Full textA century ago Cosmic Rays were discovered by Victor Hess during one of the very first scientific balloon flights. Ever since, Cosmic Ray physics and stratospheric balloons have shared a common history - either through genuine discoveries or by using balloon platforms as technology test beds for new satellite missions. This thesis, carried out within the JEM-EUSO collaboration, is about such a pathfinder balloon mission. Our ultimate science goal is the study of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR), the most energetic particles known in the Universe. Having macroscopic energies of over 10^20 eV, UHECRs are of yet unknown cosmic origin and are extremely rare. They penetrate our atmosphere at a rate of about one event per km2 and century, producing energetic atmospheric air showers, detectable through the ultraviolet fluorescence light they emit. The technique that our collaboration proposes for their detection consists of a spaceborne observatory, JEM-EUSO. Its objective is to monitor a very large volume of the Earth's nighttime atmosphere from above, recording a significant sample of ultraviolet light tracks initiated by UHECRs. In order to demonstrate the technologies and methods featured in the future space instrument, the EUSO-Balloon pathfinder has been developed by the JEM-EUSO collaboration. On August 25, 2014, EUSO-Balloon was launched from Timmins Stratospheric Balloon Base (Ontario, Canada) by the balloon division of the French Space Agency CNES. From a float altitude of 38 km, the instrument operated during the entire astronomical night, observing UV-light from a variety of groundcovers and from hundreds of simulated air showers, produced by flashers and a laser during a two-hour helicopter under-flight. These results have been made possible by the restitution of the instruments attitude carried out at IRAP, i.e. an exhaustive analysis of the flight data from various attitude sensors on board of the balloon gondola. Also, a precise understanding of the Fresnel optics was required to analyze the data of the first EUSO-balloon flight. The all new optical system, integrated and tested at IRAP, has been characterized during two measurement campaigns. To test this large refractive system, a new test method has been developed. The optics performance, i.e. the efficiency and point spread function, came as something of a surprise, since none of the numerical models had predicted the observed behavior. These measurements are used in the analysis of the flight data and for the deep understanding of these brand-new Fresnel optics, key element in the design of the JEM-EUSO instrument

Full textIn the world of the poets, absolute knowledge equals absolute word. As a result, the poet-philosopher concentrates its efforts on the word «be». Meaning of being is the unity between thought and being: « is » means-to Parmenides-a «state without subject». To achieve this state-and to get aware of it-the hero undertakes a journey to the underworld doubled by a return into the world of the living. No(s)os = nostos: thought = return. Muse of ontopoetics is Persephone: learning from this deity equals to be 'sacrificed' like her living double, Kore. The so called mystic experience is revealed in ontology as the abstract repetition of a human sacrifice. The foundation of philosophy is an abstract commentary to the murder of a « virgin »: Kore-Persephone or Aletheie-Hyele. She is both the dead « maiden » providing her identity to the male community, whose lawgiver was Parmenides, and the sublimated « Truth » whose « tremorless heart » becomes the stone of the philosophical quest. In conclusion, the Hebrew and Christian traditions are invoked as a possible alternative to the contradictions of violent ontology

Full textThis study reports on stent implantation in paediatric patients with congenital heart disease at the department of paediatric cardiology, Humboldt university of Berlin, Charité. Between 1994 and 2001 146/149 stents were successfully implanted in 115 lesions or arterial ducts of 103 patients. The age of the patients ranged between 1 day and 34 years (one adult patient), mean 4 years, median 1.1 years; the bodyweight was measured between 1.75 kg and 75 kg, mean 14.4 kg, median 7.5 kg. The stent were implanted into different lesions: 39.5% in peripheral pulmonary artery stenoses, 17.5% in coarctation, 28.5% in the arterial duct, 8.5% in systemic vein stenoses and 6% in pulmonary vein stenoses. The implantations were performed for palliativ reasons in 40% or as a definite treatment in 60%. During a follow up period between 1 months and 7.5 years, mean 2.14 years 79 repeat dilations were performed on 60 stents, 15 stents twice and 4 stents three times. The most common reason for repeat intervention were dilation according to patients growth (58%). In-stent restenoses due to intimal hyperplasia were noted in 25.5% and 16.5% restenoses occurred due to compression from surrounding structures. The results of this study demonstrated stent-implantation not only as an effective method for treatment of vessel stenosis in young patients with congenital heart diseases. In addition 1. palliative stenting of the arterial duct, critical coarctation or right ventricular outflow tract obstruction in neonates improves surgical outcome or increases operability. 2. stent implantation can be an attractive alternative to complex surgery i.e. the establishment of Fontan circulation as part of a combined surgical/interventional concept 3. postoperative stenting of restenosis improves surgical results and reduces mortality and morbidity by reduction of the individual number of surgical procedures. Balloon expandable stents were used exclusively as the vast majority were considered to treat vessel stenosis for a lifelong period. The limited experiences on long-term follow-up are encouraging concerning the possibility of repeat dilation according to patients growth. However, the mechanisms of in-stent restenosis are not fully understand. For long-term treatment of vessel stenosis in neonates and small infants the conventional stent technology was found as a major limitation. New stent-designs are necessary. The report encloses two different new stent-technologies in animal studies. Miniaturised stents and delivery systems developed by two different companies are demonstrated. An additional advantage of the new stent designs is the broad variability of the stent diameters. After the initial implantation with a minimum diameter of 4 millimetres those stents can be dilated to a maximum diameter of more than 20 millimetres. Further investigations are necessary to demonstrate the efficacy of the new stent designs in different lesions of human neonates.

