Full textThe construction industry is a growing market and there is a huge demand for buildings today. The time for production and production costs for a project are being reduced because of the competitive market. Waste within the construction industry can both contribute to a longer production time and higher production costs. Previous studies confirm that waste can amount to 30-35% of the cost of production. NCC is building a concept house, NCC Folkboende, which is a site-based concept that generates an efficient construction process with lower production costs. NCC in Umeå developed the concept Folkboende. Production time and production costs are based on Umeå's estimated hours. The production time is difficult for other districts to maintain. This makes it interesting to follow the current study to find possible causes. Lean Production is a tool derived from the automotive industry. By focusing on eliminating waste, the time and materials can be saved. Lean identifies eight types of waste; Overproduction, waiting, reworking, untapped creativity, storage, overwork, movement and transportation. To identify waste in this study, the Activity Sampling method has been used. The method involves making many observations to measure how time is used in relation to the work. With enough observations, a result is obtained that becomes reliable for a long time of work. The result shows in a comparison, between the calculated hours and actual hours worked, that there is a difference. Furthermore, waste does not have such a big impact that it would be one of the major causes. To increase efficiency, education with all concerned before the production begins can be recommend based on the study. An experience bank that registers which supplementary work that has been done in the production will also be a recommendation.

Full textThe meaning of production planning is to effectively coordinate a project's activities and resources in the most effective way possible. Through good planning, potential conflicts can be avoided. Work preparations is a tool that reviews the operations, mapping workflow and can find the most effective way to carry out work on. Work preparations can be used to share experiences and standardize operations within the company. The purpose of this report is to study work preparations and what tasks production management and skilled workers have when work preperations are done. The study was conducted as a case study with two methods of data collection, a literature review and interviews. In the study, production managers, supervisors and skilled workers were interviewed to identify how Skanska is working with work preparations in the district of Kristianstad. The study also aims to analyze the situation and compare it with literature and with established knowledge in order to highlight possible improvements. In Skanska’s business management system, Vårt sätt att arbeta, work preparations is described as a detailed planning of an operation. The aim is to take advantage of everyone’s skills, safe work environment, quality and environment, and to increase predictability regarding productivity. Risks that are deemed significant to the project's time, finances, quality, environmental or health should be prepared at a detailed level of production. The interviews show how employees at Skanska are working with work preperations. Approaches vary between individuals and workplaces. All respondents believe work preperations is a good tool for planning in production and gladly uses it. But one of the reasons for not using it, is the lack of time. Respondents also recognize the importance of utilizing all coworkers’ skills and knowledge when producing work preperations, and encourages cooperation in the workplace. Respondents in the study has a positive attitude to work preperations and think it aids them in production. Thus, do not the opinion of work preperations have to change, however, not all respondents understand the importance of work preperations and what effects they can have. The understanding of how important this kind of planning is must increase. Skanska’s management should convey the purpose and objectives of work preperations to all employees, in that way the understanding of work preperations can improve and reduction of wastage in construction can take place. Work preperations takes time and therefor they are not always prioritized. There is however time to be saved when activities begin due to questions and uncertainties are eliminated. Time can also be saved by not having to take measures of produced errors. The lack of time shouldn’t be a reason for not doing work preperations, on the contrary work preperations saves time. To make work preperations a standardization in production, the management are required to work more routinely with work preperations.

Full textIn Sweden housing has been given further focus to build cheaper and faster. Construction have constant requirements to build more effective and at the same time maintain their quality. The industry evolves all the time and many businesses have created own tools and methods to keep improving the efficiency and quality of their work. The original ideas came from Toyotas production ideas from the early 1900. The theories about quality thinking and efficiency have been popular to implement and the concept has for example developed within construction and is called Lean Construction. Since there is a lot of theory within the field the writer felt that the subject should be relevant to examine and see how Lean Construction is working in reality. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate if the construction firm should be able to implement some tools and methods that you can find within Lean Construction. Would these tools and methods be able to generate more efficiency in the construction firm’s daily work. To be able to implement this study, a questionnaire has been sent out to 3 different construction firms. In the questionnaire the respondents rank the different tools and methods they thought had efficiency and the one’s that didn’t have any efficiency. Where they answered which tools and methods within Lean construction that they thought would improve the efficiency and if they already have worked by a method that should rise the efficiency. Most of the respondents have heard of the Lean Construction before but not everyone had used it. Between the different construction firm’s opinions about what kind of methods about efficiency varied. A wide study of different methods was made to determine what kind of methods should be used when writing this essay, the different methods have been balanced between each other to determine which should complete the collected data. By using the questionnaire and collected theory, a qualitative method was selected. The benefit with this method was that the writer could compare the collected data with the theory. The writer chose only 3 construction firms so that the study shouldn’t be generalized but instead be more open for interpretive picture of how the work within construction looks like. To be able to answer the purpose, the writer set some limitations, by only focusing on the tools and methods within Lean that should contribute to a higher efficiency at the construction firm. Through the respondents answer it emerged that methods within 5S can be applied within construction. The collected theory and the empirical data were analyzed and led to the conclusion. The study showed that the 5s method is the easiest method to implement at the construction firm. Respondents meant that some of the methods within 5S already is applied in their daily work.

