Abstract:

Abstract:

The Six Sigma and the Lean Production are two processes using by enterprises in Brazil and the world wide. Nowadays the integration of those two processes is a challenge to enterprises that search a more efficient way to reduce their wastes and get adapted to the needs of their markets. With this objective the Lean Sigma appears, been applied in the enterprises differently. The dissertation objective is to understand, trough two case studies, how enterprises are connecting Six Sigma and Lean Production in their improvement processes. It was verified that are several ways to run the processes in parallel: in the first enterprise, the two processes was integrated and them shared into two process in parallel. The second enterprise showed the opposite approach, beginning disintegrated, in parallel, and them running together in one improvement processes, called Lean Sigma. The dissertation presents the systematization of the improvement processes of these two enterprises, organized as follow: Global vision and Objectives, Organizational Structure and Improvement Method. Was verified the general approach used in the improvement process and that the integrated approach, that consider the peculiarities of each process, showns as a best option to run Lean Production and Six Sigma in parallel. The research presents, as a result too, a systematization proposal for Lean Sigma, considering the case studies and the consulted literature.

Abstract:
Lean Six Sigma is one of the tools organizations use to help their processes run faster and thus maximize their profits. It is a thorough approach that can reveal defects in companies' processes through examining customers' needs and its statistical data Its popularity spreads fast from the early adopters such as General Electric, Toyota or Motorola and many companies are keen to get their hands on it and achieve similar success as above mentioned. Czech companies are not different. There is, however, a tendency to lay it aside based on first time impressions. The most frequent reasons are: complexity, need to make dramatic changes in the company's culture and high initial costs. Main goal of this thesis is to show that Lean Six Sigma does not necessarily have to be a thorough approach. It can also be used as a one-time tool to improve company's processes, just by picking the right parts and combining them in the right order. This thesis describes the most useful tools and also shows how they can be used in the real situation. By aligning them in a row it also creates a framework for Lean Six Sigma implementation projects which can be used repeatedly. One chapter also describes various problems that might occur during the implementation and provides readers with possible solutions to overcome them.

Abstract:

Legislation design methods currently employed by individual California state legislators allow defects to be built into the bills that eventually become laws. A dearth of consistent performance measures for legislation makes it difficult to quantify the magnitude of the problem. There is evidence, however, that defective legislation causes legislative rework, amendments, repeals, human suffering, and economic loss.

Individual legislators need a repeatable and data-focused process to prevent and correct legislative defects before they are submitted to the California State Legislature. This thesis presents an adapted Lean Six Sigma (LSS) framework to be used by individual legislators for investigating societal problems and designing legislative solutions. An analysis of the literature has identified LSS areas that need to be adapted for a legislative environment. Use of the framework by individual legislators is expected to generate evidence-based legislation with customized solutions and performance measures that can deliver maximum value to citizens.

Abstract:
The slow rate of corporate improvement is not due to lack of knowledge of six sigma or lean. Rather, the fault lies in making the transition from theory to implementation. Managers need a step-by-step, unambiguous roadmap of improvement that leads to predictable results. This roadmap provides the self-confidence, punch, and power necessary for action and is the principal subject of this research. Unique to this research is the way the integration of lean and six sigma is achieved; by way of an integration matrix formed by lean implementation protocols and six sigma project phases. This integration matrix is made more prescriptive by an integrated leanness assessment tool, which will guide the user given their existing level of implementation and integration. Further guidance in each of the cells formed by the integration matrix is provided by way of phase methodologies and statistical/non-statistical tools.

The output of this research is a software tool that could be used in facilities at any stage of lean implementation, including facilities with no existing lean implementation. The developed software tool has the capability to communicate among current and former project teams within any group, division, or facility in the organization. The developed software tool has also the capability to do data analysis (Example: Design of Experiments, Value Stream Mapping, Multi-Vari Analysis etc.). By way of the integration matrix, leanness assessment and the data analysis capability, the developed software tool will give managers a powerful tool that will help in their quest to achieve lean six sigma.

