Abstract:

Abstract:
In October 1555 Jean Jourdain, twenty-six, a humble farmer living near Geneva, was distraught at having contracted venereal disease, for which he could not afford medical treatment. On a Sunday morning, rather than going to church, Jourdain went into the woods where he stabbed himself. Immediately after inflicting the wound, Jourdain heard the ringing of the church bell. Feeling remorse, he asked forgiveness from God and walked to a nearby village, where he languished another eight days before expiring. In spite of his contrition, authorities ordered that Jourdain's body be dragged on a hurdle and then impaled and left exposed outside the city as a deterrent to others. In February 1564 Julienne Berard was most upset about being convoked by Geneva's Consistory to account for a dispute she had had with her nephew. According to witnesses, Berard, so frightened by the prospect of facing the questions of Calvin and other Consistory members, took her life by throwing herself in the Rhone River. As a result of this self-inflicted death, Berard's body was also dragged through the streets of Geneva and buried at Champel which, as the site of executions, was a place of ignominy. Over a century later, the notary Jean Bardin hanged himself because he was devastated by the deaths from an explosion of three of his young children and by the subsequent burglary of his house. In spite of the entreaties of his widow on behalf of their surviving minor children, the Small Council passed an extremely harsh sentence in September 1670, enjoining that Bardin's body be dragged on a hurdle before burial and that all his assets be confiscated.

Abstract:
This article argues that the ‘null prep’ phenomenon discussed by Klein (1990; 1993; 1995) and Jourdain (1996) is a special case of a more general phenomenon in second language acquisition: the reliance on the A-bar binding strategy discussed by Rizzi (1990) and Cinque (1990). This strategy is employed even where both the L1 and the target language rely (primarily) on movement analyses. We present an analysis of additional English–French interlanguage data, complementing our analysis of Klein's and Jourdain's data. We argue that apparent categorial mismatches in A-bar chains may result from Preposition Incorporation. Although both movement analyses and binding construals are squarely within the UG-constrained hypothesis space, we suggest that learners may be driven to (nonmovement) binding construals to account for A-bar dependencies for reasons associated with online computational complexity, under the assumption that a nonmovement construal derived by Merge alone is less costly than one derived by Move (Chomsky, 1995).

Abstract:

Abstract:
Two of the main contemporary stakes concentrate around the Jordan and its basin, what makes of it a unique case. On the one hand, rivalries around water, a irreplaceable resource more and more scarce in an arid area. On the other hand, the continuous strains whose consequences show its effects beyond Near East. The deep reasons of those antagonism must be looked in the geographical and hydrological features of the area and also in the symbolical and religious representation which the oriental people makes of the ‘blue gold’, through the sacred of seculared thoughts or documents. The recent historical evolution, the role of London or Paris led to the creation of states, irregularly equiped in water. After 1967, Israel changed its status of downstream state to the one of upstream state, thanks to its territorial conquests. Giving up the main part of those acquisitions would make him losing this privileged position, hence strong strains with the main protagonists of the basin finding again an attractive location in case of withdrawal ( Lebanon, Syria, palestinian territories ). Conversely, non strategic countries on an hydraulic viewpoint and located rather at the periphery of the basin maintain better relations with the jewish state ( Egypt, Jordan, Turkey ). A new war based only on this stakes seems however hypothetical although more and more announced or theorised. International law, in its numerous declension that can be enforced to the current conflict, is an option of settling to favour, through the protection of international watercourses with purposes other that navigation, civilians victims or under occupation, and the environment

Abstract:
This thesis is the first modern edition of the “chanson de geste” of the late middle ages Jourdain de Blaye in alexandrines. This text of 23193 lines is a revised version of the thirteenth century poem in decasyllabic verse. It is preserved in only one manuscript: arsenal 3144 which dates from 1455. The second manuscript (Tournai102) vanished in 1940, but there are a modern handwritten copy and several quotations in studies of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. Finally the poem of Ami et Amile in alexandrines preserved in four manuscripts has an end which runs parallel with the beginning of Jourdain de Blaye in alexandrines. So our edition is based on the arsenal manuscript and controlled by several evidences. Our literary study shows what transformations the old version underwent. The general structure is totally different. The version in alexandrines consists of two parts: the part based on the thirteenth century version and the part made up by the reviser. The revised version appears a genealogical story which makes three principal families to confront each other: the Jourdain's one, the pagan Qualefrin's one and the treacherous Fromond's one. The first two families became closer and the last one is progressively eliminated. Our linguistic research points out many regional or rare words and phonetic and morphological features of the north of the domain of oil. It makes a contribution to the history of French language, because it rectifies the Franzosisches Etymologisches Worterbuch which collected Godefroy's quotations with mistakes in the date. Our thesis will contribute to the progress of the investigation of the French language and literature of the late middle ages