Full textThe Swedish infrastructure will receive large investments until year 2029. This leads to big opportunities for construction companies within the industry to grow and increase their profitability. To generate good profit, it is important that the available resources are used in the best possible way so waste can be minimized, and efficient processes can be achieved. Taking the sustainability aspect in consideration, 40% of the global emissions can be linked to the construction sector. In order to reduce the environmental impact and contribute to sustainable development, the construction sector needs to minimize waste and achieve efficient processes. The focus of this thesis is regarding waste within construction industry and civil engineering projects, because of the limited research conducted within the field. The aim of this thesis was to investigate waste for the production process regarding road projects. Further, their causes have also been investigated. This has been done by a case study on a construction company. By mapping the waste and their causes the aim has been to produce a recommendation to streamline the company´s operation. Further, the goal for this study has also been to contribute to the research on waste in the construction industry, with a focus towards road construction projects. An exploratory researched been used for this thesis, to achieve the aim. This to increase the understanding for the field of study. The research approach is inductive hence, the study is based on observations from interviews and focus group, to a generalization of a theoretical model. A qualitative strategy has been applied for the thesis since the aim has been to create a deeper understanding for the field of study and give the possibility to adjust the research depending on what is found in the data collection. To collect data for this thesis a literature study, interviews, focus group and qualitative secondary data has been used. Further, triangulation and review by the supervisors has been used to ensure the credibility and quality for the thesis. The study identifies waste in waiting, unnecessary transportation and improperly execution for the production process in road projects. The waste arises primarily for the activities excavation, blasting and transportation. The causes can be divided into two categories: external and internal. External causes emerge from clients, suppliers and geographical location. This in the form of long mass haul distances, resource shortage, provision of construction documents & decisions and competence & routine by the machine operators. Internal causes arise from guiding and control over the production. The proposal for the production process was developed through the software DynaRoad to be able to create a mass haul plan in order to reduce the unnecessary transports and increase the resource efficiency. The recommendation for the company where this thesis has been conducted is to put a lot of effort into their planning process. This will result in better project basis, which leads to increased efficiency when the waste can be minimized.

Full textThis thesis concerns implementation of Lean Administration within administrative support-processes. The thesis examines how tools of Lean can contribute to the standardizing of documents and the handling of documents in order to eliminate waste. In addition, quality assurance and higher efficiency are obtained while it is possible to reach a higher capacity for value-adding activities. The empirical findings are based on action research conducted at a trading company where the supporting handling of documents concerning initial samples was studied closely. The background to this study can be traced to the increased global competition which has brought more companies to work with improvements to a larger extent. More companies have also decided to outsource parts of their operations to be able to focus on their core competencies. As an effect of this trend, different new actors have specialized in other areas than production. When there is no production to make more efficient, these companies have directed their work with improvements to other areas, such as the administration. The purpose with this thesis is to; based on Lean Administration, give suggestions for a new handling system of documents concerning the support processes for initial samples. The result of this work culminates into a proposal which is presented as a template created in Excel. The template has been created during the work with the thesis and it is built with support from principles and tools from Lean Administration. The Excel template is made to replace current documents in the specific administrative process and by doing that, contribute to standardization and increased efficiency to the work with initial samples. The template also creates options to treat customers’ different needs and it also increases quality through a built-in fail proofing feature. The template can be considered to be generalized and possible to implement at different companies working with initial samples. However, it may be required to change the graphical layout to company-specific needs. Towards the end of the writing process thoughts about developing the Excel template to a total quality document was raised. This document could contain all information concerning quality for a specific article. This idea gives opportunity for further work. Suggestions for further research within Lean Administration are given since there is still a lot to investigate within the field. The way the research was conducted, by viewing the work processes with Lean-glasses, can be generalized and applied to other areas than the processes concerning initial samples.

