Vignier, Bernadette. "François Coppée, un poète patriote au Gaulois (1898-1902)." Orléans, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1995ORLE1011.

Abstract:
This work gathers 136 of François Coppée's texts published in Le Gaulois beetween 1898 and 1902. They are either articles written for publication or speeches which were actually delivered but remained unpublished to this day. They are presented here with footnotes and a reminder of the main political background events of the time. These texts shed a light on the unreesearched history of the ligue de la patrie française, which Coppée co-founded and which he presided over during that period. They supplement what was common knowledge about the life of a writer who had his heydays, and who believed ha had a vocation for polities inspired by an exacting conception of patriotism. The introduction is a retrospective of the poet's life, stressing the episodes likely to account for his later political stand. It also provides a sketch of the main historic events of the time together with the league's activities, its involvement in Paul Déroulède's failet attempt at a coup, and in the main election campaigns which took place between 1900 and 1902. The conclusion tries to assess Coppée's skills as an orator and polemist in his new capacity, but also points out how badly damaged his reputation and talent as a writer and a poet were bound to be

Abstract:
As a catholic metropolis of major importance, Lyon is an excellent site for studying both the religious and urban aspects of the French Revolution. The parochial context then changes radically in order to adapt to the evolution of the society. The clergy are less numerous whereas, by force of circumstance, the laity are assigned a more active part in the life of the Church and become real militants. Conversely, during the revolutionary period, a large number of the population detach themselves from Catholicism and, at the same time, emerges an anticlerical opinion, just as militant. The characteristic elements of the contemporary religious scene in Lyon are set up : the public space becomes an area of confrontation between catholic militancy and anticlerical militancy. But, faced with the violence which bathes the city in blood from 1792 until 1795, the population of Lyon also learns to compromise and restrain themselves on both political and religious matters

Selles, Otto H., and Antoine Court. Paris 4, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994PA040132.

Abstract:
The thesis' first chapter provides a summary describing the life of the reformed pastor Antoine Court (1695-1760), from his birth until the year 1744. Chapters two and three describe the link between his work Le patriote français et impartial (1751-1753) and various political projects, begun by court during the years 1744-1755, with the goal of changing the French court's policy towards protestants in France. Through the use of court's correspondence, these chapters give at the same time numerous details concerning the genesis and the distribution of the text. Chapter four analyses the text by comparing it to other similar works, in order to provide a general survey of the debate on toleration during the 1750s. Lastly, a critical edition of the Patriote français et impartial, makes this rare text more accessible a text that deals with toleration and French protestants several years before Voltaire’s involvement in the Calas affair

Abstract:
Following the declaration of war in September 1939, censorship is reestablished under the control of military forces to prevent people from criticizing the government’s policy and to regulate the communication of military information. Censorship offices settle down in Pau and check the departmental press. After the armistice is signed, censorship falls into the hands of civilians and forms itself under a regional organization which depends on the central censorship office in Vichy. In November 1941, when Henri Peyre is nominated in Pau, measures to monitor the press are strengthened. There are increasing numbers of conflicts involving the three daily newspapers: Le Patriote, l'Indépendant and France Pyrénées. The censor transforms his services into a propaganda and informing outlet. He closely monitors the public and cultural life with great zeal. After the liberation, newspapers in Pau stand trial and disappear. The censor, in turn, is sentenced to ten years of forced labour

