Abstract:
The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, or the Shakers, are a small progressive communal religious group founded in the mid-eighteenth century by a woman named Ann Lee. This thesis follows the stories told about Ann Lee by the Shakers throughout their history and documents how the changing narratives reflect the changing culture of Shakerism. As a result of being both a progressive and a communal religious society, the Shakers faced the dilemma of maintaining their religious core while maintaining a progressive stance that was consistent with the dominant culture from which they strived to separate themselves. This thesis argues that the Shakers used the static form of the written narrative to balance and maintain the essential nature of Shakerism, threatened by increased interaction with American mainstream society.

Abstract:
Background. As a society, our interaction with the environment is having a negative impact on human health. For example, an increase in car use for short trips, over walking or cycling, has contributed to an increase in obesity, diabetes and poor heart health and also contributes to pollution, which is associated with asthma and other respiratory diseases. In order to change the nature of that interaction, to be more positive and healthy, it is recommended that individuals adopt a range of environmentally friendly behaviours (such as walking for transport and reducing the use of plastics). Effective interventions aimed at increasing such behaviours will need to be evidence based and there is a need for the rapid communication of information from the point of research, into policy and practice. Further, a number of health disciplines, including psychology and public health, share a common mission to promote health and well-being. Therefore, the objective of this project is to take a cross-discipline and collaborative approach to reveal psychological mechanisms driving environmentally friendly behaviour. This objective is further divided into three broad aims, the first of which is to take a cross-discipline and collaborative approach to research. The second aim is to explore and identify the salient beliefs which most strongly predict environmentally friendly behaviour. The third aim is to build an augmented model to explain environmentally friendly behaviour. The thesis builds on the understanding that an interdisciplinary collaborative approach will facilitate the rapid transfer of knowledge to inform behaviour change interventions. Methods. The application of this approach involved two surveys which explored the psycho-social predictors of environmentally friendly behaviour. Following a qualitative pilot study, and in collaboration with an expert panel comprising academics, industry professionals and government representatives, a self-administered, Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) based, mail survey was distributed to a random sample of 3000 residents of Brisbane and Moreton Bay Region (Queensland, Australia). This survey explored specific beliefs including attitudes, norms, perceived control, intention and behaviour, as well as environmental altruism and green identity, in relation to walking for transport and switching off lights when not in use. Following analysis of the mail survey data and based on feedback from participants and key stakeholders, an internet survey was employed (N=451) to explore two additional behaviours, switching off appliances at the wall when not in use, and shopping with reusable bags. This work is presented as a series of interrelated publications which address each of the research aims. Presentation of Findings. Chapter five of this thesis consists of a published paper which addresses the first aim of the research and outlines the collaborative and multidisciplinary approach employed in the mail survey. The paper argued that forging alliances with those who are in a position to immediately utilise the findings of research has the potential to improve the quality and timely communication of research. Illustrating this timely communication, Chapter six comprises a report presented to Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC). This report addresses aim's one and two. The report contains a summary of participation in a range of environmentally friendly behaviours and identifies the beliefs which most strongly predicted walking for transport and switching off lights (from the mail survey). These salient beliefs were then recommended as targets for interventions and included: participants believing that they might save money; that their neighbours also switch off lights; that it would be inconvenient to walk for transport and that their closest friend also walks for transport. Chapter seven also addresses the second aim and presents a published conference paper in which the salient beliefs predicting the four specified behaviours (from both surveys) are identified and potential applications for intervention are discussed. Again, a range of TPB based beliefs, including descriptive normative beliefs, were predictive of environmentally friendly behaviour. This paper was also provided to MBRC, along with recommendations for applying the findings. For example, as descriptive normative beliefs were consistently correlated with environmentally friendly behaviour, local councils could engage in marketing and interventions (workshops, letter box drops, internet promotions) which encourage parents and friends to model, rather than simply encourage, environmentally friendly behaviour. The final two papers, presented in Chapters eight and nine, addresses the third aim of the project. These papers each present two behaviours together to inform a TPB based theoretical model with which to predict environmentally friendly behaviour. A generalised model is presented, which is found to predict the four specific behaviours under investigation. The role of demographics was explored across each of the behaviour specific models. It was found that some behaviour's differ by age, gender, income or education. In particular, adjusted models predicted more of the variance in walking for transport amongst younger participants and females. Adjusted models predicted more variance in switching off lights amongst those with a bachelor degree or higher and predicted more variance in switching off appliances amongst those on a higher income. Adjusted models predicted more variance in shopping with reusable bags for males, people 40 years or older, those on a higher income and those with a bachelor degree or higher. However, model structure and general predictability was relatively consistent overall. The models provide a general theoretical framework from which to better understand the motives and predictors of environmentally friendly behaviour. Conclusion. This research has provided an example of the benefits of a collaborative interdisciplinary approach. It has identified a number of salient beliefs which can be targeted for social marketing campaigns and educational initiatives; and these findings, along with recommendations, have been passed on to a local council to be used as part of their ongoing community engagement programs. Finally, the research has informed a practical model, as well as behaviour specific models, for predicting sustainable living behaviours. Such models can highlight important core constructs from which targeted interventions can be designed. Therefore, this research represents an important step in undertaking collaborative approaches to improving population health through human-environment interactions.