Transport companies and all logistic services such as cross-docking, storage and third-party logistics (3PL) related to them, are experiencing some difficulties facing the constant changes in the market and even more, meeting all costumer demands. To face and adapt to these emerging needs of the market, transport and logistic companies, started to look on their inside, studying their processes and applying tools that can provide speed with high quality services. Lean Six Sigma is one combination of two distinct processes, Lean and Six Sigma, united into an systematic effort to reduce waste and cost, while simultaneously improve and standardize procedures in order to achieve high quality levels and financial incomes. To reach this goals, transport ad logistics providers are looking their inside, and try to improve procedures to use their resources efficiently. The case study will show that the tools and Lean Six Sigma principles can be used to improve efficiency using the company resources and to reduce casualties with the cargo that the company makes the transport or the cargo that are stored at the warehouse. To meet this goal, DMAIC tools (Define, Measure, Improve and Control) are used to reduce non-valued-added process

NPS is a top-tier research university that provides mid-grade officers from the Navy, Army, Air-Force, Marines, and Coast Guard, as well as DoD civilians and foreign partners, the opportunity to study full-time in pursuit of a masters degree. The education gained improves the performance of military officers, which provides for better defense of our nation. The student in-processing method currently in use is confusing, time-consuming and wasteful of school and service resources. There is little coordination between the different military branches and the school concerning school specific and service exclusive check-in requirements. With little oversight or synchronization, bottlenecks form at several locations within the process, creating poor resource utilization and frustration on the part of the school, service, student and student family. The primary goal of this project is to study and provide recommendations for improving the student in-processing method at NPS using the Lean Six Sigma methodology.

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to investigate how lean six sigma can be used in a process improvement project, and how to apply lean six sigma in a real-life situation. The task is to decrease the amount of late deliveries to a factory from a nearby logistics facility, where production materials are stored in. The study will be performed as a case study. The case study begins with a literature review, where scientific publications of the subject are studied. After this, a real-life process improvement project will be carried out in a company. During the project, the learnings from the literature and the tools and methods of lean six sigma will be applied. There will also be examples given on the application of lean six sigma. As a result of this study, suggestions for improvement were made. Implementing these suggestions would help to reduce the amount of late deliveries. Due to the limited time of the project, these suggestions could not be completely carried out to be used practically during the case study. Therefore, it was not possible to report the actual benefits of these improvements. However, a pessimistic annual assessment of the potential benefit was 485,000 euros. The results of this study can be used very well because the tools used in the project can be applied to any field of business. The potential benefit for the process under investigation is not entirely generalizable. However, many companies face the same kind of problems in their processes, for which, this study can be of help to

Abstract:
Due to changes in customer demands, companies often need to improve their processes and approach them in different ways. Waste elimination is very important for every company in their quest to reduce costs and use resources efficiently. Variation reduction helps keep processes steady and more accurate. Two powerful tools for process improvement are Lean and Six Sigma, when combined can bring many benefits to organizations that decide to implement them. The amount of continuous improvement tools that each methodology possesses brings the team a great variety of resources to attack and reduce variation in any process. Lean and Six Sigma methodologies have gain a lot of popularity in recent years. The improvements they bring to companies not only in an economical but as a way to develop professionals are impressive. These methodologies are changing mindsets worldwide and giving quality a new meaning. Lean Six Sigma certifications are a must for every professional looking to improve processes in their organization. Philip Morris International subsidiary in San Jose, Costa Rica has a great challenge on trying to improve processes in their production facilities to keep with goals and demands from headquarters in Laussane, Switzerland. This project is involved with the use of Lean and Six Sigma tools to improve the cigarette reject rate in the Marlboro line at Philip Morris. The project is divided in three parts. First an introduction to Lean and Six Sigma and why they are so important for companies now a days. Second, explain the DMAIC methodology used for the realization of the project. Third, explain the implementations made to improve the process and reduce cigarette reject rate.

Successive transformations within manufacturing have brought great efficiencies to producers and lower costs to consumers. With the advents of interchangeable parts between 1800 and 1850 in small arms manufacturing (Hounshell, 1984, pp. 3-4), mass production in the early 1900s in automobile manufacturing (Hounshell, 1984, pp. 9-10), and lean production in the early 1950s in automobile manufacturing (Womack, Jones, & Roos, 1990, p. 52), the state of manufacturing has continued to evolve. Each time, the visionaries that catalyzed the transformations were forced to overcome the inertia of the status quo. After convincing stakeholders of the need for change, these change agents: 1. Established a vision for the future 2. Committed resources to attain that vision 3. Studied the root causes for current methods 4. Proposed a new solution 5. Implemented the new solution 6. Quantified the results and sought future improvements. This basic process to implementing change is remarkably simple yet incredibly powerful. By explicitly emphasizing the need for root cause analysis, the process recognizes that improvements will be transient if the root causes of prior problems are not fully understood and resolved. When deploying a lean production system, an understanding of lean principles and tools is necessary but therefore not sufficient. Rather, implementing a lean production system should follow: 1. An analysis mapping the root causes of current production methods back to technical issues and the organization's strategic design, culture, and political landscape. Only by fixing the problems that led to the current production system can a lean transformation be sustained. 2. A detailed plan which achieves a transformation in both the organization
(cont.) production system.

