writers might not be as absolute, as natural or as real as it seems, and that, despite their efforts throughout their work to show to what extent they reject the notion of divine existence, the moral imperative both support with such fervour is actually derived from a lingering religious faith so psychologically primal that neither of them ever manages to rid himself of it entirely. Of course this faith is not based on any true intellectual conviction, but rather the result of two distinct factors: firstly, the adherence of both authors to a cultural and intellectual tradition wholly constructed on religious thought, thus forcing their art to reflect this thought and its constituent elements despite their own conscious objectives and desires, and secondly the irresistible influence of such personal and particularly psychological factors as prohibits either from partaking of an authentic atheist conviction. However, as both continue throughout their lives to deny the existence of this faith whose influence neither is capable of escaping, I also propose that this influence on their writing is necessarily opaque, and the god itself on which it is based, a hidden god.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Parametric analysis of microprocessor SRAM through special design for test features (DFT) is used extensively by fault isolation and failure analysis engineers to find and characterize defects. While regular raster and special cache patterns (i.e. weak-write test mode) detect many stuck-at faults, a parametric analysis is needed to identify which defect mechanism is the cause of a cache failure. Pico-probing is the most common method of parametric analysis on SRAM cells, but is becoming increasingly difficult on smaller geometries. These curves can also be taken non-destructively by muxing any bitline (BL) and bitline_bar (BL#) of an internal cache to an I/O pin and sweeping these pins with an external PMU (a test mode known as low yield analysis, or LYA). Unfortunately, a growing amount of leakage on each new process is distorting these LYA testmode I-V curves, making it increasingly difficult to find and differentiate defects. The goal of this paper is to discuss the simulation and silicon results of a concept On-Die LYA (ODLYA) circuit implemented in a 65 nm CMOS process technology. ODLYA is used to curve-trace individual transistors within an SRAM cell and read out results in an automated fashion. Taking measurements on-die eliminates interconnect-dominated IR drop and leakage distortion from several levels of multiplexing. The proposed implementation enables non-destructive high-speed parametric analysis with less dependency on growing cache sizes, number of cores, and scaling process technologies.

Abstract:
The high heat flux and strong thermal coupling in the 3D ICs has limited the performance gains that would otherwise be feasible in 3D structures. The common practice of adopting worst-case design margins is in part responsible for this limitation since average-case performance would be limited by worst-case thermal design margins. The coupling between temperature and leakage power exacerbates this effect. However, worst-case thermal conditions are not the common state across the package at runtime. We argue for the co-design of the package, architecture, and power management based on the multi-physics interactions between temperature, power consumption and system performance. This approach suggests an adaptive architecture that accommodates the thermal coupling between layers and leads to increased energy efficiency over a wider operating voltage range and therefore higher performance. In this paper, we target at a 3D multicore architecture where the cores reside on one die and the last level cache (LLC) resides on the other. The DRAM stack may be stacked on top of the package (e.g., 3D) or in the same package (e.g., 2.5D). We propose a novel adaptive cache structure — the constant performance model (CPM) cache — based on voltage adaptations to temperature variations. We construct a HSPICE model for the SRAM to explore the relationship between temperature, supply voltage, and the circuit delay in the context of the LLC. This model is used to investigate, characterize, and analyze the effect of the temperature-delay dependence of the SRAM LLC configuration on the system-level performance and energy efficiency. This analysis gives rise to an intelligent scheme for dynamic voltage regulation in the LLC cache that is sensitive to the temperature of the individual cache banks. Each cache bank is thermally coupled to the associated cores and thus is sensitive to the local core-level power management. We show that this local adaptation to the temperature-delay dependence leads to a significant power reduction in the LLC cache, and improvement of system energy efficiency computed as energy per instruction (EPI). We evaluate our approach using a cycle-level, full system simulation model of a 16-core x86 homogenous microarchitecture in 16nm technology that boots a full Linux operating system and executes application binaries. The advantages of the proposed adaptive LLC structure illustrate the potential of the co-design of the package, architecture, and power management in future 3D multicore architectures.

Abstract:
The alarming growth of power increase has presented numerous packaging challenges for high performance processors. The average power consumed by a processor is the sum of dynamic and leakage power. The dynamic power is proportional to V^2, while the leakage current (therefore leakage power) is proportional to V^b where V is the voltage and b>1 for modern processes. This means lowering voltage reduces energy consumed per clock cycle but reduces the maximum frequency at which the processor can operate at. Since reducing voltage reduces power faster than it does frequency, integrating more cores into the processor would result in better performance/power efficiency but would generate more memory accesses, driving a need for larger cache and high speed signaling [1]. In addition, the design goal to create unified package pinout for both single core and multicore product flavors adds additional constraint to create a cost effective package solution for both market segments. This paper discusses the design strategy and performance of dual die package to optimize package performance for cost.

Abstract:
Integration of different functional components such as level two (L2) cache memory, high-speed I/O interfaces, memory controller, etc. has enhanced microprocessor performance. In this architecture, certain functional units on the microprocessor dissipate a significant fraction of the total power while other functional blocks dissipate little or no power. This highly non-uniform power distribution results in a large temperature gradient with localized hot spots that may have detrimental effect on computer performance and product reliability as well as yield. Moving the functional blocks may reduce the junction temperature but can also affect the performance by a factor as high as 35%. In this paper, multi-objective optimization is performed to minimize the junction temperature without significantly altering the computer performance. From the results, the minimum and the maximum temperature was 82.4°C and 94.5°C with a corresponding penalty on the performance of 35% and 0% respectively. The optimized location of the functional blocks resulted in a temperature of 83.2°C for a performance loss of 5%.

Abstract:
Microprocessors continue to grow in capabilities, complexity and performance. Microprocessors typically integrate functional components such as logic and level two (L2) cache memory in their architecture. This functional integration of logic and memory results in improved performance of the microprocessor. However, the integration also introduces a layer of complexity in the thermal design and management of microprocessors. As a direct result of functional integration, the power map on a microprocessor is typically highly non-uniform and the assumption of a uniform heat flux across the chip surface has been shown to be invalid post Pentium II architecture. The active side of the die is divided into several functional blocks with distinct power assigned to each functional block. Previous work has been done which includes numerical analysis and thermal Based optimization of a typical package consisting of a non-uniformly powered die, heat spreader, TIM I &II and the base of the heat sink. In this paper, an analytical approach to temperature distribution of a first level package with a non-uniformly powered die is carried out for the first time. The analytical model for two layer bodies developed by Haji-Sheikh et al. is extended to this typical package which is a multilayer body. The solution is to begin by designating each surface heat flux as a volumetric heat source. An inverse methodology will be applied to solve the equations for various surfaces to calculate maximum junction temperature for given multilayer body. Finally validation of the analytical solution will be carried out using developed numerical model.