This Master thesis is concerning Lean in an administrative section, instead of production. Lean is nothing new, it has its roots back to the 1930s with the founders of Toyota. Lean is about reducing waste and visualizing flows in companies. Lean is used to find values and value streams in the business, creating flows without waste and to implement these flows more efficiently by continuously work with improvements.
The purpose of this Master thesis is to study how Lean can be implemented in a section of a company where the processes are related to administration, not production, to reduce waste, lead time and structuralize the work process. Further a foundation will be created for a model to implement Lean in other administrative sections.
Through interviews, following orders in the flow and by studying documents it has been established that Lean can be used and implemented in an administrative section. By using Lean work processes can be made more visual, which makes it possible to standardize the process and in that way reduce waste and lead time. This can be made by creating a price database, price model and by using visual planning.
The model created is a pyramid divided into five steps. The foundation is to take responsibility for ones own work, and to inform the employees and give them meaning with changes. The next level is to engage the employees. Third step is to visualize the flow, activities and the problems. The next step is to simplify the flow, and the top of the pyramid is to continuously improve the flow.
The conclusions of the Master thesis are that Lean is a way of working with good and common sense. Lean can be implemented in a section by making the flows visual and then identifying problems, waste and improvements. Further Lean cannot be implemented in a section if the employees do not take responsibility of their own work, or if there is not a visual leadership.

Full textPurpose: To explore the possible benefits with the implementation of Lean methods to measure performance, availability and efficiency in transportation, including the use of a value stream map to identify waste. Furthermore, to observe how the benefits with a route optimization eventually can minimize waste and reduce costs related to transportation as well as the reduction of environmental emissions, urban noise and security. Methodology: To achieve the purpose of this study and to solve the research questions, a case study and a literature study has been combined and carried out. The case study contains observations and interviews which has been executed in order to gather information related to how the case-company work with transportation on a daily basis, the usage of standardization and the management of route planning. Moreover, an implementation of the proposed route optimizations has been executed with the purpose of gaining knowledge related to the outcome. Finally, an analysis and discussion has been performed where the empirical results are studied and compared with the literature findings. Findings: The implementation of Lean methods to identify and reduce waste based on performance measuring tools, such as value stream mapping and the use of route optimization, showed several advantages. The identified advantages were shorter driving schedules for the chauffeurs, a reduced overall mile distance, a more optimal degree of filling in the driver trucks and more efficient time spent while loading and unloading the trucks. The last advantage mainly affecting the availability and performance of the overall vehicle efficiency. Some of the advantages were interpretable into monetary terms in order to provide an insight into any cost savings. Recommendations: To gain better and more profound results in any further studies, it is suggested that: the case company map out all transports carried out in order to assess the profitability of certain driving routes, as well as to examine how all transport can be geographically divided using the presented material in this study; more thorough observations of drivers during other weekdays to further identify problem areas and improvement opportunities ought to be done; standardization and implementation of Lean methods in related processes in the company for continued pursuit of profitable operations. For example, by reviewing the receipt of goods from suppliers and reviewing the option of having local suppliers; lastly, all staff gets training and education of Lean methods and standardized work for additional elimination and reduction of internal NIT activities, such as waiting time.