Abstract:
This research deals with the optimization of preventive maintenance (PM) and process improvement for maintenance management in service sector. To stay competitive and sustain long-term profitability, process improvement methodologies have become strategically important for maintenance management in recent years. These include well-known approaches such as Total Quality Management (TQM), Business Process Reengineering (BPR), Six Sigma, Lean and Lean Six Sigma (LSS). The adoption of LSS and PM optimisation in the maintenance services sector, however, is still at an early stage. There has been very limited research in this topic reported in the literature. This research has explored the LSS and PM optimisation through case studies in vehicle fleet maintenance. This research has made contributions to knowledge in the quality management and, in particular, the process improvement methodology and service quality for the vehicle maintenance service sector, but potentially also in a broader context. The main contribution is the establishment and demonstration of a sound methodology and model to integrate LSS and PM optimisation in the vehicle fleet maintenance. The model also provides guidelines for further development of a practical process improvement framework. The proposed model is therefore considered as a basis for further empirical work relating to the process improvement in the services context. Further, this study has developed a total cost model to optimise the PM activities based on both the PM maintenance cost and the quality loss cost. There have been two parallel developments for determining the optimum PM interval, one based on the maintenance cost without considering the quality loss, and the other based on the quality loss without considering the maintenance cost. A novel approach combining the maintenance cost and quality loss has been developed. Moreover, the total productive maintenance (TPM) implementation in the service process and the integration with the LSS/PM optimisation has enhanced the theory and practice of continual improvement in maintenance. The implementation of the integrated model of LSS and PM optimisation through case studies in vehicle fleet maintenance has provided an impetus for establishing best practices within the organisation under study. The implementation of this model has also increased the future performance of the organisation. It has enabled the maintenance management based on a strong customer-supplier relationship by satisfying customer requirements. The proper utilisation of the resources and the application of LSS tools and techniques will upgrade the company procedures and reduce the maintenance non-conformities, with the key process parameters continually improved and ultimately optimized.

Abstract:
This report is a study of departure punctuality at the SJ train depot in Hagalund. The purpose of the report has been to find underlying patterns and reasons behind late departures.   The theoretical framework that has been used is a combination of Lean and Six Sigma, where the management tool Lean has its basis in optimal resource utilization and minimizing of waste. The Lean concepts that have primarily been used are Visualization and Standardization, this since those are areas in which SJ have been lacking.   The practical work behind the report has been done using the Six Sigma method DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control), where a large focus has been put on Measuring and Analyzing.   The quantitative data that’s been used has come directly from SJ’s own late departure reports, where trains departing 5 minutes or more past the scheduled time are considered to be late. This lateness is automatically registered, where the scheduled departure time is called Right Time (RT) and RT > 5 hence indicated a late departure.   The reason behind the lateness is also noted for all departures, but this data is entered manually and the reason is chosen from a limited, predefined list of lateness codes (JDE codes).   A data mining of the late departure statistics for the Timetable period 2012 (December 11th 2011 to December 8th 2012) revealed large flaws with the manual lateness reporting, where inconsistent usage of the JDE codes made it impossible to discern any underlying patterns in lateness factors.    To circumvent the data flaws an experiment was mad during November 2012, where all late departure reporting during the month was monitored to ensure proper JDE code usage. The result revealed a large previously unknown source of delay, “Human error”, which had hitherto been hidden in the catch-all code “Miscellaneous”.    A visualization of the automatically collected departure data, the RT data, in turn revealed clear issues during personal shift changes, and also concluded 1pm-6pm CET to be a late departure heavy time of the day. The visualization of departure data was also compared to the visualization of trains’ time spent at the depot, the so called turn time, where trains spending less than three hours at Depot Hagalund could be shown to affect the general departure punctuality to a higher degree than other trains. Through use of regression analysis it could also be shown that trains arriving late with a short turn time, to a higher degree also departed late, whilst trains with a longer turn time were seemingly statistically unaffected by delays in arrival.