Grove, Angela Nicole. "Thomas Johnson: Gentleman, Vermonter, Patriot." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2015. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/403.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a micro-history of the formation of the various identities that shaped the Revolutionary War experiences of one eighteenth-century Vermonter (Thomas Johnson) whose life is documented in a manuscript collection at the Vermont Historical Society. I break down Johnson's identities into three levels: social class, state, and national. My argument is that what it meant to be a provincial gentleman, to be a Vermonter, and to be an American were still being constructed at the time of the Revolution and were therefore in a state of flux. The fluid nature of these identities shows us how America's founding fathers' generation was full of ambiguity and a multiplicity choices. The first section of my thesis analyzes how Johnson's identity as a gentleman officer influenced his experience as a prisoner-of-war. I argue that Johnson's identity as an American patriot and his role as a double-agent can only be understood in relation to his conflicted identity as a provincial gentleman. The second section, on the identity of Vermont in the context of a new American nation, starts with historical background on the formation of Vermont first as part of New Hampshire, then as part of New York, and, finally, in negotiations with the British in Canada to rejoin the British empire, with which Johnson participated. In this section I argue that the shifting identities of colonial and revolutionary Vermont provided a backdrop of fluidity and change, as well as animosities between eastern and western residents, which influenced the identities of individual Vermonters during the war, including Thomas Johnson. For the national level, I look at how European Americans had divided loyalties during the war, with an emphasis on the Revolution as a civil war. My thesis departs from most historiography on the Revolution as a civil war, though, by examining it as a war with gray area - not just black and white, or Patriots versus Loyalists. I use this analysis to examine how Johnson's community was divided and why Johnson's neighbors reacted so diversely to the possibility that he was working with the British. In a last and brief section of my thesis, I look at how Johnson has been memorialized in his town's history, and how doubts of his American loyalty have all but disappeared over time, regardless of the intense debates they provoked during his lifetime. I aim to show that despite the consensus view that has shaped much of the historical memory of the American Revolution, the actual process of revolution was full of disorientation and turbulence.

Sanders, Michael. "The USA PATRIOT Act and Punctuated Equilibrium." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2759.

Abstract:
Currently, Title II of the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (USA PATRIOT Act) Act of 2001 appears to be stalled as a result of controversy over the intent and meaning of the law. Proponents of the title advocate the necessity of the act to combat modern terrorism, whereas opponents warn of circumventions of the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Using punctuated equilibrium as the theoretical foundation, the purpose of this case study was to explore the dialogue and legal exchanges between the American Civil Liberties Union and the Department of Justice related to the National Security Agency's metadata collection program. In specific, the study sought to explore the nature of resistance to changes needed to mollify the controversies associated with Title II. Data for this study were acquired through publicly available documents and artifacts including transcripts of Congressional hearings, legal documents, and briefing statements from the US Department of Justice and the American Civil Liberties Union. These data were deductively coded according to the elements of PET and then subjected to thematic analysis. Findings indicate that supporters and opponents of the law are locked in a consistent ideological polarization, with supporters of the law touting the necessity of the authorizations in combatting terrorism and opponents arguing the law violates civil liberties. Neither side of the debate displayed a willingness to compromise or acknowledge the legitimacy of the other viewpoint. Legislators who accept the legitimacy of both researched viewpoints could create positive social change by refining the law to meet national security needs while preserving constitutional protections.

Abstract:
This essay proposes to explore the visual expressions of political power during the crisis of independence, in the transition from the colonial monarchical system toward the constitution of the new South American republics. We shall take as our point of departure the depersonalization of power which accompanied the fall of the king and explore the different materializations of the modernnation-state and the uncertain place which heroes’ portrait occupied in the new republican symbolic cosmos.

Abstract:
This study investigates about the meaning of the USA PATRIOT Act of 2001. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the meaning of the USA PATRIOT Act from an archaeological perspective (in the Foucauldian sense). Rather than accepting the Act and its formulations this study excavates the discursive elements that give meaning to the Act within the current socio-political sphere. In this sense this is a Foucauldian archaeology of patriotism in the United States of America illustrated and explicated through the current discourse created by the USA PATRIOT Act. Moreover, this research intends to illustrate how the patriotic discourse affects our current spatial practices. By analyzing the contemporary patriotic discourse through the lens of spatial theory what is sought is to briefly sketch the conceptual landscapes that are created through this discourse. This study applies the concepts and theories of Michel Foucault, Edward Soja, and Homi Bhabha as well as other postcolonial theorists to analyze the USA PATRIOT Act as a discourse that is linked and shaped by history and a discourse that is active in the design and content of our spaces.

Terms such as â fascistâ and â naziâ retain light and even comical currency in contemporary pop culture despite the gravity of the events that produced them. Departing from this common usage, I consider within political and psychoanalytic frameworks the normative effects common understandings of fascism and totalitarianism exercise vis-a-vis collective attachments (patriotism, nationalism), and specifically how this discourse shapes notions of citizenship. Working within this political-psychoanalytic model, I analyze the substance behind Barack Obamaâ s Presidential campaign themes of hope and change by way of his Inaugural Address in relation to that of George W. Bush. I conclude by engaging the discourse on cosmopolitan citizenship, considering both how it fits into the framework developed for this project and the relation of Obamaâ s understandings of citizenship and foreign policy to cosmpolitanism.

