This chapter explores how the act of English language learning came to be framed as a moral project during the Korean English fever, focusing on the role that such aspects of morality played in rationalizing the social inequalities reproduced and exacerbated through the neoliberal promotion of English. Its analysis focuses on representation of successful learners of English in the conservative press, which frequently published stories of elite English language learners throughout the English fever. The chapter shows how these stories consistently downplayed the privileged provenance of the successful learners, and instead highlighted the extraordinary effort they put into learning English, presenting them as moral figures—ideal neoliberal subjects who immerse themselves in careful and ethical management of oneself. It is through such representations that English language learning came to reframed as a Foucauldian technology of the self, and a moral responsibility for neoliberal self-development.

This chapter considers the contributions that may be made to the evolution of an ethical and compassionate form of artificial general intelligence (AGI) by integrating knowledge graphs for classical economics, education, health, and space science. Classical economics offers pathways to the evolution of a form of AGI characterised as moral, ethical, and providing a capacity for building trust-based social capital of societies. Pathways that can be elucidated by applications of machine and deep learning to knowledge graphs of the fields of classical economics, ethics, and social capital. A network platform based on the application of distributed ledger technology is proposed to provide the basis for eliciting insights from interdependences between an ever expanding digital-quantum cloud hosting similarly empowered knowledge graphs for an ever increasing myriad of advancing fields. Knowledge graph sketches for education, health, space science, and other fields germane to building social capital serve to illustrate this proposed process and attendant business opportunities.

Aristotle’s great discovery about moral development is that we learn to be good through practice—i.e. we become virtuous by doing virtuous actions. This chapter explores Aristotle’s account of how learners can perform virtuous actions in the right way before they are virtuous, and pays special attention to considerations of continuity between the practices of the learners and those of virtuous people. The chapter shows that (and explains why) Aristotle alludes in his ethical treatises to emotional resources available to non-virtuous people that allow learners to somehow aim at the noble in their actions and grasp the value of virtuous actions before they possess virtuous dispositions of character. Because learners can make use of such emotional resources before having virtue, their practices can resemble those of virtuous people not simply in their external outcomes, but also in the relevant internal motivational aspects.