The thesis examines four films by Lee Han—Wandeugi (2011), Thread of Lies (2013), A Melody to Remember (2016) and Innocent Witness (2019)—that highlight disability problems in contemporary South Korea. While exposing the prejudice against and misunderstanding of people with disabilities embedded in society, these motion pictures promote social integration through development of trusted relationships and effective communication within familial structures. The representations of disability indicate that the cinematic images of exclusion can reinforce disabled characters' marginalized identity and promote inclusive efforts among the viewer at the same time. Through textual, cultural, theoretical analysis, it is argued that the films progressively decrease discriminative description of disability and gradually empower isolated individuals, making Innocent Witness an exemplary disability rights film.

Abstract:
One of the core and primary functions of the school is to transmit knowledge from one generation to the next. The theory and practice of schooling (teaching and learning) should be founded on a sound concept of knowledge. A change in epistemology entails a change in approach to schooling. This study investigates how the postmodern idea of knowledge may affect schooling both in theory and practice. The author traces how the concept of knowledge has changed from modern to the postmodern era, in order to find the general features of the recent view of knowledge. The postmodern idea of knowledge is characterised by doubt about objective knowledge, the shift from universal reason to plural reason, criticism of foundationalism and awareness of the peculiar role of language. This study focuses on Richard Rorty's theory to analyse the postmodern idea of knowledge and its educational implication. In order to figure out the problems of postmodern epistemology, the author criticises Rorty's idea of knowledge immanently and transcendentally. Not only self-contradictions but also hidden foundations (or beliefs) in Rorty's idea of knowledge are revealed. This study comes to conclude that although the postmodern idea of knowledge reveals the shortcomings of the modern idea of knowledge, it also has many flaws in achieving a sound concept of knowledge. This study indicates an alternative view of knowledge from a Reformational perspective in order to overcome the shortcomings of postmodern epistemology. The author suggests a new possibility of objective knowledge based on the notion of creational law, and also various kinds of legitimate knowledge based on the multi-dimensional modality of reality. As a final point, this study suggests the notion of stewardship in education. Schooling should open up the multidimensional reality for students to become responsible stewards who care for the world and their fellow human beings.

