Kurup, Viji. Quality in Medical Education. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199366149.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
Staying current with latest developments in the field of patient care is now universally considered to be a standard of care. The same standards have not been adopted in medical education, however, and many educational techniques used to train physicians are now outdated. This chapter reviews the evidence in medical education with respect to quality of three critical elements: the teacher, the process, and the learner. Students and faculty have different perceptions regarding the characteristics of effective teachers. Modern teaching methods no longer stress lecture-based sessions, but include techniques such as interactive learning and blended learning. Simulation is also an effective tool for learning technical skills, and for crisis and team training. When technological tools are used, they should be designed to enhance the learning experience. A number of studies show that learner engagement is the key factor in the learning process.

Abstract:
George Boole (1815–1864), remembered by history as the developer of an eponymous form of algebraic logic, can be considered a pioneer of the information age not only because of the application of Boolean logic to the design of switching circuits but also because of his contributions to the mass distribution of knowledge. In the classroom and the lecture hall, Boole interpreted recent discoveries and debates in a wide range of fields for a general audience. This collection of lectures, many never before published, offers insights into the early thinking of an innovative mathematician and intellectual polymath. Bertrand Russell claimed that “pure mathematics was discovered by Boole,” but before Boole joined a university faculty as professor of mathematics in 1849, advocacy for science and education occupied much of his time. He was deeply committed to the Victorian ideals of social improvement and cooperation, arguing that “the continued exercise of reason” joined all disciplines in a common endeavor. In these talks, Boole discusses the genius of Isaac Newton; ancient mythologies and forms of worship; the possibility of other inhabited planets in the universe; the virtues of free and open access to knowledge; the benefits of leisure; the quality of education; the origin of scientific knowledge; and the fellowship of intellectual culture. The lectures are accompanied by a substantive introduction that supplies biographical and historical context.

Brownemiller, Angela. Raising Thinking Children and Teens. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216004639.

Full text
Abstract:
In her newest book—written for both lay and professional people in all walks of life and cultures—author, lecturer, educator, Angela Browne-Miller presents a set of tools and awarenesses adults can apply to raising and teaching children and teens. Full of daily life advice, as well as profound ideas for changing the way we think about learning, Raising Thinking Children and Teens: Guiding Mental and Moral Development takes readers into the thinking processes of young people and shows how to reach them, to help them, to empower them. “Moral intelligence” is key, and Angela Browne-Miller explains how to guide young people in developing it. She likewise explores human potential and ways to raise thinking children who will maximize theirs. Examining both the folklore and the scientific debates about intelligence, she shows the danger of mislabeling and how to watch for and prevent labeling at school, in the home, and in society in general. The book also treats topics such as the quality of care and safety in school and preschool settings, effects of the physical environment on learning, the role of organization in thinking, childhood stress and hypochondria, child abuse outside the home, and family violence.

Escher, Beate, Peta Neale, and Frederic Leusch. Bioanalytical Tools in Water Quality Assessment. IWA Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.2166/9781789061987.

Full text
Abstract:
The first edition of Bioanalytical Tools in Water Quality Assessment was released in 2012. The field has exploded since and the second edition updates and reviews the application of bioanalytical tools for water quality assessment including surveillance monitoring. The book focuses on applications to water quality assessment ranging from wastewater to drinking water, including recycled water, as well as treatment processes and advanced water treatment. Emerging applications for other environmental matrices are also included. Bioanalytical Tools in Water Quality Assessment, Second Edition, not only demonstrates applications but also fills in the background knowledge in toxicology/ecotoxicology needed to appreciate these applications. Each chapter summarises fundamental material in a targeted way so that information can be applied to better understand the use of bioanalytical tools in water quality assessment. The book can be used by lecturers teaching academic and professional courses and also by risk assessors, regulators, experts, consultants, researchers and managers working in the water sector. It can also be a reference manual for environmental engineers, analytical chemists and toxicologists. ISBN: 9781789061970 (Paperback) ISBN: 9781789061987 (eBook)

Ivanišová, Eva, Ľubomír Belej, and Adriana Kolesárová, eds. CASEE Online Winter School. Food Environment and Health Risk Assessment in Danube Region (DanubeFEHRA). Book of Abstracts. Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra, Slovakia, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.15414/2021.9788055223322.

Full text
Abstract:
Why have we organized winter school? We believe everyone should be able to understand how important is Food Environment and Health Risk Assessment in Danube Region. The environment plays a crucial role in people’s physical, mental and social well-being. The degradation of the environment, through air pollution, noise, chemicals, poor quality water and loss of natural areas, combined with lifestyle changes, may be contributing to substantial increases of civilisation diseases. The production and consumption of sufficient, affordable and nutritious food, while conserving the natural resources and ecosystems on which food systems depend, is vital. Food systems play a central role in all societies and are fundamental to ensuring sustainable development. Sustainable food systems are critical to resolving issues of food security, poverty alleviation and adequate nutrition, and they play an important role in building resilience in communities responding to a rapidly changing global environment. 13 students from around the world joined our 2- week Winter School Programme in Slovak republic, Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra, Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences. CASEE Online Winter School was multidisciplinary, encompassing chemistry, environment, microbiology, nutrition, quality assurance, sensory analysis, management, food engineering and manufacturing and also about very actual problematic Covid-19 and its impact on agri-food sector. The Winter School gave our participants an idea of how interesting these topics really are. Online lectures were provided by experts in agri-food sector from Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra, professional lecturers from prestige universities all over the world, state authorities, research institutes and SMEs as well as representatives from CASEE universities.
