Learning idioms has always been difficult for L2 learners of English. Drawing on a cognitive linguistic perspective of idiom learning, this paper reports on an empirical study that investigated the effects of incorporating the knowledge of conceptual metaphor and metonymy in L2 classroom instruction of English idioms. The study confirmed the efficacy of applying the conceptual metaphor- and metonymy-based ways of teaching to Chinese college-level EFL learners. It further revealed the different degrees of teaching effect towards different types of metaphoric idioms. While no significant progres

Twitter Idioms are one of the important types of hashtags that spread in Twitter. In this paper, we propose a classifier that can stratify the Idioms from the other kind of hashtags with 86.93% accuracy and high precision and recall rate. We then learn regression models on the stratified samples (Idioms and non-Idioms) separately to predict the popularity of the Idioms. This stratification not only itself allows us to make more accurate predictions but also makes it possible to include Idiom-specific features to separately improve the accuracy for the Idioms. While it has been shown that non-figurative multiword expressions are acquired with language exposure, the learning process for idioms may be different because the figurative meaning adds complexity to the learning task. Idiom vocabulary overall develops relatively late, but it is unknown to what extent children are exposed to idioms, and what kinds of idioms they encounter. Idioms in Japanese are crucial and intricate for pupils to acquire, as they necessitate rote memorization. Occasionally, the figurative interpretation of an idiom involving a Japanese language cannot be inferred from its literal definition. Consequently, pupils must commit them to memory without relying on any mnemonic devices. An effective approach to consider is the application of the principles utilized in cognitive linguistics. Specifically, this involves elucidating the connection between the literal meaning of words and their figurative meanings by examining three rhetorical devices: met