Abstract:
Abstract We present artificial neural network (ANN) models for predicting flowing bottomhole pressure (FBHP) of unconventional oil wells under gas-lift operations. Well parameters, fluid properties, production/injection data, and bottomhole gauge pressures from 16 shale oil wells in Permian Basin, Texas, are analyzed to determine key parameters affecting FBHP during the gas-lift operation. For the reservoir fluid properties, several PVT models, such as Benedict-Webb-Rubin, Lee, Gonzalez, & Eakin, and Standing, among others, are examined against experimentally tuned fluid properties, i.e., viscosity, formation volume factor, and solution gas-oil ratio, to identify representative fluid (PVT) models for oil and gas properties. Pipe flow models, i.e., Hagedorn & Brown, Grey, Begs & Brill, and Petalas & Aziz, are also examined by comparing calculated FBHP against the bottomhole gauge pressures to identify a representative pipe flow model. Training and test data sets are then generated using the representative PVT and pipe flow models to develop a physics-based ANN model. The physics-based ANN model inputs are hydrocarbon fluid properties, liquid flowrate (qL), gas-liquid-ratio (GLR), water- oil-ratio (WOR), well depth (TVD), wellhead pressure (Pwh), wellhead temperature (Twh), and temperature gradient (dT/dh). A data- based ANN model is also developed based on only TVD, Pwh, qL, GLR, and WOR. Both physics- and data-based ANN models are trained through hyperparameter optimization using genetic algorithm and K-fold validation and then tested against the gauge FBHP. The results reveal that both models perform well with the FBHP prediction from field data with a normalized mean absolute error (NMAE) of around 10%. However, a comparison between results from the physics- and data-based ANN models shows that the physics- based model accuracy is higher at the later phase of the gas-lift operation when the steady state pipe flow is well established. On the other hand, the data-based model performs better for the early phase of gas-lift operation when transient flow behavior is dominant. Developed ANN models and workflows can be applied to optimize gas-lift operations under different fluid and well conditions.

SNCF (Socie´te´ Nationale des Chemins de Fer franc¸ais), PSA (Peugeot Citroe¨n), EDF (Electricite´ de France) and ECL (Ecole Centrale de Lyon) are involved in a common project whose issue is the potential evaluation of numerical simulation in aeroacoustics for transport applications. One of the methods chosen in the project consists in the calculation of the aeroacoustic source term through a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and its implementation into a code based on the Linearized Euler’s Equations for the acoustic propagation (LEE). A new modeling formulation for turbulent chemistry interactions in large eddy simulation (LES) is presented that is based on a unique application of the linear-eddy model (LEM) that includes large scale strain effects. This novel application of the LEM may be used to predict turbulent flame extinction limits due to both small and large scale strain effects. Statistics from this modeling formulation may be used to generate an inexpensive run-time model for LES predictions. This paper presents the LEM modeling formulation and demonstrates the capabilities of the approach for augmentor conditions. A methodology is also presented to formulate a LES subgrid model based on the simulation data.

Abstract:
There is a strong need to investigate aerodynamic noise caused by large and fast rotating wind turbines, especially trailing edge and tip noise. This work constitutes the first part of a project which aims to simulate the broadband tip noise emitted when the wind turbine is in operation. Several aeroacoustics methods are analyzed and their suitability for a typical wind turbine blade is assessed. A stationary wind turbine blade in an incident flow with a large region of separated flow is studied. The surface pressure fluctuations are calculated using compressible Large-Eddy simulation (LES). The aerodynamic noise perceived in the far-field is predicted by simulating the propagation of the pressure perturbations using LES and Linearized Euler equations (LEE) in the near field and Kirchhoff’s integral method in the far-field. It was found that for the present wind turbine blade with a large region of separated flow and thus relatively large fluctuations, LES with a fine enough mesh and a third-order upwind scheme is able to compute the propagation of acoustic waves as accurately as LEE with higher order schemes and separate treatment of acoustic perturbations. The method described in this paper will be used in the future to analyze a full wind turbine blade with the aim of optimizing the tip shape for reduced noise emission.

