Abstract:
The construction of dams and hydro-power stations are some of the most common anthropogenic changes of watercourses and rivers. While being important to humans and society by providing electricity, these obstructions of watercourses can have severe consequences for the aquatic ecosystems. One consequence is that dams often hinder the important movement of migrating fish species between habitats. This can lead to decline and even extinction of important fish populations. To prevent these negative effects, a number of different fish passage systems, including nature-like fishways, have been deve

Planners who are involved in locational decision making often use raster-based geographic information systems (GIS) to quantify the value of land in terms of suitability or cost for a certain use. From a computational point of view, this process can be seen as a transformation of one or more sets of values associated with a grid of cells into another set of such values through a function reflecting one or more criteria. While it is generally anticipated that different transformations lead to different ‘best’ locations, little has been known on how such differences arise (or do not arise). Exam

Abstract:
The routing of the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline plays an important role in the future energy security of the European Union. The natural gas pipeline is planned to run from the natural gas fields in the Caspian Sea through Turkey. This project is a case study for a Geographic Information System (GIS) least-cost route analysis of a section of the proposed pipeline in Western Turkey. The route analysis comprised of weighting multiple types of criteria in a compiled risk assessment map that was analyzed by a least-cost algorithm to display the least hazardous route through the study area. The total engineering budget is divided into three variates which are earthwork, mixed aggregate, and pavement. The proposed model is effective and reliable without the need for iterative trials and prior knowledge of statistics.

To serve data traffic with varying degree of importance while maintaining the lowest operational expense is one of challenges faced by network engineers. Critical data traffic must be protected from termination caused by unwanted failure that could happen along the path, but at the same time, the operational expense spent on the path protection must be as minimum as possible, which ensures the Intern

I identified suitable locations for highway wildlife crossing mitigations across the TransCanada Highway (TCH) in the area of Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Park (MRGNP), British Columbia. Highways fragment natural landscapes leading to habitat loss, reduced ecosystem connectivity and direct wildlife mortality though motor vehicle collisions. Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) are vulnerable to the effects of habitat and population fragmentation. Highway wildlife crossing mitigations improve ecosystem connectivity by increasing the permeability of transportation corridors to wildlife. I ident

Other than establishment of preservation area for wildlife conservation, ecological corridors which provide connectivity between isolated habitats has also been considered as an important remedy to reduce the impacts of habitat fragmentation. Ecological corridors not only provide routes for migration, food resources, and safe shelter for wildlife, but also enhance gene exchange between otherwise isolated populations such that might reduce the risk of species extinction in a reg
