Abstract:
A white clover ( Trifolium repens ) system, based on one ozone-sensitive (NC-S) and one ozone-resistant (NC-R) clone, has been developed as an indicator to estimate the effects of tropospheric ozone on plant biomass production. A reduction in the vegetative biomass ratio (NC-S/NC-R) of the clones was correlated with increasing concentrations of ozone during a 28-day exposure period. However, the mechanism of ozone sensitivity or tolerance at the biochemical or molecular level is not known. Superoxide dismutase isozyme activities in the two clones did not respond differently to ozone treatment.

Morella cerifera (L.) Small, the Wax Myrtle, forms both arbuscular mycorrhizas and cluster roots which generally are regarded as alternative adaptations for phosphorus acquisition. But whether or not arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) provide any benefit to M. cerifera is not known. Nevertheless, AMF can proliferate extensively within the litter leaves that accumulate beneath M. cerifera. The main objective of this study was to determine if AMF are beneficial to M. cerifera host plants in the presence of leaf litter.

What will happen to ecosystems if species continue to go extinct at the high rates seen today? Although ecosystems are often threatened by a myriad of physical or chemical stressors, recent evidence has suggested that the loss of species may have impacts on the functions and services of ecosystems that equal or exceed other major environmental disturbances. The underlying causes that link species diversity to ecosystem functioning include species niche complementarity, facilitative interactions, or selection effects, which cause process rates to be enhanced in more diverse communities. Previous studies in our lab have revealed that the C4 proteins of geminiviruses are involved in the determination of the direction of leaf curling symptoms. However, the underlying mechanisms remained to be explored. Therefore the objectives of this study are to identify the key amino acid residues involved in the determination of leaf curling directions. Previously, it has bee