ABSTRACT A GUIDE FOR CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES TO APPLY LEAN SIX SIGMA METHODOLOGY DÜ
gME, Fatma Zehra M.S., Department of Civil Engineering Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Yasemin NIELSEN April 2008, 245 pages The construction sector is an immensely important industrial sector in terms of economic and social impact and also employment facilities. Nonetheless, much research has pointed out a gap in terms of labor productivity, quality, performance and responsiveness to customer needs when compared with other large industrial sectors
sectors that have recently experienced huge gains and cost reductions via methods like Lean Six Sigma. In this study, the construction industry will be examined for determination of the potential Lean Six Sigma implementation level and expected benefits from its use. The author conducted interviews with three companies in order to find out their readiness for such a management by innovation. One of the companies was selected for further study due to suitability of their organizational structure, innovative strategy and interest in this study. By taking up this pilot study and Lean Six Sigma principles as references, five roadmaps are generated as a guidance to implement Lean Six Sigma methodology for companies indicating the general steps before and during the implementation. The proposed roadmaps and applied questionnaire/interview questions developed in this thesis will also be helpful to construction companies to scrutinize their own structure and performance levels and as a guide on how to pursuit improvements through the proposed implementation of the Lean Six Sigma methodology.

Abstract:
The oil industries constitute a significant part of global economic, depending on whether the value of its output, exports or jobs created. The industry affects directly the national economy, and contributes to Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Oil industries are considered the main supplier for many sectors such as industrial, transportation and so forth. On the other hand, the oil industry has faced many problems such as environmental impact, exhausts, climate change, waste, and safety; as well as customers' and employee dissatisfaction. Errors and waste in the oil industry have serious costs and consequences. Hence, a systematic methodology of quality in the oil enterprise has become an urgent necessity to minimize or eliminate waste and provide a health, safety, and environment (HS&E) performance. One of the most efficient systems of quality is the integration between Six Sigma methodology and Lean Enterprise. Lean Six Sigma (LSS) has become widely used in several areas such as manufacturing, service, and health care. The research literature does not provide a framework for implementing Lean and Six Sigma in the oil industry. A systematic general framework of the LSS implementation is developed which includes eight steps - statement, leadership, committee, deployment, prioritize, implement, review, and finalize. Then, the effectiveness of the LSS methodology of solving problems that the oil industry faces was demonstrated by providing several case studies applied successfully in different areas in the oil enterprise.

The pharmacy operations of three military, Medical Treatment Facilities (MTF) were observed, to determine possible process improvements and cost saving mechanisms that may be achieved through Lean Six Sigma methodologies. After mapping the processes of each facility (one large, one medium, and one small) each was modeled and validated in order to forecast potential savings, increases in efficiency, and/or waste reduction while either maintaining or improving customer satisfaction (i.e., processing times). The research proved that Lean Six Sigma methodologies can be implemented within pharmacy operations, often at little or zero cost, while realizing significant savings and increased customer satisfaction.

Abstract:
Six Sigma is a business improvement strategy that aims to improve process performance using a structured methodology that identifies and removes the causes of defects in manufacturing and business processes, while implementing the lean concepts attempts to remove wasteful activities from those processes. In practice, the Six Sigma strategy and the Lean philosophy are combined and often viewed as one integrated philosophy, where the philosophy of Lean Six Sigma simultaneously removes wasteful activities from a process and reduces the variability of that process. This thesis research reviews the concepts and implementation of Lean thinking, Six Sigma strategy, and the integrated concept of Lean Six Sigma, with emphasis in service organizations. Most importantly, this thesis summarizes the critical success factors for implementing Lean Six Sigma within a service business environment and categorizes them within a proposed multi-level taxonomy that can be used by service business units and service providers to improve the success of Lean Six Sigma implementation.

This thesis is focused on the proposal form filling error rate in life insurance. The theoretical part of the thesis describes main aspects of the methodology Lean Six Sigma, which will be used to decrease high error rate. Lean Six Sigma is widely used in today's companies to improve business processes by increasing their sigma. The methodology is an integration of two separate approaches, both invented in the beginning of the 20th century. The aim of the integration is to bring together the best of both of them. The practical part of the thesis shows how the seemingly separed approaches Lean and Six Sigma can work together. Lean was used to improve the process for insurance company's sales force, and Six Sigma was then applied to decrease the error rate of the forms. Both of the improvements were successfully implemented in the company and led to a desired outcome.