Full textABB Robotics is one of the largest manufacturer of industrial robots on the global market. One of their factories is located in Västerås where this work was executed at the final assembly line for large industry robots (SSIR). The final assembly line have recently been converted to a takted one-piece flow. Now ABB Robotics want to identify waste in the new assembly line and investigate the possibility to use multiple takt times to increase their capacity. The project was divided into two parts where the first part was assigned to identify waste and the second part to analyze the use of takt time. A current state mapping was performed to increase the understanding for the flow and the issue. Value stream mapping (VSM) was executed in an existing template with the use of data from the current state mapping and cycle times from recent time studies. Waste was identified according to lean with the help of VSM, spaghetti diagram and the disruption log. Today waste arise from the worker having to move to collect tools and material. Cycle times used for the VSM were later on used for calculations regarding capacity and takt time. Different takt times and mix of models were compared to give recommendations regarding the use of multiple takt times. Solutions on how to decrease and measure waste was presented. Two of the solutions were to change layout of station 1 and to implement a new materials feed system. With todays cycle times ABB Robotics are recommended to only use one takt time. The same goes for the case when the cycle times are shortened evenly. If the gap between the average cycle time for heavy models respectively light models would increase, then it would become interesting to further investigate the use of multiple takt times. The gap would increase if the light models are rebalanced to include operations by station 2 and in this case the capacity would increase with 4,5 % with the use of multiple takt times instead of one takt time.
Rost, Emma. "Förhöjt kundvärde i tjänsteprocesser : En studie av Scania Finans AB ur ett leanperspektiv." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Kvalitetsteknik, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-78922.
Full textDifferent business sectors are increasingly applying lean production. The philosophys focus on customer value and its establishment of efficient and defect preventing processes appeals multitude actors in different market sectors. Since customer value should be a general focus for all organizations and efficient, quality proofed processes are main objectives, the lean philosophy should be suitable for more areas than just production. In particular, customer value is vital in the market segment of service business. Since the objective of service business is to create good service and thereby add customer value, a successful application of the lean concept in this particular segment should be possible. However, the lean philosophy is mainly designed to suit manufacturing companies and there are few concrete guidelines on its applications in other areas. The company ScaniaFinans AB has recently introduced an initiative to apply lean in their organization. This master thesis aims to analyze the possibility of applying lean in service business with ScaniaFinans as model. The sales process of the company has been analyzed with the use of value stream mapping in order to identify waste. Process mapping was conducted at workshops held with employees, in order to identify obstacles and waste in the sales process. Subsequently, a time study, where waiting times and process times were measured, was conducted. The mapped processes along with the time studys result were converted to value stream maps to enable value stream analysis. These analyses pointed out legible obstacles and allocated waste in the processes. They therefore proved to be a useful tool in service business. Some adjustments of the most common metrics and symbols were necessary but the value stream analyses still fulfilled their purpose; identifying waste in the process. Several identified obstacles at ScaniaFinans are characteristic in service business. For instance, the company suffers from unstable processes with several defects and inadequate information. It is possible for service companies to make tremendous improvements by increasing their process focus, which also was illustrated at ScaniaFinans. High variation in total lead time is also a main obstacle at ScaniaFinans. Standardization is a common lean tool in order to eliminate variation, although not applicable in service companies. Since handling a fluctuating demand is vital to service companies the standardization application is not suitable in that area.ScaniaFinans is therefore recommended to handle the variation with use of process control in order to attain a stable process. A factor increasing lead times at ScaniaFinans is frequent disruptions causing loss of concentration. The disruptions are mainly due to the participation of the customer in the process, which also is characteristic in service business. To attend the disruptions, ScaniaFinans are recommended to change the distribution of employees and accordingly make one individual responsible for all disruptions every day. This allows the remaining employees to execute tasks undisturbed and waste consisting loss of concentration is reduced. This master thesis illustrates how the lean concept can improve a service process by reducing waste and therefore increase the added customer value. The report implies how application of lean enables allocation and elimination of waste using value stream mapping in service companies. Since the main identified obstacles are characteristic to service companies the problem is general and is of interest for several actors in the service business.

Full textPurpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibilities for improving the efficiency of district heating installations in houses by using Lean. This is done by answering the following three questions: How is a district heating installation implemented? What types of wastes can be identified in the process of district heating installations in houses? How can wastes in the process of district heating installations in houses be reduced? Method: In order to fulfill the purpose of the study a case study has been conducted at Jönköping Energi, a supplier of district heating. Interviews and documentation studies have been used as data collection methods. Literature studies have been made to collect information on theories that were used to evaluate and analyze empirical data. Results: Wastes in the process of district heating in houses has been identified in the study. The biggest identified waste is the wait that occurs between the sub-processes, where wait reach up to 20 % of the total lead time of the installation. By implementing an information system, introducing changes in scheduling and start working in with parallel processes this wait can be reduced. Implications: This study shows that by using Lean the process of district heating installations in houses can be more efficient and that the lead time for the process can be shortened by eliminating wastes. The study also shows that by using bucketless planning, lead time can be shortened further when scheduling adapts to the process. Limitations: The study was carried out based on only one case study. By increasing the number of case studies and by carry those out in more than one company the generalizability of the results will be increased.