Several space telescope projects aim to study exoplanets using high-contrast direct imaging techniques. In order to achieve the required difference in contrast between the light from the star and that reflected by the exoplanet, those systems must use a coronagraph to mask the light of the star and correct in real time wavefront errors with adaptive optics techniques. The aberrations are detected by a wavefront sensor, then a control loop sends a command that modifies the surface of a deformable mirror to compensate for the wavefront errors. However, the performance of adaptive optics systems is often limited by the present quasi-static errors that are caused by the optical path difference between the science camera and the wavefront sensor. A high contrast imaging system has been developed to demonstrate the potential of a control technique which enables the reduction of this kind of error. This control loop has the particularity of using a coronagraph which allows the analyze of the wavefront errors directly from the science camera’s image. The optical system developed within the frameworkof this master’s project has been tested in a laboratory and was also optimized to perform afunctional demonstration in space-like conditions during a balloon flight in the stratosphere. The flight results validated the readiness level of some components that could potentially beused for the next generation of space telescopes.

Full textThe nineteenth century author of traval narrative, hesitating between two contradictory ambitions, which he tries to reconcile, to be literal or to be literary, alternatively writes about the world and rewrites the library. Superimposed on the ideal of a direct narrative which is based on the model of the daguerreotype, the engraving or the copy of a painting, and which imitates the movement of the referential journey, immediately furnishing an order to the text, is the knowledge gained form secondary sources. Contrary to the explorer, the writer is faced with a space already stacked out by literature ; the narrator uses preexisting texts as models or as foils, unless he considers litterature as an economic system were nothing must be saind twice, which produces either a lacuna, a bibliographical reference or a quote. Fictional texts, because they construct homonymous setting, lead to phenomena of spatial confusion. The assimilation of true and fictional space and the reappropriation of fictional structures resolve the problem uncessantly posed by the narrator of the insufficiency of the actual voyage to constitute a literary object, but on the other hand the referential work is jeopradized. The voyage, an object paradoxical, ideal and impossible to narrate at the same time, invites the writer to rehink the traditional balance of the narrative and disrupts the hierarchy between description and narration, the structural assumptions and the relationship to quotation

Pavliha, Marko A. "Implied terms of voyage charters." Thesis, McGill University, 1992. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=39273.
Full textIt addresses specifically the implied terms in the general law of contract demonstrating the similarity between the Civil and Common law systems as well as the need to convert the implied terms into rules of law not subject to exclusion by agreement. The latter proposal is also supported by the doctrine of frustration which has evolved from the notion of implied terms into a principle of law.
The thesis treats the implied undertakings of the shipowner which are to provide a seaworthy vessel, to go the the port of loading with reasonable despatch, to exercise reasonable care and to proceed without deviation.
In addition, it studies the implied undertakings of the charterer being, essentially, the obligation to nominate a safe port and/or berth, and the undertaking not to ship dangerous goods.
The thesis takes into account the impact of the transportation of goods under voyage charterparties upon the environment and suggests how this impact and its effects might be prevented by international law.
Finally, it is submitted that because implied terms have been and are part of the fundamental legal structure of the voyage charterparty in both Common and Civil law, they should become express rules of international law, not subject to exclusion by contract.

