Abstract:
MUSINT is an interactive museological network devoted to the Tuscan archaeological collections which enables the creation of an innovative display itinerary through the collections of Aegean and Cypriot antiquities, so that exhibits originating from different museum institutions can be appreciated. This has led to the creation of a "museum of museums" which responds to the need to offer a display system that can be "visited" by a broad and variegated public. The arrangement of the book itself reflects the true nature of the MUSINT project and its character as a research worksite, enhanced by past experience, and a bridge for the appreciation of new perspectives within a scientific, technological and cultural universe that is open and in continual movement.

Dacome, Lucia. Malleable Anatomies. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198736189.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Malleable Anatomies examines the early stages of the practice of anatomical modelling. It investigates the ‘mania’ for anatomical displays that swept the Italian peninsula in the mid-eighteenth century, and traces the fashioning of anatomical models as important social, cultural, and political as well as medical tools. Anatomical models offered special insights into the inner body. Being coloured, soft, and malleable, they fostered anatomical knowledge in delightful ways. But how did anatomical models inscribe and mediate bodily knowledge? How did they change the way in which anatomical knowledge was created and communicated? And how did they affect the lives of those involved in their production, display, viewing, and handling? Examining the circumstances surrounding the making and early viewing of anatomical displays in Bologna, Naples, and Palermo, Malleable Anatomies addresses these questions by reconstructing how anatomical modelling developed at the intersection of medical knowledge, religious ritual, antiquarian and artistic cultures, and Grand Tour display. While doing so, it investigates the development of anatomical modelling in the context of the diverse visual and material practices that characterized the representation and display of the body. Drawing attention to the artisanal dimension of anatomical practice, and the role of women as both makers and users, it considers how anatomical models lay at the centre of a composite world of social interactions that led to the fashioning of modellers as anatomical celebrities. Moreover, it examines how anatomical displays transformed the proverbially gruesome practice of anatomy into an enthralling experience that engaged audiences’ senses and affects.

Poplack, Shana. Borrowing in the speech community. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190256388.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter reports on the first large-scale community-based study of borrowing as it transpires in the course of regular bilingual interactions. It represents an initial attempt to furnish an empirical basis for going beyond attested loanwords to characterize the borrowing process. Departing from distinctions among lone other-language items of varying frequencies, detailed structural analyses ascertain whether English-origin nonce words incorporated into French display different structural properties from established loanwords. Among the diagnostics examined are gender assignment, plural inflection, verb morphology, word order, and phonetic realization. All lone items, whether nonce or established, display virtually identical linguistic behavior to attested loanwords. Integration is achieved almost immediately at the morphosyntactic level, while phonological integration is variable. This work inaugurated the comparative sociolinguistic method, illustrated throughout this volume, which will be seen to be crucial in the analysis of bilingual behavior, and led to the first corpus-based definition of nonce borrowing.

Full text
Abstract:
The leading earl-modern German states were warfare states, spending their revenues on princely display and their war machines, but few could dispose of sufficient revenue to fund the establishment and education of a military engineering corps. Prussia and Saxony were the main potential powers in the north and Prussia had established a corps in 1729 which distinguished itself under the Dutchman Gerhard Walrawe, but his behaviour led to his cashiering by Frederick the Great. Prussian engineers never quite recovered. Saxon ones were better paid and promoted but the state wasted the resources they needed. Hanover and Bavaria were too small to sustain adequate education facilities. It was more sensible to hire qualified foreigners.

Kelly, Jim. Ireland and Union. Edited by David Duff. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199660896.013.9.

Full text
Abstract:
Irish writers reacted to the Act of Union between Great Britain and Ireland by creating a literature deeply invested in political disputation and sentimental appeal. The works of Irish Romanticism display formal and generic hybridity, as writers responded to the material and cultural changes brought about by Union. Far from solving the national question, the Union initiated a literature interested in fragmentation, decline, and melancholy. This chapter surveys attempts in fiction and poetry to align sentimental models of literature with political advocacy, and considers the effect that Union had on writers concerned with Ireland. The legacy of the 1798 Rebellion, the ongoing struggle for Catholic Emancipation, and economic stagnation all led to a literature that could, and often did, shift quickly from lachrymose nostalgia to Gothic trauma.

Abstract:
Medieval people who had authority acquired it through lineage and success in battle; they symbolized their social positions by display of costume, jewellery, gold and silver plate, weapons, buildings, and funeral monuments. Some of these represented portable wealth that could be used as gifts to create and confirm alliances, and as pledges against loans. Royal power was bestowed at coronations, for which appropriate regalia were needed. Heraldry and coats of arms became increasingly important for those high in the social structure or aspiring to it. Those of lower status might own things made in base metal, pottery, and stone, but whether any of those expressed symbols of resistance to the power of authority is debatable. The need to exercise that authority through the permanency of written documents led to increased use of seals for authentication.