Abstract:
This thesis undertakes an examination of American nationalism in women's writing of the antebellum period. This was a significant time of national formation which witnessed the geographical area of the nation double as new lands in the West and their inhabitants were brought into the Union. In addition, previously unprecedented numbers of immigrants were arriving from the Old World, causing anxiety among many native-born Americans about the national character and identity. The female literature of the period engages with these issues in ways which have not yet been fully explored and which invite a fresh critical examination. In this thesis, I argue that the idea of the American nation was formulated and investigated in the work of antebellum domestic writers, just as it was in the writings of politicians, newspaper men or the male writers of the American Renaissance; and that discussion of this aspect of the women's writing adds much to our understanding of the nature of American nationalism at this time and to how it chimed with contemporary cultural attitudes. The writers selected do not simply theorise national identity but promulgate, suggest, explore and debate what it means to be American and the qualities and characteristics which embody the ideal American. They are all members of well- established American families in the Northeastern states, and they work within a matrix of belief with regard to race, religion and class. Each author selected confronts the issue of national identity in her own way - adapting the genres of the historical novel, the bildungsroman, local colour writing and the traditional domestic novel - to create texts which were widely read not only in America itself but throughout Britain and Europe, spreading the writers' own national vision in the New and Old World alike. In so doing, they demonstrate their importance both as agents of America's growing sense of its nationhood and as significant contributors to nineteenth-century American literature.

Wannehag, Jim. "Nytt luftvärnssystem för Sverige : Patriot eller Aster SAMP/T?" Thesis, Försvarshögskolan, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:fhs:diva-6787.

Full text
Abstract:
As a result of the Swedish Armed Forces previous focus on international operations and strategic timeout in the beginning of the 21st century, the air defense today has surface-to-air missile systems that are several decades old. The systems are not designed to handle today’s high-tech opponent and the government has therefore decided that a replacement for MIM-23 HAWK must be in place by 2020. The choice stands between Patriot and Aster SAMP/T, the purpose of this paper is therefore to investigate and assess the military effectiveness of each surface-to-air missile system. The survey is based on a comparative analysis where the systems are compared to each other in a scenario which includes several events and requirements. Finally, the results are compiled and presented in a multi-goal-model to quantitatively measure the differences between the systems. The result shows that Aster SAMP/T has the greatest potential of being effective in a given context, but that Patriot also meets the requirements almost without any limitations. As the comparison is based on a particularly limited scenario with very specified conditions, it is important to take into account that the result is valid only against the scenario and requirements from which the systems are compared.

Abstract:

This thesis takes a closer look at the USA Patriot Act and the literary debate that has followed the passing of that Act. The aim of the thesis is to define what freedom is for the two opposing sides using McCallum's freedom model.

The literary analysis shows that the most common argument from authors who are pro Act is that in desperate times like these one must relinquish a part of the individual's freedom to ensure the safety of the collective. Amongst those authors who are against the Act concerns are raised for the possibilities of abuse as a result of increased government power such as the ability to detain immigrants for long periods of time, surveillance and increased exchange of information between federal agencies.

