Full textTwo of the main contemporary stakes concentrate around the Jordan and its basin, what makes of it a unique case. On the one hand, rivalries around water, a irreplaceable resource more and more scarce in an arid area. On the other hand, the continuous strains whose consequences show its effects beyond Near East. The deep reasons of those antagonism must be looked in the geographical and hydrological features of the area and also in the symbolical and religious representation which the oriental people makes of the ‘blue gold’, through the sacred of seculared thoughts or documents. The recent historical evolution, the role of London or Paris led to the creation of states, irregularly equiped in water. After 1967, Israel changed its status of downstream state to the one of upstream state, thanks to its territorial conquests. Giving up the main part of those acquisitions would make him losing this privileged position, hence strong strains with the main protagonists of the basin finding again an attractive location in case of withdrawal ( Lebanon, Syria, palestinian territories ). Conversely, non strategic countries on an hydraulic viewpoint and located rather at the periphery of the basin maintain better relations with the jewish state ( Egypt, Jordan, Turkey ). A new war based only on this stakes seems however hypothetical although more and more announced or theorised. International law, in its numerous declension that can be enforced to the current conflict, is an option of settling to favour, through the protection of international watercourses with purposes other that navigation, civilians victims or under occupation, and the environment

Full textThis thesis is the first modern edition of the “chanson de geste” of the late middle ages Jourdain de Blaye in alexandrines. This text of 23193 lines is a revised version of the thirteenth century poem in decasyllabic verse. It is preserved in only one manuscript: arsenal 3144 which dates from 1455. The second manuscript (Tournai102) vanished in 1940, but there are a modern handwritten copy and several quotations in studies of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. Finally the poem of Ami et Amile in alexandrines preserved in four manuscripts has an end which runs parallel with the beginning of Jourdain de Blaye in alexandrines. So our edition is based on the arsenal manuscript and controlled by several evidences. Our literary study shows what transformations the old version underwent. The general structure is totally different. The version in alexandrines consists of two parts: the part based on the thirteenth century version and the part made up by the reviser. The revised version appears a genealogical story which makes three principal families to confront each other: the Jourdain's one, the pagan Qualefrin's one and the treacherous Fromond's one. The first two families became closer and the last one is progressively eliminated. Our linguistic research points out many regional or rare words and phonetic and morphological features of the north of the domain of oil. It makes a contribution to the history of French language, because it rectifies the Franzosisches Etymologisches Worterbuch which collected Godefroy's quotations with mistakes in the date. Our thesis will contribute to the progress of the investigation of the French language and literature of the late middle ages

Full textThis research aims to demonstrate that the re-use of local building materials in the Jordan Valley can contribute to the autonomy of rural Palestinian communities. To achieve this, we question the evolution of the earthen building sector in these territories. We assume that there is a close link between the transformations of the rural society, its economic and political structure and the transformations that appeared in the earthen building sector. Three historical periods have been identified and have verified this hypothesis: the case of Palestine before 1920, the period between 1920 and 1970 and finally the current situation. Through these evolutions, we understood that the re-use of local materials allows real autonomy when the earthen building sector is integrated to the ongoing social and economic practices. This idea was verified by studying the current context where this building sector knows a temporary reconstruction. This research is divided into three parts. The first part details the relation that exists between earthen architecture and the concept of sustainable development; we will be explaining the case of Palestine before 1920. The second part specifies the changing values of rural society that have taken place between 1920 and 1970 and the transformations of the habitat linked to it. Finally, the last section attempts to assess the reconstruction of this building sector by detailing the current political and economic context and confronting it with the projects led by the “new actors” on the ground

Full textThe late 6th-early 5th millenium BC is one of the least known of the southern Levant prehistoric periods. In this context, the excavations on the site of Tel Tsaf, in the Jordan Valley, offer an unprecedented opportunity to shed light on communities from that period. This study aimed, through the definition of production systems, distribution and use of ceramics, to define the social and economic functioning of the site and beyond, to address its regional status. In this purpose, we have developed a techno-petrographical approach of the ceramic assemblage, based on the identification of chaînes opératoires. Secondly, we recontextualized the ceramic assemblage of Tel Tsaf in the broader context of the Jordan Valley and the Levant, through comparisons at micro and macro-regional level. This study prooved particularly rich. At the site level, it allowed us to highlight a complex and multi-cultural society. At the regional scale, it allowed us to define a community of practice in the Jordan Valley and highlight a phenomenon of migration from the northern Levant, to the site of Tel Tsaf. Regarding our results on Tel Tsaf, as well as comparative studies on the material of Beth Shean XVIII sites and Abu Gosh III - Jasmine street, we attempted to provide a broader reflection on the Jordan Valley and the Southern Levant at the turn of the 5th millennium

