Abstract:
The prevalence of leaping across delphinids indicates it has an adaptive benefit. I examined leaping behaviour in dusky dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus) according to signalling, social facilitation, and prey capture hypotheses. I quantified the effect of leaping on group behaviour and fission-fusion and the behavioural context of leaping. I observed dolphins in Admiralty Bay, New Zealand during 171 focal follows totalling 157 h. Data were analysed using generalized estimating equations. Clean leaping had a positive effect on party fission () and foraging behaviour (). Coordinated leaping cau

Abstract:
This study aimed to examine the impact of a Gallery-supported Arts Award programme on young people who have offended. Using a mixed methods approach, which principally employed qualitative and biographical techniques, this research embedded an innovative typology based on the memoirs of Brian Dillon. The typology helped to stimulate the memory recall of participants, and provided structure to the collation and analysis of the data. Conducted in two phases, I began by examining the impact of the Gallery-supported Summer Arts Colleges run from 2007 to 2011 on young people. In the second phase, i

Ion channel models are related to non-equilibrium statistical physics, fluid mechanics and electromagnetism. Some classes of ordinary differential equations that model ion channels can be seen as a limit of finite state-space continuous-time Markov chains. The purpose of this thesis is to qualitatively investigate the numerical results of systems of equations that incorporate ion channels modeled by such Markov chains and an electrical circuit model of a single neuron with isopotential extracellular space. This may be useful for making more detailed micro-physical simulations of neurons. A sub

Taking Utagawa Yoshikazu's woodblock printed game board Monster Yarns as my case study, I will analyze how existing imagery and game play work together to create an interesting and engaging game. I will analyze the visual aspect of this work in great detail, discussing how the work is created from complex and disparate parts. I will then present a mechanical analysis of game play and player interaction with the print to fully address how this work functions as a game. While some elements of game play are problematic, I propose that the highly visual nature of Monster Yarns counteracts these

Bioinformatics, as a field, rapidly develops and such development requires the design ofalgorithms and software. RNA-seq provides robust information on RNAs, both alreadyknown and new, hence the increased study of the RNA. Alignment is an important step indownstream analyses and the ability to map reads across splice junctions is a requirement ofan aligner to be suitable for mapping RNA-seq reads. Therefore, the necessity for a standardsplice-aware aligner. STAR, Rsubread and HISAT2 have not been singly studied for thepurpose of benchmarking one of them as a standard aligner for spliced RNA-se

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to explore the applicability of transaction cost theory to an emerging market context, and to complement it with institutional theory to achieve a closer fit. The research questions are: (1) Which causes of high transaction costs are perceived by firms in the research site? (2) How do they respond to these costs? The responses could range from internalisation, through cooperation, to the new concept of trading isolation, which is the first of two observed gaps in the literature. (3) Could an institutional perspective help to explain firms’ responses, if they differ fr