Abstract:
Decades of research has shown the relative futility of government efforts to manipulate the fertility rate of their citizens and that there is a distinct lack of correlation between population growth and indicators of state power. However, over 145 states currently have ongoing and costly efforts to shape the reproductive behavior of individuals to achieve an idealized rate of aggregate population growth. These states differ culturally, economically, and politically, but their population control policies have ever only followed four models. Why do states pursue population policies that have robust histories of failure and invest scarce resources in programs which show little promise of advancing state interests? Why do states that differ on many objective metrics maintain population policies that are broadly similar and have proven historically ineffective? In this dissertation I find that states do not react to the objective facts of their situations but instead respond to an enduring set of ideas that are generated at the international level. I demonstrate this by tracing the evolution of thinking on population growth and how competing models of the effects of population have driven state policies. Through the use case studies, including France, Germany, Russia, India and China, I illustrate how these competing ideas motivate state intervention in the private reproductive lives of millions of individuals.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Bilingualism is a recurring feature in Franco-Ontarian writer Patrice Desbiens' work. However, Desbiens' critics generally consider his bilingualism from an angle that is more social than formal. In this thesis, we study the literary forms of Desbiens' bilingual writing. We situate this bilingualism in the broader context of Bakhtinian heteroglossia, and reflect on the relationship between bilingualism and the plurality of voices (heterophony) and of points of view (heterology) within the literary text. In the first chapter, we distinguish four forms of bilingualism, three of which are employed by Desbiens. The next three chapters are thus devoted to the study of these forms. We first look at the "heterophonic-heterological" form, in which a diversity of voices, languages and points of view are intermingled. We then analyze the "monophonic-heterological" form, which integrates two languages and two points of view within a single voice. Finally, in the fourth chapter, we observe the "monophonic-monological" form, which unites languages around a single voice and a single point of view.In our conclusion, we show that Desbiens' bilingual writing participates in both a "particularist" and a "universalist" aesthetics, and that through the combination of these aesthetics, the writer tries to find a "third way" (Lucie Hotte). In L'homme invisible/The Invisible Man, Desbiens uses the many facets of plurilingualism to problematize the notions of "knowledge" and "truth". However, this "third way," which makes particularist and universalist issues overlap, is abandoned after L'homme invisible/The Invisible Man in favour of another way. Our reading of Desbiens' collections of poems shows an increasing homogenization of plurilingualism: in the period between 1980 and 1995, heterogeneous forms dominate, but they are progressively replaced in the 2000s by a much more homogeneous form, the monophonic-monological one. While successively expressing particularistic and universalistic considerations, this form restricts the heterogeneous potential of plurilingualism: it retains from the latter only the diversity of languages, eliminating the plurality of voices and of points of view.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Several researchers have identified discrimination and profiling as examples of oppression and threats to the democratic process. Scholarly literature provides little evidence on the experiences, beliefs, and attitudes of young adult Arab American Muslims post-9/11. This study addressed the attitudes and lived experiences of young adult Arab American Muslims between the ages of 18 and 25 regarding discrimination and profiling experienced in the District of Columbia Metropolitan area since the passage of the American Patriot Act. A phenomenological research study was conducted using Benet's polarities of democracy as the theoretical framework with a focus on diversity and equality. Data were collected from young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 living in a large east coast metropolitan area using participant interview and then coded to identify themes. Participants mainly agreed on noticeable differences in their treatment related to diversity and equality on campus, in the workplace, and in social public settings. Often, participants agreed that they have been targeted through additional measures such as political and media rhetoric which also negatively impacts their seeking of diversity and equality. Overall, the results of this study not only highlight the challenges this group faces but also indicates that the polarity pair of diversity and equality has not been leveraged well, thereby creating a mental concentration camp for participants. Lastly, this study may provide positive social change by allowing US Congress to better understand the negative consequences of the US Patriot Act.

Kwon, Shinyoung. "From colonial patriots to post-colonial citizens| Neighborhood politics in Korea, 1931-1964." Thesis, The University of Chicago, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3595935.

Full text
Abstract:

This dissertation explored Korean mass politics through neighborhood associations from the late 1930s to 1960s, defining them as a nationwide organization for state-led mass campaigns. They carried the state-led mass programs with three different names under three different state powers -Patriotic NAs by the colonial government and U.S. occupational government, Citizens NAs under the Rhee regime and Reconstruction NAs under Park Chung Hee. Putting the wartime colonial period, the post liberation period and the growing cold war period up to the early 1960s together into the category of "times of state-led movements," this dissertation argued that the three types of NAs were a nodal point to shape and cement two different images of the Korean state: a political authoritarian regime, although efficient in decision-making processes as well as effective in policy-implementation processes. It also claimed that state-led movements descended into the "New Community Movement" in the 1970s, the most successful economic modernization movements led by the South Korean government.

The beginning of a new type of movement, the state-led movement, arose in the early 1930s when Japan pushed its territorial extension. The colonial government, desperate to reshape Korean society in a way that was proper to the Great East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere and wartime mobilization, revised its mechanism of rule dependent on an alliance with a minority of the dominant class and tried to establish a contact with the Korean masses. Its historical expression was the "social indoctrination movement" and the National Spiritual General Mobilization Movement. Patriotic NAs, a modification of Korean pre-modern practice, were the institutional realization of the new mechanism. To put down diverse tensions within a NA, patriarchal gatherings made up of a male headman and male heads of household were set up.