Abstract:
This research aims to demonstrate that the re-use of local building materials in the Jordan Valley can contribute to the autonomy of rural Palestinian communities. To achieve this, we question the evolution of the earthen building sector in these territories. We assume that there is a close link between the transformations of the rural society, its economic and political structure and the transformations that appeared in the earthen building sector. Three historical periods have been identified and have verified this hypothesis: the case of Palestine before 1920, the period between 1920 and 1970 and finally the current situation. Through these evolutions, we understood that the re-use of local materials allows real autonomy when the earthen building sector is integrated to the ongoing social and economic practices. This idea was verified by studying the current context where this building sector knows a temporary reconstruction. This research is divided into three parts. The first part details the relation that exists between earthen architecture and the concept of sustainable development; we will be explaining the case of Palestine before 1920. The second part specifies the changing values of rural society that have taken place between 1920 and 1970 and the transformations of the habitat linked to it. Finally, the last section attempts to assess the reconstruction of this building sector by detailing the current political and economic context and confronting it with the projects led by the “new actors” on the ground

Abstract:
The late 6th-early 5th millenium BC is one of the least known of the southern Levant prehistoric periods. In this context, the excavations on the site of Tel Tsaf, in the Jordan Valley, offer an unprecedented opportunity to shed light on communities from that period. This study aimed, through the definition of production systems, distribution and use of ceramics, to define the social and economic functioning of the site and beyond, to address its regional status. In this purpose, we have developed a techno-petrographical approach of the ceramic assemblage, based on the identification of chaînes opératoires. Secondly, we recontextualized the ceramic assemblage of Tel Tsaf in the broader context of the Jordan Valley and the Levant, through comparisons at micro and macro-regional level. This study prooved particularly rich. At the site level, it allowed us to highlight a complex and multi-cultural society. At the regional scale, it allowed us to define a community of practice in the Jordan Valley and highlight a phenomenon of migration from the northern Levant, to the site of Tel Tsaf. Regarding our results on Tel Tsaf, as well as comparative studies on the material of Beth Shean XVIII sites and Abu Gosh III - Jasmine street, we attempted to provide a broader reflection on the Jordan Valley and the Southern Levant at the turn of the 5th millennium

Abstract:
Abstract This work has significant practical applications in the area of Dynamics of nonlinear systems. Here, one of these applications is presented: a methodology based on Dynamics principles and axioms and animation techniques, which yield the visualization of the dynamic behavior of nonlinear systems. Three theoretical and experimental examples are shown, illustrating mechanical systems modeled as systems of particles, as a rigid body and as multibody systems. Three laboratory prototypes were created: a double pendulum (system of particles), a top (rigid body) and a satellite with internal rotors (multibody system). The purpose of comparing the motions of these prototypes with the ones obtained by numerical simulations is to make learning easier and to show the physical meaning of equations of motion obtained through Dynamics principles and axioms formulated by Newton, Euler, D’Alembert, Jourdain and Lagrange.