Full textAround 1830, Romanticism prevails on theatre stages. The new perspective on performance as a whole leads to a new perception of ballet. However, ballet struggles to assert its specificity and in the battle of words that unfolds, the ballerina, rather than the ballet, becomes the main focus onstage. The ballerina cristallizes the duality that is key to the Romantic vision. She thus finds herself at the heart of a campaign to elevate her to the status of legend, which is also a way for ballet to gain recognition. The narrative of ballet, from this point onwards, has to rely on a mythography. What is ultimately at stake is the definition of the Romantic dancing body. The mythologizing process creates a chaste body : the glorious dancing body. However, this metaphorical body is but the antithesis of another one : the earthy dancing body. Finally, it is backstage in the theatre that the dancing body is unveiled at work, frail and in pain, forever the price to pay for enchantment

Full textAt all times, Man seems to have resigned himself to perform the course of his existence under the influence or even the tutelage of secrecy. Our contemporary society does not infringe upon this rule. Very often, Man appears "loaded" with a secret which inevitably he will not try to discard. Quite the contrary. Secrets seem to show themselves under a protective form with a synchronising function among members of a group. A secret becomes an illusion and renders achievable the modification of a sad or maladjusted reality. It is where the sacred meets the imagination and sometimes even the proscription. A secret, a polysemous and polymorphous object, varies in its sense, its functions, and its forms according to the environment in which it is confronted. This research is presented and is experienced as a voyage, an exploration passing through the abysses of three parallel worlds, those of adultery, illness and freemasonry. To experience such an expedition in such abounding and heterogeneous fields requires the accompaniment of a guide. The companion chosen is the character of the Faust legend. With the help of this guide we have been able to travel into the depths and discover secrecy itself, carrying with us in our luggage, symbolism and imagination…Throughout our voyages, secrecy has become a myth-like narrative entity, drawing its strength from this ability to exist through shadows and opposites, providing us simultaneously with a poisonous charm, potency, power and magic

Full textI try to approach in this paper the journey literary style from a psychoanalytical point of view. This should allow me to treat the more general issue of the relationship of the subject with his desire and his unconscious. For this fascination brought about a continent or a country, wich the journey literary style brings to the open air, mainly from the 19th century onwards, also draws the contours of a mental geography proper to each writer, who thus questions his innermost " internal strangeness " or his lack of being. I shall concentrated in this century. A journey, so it seems, aims to invigorate phantasies or the imaginary and hence desire, through the " exotic object " idealization. But journeys may also correspond to acting-out or symptoms, in as much as it becomes erring or wandering. My research is articulated through two axes : to begin with, journeys are treated as kinds of erring identities ; then, I treat them as factors of sublimation and creativity, mainly through a nomad desire wich seeks to find faraway his nurture and sources. I will study these topics basing myself of the main signifiers on the wrintings of M. Vieuchange, A. M. Schawarzenbach, Rimbaud, G. De Nerval, I. Eberhardt, H. Michaux and P. Bowles
Amirou, Rachid. "Imaginaire touristique et sociabilités de voyage." Paris 5, 1992. http://www.theses.fr/1992PA05H073.
Full textThis thesis is a result of several years of work as tour guide, from 1984 to 1988, with the French youth hostels, I travelled with French groups of tourists to different countries like brazil, china, Thailand, Philippines, Burma, Ireland, Hong-Kong, Malaysia and Quebec. Inspired by a reflection on child's playing extracted from Donald. W. Winnicot(1), this contribution intends to cast a socio-anthropological light on holidays' behavior. Its main hypothesis is that there is a 'homology of structure' (max weber) between the child's area of play and the vacations' space. Child’s play, according to some psychoanalysts, expresses a relationship of confidence established with space and the immediate environment. An area of playing (or space of illusion) is thus created as an intermediary element between the child and the outside world. That imaginary and that infantile experiment of a confident balance with the outside world can be laid down as a symbolic matrix that moulds the vacations' sociality of today. Pilgrimages, group tourism, clubs, holiday villages, camping, etc. Strongly suggest the presence or creation of a proper space time. That space time, along with the themes it conveys - conviviality and retiring into one's shell -, evokes a laymen's pattern of "communitas" on the one hand, and, on the other hand, it somehow actualizes that original relation to the "outside world" where the child lives. The same process of apprehension of the outside world via the creation of a specific