Central to their campaigns—rice collection, saving, daily use of Japanese at home, the ration programs and demographic survey for military drafts—was the diverse interpretation of family: the actual place for residence and everyday lives, a symbolic place for consumption and private lives, and a gendered place as a domestic female sphere. The weakest links of the imperial patriarchal family ideology were the demands of equal political rights and the growing participation of women. They truly puzzled the colonial government which wanted to keep its autonomy from the Japanese government and to involve Korean women in Patriotic NAs under the patriarchal authority of male headmen.

The drastic demographic move after liberation, when at least two million Korean repatriates who had been displaced by the wartime mobilization and returned from Japan and Manchuria, made both the shortage of rice and inflation worse. It led the U.S. military occupational government not only to give up their free market economy, but also to use Patriotic NAs for economic control—rice rationing and the elimination of "ghost" populations. Although the re-use of NAs reminiscent of previous colonial mobilization efforts brought backlash based on anti-Japanese sentiment, the desperation over rice control brought passive but widespread acceptance amongst Koreans.

Whilst renaming Patriotic NAs as Citizens NA for the post-Korean War recovery projects in the name of "apolitical" national movements and for the assistance of local administration, the South Korean government strove to give it historical legitimacy and to define it as a liberal democratic institution. They identified its historical origins in Korean pre-modern practices to erase colonial traces, and at the same time they claimed that Citizens NAs would enhance communication between local Koreans and the government. After the pitched political battle in the National Congress in 1957, Citizens NAs got legal status in the Local Autonomy Law. The largest vulnerability to Citizens NAs lied in their relation to politics. While leading "apolitical" national movements as well as assisting with local administration tasks, they were misused in elections. Consequently, they were widely viewed as an anti-democratic institution because they violated the freedom of association guaranteed by the Constitution and undermined local autonomous bodies. In the end, they lost their legal status in Local Autonomy Law, with Rhee regime collapsed.

When Park Chung Hee succeeded in his military coup in 1961, he resuscitated NAs in the name of Reconstruction NAs for the "Reconstruction" movement with the priority being placed on economic development. However, civilians were against the re-use of NAs, with the notion that the governments politically abused them. Finally, the arbitrary link between state power and the NAs waned throughout the 1960s, passing its baton to the "New Community Movement" which began in 1971and swept through Korean society until the 1980s. Abstract:
This dissertation examines the lives and wartime resistance of a group of forty-one Nisei men (Americans of Japanese ancestry) who resisted the draft as a means of protesting their incarceration during World War II. While serving time in the same federal prison for violating Selective Service laws, they became acquainted for the first time and remained life-long friends after the war's end. They supported each other for more than sixty years amidst pressure to hide their identities as resisters, because the majority of Nisei preferred to forget this chapter in American history. This group called themselves the "Tucsonians," and this dissertation begins to tell their story. This study is based on oral histories and archival research and examines citizenship as a contested relationship between individuals and the state.

Abstract:
This thesis constitutes the first full-length study of Polish Communists in Canada, a group that provided a substantial segment of the countries socialist left in the early 20th century. It traces the roots of socialist support in Poland, its transplantation to Canada, the challenges it faced within an ethnic community heavily influenced by Catholicism, the complications caused by its links to the Comintern, and its changing strength and decline. It offers a deeper understanding of the ways in which the Communist party was able to appeal to certain ethnic groups, such as through cultural outreach, as well as its complicated and often arguably counter-productive relationship with the Comintern. It also furnishes important information on the efforts of the RCMP and Polish consulates to maintain control over the communists, as well as how generally improved material conditions among Poles, especially following the Second World War, along with the influence of the Cold War, accounted for a rapid decline in support. The thesis is primarily based on sources generated by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or, more precisely, by the Polish consulates in Winnipeg, Montreal and Ottawa. One the Canadian side, the thesis took advantage of RCMP records, Canadian security bulletins, immigration records and Polish-language newspapers printed in Canada. By utilizing these sources, this study not only analyses the interaction of the Polish Canadian communist movement with other segments of the Polish community in Canada, but it also moves beyond the introverted approach that has characterized most studies of ethnic organizations in Canada by placing the movement within a “Canadian” context to analyze its relations with the government, broader segments of Canadian society, and the Communist Party of Canada (CPC).