Healthcare costs throughout the United States are on the rise, drawing increased scrutiny from government officials and Congress. The cost of pharmacy operations and pharmaceuticals is growing at a rate that is alarmingly higher than that of the total cost of military healthcare itself. Recent congressional legislation has essentially given the Department of Defense the ultimatum to cut costs for beneficiaries wherever possible, or risk having benefits arbitrarily cut by Congress. In the face of this possibility, cutting costs through better business practices must be explored, particularly within the area of pharmacy operations. This project explores the potential cost savings that can be realized by implementing Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology in the pharmacy operations of the DoD Medical Treatment Facilities (MTF). This research proves that implementing Lean Six Sigma methodology will improve military pharmacy operations, often at little cost, while realizing significant savings and increased customer satisfaction.

Abstract:
A new reality, where human labor is replaced by automated machines is causing production management to rethink how they can steer the production to meet their customers demand. There is a gap of values, techniques and tools to communicate with the processes existing in the new modern factories, where data sometimes is the single output. This thesis purpose was to develop a model out of Lean and Six Sigma, as an answer to how modern factory could work with an information system, reaching the ideal state.   Through a theoretical analysis, Lean and Six Sigma differences in values, techniques and tools were weighted by the ideal state and recommendations from literature. Through a unstructured interview and system design review with a logistic group at a Swedish Modern Factory (SMF) a concept of an information system was developed. A project to test the model was initialized, where Define, Measure and Analyze phase was conducted. The model was thereafter modified from the projects implications.   The result was a Lean Six Sigma model which values are customer focus, ideal state, result orientation, committed leadership, education and involvement. The technique follow a DMAIC cycle and continuous improvements through a current to future state approach. The used techniques were considered Six Sigma heavy, where Leans principles are considered into the models values. The information system supports the model in setting the processes of the factory in either stability or potential state, where they differ in Measure and Analyze phase. The test at SMF developed several assignable causes to variation on the component As lead time. The model adapted after the test to involve a Measurement System Analysis (MSA), before setting the next current state of the process.

Abstract:
The healthcare sector is promoting the use of process improvement approaches resulting in several successful improvement projects. However, evidence, based on literature, points out that in a significant number of cases, healthcare organisations have failed to sustain the deployment of process improvement tools for long-term continuous improvements. Lean Six Sigma, which incorporates the speed and impact of Lean, with the quality and variation control of Six Sigma, is considered to have a high impact. Nevertheless, to reap the full benefits of LSS, it is necessary to develop a systematic approach to sustain LSS in healthcare organisations. Organisations have been shown to approach change from only three ways: functional, operational and ad hoc, neglecting a holistic or systemic analysis. Hence, the literature has not provided a systemic approach to change and improvement, which also includes the assessment of readiness for change. Therefore the objectives are to carry out an extensive literature review and survey to identify the reasons for organisations failing to sustain Lean Six Sigma. A list of factors critical for successfully sustaining Lean Six Sigma are identified and analysed using the ISM methodology. With the view to support healthcare professionals in integrating Lean Six Sigma in their organisation, this research develops a new framework (SLSS) to shift focus away from short term and towards long-term improvement. Furthermore, using a semi structured interview approach experts validate the framework. The framework will allow professionals to pay more attention on strategically important factors when integrating Lean Six Sigma in their organisation. The major outcome of this research is that the relationship between CSFs is analysed providing a distinctive view on how to handle them. Common approaches have focused on other aspects of research and were content with having identified CSFs, which led to the misconception that all CSFs are equally important. Hence, this research provides a more sophisticated view on this topic. In addition, the SLSS framework was build to fill the gap between implementation-focused and organisational culture focused frameworks. It can be used in conjunction with the organisation's preferred implementation framework in order to guarantee that the strategic component is covered.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Increasingly present in industrial environment, the continuous improvement methodologies structured and systematized the implementation and employment of techniques, tools and practices of process improvement, which allow reducing lead time, enhancing customer satisfaction, decreasing process variability and raising product quality. In this context, supported by a framework, what this study aims at is to review the use of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma in a real case belonging to the national industrial park. Hence, a case study was chosen in a company from the automotive industry, insofar as its relationship with continuous improvement. The company had already been using the techniques and tools for over a decade and it was provided an overview of its approach and, in addition, two cases to have their solution compared. It was observed that the company stands in an upper intermediate stage according to the developed framework and it was also highlighted that Kaizen is the main improvement means used.