Full textLawrence's novels are landmarks on a quest for completeness. This quest aims at redefining being and the novelistic genre. According to him, the future of man, like the fate of the hero, depends on his respect of the natural law which rules over his being, not as opposed to human laws but both with and against our civilisation. From sons and lovers to women in love, lawrence viewed the future of the novel within european tradition and the future of man within social and historical europe. But the great war and censorship convinced him that his "inner" voyage alone was no solution. So lawrence travelled over the world. His post-war novels are all inspired by the american myth of regeneration as the found it in the works of cooper, hawthorne and melville. They do not express a break in his work. On the contrary, they conclude a quest where completeness is finally that of the couple and his last novel constitutes an outstanding union of the american and the european genres

Full textThe Third Book,A Sentimental Journey,Heart of Darkness and Journey to the End of the Night tell the story of a journey in which the places visited by the main character have less importance than the changes taking place in his consciousness. The journey becomes a quest for the lost meaning of things, through which the authors suggest a reflection on interpretation understanding of the other and the possibility to reach knowledge. These are therefore inner journeys that allow characters to know themselves better. These works, which are modern since they are influenced by various genres, also have a philosophical and metaphysical dimension because they analyse the place and the role of man in the universe

Full textCarl Haller von Hallerstein (1774-1817), German architect and artist, was one of the first European travelers to take part in the rediscovery of Greek antiquity in the early nineteenth century. While he had left Bavaria in 1807 to go to Italy and complete his training, he made friends with other Europeans artists who convince him to embark for Greece. Arrived in Athens in 1810, he stayed in the country for more than seven years, the first three years of his stay mark a turning point in his career. With his group of friends, Carl Haller von Hallerstein participates in the discovery of the statues of the temple of Aphaïa in Aegina and the frieze of the temple of Bassae in Arcadia. Shocked by Lord Elgin’s excesses, Haller von Hallerstein and his companions decided nevertheless to sell the results of their excavations. Meanwhile they participate in the competition at work between the great powers at the time of the awakening of the nations. The action of Carl Haller von Hallerstein and his relatives, such as Robert Cockerell or Olaf Brönstedt give a decisive impuls to the emergence of scientific methods of archeology. Their group gathered under the name Xeneoin is distinguished by careful taking of surveys, attention to the sites explored and a willingness to share their conclusions. The National and university library of Strasbourg retains most of Carl Haller von Hallerstein's archives, and they testify to this quest to make Greek antiquities known a few years before the upheavals at work in Greece

Full textThis work is an expert analysis of the orienting activity of professional midfield soccer players when they have not the ball in a set up attack situation. It is about a simulationnist approach with aims two goals: -to move on to a global explanation of the subjects cognitive functioning. - to develop a preliminary reflection to the realization of a computerised expert system able to pilot a player in a simulated game phasis. In choosing the expert analysis one formulates the hypothesis that subjects orienting activity is essentially built on knowledges. In accordance with the expert analysis focused on the psychological activities of speed process behaviours in dynamic environments one supposes that these knowledges can be of different types (strategic, tactic) and of a schematic nature. The method used combines systematic observation (of the situations and of the behaviours face to them) and verbal data collected facing the video-tape. It aims to uncover the knowledges used by the subject and the level of processing where they run. The results of the observations make appear regular associations between situations and behaviours. Nevertheless each situation is frequently linked to several behaviours (always the same) and the strengh of these associations can varie according to the situations. The schematas (knowledges) model is proposed to interpret these facts. The verbal data, in accordance with the observations already done on the experts, suggest a low consciousness level of the observed regularities. This allows to suppose that the knowledges used are highly automated. The results interpretation leads to a cognitive competence model outline of the subjects orienting activity

Full textBased on the premise of a diversification in inmates’ behaviors, this thesis proposes to model socializing processes within a carceral configuration. Indeed, considering the lives they lived, inmates adopt unprecedentedpostures and practices. But, in reality, the extent of empirically observable effects of those dynamics contradicts the hope of being able to describe those latter in addressing the diversification phenomenon head-on. How are prisoners socially brought to adopt the practices they embrace ? Using an approach both diachronic and semiological, this analysis provides itself with a sociological tool able to reveal the motions agitating peoples’ lives in prison: the fallback on religion