Full textLundbergs Plåt AB is a small company situated in Jönköping. Their main task is to process different kinds of steel such as stainless steel. Lately, they have shown an interest in Lean production.
On the basis of the situation mentioned above, we developed the purpose to find and decrease the non value-added wastes in the production at Lundbergs Plåt AB. Out of this, we also developed and answered two questions:
- Which wastes can be found with help from a value stream mapping (VSM)?
- In what way can these wastes be reduced and how can these reductions contribute to an improved production?
VSM is the method used to find the non value-added wastes. In the context of Lean production this is a reliable method because it shows in a good way the wastes in a manufacturing process. The VSM was performed on the family of food bin, which is one of the company’s more recurring products.
During the analysis of the value stream we found several wastes in the manufacturing process. All categories of non value-added wastes are represented. Examples of identified wastes are unnecessary transportation and working movement. The limited access to operators who have the right competence and who are allowed to process the food bins, is in our opinion one of the factors that generate most of the non value-added wastes.
Several action proposals were worked out and a conclusion is that one action proposal can generate a reduction of different kind of wastes. The action proposals that can reduce the most of the non value-added wastes are a change of the layout and competence building. This means that one action proposal can reduce or eliminate several wastes at the same time.

The Construction industry struggles with quality deviances and defects in the building process. Various kinds of problem are for example expensive costs for production, defects in quality and negligence and ignorance in the industry in general. The development of productivity in building process has not progressed at the same rate as companies within manufacturing industry who are using the Lean Production philosophy.
The purpose whit this degree project is to bring knowledge about what kind of deviances and defects that exist in the industry, and to recommend suggestions for improvements in accordance with Lean Thinking. When you speak about Lean in the construction business it is called Lean Construction. Lean Construction has its theoretical background in the engineering industries Lean Production and Lean Thinking.
Lean Production is an industrial production method which purpose is to increase the effectiveness of production. It originates from the car-industry in Japan. The concept of Lean Thinking is a further development of Lean Production and it includes all industries, not just the manufacturing industry. To work according to Lean means that you all the time tries to achieve constant improvements and to identify and eliminate all kinds of waste in time and materials. Waste can be seen as an activity that do not create any added value for the customer but still however consume resources.
While implementing and using Lean in your business corporation you have to analyze how a potentiate can be achieved outgoing from the existing production process. Some main elements within Lean are Kaizen, which means constant improvements, and Just In Time.
There have been many studies about waste in production in the construction industry. Some are introduced in this report. Activities that have been identified as waste are among others reworking, waste of material, overproduction and misplanning causing waiting times among employees. Based on these ascertained wastages we have formulated the questionnaire study.
The study does not show large differences between local managers/team leaders and construction workers when it comes to their opinion about what kinds of deviances and defects they find as frequent. The both professions agree that waste can be reduced, by the way of for example efficacious material handling on the building sites and better communication and planning on several levels.

Full textThis project has been carried out in the department for the production of fire-resistant glass products at one of Sweden's leading glass suppliers, Martin G Anderson. The company currently experiences low profitability for their fire-glass products. The reason for this is due to problems in the form of long lead times, messy areas and general disorder in the department. The goal of the project has thus been focused on locating wastes in the production process for fire-resistant glass that causes these problems, as well as reducing lead time and at the same time assuring a high process quality. The methodology of the work is of an analytical nature, where a large part of the time has been devoted to the collection of data in the form of observations, interviews and literature studies. The project was initiated by investigating the current situation and performing a current situation analysis. Manual timings were carried out during four weeks in order to get a picture of what the lead time looks like today. Subsequently, tools within Lean were used to analyze the information compiled in the current description. Examples of tools used are control diagrams, 7 + 1 lean waste and the root cause analysis 5 why. Once the known state and collected data were analyzed, the Lean tool 5S was applied to reduce the waste identified in the process. A new manual timing was performed where the result shows a 19% reduction in lead time. Finally, proposals for further work are presented. These proposals include, among other things, continued application of the 5S tool, but also how a more sustainable process can be achieved based on social sustainability.