Dans cette analyse, nous estimons l’effet dynamique d’une hausse du taux d’imposition des hauts revenus sur les recettes fiscales au Québec. Depuis 10 ans, l’imposition des hauts revenus a augmenté considérablement au Québec, avec deux hausses successives en 2013 et 2016. Nous utilisons des microdonnées longitudinales provenant d’un grand échantillon de contribuables. Les effets obtenus par l’estimation suggèrent qu’une taxation accrue des hauts revenus ne permet pas à court terme de récolter davantage de recettes afin de poursuivre des objectifs de redistribution. Les effets à long terme sont plus positifs. Nous discutons également des mécanismes qui mènent à cette réponse dynamique.

Trouver des ressources énergétiques renouvelables pour atteindre les objectifs du gouvernement visant à atteindre zéro émission nette d’ici 2050 est l’un des plus grands défis auxquels nous sommes confrontés, en particulier dans le Nord. Les communautés du Nord sont en grande partie déconnectées du réseau énergétique nord-américain et dépendent plutôt des hydrocarbures importés pour leur chauffage et leur électricité. Une étude antérieure (par exemple Grasby et al., 2011) suggérait que le Yukon et le nord-est de la Colombie-Britannique constituaient des régions à fort potentiel pour les ressources géothermiques. Des travaux supplémentaires montrent le potentiel de l'énergie géothermique pour soutenir les communautés du Nord (Grasby et al., 2012). De nouvelles techniques de géophysique, de télédétection et de surveillance de la température de surface du sol (GST) pour l'évaluation géothermique ont été développées dans le cadre du projet géothermique Garibaldi (Grasby et al., 2021 ; Chen et al. 2023). Cette étude explore la faisabilité de l'utilisation d'images multispectrales de télédétection de Landsat 8 et des séries chronologiques GST du réseau de surveillance GST pour révéler la relation entre le système de failles profondes et le flux de chaleur souterrain en tant qu'outil d'évaluation des ressources géothermiques pour le nord du Canada. GSC et YSG ont déployé un réseau de surveillance de la température à la surface du sol au cours de l'été 2022, et les données de 65 stations ont été récupérées au cours de la saison de terrain 2023. Un traitement préliminaire a été effectué pour détecter les zones de flux de chaleur élevé. Deux ensembles d'images multispectrales Landsat-8 dans la zone de Burwash Landing de différentes saisons ont été collectées et traitées pour l'extraction de caractéristiques à l'aide d'algorithmes ML. Les données GST et les caractéristiques extraites des images Landsat ont été analysées pour déterminer si les anomalies géothermiques sont liées à des caractéristiques géologiques spécifiques, telles que des systèmes de failles profondes. Nous rapportons ici les résultats préliminaires en mettant l'accent sur l'analyse des données sur la TPS.

Grâce à la collecte de données nous permettant de relier les trajectoires éducatives des individus à différentes mesures de compétences, nous étudions les déterminants des choix de filières au Québec et dans le reste du Canada et en particulier, le rôle des compétences cognitives et non-cognitives. Nous évaluons l’impact des études en Sciences, Technologie, Ingénierie, et Mathématiques (STIM) ainsi que l’effet des facteurs cognitifs et non-cognitifs sur un grand nombre de mesures de performance sur le marché du travail. Nos résultats indiquent que les performances individuelles dans le test EIACA (semblable au test PISA) n’ont pratiquement aucun pouvoir prédictif sur la probabilité de compléter un programme scientifique mais jouent un rôle déterminant sur les salaires à 30 ans. La fréquentation d’un programme STIM est principalement expliquée par la compétence académique en mathématiques mesurée par les notes obtenues à l'âge de 18 ans. Le second déterminant le plus important est de loin le facteur non-cognitif mesurant le degré de motivation pendant les études. Toutes choses égales par ailleurs (à compétences égales), les Ontariens ont une probabilité d’obtenir un diplôme STIM plus élevée que les Québécois.