Full textThe ambition of this thesis is to elucidate the process that leads the traveller to produce a compilation of graphic and written notes, photographs and documents. If this production is to be carried out during the journey itself, the traveller must think about the materials that will be necessary to the execution of the work, to catch reality. But a certain form of mental preparation is also necessary. The images achieved by travelling artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, William Turner, Eugène Delacroix, Félix Ziem, Paul Gauguin, Zao Wou Ki and, more recently, Titouan Lamazou, Georges Wolinski, Michel Montigné, Bertrand de Miollis, Elsie Herberstein, Stéphanie Ledoux and Nicolas Jolivot, are loose-leaf or in albums, which set out specific strategies aimed at acquiring knowledge about an environment and its inhabitants. The study of the ways and the meanings of producing a travel sketchbook throws light on the spirit of artistic and spiritual inspiration which was the driving force of the work. Back in his or her workshop, the artist retrospectively organises his sketches in the light of his or her experience, thanks to technical and artistic means. The travel sketchbook has become popular because its small format encourages an individual freedom to express within the framework of a book, whether private or intended for disclosure. For some professional artists, this size, which is used and kept secretly at home, proves out to be a summary of sketches and discoveries that will provide material for works, which may be offered to the public. The travel sketchbook is also an accretion of rough drafts, technical demonstrations and insights into its author’s psychological depths. Paper, as a medium adapted to travel, stimulates artistic and literacy research. It is at once plane and volume, instrument and narrative, time and movement, work and achievement. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how the travel sketchbook by performing these functions, can give a holographic account of a journey, and can thus constitute a work of art in itself

Full textIn this these we discuss of the main finding emanating from the french, usa and canadian incentive market. The first part study relationship between the work, the stimulation and the firme. The second part dismantle the behaviour of market: what in an incentive program? why do companies use them? what is the role of the travel agency or incentive house, hotelier, cruise line, airline and tourist board? why are incentive progra mas important to all of these people? the third part provid particularly the canadian incentive travel market and this futur: horizon 2000. The key futur trends emerging this market have a potential for the futur growth: 30% for the french market and 15% for t he us market and 13% for the mondial market. Looking head, the survey forcasts on annual average growth rate in the value of canadian incentive travel market of the 15%. The current global value of around 250 000 millions dollars. This these concluse that incentive travel have again a good perspectives

Full textTravelling appears to generate some kind of writing practice but not all journeys produce creative genius or even a sufficient will to leave a written trace of the travel experience. One population in particular is surveyed : independent travellers or people known as backpackers or globetrotters. Our work aims at establishing an ethnography of travels writings, both those produced while travelling – notebooks, visitor’s books, blogs, body ornamentation – and those which result from travelling – Lonely Planet’s letters to the Editor. This thesis stands between two anthropological fields, tourism and writings and aims at revealing the different graphic motivations and functions of the travel writing, or how we move from casual, recreational writing to a self-orientated one revealing one’s own ideas about travelling as much as the need to find oneself and the Other. Each of these writings has its own characteristics and functions offering direct accounts from a population which is considered as elusive by anthropologists. The Lonely Planet travel guide correspondence will supplement the profile of these tracellers, their motives for writing and travelling, underlining the peculiar connection between these travel writers and the vade mecum. In this way, an ethnographic observation emerges about this specific link between reading, writing and travelling

Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Several different treatments currently exist in order to reduce its incidence and symptomatology. Revascularization by coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) remains the most effective option, however the risks associated with this intervention are considerable. Intra1aortic balloon pump (IABP) is a mechanical cardiac assist1device primarily used for hemodynamically unstable patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting. The pump increases diastolic coronary artery blood flow and reduces systolic left ventricular afterload. Use of IABP has been described in various situations but the indications regarding its installation remain weak and controversial. The purpose of this master’s thesis was to assess the impact of preoperative installation of IABP on both mortality and complication rates in patients undergoing CABG. A systemic review of the literature and a meta1 analysis were therefore completed at the Institut universitaire de cardiologie et de pneumologie de Québec. While results showed a reduction in mortality with IABP in randomized controlled trials, such was not the case in retrospective studies. Moreover, many limitations reported in randomized controlled trials demanded careful interpretation in order to identify real observed effects. In light of the controversial results found, we cannot fully encourage the widespread use of preoperative intra1aortic balloon pump, as opposed to the current trend in the literature. In order to better characterize the associated risks regarding this practice, further investigation is required.