Full textThis Bachelor's Thesis has been performed at Mape Sweden AB with the purpose of elimi-nate or reduce the non-value adding activities within the purchasing process. By examining the company's purchasing process for tools and spare parts, the goal is to find solutions that will entail time-efficiency in the purchasing process. The work in this thesis is of qualitative nature. This approach was chosen to obtain an un-derstanding of the current situation with qualitative methods. To collect data the group per-formed several observations and interviews, literature reviews and a benchmarking at a dif-ferent manufacturing company. To develop proposals for improvements to the company, a spaghetti diagram was conducted tracking all movements at goods-withdrawal and goods-receipt. A time study was conducted to compare the times before and after implementation of improvement proposals. The current situation analysis showed that purchases are made by different people resulting in that there is not a standardized approach. Spaghetti diagram of movements in goods-withdrawal and goods-receipt showed that there is numerous movements and some of them are unnecessary. Proposals for improvements was conducted based on the information from current situation analysis together with information obtained from benchmarking. The pro-posal for goods-withdrawal was that the workers themselves enter goods-withdrawal in the SAP-system. The proposals for goods-reception was to receive the goods once a day, place a shelf for non-stocked tools and a shelf for supplies in the tool shed as well as making demands on suppliers to always have the part number and stock location on the packing slip included with all deliveries. .When implementing the groups proposed improvements, the total time spent on goods-receiving and goods-withdrawal was reduced from 6 hours, 40 minutes and 23 seconds to 1 hour and 58 minutes, which represents a decrease of 70%. For future work the group recommend that the improvement proposals also be implemented on other types of purchases within the company and that the company further investigate the benefits of tool cabinet and scan-ning systems.

Full textThe aging population and higher occurrence of chronic diseases today has healthcare facing a very high occupancy and limited resources. To meet rising demands, many healthcare institutions have adapted operational strategies traditionally used in more industrial settings such as Lean production. In this study, the value flow during emergency visits to the heart emergency at Danderyds hospital (Danderyds Sjukhus AB) was mapped and analysed through observations and interviews. The aim was to identify potential changes that might render a more efficient patient flow and improve the operations at a healthcare institution working in accordance with Lean healthcare. The findings from the study show that waste related to Transport, Motion, Waiting, Overproduction & Over processing, Defects, Confusion and People exists at the heart emergency. The most common source of waste is related to routines and compliance to them among the staff, all though some issues related to communication and workplace culture were also discovered. Our main suggestion is therefore to establish standardised routines that are easy to follow for the staff at the clinic, to make emergency visits and patient flow more efficient. The study and its findings can be seen as a general contribution to the discourse regarding Lean healthcare, value stream mapping and analysing. It can also be used by healthcare institutions similar to the case clinic, about to perform an analysis of the value stream.

Full textIn the construction industry it is important to find ways of working that in the long term lowers construction costs so as to produce a product that requires less consumption of resources, but which also continues to be competitive. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how employees at Skanska's construction project "Trädgårdarna" in Boglundsängen, Örebro, work to minimize wastes (non value-adding activities). It also seeks to identify common wastes that occur, both generally on construction sites but in particular on the building project "Trädgårdarna", and finally to come up with suggestions on measures to minimize these wastes. This thesis is based on a qualitative method in the form of interviews and observations. When this thesis was written production was at an early stage. The results of this thesis demonstrate that there are both strengths and weaknesses regarding how work on "Trädgårdarna" is pro-gressing. Although the production was in an early stage, during the time of writing this thesis, the results show that the staff appreciates orderliness at their workplace and try to maintain this through different means. Overall, the staff work well to reduce wastage in the workplace. The wastes which have arisen primarily did so due to deficiencies in the design and/or production planning. To reduce the wastage rate and maintain an effective work it is of great importance to have a well-planned design, to implement work preparations as frequently as possible, to have an orderly workplace, to take advantage of the staff's knowledge and commitment and to use some form of coordinated delivery system to minimize inventory and waiting times.

Full textOver the past few years, the construction industry has focused on the development of logistics. This is to a large extent because the competition within the industry has become tougher and thus the margins have diminished. This essay will therefore examine the internal logistics ofthe Björnflokan project in Borås. The construction will include three apartment buildings, one parking garage, one preschool and premises. The construction area is highly exploited and therefore limited, which entails logistical challenges. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the internal logistics work in practice, and whether or not it is possible to streamline the production within the Björnflokan project through better planning and communication. The study has only examined the internal logistics regarding the production of the apartment buildings. The survey relates to the qualitative methods, thus the study contains interviews of a semistructured nature together with supplementary field of studies. The interviews were held with officials at Serneke, who all are a part of the management at the Björnflokan project. The study also contains a literature review in order to deduce the theories in the result. Within the results of the study observations and summaries from both the interviews and the field studies are presented. From the collected data it becomes apparent that Serneke has a verywell-developed logistics plan and that it is founded on the theories Location-based system(LBS) and Location-based management system (LBMS). The theories are largely applied to minimize waste and increase the efficiency of the material flow. The analysis on the other hand, weaves together the results and the theory, and by doing so connects each of these parts to the issue. A qualitative research method presupposes that the analysis is based on interpretations of both the results and the theory. The analysis shows that further streamlining is possible, but it also indicates the risks that manifest themselves when only looking at optimization. It suggests that it may not be optimal to streamline the production to the extent that it eliminates waste in the form of unnecessary material transfers. This is due to the containment of critical elements that can be found within the production.

