Abstract:
Kazimierz Twardowski’s contribution to the evolution of logicin PolandTwardowski’s legacy, which has been published so far—and the detailed analysis of it—suf fices to consider him a classic of Polish semiotics. The published results of Twardowski in the field of methodology also deserve high scores. A new light on the contribution of Twardowski to the development of logic in Poland sheds the content of his unpublished legacy, including the content of his lectures on logic and unedited logical monographs. Firstly, Twardowski conducted fruitful research on many methodological problems. The result of this research was—an unknown to a wider audience—a new approach to the theory of induction and an original sketch of the perspectives of the inductive method in metaphysics, the first in our literature such a comprehensive monograph on reasoning and reconstruction of the concept of understanding. Secondly, Twardowski referred in his unpublished lectures and monographs to the important results of the nineteenth-century formal logic, thus giving their students an important impulse for individual research in this field. In this text, I focus my attention on the logical issues raised by Twardowski just in his unpublished texts.

Abstract:
It was noted that during 25 years of scientific and teaching activity N. F. Filatov has made a significant contribution to the development of world Pediatrics. He is the author of over 70 scientific works, including «A short textbook of pediatric diseases» (1893), that was published in 12 editions, and «Clinical lectures» (1900). His monograph «Lectures on acute infectious diseases» (1885) was published in 4 editions, «Semiotics and diagnosis of childhood diseases» (1890) – 9 editions, it istranslated into German, Czech, Italian, Hungarian and French. Many generations of pediatricians have studied on N.F. Filatov’s monographs and manuals. He described the infectious disease named Filatov scarlatinal rubella. Later it was described by the British physician Dukes; one of the presently used names of the disease is Filatov-Dukes disease. In the first edition of «Lectures on infectious diseases» N. F. Filatov described not known until that time infectious mononucleosis, which he called idiopathic inflammation of the cervical lymphatic nodes. The disease is now often called the Filatov’s disease. In 1895 N. F. Filatov, described an important diagnostic sign of measles – the appearance in the catarrhal period of illness of grayish-white lesions on the mucose membrane of lips and cheeks 1–2 days prior to the appearance of rash. As was established later, this sign was first described by A. P. Belsky in 1890, then, independently, by N.F. Filatov, and in 1896 by Koplik. In the literature, this symptom is known as Belsky-Filatov-Koplik spots. N.F. Filatov described the pathogenesis of some forms of oedema syndrome in children, published works on prolonged afebrile forms of the flu. N.F. Filatov was developing a clinical-physiological direction in Pediatrics. He created a large school of native pediatricians. Among his students were famous pediatricians V.I. Molchanov and G.N. Speransky.

Abstract:
Evolution was popularized from 1860 to 1900 in the USA and Britain in a wide variety of media. Here I investigate traditional texts associated with the intellectual elite, including philosophical or scientific monographs, sermons, and published lectures. Evolution was rarely popularized in ways that reflected Darwin's major contribution to biology, his theory of natural selection. This meant that the reading audience more often encountered an alternative to Darwin's naturalistic, non-directional and non-progressive evolutionary perspective. There were at least four different versions of evolution circulating in the period from 1860 to 1900, and only one conformed to Darwin's vision.

Abstract:
This year marks the 100th birth anniversary of Professor Marian Alan Weiss. The following article serves as a reminder of this magnificent man, doctor and scientist and his indisputable multifaceted accomplishments. Prof. Weiss was a brilliant organizer. He proposed and then formed the largest medical rehabilitation centre in Poland, the STOCER Capital Rehabilitation Centre in Konstantin, and established one of the first university departments of rehabilitation in Europe. His medical achievements included Weiss’ spring arthroplasty, a method for stabilising the spine after an injury. He also promoted myoplastic amputation and early intraoperative prosthetic support (so-called rapid prosthesis) as well as early comprehensive rehabilitation, which is widely recognized today. Prof. Weiss was a first-rate scientist and lecturer. He published more than 200 articles in Polish and international journals, a few textbooks and monographs. He delivered many lectures and presentations at domestic and international congresses and symposia. As early as 1959, he lectured at international seminars on prosthetics and rehabilitation of amputees. As an expert of the WHO Regional Bureau, he organized international training workshops on rehabilitation, with English and French as languages of instruction. He was an honorary member of the New York Physical Medicine Society, held an honorary doctorate from Rennes University and an honorary membership of the Swedish Orthopaedic Society, and received the Honorary Medal of Vishnevsky Institute in Moscow. He also was Vice-president of the “Paraplegia” International Medical Society. His unexpected death in 1961 put an end to his further organizational, professional, scientific and educational plans.