Full textThe tradition of Jourdain de Blaye/Blaves is quite dense. After a study of this tradition, this thesis presents a critical edition of the first part of Jourdain de Blaves, one of the anonymous prose texts derhymed from the chanson de geste written in alexandrines, Jourdain de Blaye. This thesis also provides notes, variants and a glossary with the edited text. This study explores the textual tradition of Jourdain de Blaye/Blaves. The tradition starts with a chanson de geste written in decasyllables in the early thirteenth century. This text has been rewritten and amplified in alexandrines at the beginning of the fifteenth century. Then, in the same century, it was translated into two unrhymed texts. The first one is contained in the unique manuscript from the National Library of Wales (ms. Aberyswyth, NLW, 5022D). The second one was transmitted in five printed editions published in Paris in the sixteenth century. The study of the tradition led us to choose the editio princeps of Michel Le Noir (1520). This imprint has a strategic place in the textual tradition; it is very close to the version written in alexandrines and all the sixteenth century editions were made from the one of Michel Le Noir. Through an initial contrastive analysis, this thesis compares the mise en prose to the clearly identifiable versified source and offers considerations on the interplay between verse and prose. Then, a second comparison between the five printed editions originating from the sixteenth century allows this thesis to give an insight into the work of printer-editors and their editorial strategies. Moreover, the study serves to demonstrate that micro-corpora of re-editions are notably useful in the study of language change.Complementing the aforementioned studies, this work emphasizes the linguistic richness of the edited text of Michel Le Noir’s imprint. The most noteworthy features are to be found in the study of syntax as well as in the one of represented oral speech. The accumulated analyses aim to enrich the philological, linguistic and literary reflections developed in this thesis

Full textJordan of Saxony, the second master of the young Order of Preachers, has always been presented by the Dominican hagiographic tradition as a special model for preachers. Over a thousand brethren are said to have joined the Order through his influence. However, his sermons remain poorly known, chiefly because of the lack of written texts. Nevertheless, by the first half of the 20th century, sermons of Jordan of Saxony have been mentioned in reportationes collections, but were never edited. Edition of these manuscripts - the attribution to Jordan of Saxony having been verified - offers privileged access to his preaching, despite all the difficulties related to the poor quality of the manuscripts or to the technique of the reportatio itself for which one has to verify the fidelity to the actual words used by the preacher. However, these reported sermons represent, above all, sermons preached in universities and synods, and do not make up for the whole preaching of Jordan of Saxony. It is therefore necessary to resort to other sources - hagiographical sources, collections of exempla, work tools destined to help the work of predicators, - for a better understanding Jordan’s original preaching. His word was a word of edification, edifying both the people and the Order of Preachers, in the context of the newborn university world, - and that despite the opposition it encountered. The study of Jordan’s preaching thus allows better knowledge of the first generation of Preachers

Full textMy research questions the imagination of the body through a model of transmission and production. This means understanding, with a system of communication that does not use the spoken word, how a deaf actor can integrate his own method of teaching to a didactic model. It is a question of research on a particular esthetical form concerning the silent body. To accept the lack of words in these conditions is not trying to reproduce words by gests neither is it trying to imitate the action of individuals we have taken as models. I reveal a theory in a teaching system which creates a theatre of gests, a process founded on visibility. If one considers that the use of different languages could open new perspectives, one could envisage that the initial language (sign language) could be thought of as an emerging artistic form. A movement that reinvents itself in a context open to other languages where each person’s particularity is concerned: a movement which introduces contemporary creation. It is a question of displacing the frontiers or the intermingling of languages which brings us to different ways of thinking. The rule of art is not to enclose each human being in his domain, but to open up unknown territories. This study underlines the importance of the multi-field research of the subject observed which conditions the exploitation and the experimentation of its transformation in contemporary art. An original esthetical approach invites us to put into question continually existing artistic languages

Full textThe aim of this work is to show from the geopolitical point of view the connections existing between the processes of Nation-building intrinsic to Israel and the Israeli planning policies in the region going from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River. This approach is an analysis of the way territory contributes through its planning to build an Israeli Nation and shapes the inter jewish national identities. The approach raises the question of a plausible normalization of Israel as a State-Nation, if it is understood as a way of “making territory”, of living in it, and from there, as a way of building a Nation. This work attempts to establish a genealogy of Israeli planning policies and strategies, and to venture beyond the conflict representation and the Yishuvim versus Hitnahaluyot myth. It also attempts to set a genealogy of inter jewish identities specific to Israel and to outline the inclusion and exclusion limits of the Israeli Nation beyond juridical, religious or sociological matters. Whether in Israel or in the West Bank the question arises: how to become a native without becoming oriental?

Full textThe issue of the protection of international watercourses is becoming increasingly important on a global level. The international community is aware of the need to preserve the quality and quantity of water contained by the rivers, and the importance it has for the economies and survival of populations. In the Middle East, the situation is most critical, this arid and semi-arid region is experiencing a drought more severe and knows a parallel population growth, factors that explain a scarcity of water. We should also add a particularly tense political climate, which prevents a joint and shared management, fair and reasonable of resources. States, rather than understanding the urgency of protecting a common interest, prefer to defend their national interests. This thesis aims to study the legal regime of the Middle East's three major international rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, the Jordan and the Nile, a multidisciplinary approach (river law, the right to state sovereignty , the law of treaties, the law of State responsibility and environmental law ...), in order to identify gaps and shortcomings. The rest of the thesis is devoted to the study of what might encourage, in the recent developments in international law, the establishment of a harmonious protection, equitable and sustainable of the water resources in Middle East, through a regional cooperation between the concerned States and between regional and international actors