Abstract:
In the field of aeroelasticity, flutter is a well known instability phenomenon. Flutter is a synchronized vibration which takes place in a flexible structure moving through a fluid medium. It occurs when two regular, rhythmic motions coincide in such a way that one feeds the other, drawing additional energy from surrounding flow. A classic case of wing flutter might combine wing bending with either wing twisting. This article explores the flutter phenomenon in water. An important difference from the flutter phenomenon in air is the fact that the flexible structure is evolving in heavy fluid; this implies in particular added mass effects and important fluid damping. Flutter appeared for the first time on racing yacht keels with composite fins, so in water, in 2004: • On the IMOCA 60 feet boat POUJOULAT-ARMORLUX of Bernard STAMM during the transatlantic race ‘The Transat’: he lost his keel and capsized. • On the IMOCA 60 feet boat SILL Rolland JOURDAIN: the keel and the boat were saved. Following these problems — particularly following the loss of the keel of Bernard STAMM sailboat, accident that could have dramatic consequences for the skipper — HDS company focused on the phenomenon. Flutter has occurred only for canting keels with composite fins on IMOCA 60 feet and Volvo 70 feet racing yacht. The main questions asked are “Why are composite keels susceptible to flutter, and is it possible to predict and prevent this behaviour?”, then “Can a fair indication of the flutter critical speed of the keel be given at low cost?”. This presentation will introduce the strategy of HDS faced to the problem and the analytical and numerical methods implemented to estimate the flutter critical speed. Our model is based on a truncated modal basis for the most energetic modes which are generally, for a bulb keel, the lateral bending predominant mode and the torsion predominant mode. One of our requirements was to make a simple model in order to integrate the calculation of the flutter critical speed in the first design loops of a composite or steel keel. This model has worked well for the two cases of flutter appeared on IMOCA sailboat keels. Besides, to verify the quality of the model and to complete our analysis of flutter phenomenon on racing yacht keels, a 3 dimensional multi-physics simulation has been developed using the software ADINA.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper we outline the analytical foundations of an approach for modeling interactions in dynamic systems. The method is based on impulsive constraints which can be employed to represent time-varying interaction of dynamic subsystems, and the transition between different phases of motion. Besides impulsive constraints, the analysis is based on Jourdain’s principle, and a kinematic representation of constrained mechanical systems which is related to this principle. Both finite and impulsive constraints are considered in a general manner, assuming that those can be nonlinear in velocities. It will be shown that Jourdain’s principle can create a simple and physically clear basis for such constrained motion problems. A classification of motions constrained by finite or impulsive constraints is discussed. An impulse-momentum level form of Jourdain’s principle is presented to handle impulsive constraints. An example of two robotic arms in cooperation is employed to illustrate the material presented.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper we investigate the dynamics of the process when a robot intercepts and captures a moving object. This operation is called dynamic mass capture. The effects of structural flexibility of the robot is taken into consideration. In terms of time the analysis is divided into three phases: before interception (finite motion), at the vicinity of interception and capture (impulsive motion), and after interception (finite motion). Special attention is paid to the modeling of the second phase when the robot intercepts and captures a target and it becomes part of the end effector, thus, the system’s degrees of freedom and topology suddenly change. To describe this event, an alternative approach is proposed. This is based on the use of a class of impulsive constraints, the so-called inert constraints. Jourdain’s principle is employed to derive the dynamic equations for both finite and impulsive motions. Based on the proposed approach, simulation results are presented for a flexible slewing link capturing a moving target. These results are compared with the observations of an experiment. Good agreement is found between the experimental and simulation results, which suggests that the analysis presented in this paper can be used with confidence in investigations of robots intercepting and capturing moving objects.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper a dynamic system consisting of a robot manipulator and a target is analyzed. The target is considered in a general way as a dynamic subsystem having finite mass and moments of inertia (e.g. a rigid body or a second robot). The situation investigated is when the robot establishes interaction with the target in such a way that it intercepts and captures a reference element of the target. The greatest attention is paid to the analysis of the phase of transition from from ‘free’ to constrained motion at the time of interception and capture (impulsive motion). Based on the use of impulsive constraints and the Jourdanian formulation of analytical dynamics, a novel approach is proposed for the modeling of target capture by a robot manipulator. The proposed approach is suitable to handle both finite and impulsive motions in a common analytical framework. Based on the dynamic model developed and using a geometric representation of the system’s dynamics, a detailed analysis and a performance evaluation framework are presented for the phase of transition. Both rigid and structurally flexible models of robots are considered. For the performance evaluation analyses, two main concepts are proposed and corresponding performance measures are derived. These tools may be used in the analysis, design and control of time varying robotic systems. The dynamic system of a three link robot arm capturing a rigid body is used to illustrate the material presented.