Nous modélisons la distribution conjointe (i) des trajectoires éducatives individuelles, définies par l'allocation du temps (semestres) entre diverses combinaisons d'inscription à l'école avec différentes modalités d'offre de travail et des périodes d'interruption de l'école consacrées soit à l'emploi soit à la production domestique et (ii) des résultats réels d'obtention du diplôme en utilisant deux cohortes de l'enquête longitudinale nationale sur les jeunes que nous suivons de 16 à 28 ans. Nous discutons de l'évolution des effets du revenu familial et des aptitudes, ces dernières étant décomposées en un facteur d'aptitude latente académique (cognitive) et pratique (technique-mécanique) corrélé avec le revenu familial et les variables de contexte. Nous constatons que le différentiel individuel d'aptitude cognitive et technique prévalant à 16 ans augmentait avec le revenu au début des années 80 mais beaucoup moins au début des années 2000. Nous ne trouvons aucune preuve d'une quelconque "inégalité de trajectoire" basée sur le revenu dans l'une ou l'autre des cohortes, après conditionnement sur les capacités. Parmi tous les résultats liés à l'obtention d'un diplôme et à l'inscription, l'obtention d'un diplôme universitaire est le seul pour lequel l'effet du revenu a augmenté entre les années 1980 et le début des années 2000, mais il n'a pas atteint un niveau plus important que l'effet du revenu sur l'obtention d'un diplôme d'études secondaires. Dans les deux cohortes, les capacités cognitives et techniques sont les facteurs dominants mais elles affectent la plupart des dimensions des trajectoires individuelles et tous les résultats d'obtention du diplôme dans des directions opposées. Cependant, le facteur des capacités cognitives a perdu la moitié de son effet sur l'obtention du diplôme universitaire, tandis que l'impact du facteur technique-mécanique a été plus stable d'une cohorte à l'autre.

En 2012, le gouvernement du Québec a introduit le Crédit d’impôt pour la prolongation de carrière (CIPC), une mesure fiscale touchant les travailleurs de 65 ans et plus (60 ans et plus depuis 2019). Le crédit vise à éliminer l’impôt à payer sur une partie du revenu de travail des travailleurs expérimentés afin de les inciter à demeurer ou à retourner sur le marché du travail. Cette mesure a été bonifiée chaque année depuis 2015 de sorte que le coût de la mesure est passé d’un modeste 46 M$ en 2012 à plus de 342 M$ en 2019. En utilisant les microdonnées de panel de l’Étude longitudinale et internationale des adultes (ÉLIA) de 2012 à 2020, les auteurs proposent une série d’approches méthodologiques pour évaluer l’impact du crédit sur les comportements d’offre de travail. Les estimations fondées sur la méthode la plus efficiente d’un point de vue statistique suggèrent que le CIPC a eu un impact significatif sur les revenus d’emploi, en particulier pour les femmes. Toutefois, les effets ne surviennent qu’à partir de la quatrième ou cinquième année suivant de l’implantation du crédit, soit les années de forte bonification du crédit. Les auteurs soulignent qu’au-delà de son efficacité avérée, la question de l’efficience du crédit — soit l’impact réel d’une possible participation accrue au marché du travail sur les revenus imposables, et conséquemment sur les recettes fiscales du gouvernement — reste toutefois à démontrer.

Outre les services de garde d’enfants subventionnés, les prestations parentales constituent un outil stratégique important pour aider les parents à concilier leurs responsabilités professionnelles et parentales. Au Canada, seuls les parents en emploi qui répondent à certains critères d’admissibilité ont droit à des prestations. Or, si la naissance ou l’adoption d’un enfant entraîne de nouvelles dépenses pour l’ensemble des familles, seules certaines familles au Canada sont admissibles à de telles prestations. Au Québec, les prestations parentales sont versées par l’entremise du Régime québécois d’assurance parentale (RQAP), tandis que dans le reste du Canada, elles sont versées par le biais du régime d’assurance-emploi (AE). Alors que l’accessibilité à ce type de prestations a connu une augmentation pendant près de 30 ans (entre 1971 et 1996), le remplacement du Programme d’assurance-chômage (AC) par le régime d’assurance-emploi (AE) en 1997 a eu pour effet de restreindre l’accès des familles aux prestations parentales au Canada. Pendant la pandémie de COVID-19, les critères d’admissibilité aux prestations parentales ont été assouplis temporairement. Puis, le 25 septembre 2022, le gouvernement fédéral a discrètement rétabli les critères d’admissibilité antérieurs à la pandémie. Qu’est-ce que cela signifie pour les familles au Canada?