Full textThe costs of house construction in Sweden have increased conspicuously over the last years. Construction companies have a hard time maintaining low project lead-times as well as keeping costs within the financial plan, which in turn has affected market price and created a growing discontent amongst buyers. Research indicates that the increased production costs are in many ways caused by the large amount of waste, in form of materials and labor, which is common within today’s construction projects. Efforts to eliminate waste has led many companies to adapt Lean Thinking, a system with roots in Japanese car manufacturing industry, containing tools and methods designed to identify and eliminate all kinds of waste. From all this, new ways of construction has been introduced on to todays market. Industrialized housing is a relatively new concept, which has eliminated a lot of waste and risks by moving construction away from an on-site project into prefabrication within factories. This study focuses on how Lean Thinking adaptation and industrialized construction can help lowering construction costs. A case study has given us the opportunity to follow an industrialized construction project up close, as well as the opportunity to study an organization that has implemented Lean Thinking. The study shows that it is possible to reduce common waste within construction industry through Lean Thinking and industrialized housing. The project lead-time for industrialized housing is also much shorter compared to traditional construction methods and therefore the costs are kept low. By continuing to evolve industrialized housing through Lean Thinking it would be possible to further reduce waste and consequently enabling an even smarter way of construction.

Full textThe biggest challenge construction companies are facing at the moment is reducing the unnecessary costs and labor as well as to streamline the work. This is a matter and an investigation that has been done multiple times in recent years because this is a major problem in most construction companies. This report is commissioned by Peab for the purpose of identifying wastes and critical disorders, then drafting action proposals to reduce waste of time and costs. Four different, completed construction projects have been investigated, commissioned by Peab, and are located in Stockholm. These projects include the reconstruction of a roadway intersection and new construction of pedestrian and cycle tracks. These four projects vary in scale, giving a more varied result compared to four very similar projects The gathering of information for this work has mostly included lean construction with the various waste in the work industry, as well as the different principles and methods of lean construction, such as Just-In-Time. Other studies on the construction process have also been made, more specifically the production phase, the planning of the work. The difference between value creation time and non-value creation time has been dealt with, as well as risk management and how to conduct a risk analysis. Interviews have also been conducted with the aim of identifying the most critical wastes and interferences. The gathering of facts from the interviews has been reported in the results. It emerged that the four most critical wastes were defects/rework, waiting, transportation and extra processing. In summary, action proposals using lean construction, interviews and the knowledge from this report have been developed to reduce these disturbances and wastages with help of for example Jidoka and PDCA to increase time and cost efficiency in the production process. In short, the concept of waste and disturbance can be defined differently. Waste is an activity that does not contribute anything to the business, and a disturbance is a matter of disturbing the work.

Full textPurpose – The purpose of this study is to study packing activities and internal transports and its impact on delivery quality in a manufacturing setting. To answer the purpose three research questions were formed: - How can packing activities and internal transports be connected to deliver quality? - Which wastage and deficits can be found within packing activities and internal transports? - How can the management of packing activities and internal transports contribute to an improved delivery quality? Method – The chosen method for this study was a case study with a qualitative alignment on the handling of data. The empirical data collection consisted of interviews, observations, and document studies to strive for triangulation which increases the credibility of the overall study. Literature reviews was conducted as a parallel process throughout the study, to establish a connection with the collected empirics. This gave the study substance and clarity within existing knowledge in the science field. By analysing empirics and the theoretical framework, the research questions could be answered. Findings – Packing activities and internal transports was found to have a strong connection to deliver quality. Through this set foundation and with additional empirics it was possible to identify wastage and deficits within the different activities at the case company. Utilizing common theories such as, Jidoka, 5S and TQM lies as improvement propositions on how a company could handle wastage and deficits within their value chain. Implications – The study was formed after being provided a problem area by the case company. Therefore, the study followed a problem-solving characteristic regarding the specific problem within the case company’s operations. All improvement propositions have not been conducted and therefore the future adoption should be analyzed regarding the results. Limitations – Experienced problems are specific for the case company and it can be discussed regarding if the problems are similar with other businesses. Generalizability and the goal to apply the results in different manufacturing industries has been a challenge to reach.