Full textPierre-Albert Jourdan (1924-1981), after ten years of a more strictly poetic quest, decided and tried, from 1970 to his death, to use writing, especially in fragments, as a way of transforming himself in order to wholly encounter reality. He resorted then to many methods to act on himself, his will, his sensibility, his intellect, or his affectivity. Aphorisms and self-injonctions helped him, with acuteness or even violence, and the use of irony, to get rid of some behaviours or thoughts. In more poetic-like texts, the working on language was intended to deepen a interior state of receptivity toward the natural world, the invisible that seems to underlie it, and the ethic suggestions that it offered. Jourdan tried also to direct writing against the intellect, to shake it, as the zen koan does, and make himself lose its representations and experiment « things as they are ». Or he relied on humor, on a withdrawing expression, to detach himself from emotions related to failure and death, and lovingly accept even his own ruin. An attempt that, even if he often repeated its insufficiency, seems to have permitted the light, the serenity, that can be felt more and more in his last writings, their beauty, and their deep utility for the reader who accepts to open himself to an experience of being

Full textAll through the uneasiness of contemporary poetry runs a need ethical and phenomenological which maintains open in the writing the passage of the sensible world in its initial nudity and immediacy. That tension in both words and flesh characterizes the works of Yves Bonnefoy, Philippe Jaccottet and Pierre-Albert Jourdan, all three intent on approaching through a writing made body the nudity of the world. This intervallary and fragmentary status of writing defines a poetics of the verbal nude, which has the power of telling the unforeseeable encounter of the body in the words, the creation of a body-text which corresponds not to a mere metaphor but to an act, that is to say to an ethical body. While the phenomenological and semiotic approach of the verbal body enables one to think the passage of the body into the writing, it is the Semiostylistic theory developed by Georges Molinié which will provide the adequate tool to circumscribe the literarity status of the " verbal nude " and the reception model which founds the " ethical body "

Full textThis act dated on fructidor 19th in the year VI (september 5th 1798), upon general Jourdan's proposition based on the following principles : in case of danger in homeland, all the citizens had to do their military service, the length of which was unlimited. French young men aged 20 to 25 were all concerned. Replacement was authorised and from the year x, conscription became the recruiting system of armies. The opposition to that system concerned (tougher from 1812) and according to the regions, (the south west of France was more opposed to conscription). The law passed on fructidor 8th in the year XIII settles the drawing lots, the legal exemptions and authorizes replacement. A lot of draft evaders or rebellions people (about 1/4) refused to obey these military duties. So, "mobile columns" of soldiers and men at arms were set up to track those who refused to go. In spite of the laws of amnesty, the opposition always remained rather sharp. The number of conscripts between 1804 and 1813 was 2 432 335 men, a great number of whom never rejoined the depots. That law was abroged by the 1st restauration in 1814 and restored in 1818 in the name of Gouvion Saint-Cyr act

Full textThe current legal framework that dictates the water distribution in the Levant can be considered as inapt and insufficient in the way it overlooks the populations’ current needs. Negotiated upon through a series of bilateral conventions that favored the interests of some sovereign states at the expense of others, today’s legal framework is sustaining the long-standing political tensions in the region. In hindsight, it appears as though the bilateral conventions have shaped a status quo that failed to take into account the vital characteristic of the natural resource in question and its essential need to be shared and equitably distributed in an approach that subscribes within the common interest. Today, although the international water distribution practices witnessed significant evolution, the Levant region nevertheless still finds itself enacting an outdated framework, one that overlooks the hydrological unity of the Jordan Basin. In practice, the bilateral conventions led to a sectarian division of resources as opposed to a more balanced and fair regional one allowing a full implementation to the principles of equitable and non harmful use of international water. These customary principles, now codified, can’t fully be effective through this lacking and deficient legal framework. However, the Levant’s water resources can go from being the bearer of regional tension, to triggering a series of cooperative talks. With a high number of imperatives at stake it is only a matter of time until the regional players reconvene and adopt a more suitable and equitable distribution practice. Doing so would bring about new levels of institutionalized and cooperative practices, which would ultimately lead to a strong affirmation of peace in the region

Full textFreshwater is a key resource for health, prosperity and human security. It is essential to the eradication of poverty, to the equality of people and to food security. However, billions of human beings face serious water-related challenges. The Middle East is the region of the world where the water resource is most likely to lead to wars. The dislocation of the Ottoman Empire has removed from the watersheds their political unity, the new frontiers having shared them between several states, following the events that marked the creation of Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Palestine.By 2030, nearly half of the world's population will live in areas subject to high water stress. The reason to choose of writing a thesis in this field. The Middle East is at the heart of major geostrategic issues and remains a space of tension and confrontation due to the multiplicity of geopolitical, environmental and security issues. Watersheds are often shared among several countries. This delicate situation worsens as a result of population growth, rising standards of living and climate change. In this thesis, we tried to trace the problems to give a thorough legal and geopolitical visibility on the subject and tried to give solutions that could change at any time depending on the political situation in the region