Ce rapport présente les derniers développements sur la situation des immigrants et des minorités visibles sur les marchés du travail québécois et canadiens. En 2021, les immigrants représentaient 14,6 % de la population du Québec et 23 % de celle du Canada. Au Québec, le taux de chômage chez les immigrants a fortement baissé au fil du temps, mais les immigrants sont toujours plus exposés au chômage et occupent des emplois moins bien rémunérés que les Canadiens de naissance. Quant aux minorités visibles, leur part dans la population était de 16,1 % au Québec (26,5 % au Canada) en 2021. Aussi, près d’un Québécois de moins de 25 ans sur quatre (22,2 %) est issu d’une minorité visible, une réalité avec laquelle le marché du travail devra composer et que les décideurs des politiques publiques doivent prendre en considération. Nos résultats permettent de conclure que l’intégration dans le marché du travail au Québec et au Canada est déterminée davantage par l’appartenance à une minorité visible que par le fait d’être immigrant. Même s’ils sont nés au Canada, les membres d’une minorité visible semblent peiner à se tailler une place sur le marché du travail. Dans un contexte où le Québec et le Canada cherchent à recruter plus de travailleurs à l’étranger pour faire face à la pénurie de main-d’œuvre, la logique voudrait qu’on réalise d’abord le plein potentiel de la population en âge de travailler qui se trouve déjà sur place. Par ailleurs, la situation des jeunes Canadiens de naissance issus des minorités visibles mérite une attention particulière pour parer aux risques d’exclusion socioéconomique de ces jeunes et aux conséquences que cette exclusion pourrait avoir sur la cohésion sociale.

Ce rapport de fichier ouvert présente les résultats de la surveillance sismique globale menée dans le nord-est de la Colombie-Britannique (NE BC) en 2021 et 2022. L'effort de surveillance englobe deux zones primaires d'observation sismique : la zone de surveillance etd'atténuation sismique de Kiskatinaw (KSMMA) et la zone de condition de permis de surveillance du mouvement du sol (GMMPCA), chacune étant caractérisée par des opérations pétrolières et gazières différentes, ainsi que par des densités de population. Un flux de travail de pointe basé surl'apprentissage automatique a été utilisé pour la détection des tremblements de terre et la détermination des phases. Une étape de révision manuelle a été incluse pour garantir la qualité de toutes les détections et localisations de tremblements de terre. Du 1er janvier 2021 au 31 décembre 2022, untotal de 9655 événements sismiques ont été détectés, avec un taux mensuel moyen de 420 événements. Le KSMMA a enregistré 8468 événements au cours de cette période, caractérisés par un regroupement serré, tandis que le GMMPCA a enregistré 899 événements. Des variations dans les taux de sismicité ontété observées par rapport aux rapports précédents, potentiellement influencées par des changements dans les activités industrielles et les capacités de surveillance sismique. L'ampleur de l'exhaustivité pour le KSMMA est passée à 1,01, reflétant les changements dans le réseau de surveillancesismique, tandis que le GMMPCA a affiché une ampleur de l'exhaustivité de 1,45, légèrement supérieure à celle de la période de rapport précédente. Ce rapport souligne la nature dynamique de la sismicité induite dans le nord-est de la Colombie-Britannique, en insistant sur la nécessité d'unesurveillance continue, de mesures d'atténuation adaptatives et d'une collecte robuste de données sismiques pour éclairer la prise de décision et améliorer la préparation aux tremblements de terre.