Full textEnvironmental sustainability is a prerequisite for a sustainable economic development andfor competitiveness, the environmental as well as the sustainability work, can through varioustools, be developed. The purpose of this study has been to identify environmental aspectsand then to provide practical measures aimed to improve the environmental improvementactivities. The thesis work was carried out at AstraZeneca Sweden Operations in Södertälje, the siteproduces active pharmaceuticals ingredients and is responsible for the manufacture, formulation, filling and packaging of end products. Sweden Operations site is AstraZeneca'slargest high-tech facility, the facility is divided into seven different sections called PET. Thiswork has been performed at PET Turbuhaler, at one of the production lines that produces theTurbuhaler Symbicort Inhaler. In this work, the focus has been on studying the environmental aspects by using the GreenPerformance Map (GPM), it is a method of continuous improvement tools in the “lean andgreen” area and can be used as a tool for improving the environmental performance. In thiswork the GPM method has been used to identify the environmental aspects of the PETTurbuhaler production line in AstraZeneca. Furthermore, a number of these identifiedenvironmental aspects have been analysed deeper from an economic and environmentalperspective. By focusing on cost-driven improvements in the environment and by involvingmore employees, the ‘step-up the pace’ of improvement can be increased.Based on the identified aspects, a map of environmental aspects was drawn up, representingmaterials and energy. Furthermore, these environmental aspects have been discussed toassess the environmental and cost savings.

Full textThe present study was conducted at Astrid Lindgren’s Värld (ALV), an amusement park and popular tourist attraction in southern Sweden. This study focuses on the park’s internal warehousing processes. The present study focuses on the warehousing process in one of 6 branches, namely that which serves the shops in the park. The aim of this paper was to investigate how the internal warehousing processes can be made more efficient and design a plan of action to remedy the identified issues. The current practices create problems regarding orders, more specifically what needs to be ordered, how much, and items missing from deliveries. Employees also perceive the process to be inefficient and time consuming. The study is based on three questions: (1) what is the current internal warehousing process? (2) What issues can be identified with the current process? (3) How could the internal warehousing process be improved using the theory of total quality management? The study uses total quality management strategies, mainly Lean manufacturing as a theoretical framework together with data collected from interviews and focus groups. The results reveal that (1) there is a common work process in the warehouse at large, however, 3 different approaches are employed depending on whether the order is planned or urgent. Unplanned, urgent orders are seen as unnecessary and should be reduced. (2) Employees and managers identify the process’ main issues to be: time consuming work, unstructured work, an excessive amount of items in the warehouse, suggestions for improvements go unheard, communication issues, and new routine non-conformity. (3) In conclusion, the study recommends five different improvement strategies for the efficiency of the internal processes: implementation of 5S, process owner, pull system, Lean board and a communication-plan. 5S best corresponds to the identified issues at ALV and was therefore chosen for implementation. However, it is key to implement it in tandem with a communications plan in order to ensure proper distribution of information and conformity with new routines.

Full textIntroduction: Today’s high demand on customer specific products has led to an upstream of organizations that are adapting an make-to-order production strategy. Seeing that these organizations compete by obtaining low lead-times and the ability to present unique and affordable products, a need has been created to use lean-based methods in attempt to reduce waste, create an efficient production, thus to gain competitive advantage. The issue is that lean-methods are not developed for these types of organizations. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compile a model that describes how an organization that is characterized by make-to-order strategy and with a high variety in products manufactured in low volumes can implement value stream mapping to create an efficient production and thus gain competitive advantage. Methodology: The study is carried out through a case-study on a company that manufacture based on the specification of customer-orders. To perform a value stream mapping, relevant literature was collected and studied. Consequently, interviews and observations were conducted and constitute the empirical data. Subsequently the literature review along with the empirical data constitutes the conclusions and findings. Results: The case company is characterized by a complex manufacturing of unique products with crossing information- and material flows which complicates value stream mapping. The processes consist of manual cutting, semi-manual cutting, plywood cutting, component manufacturing, and assembling. Processes with similar operations were spread throughout the manufacturing plant and the assembly points were identified as bottle-necks. Conclusion: A model that describes how an organization that is characterized by make-to-order strategy and with a high variety in products manufactured in low volumes can implement value stream mapping has been compiled. Furthermore, additional aspects have been identified that are significant in the implementation of value stream mapping within this form of production.
