Cook, Matthew. "The Narratives of Ann Lee as a Core Component of Shaker Theological Evolution." TopSCHOLAR®, 2007. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/969.

Full text
Abstract:
The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, or the Shakers, are a small progressive communal religious group founded in the mid-eighteenth century by a woman named Ann Lee. This thesis follows the stories told about Ann Lee by the Shakers throughout their history and documents how the changing narratives reflect the changing culture of Shakerism. As a result of being both a progressive and a communal religious society, the Shakers faced the dilemma of maintaining their religious core while maintaining a progressive stance that was consistent with the dominant culture from which they strived to separate themselves. This thesis argues that the Shakers used the static form of the written narrative to balance and maintain the essential nature of Shakerism, threatened by increased interaction with American mainstream society.

Wilson, Lee-Ann Margaret. "A cross-discipline and collaborative approach to identifying the predictors of environmentally friendly and health protective behaviour." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2012. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/63940/1/Lee-Ann_Wilson_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Background. As a society, our interaction with the environment is having a negative impact on human health. For example, an increase in car use for short trips, over walking or cycling, has contributed to an increase in obesity, diabetes and poor heart health and also contributes to pollution, which is associated with asthma and other respiratory diseases. In order to change the nature of that interaction, to be more positive and healthy, it is recommended that individuals adopt a range of environmentally friendly behaviours (such as walking for transport and reducing the use of plastics). Effective interventions aimed at increasing such behaviours will need to be evidence based and there is a need for the rapid communication of information from the point of research, into policy and practice. Further, a number of health disciplines, including psychology and public health, share a common mission to promote health and well-being. Therefore, the objective of this project is to take a cross-discipline and collaborative approach to reveal psychological mechanisms driving environmentally friendly behaviour. This objective is further divided into three broad aims, the first of which is to take a cross-discipline and collaborative approach to research. The second aim is to explore and identify the salient beliefs which most strongly predict environmentally friendly behaviour. The third aim is to build an augmented model to explain environmentally friendly behaviour. The thesis builds on the understanding that an interdisciplinary collaborative approach will facilitate the rapid transfer of knowledge to inform behaviour change interventions. Methods. The application of this approach involved two surveys which explored the psycho-social predictors of environmentally friendly behaviour. Following a qualitative pilot study, and in collaboration with an expert panel comprising academics, industry professionals and government representatives, a self-administered, Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) based, mail survey was distributed to a random sample of 3000 residents of Brisbane and Moreton Bay Region (Queensland, Australia). This survey explored specific beliefs including attitudes, norms, perceived control, intention and behaviour, as well as environmental altruism and green identity, in relation to walking for transport and switching off lights when not in use. Following analysis of the mail survey data and based on feedback from participants and key stakeholders, an internet survey was employed (N=451) to explore two additional behaviours, switching off appliances at the wall when not in use, and shopping with reusable bags. This work is presented as a series of interrelated publications which address each of the research aims. Presentation of Findings. Chapter five of this thesis consists of a published paper which addresses the first aim of the research and outlines the collaborative and multidisciplinary approach employed in the mail survey. The paper argued that forging alliances with those who are in a position to immediately utilise the findings of research has the potential to improve the quality and timely communication of research. Illustrating this timely communication, Chapter six comprises a report presented to Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC). This report addresses aim's one and two. The report contains a summary of participation in a range of environmentally friendly behaviours and identifies the beliefs which most strongly predicted walking for transport and switching off lights (from the mail survey). These salient beliefs were then recommended as targets for interventions and included: participants believing that they might save money; that their neighbours also switch off lights; that it would be inconvenient to walk for transport and that their closest friend also walks for transport. Chapter seven also addresses the second aim and presents a published conference paper in which the salient beliefs predicting the four specified behaviours (from both surveys) are identified and potential applications for intervention are discussed. Again, a range of TPB based beliefs, including descriptive normative beliefs, were predictive of environmentally friendly behaviour. This paper was also provided to MBRC, along with recommendations for applying the findings. For example, as descriptive normative beliefs were consistently correlated with environmentally friendly behaviour, local councils could engage in marketing and interventions (workshops, letter box drops, internet promotions) which encourage parents and friends to model, rather than simply encourage, environmentally friendly behaviour. The final two papers, presented in Chapters eight and nine, addresses the third aim of the project. These papers each present two behaviours together to inform a TPB based theoretical model with which to predict environmentally friendly behaviour. A generalised model is presented, which is found to predict the four specific behaviours under investigation. The role of demographics was explored across each of the behaviour specific models. It was found that some behaviour's differ by age, gender, income or education. In particular, adjusted models predicted more of the variance in walking for transport amongst younger participants and females. Adjusted models predicted more variance in switching off lights amongst those with a bachelor degree or higher and predicted more variance in switching off appliances amongst those on a higher income. Adjusted models predicted more variance in shopping with reusable bags for males, people 40 years or older, those on a higher income and those with a bachelor degree or higher. However, model structure and general predictability was relatively consistent overall. The models provide a general theoretical framework from which to better understand the motives and predictors of environmentally friendly behaviour. Conclusion. This research has provided an example of the benefits of a collaborative interdisciplinary approach. It has identified a number of salient beliefs which can be targeted for social marketing campaigns and educational initiatives; and these findings, along with recommendations, have been passed on to a local council to be used as part of their ongoing community engagement programs. Finally, the research has informed a practical model, as well as behaviour specific models, for predicting sustainable living behaviours. Such models can highlight important core constructs from which targeted interventions can be designed. Therefore, this research represents an important step in undertaking collaborative approaches to improving population health through human-environment interactions.

Han, Dasom. "Disability in Lee Han's Social Integration Films." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2021. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/9245.

Abstract:
The thesis examines four films by Lee Han—Wandeugi (2011), Thread of Lies (2013), A Melody to Remember (2016) and Innocent Witness (2019)—that highlight disability problems in contemporary South Korea. While exposing the prejudice against and misunderstanding of people with disabilities embedded in society, these motion pictures promote social integration through development of trusted relationships and effective communication within familial structures. The representations of disability indicate that the cinematic images of exclusion can reinforce disabled characters' marginalized identity and promote inclusive efforts among the viewer at the same time. Through textual, cultural, theoretical analysis, it is argued that the films progressively decrease discriminative description of disability and gradually empower isolated individuals, making Innocent Witness an exemplary disability rights film.

Lee, Hyun-Min. "Postmodern epistemology and schooling / Hyun-Min Lee." Thesis, North-West University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1137.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the core and primary functions of the school is to transmit knowledge from one generation to the next. The theory and practice of schooling (teaching and learning) should be founded on a sound concept of knowledge. A change in epistemology entails a change in approach to schooling. This study investigates how the postmodern idea of knowledge may affect schooling both in theory and practice. The author traces how the concept of knowledge has changed from modern to the postmodern era, in order to find the general features of the recent view of knowledge. The postmodern idea of knowledge is characterised by doubt about objective knowledge, the shift from universal reason to plural reason, criticism of foundationalism and awareness of the peculiar role of language. This study focuses on Richard Rorty's theory to analyse the postmodern idea of knowledge and its educational implication. In order to figure out the problems of postmodern epistemology, the author criticises Rorty's idea of knowledge immanently and transcendentally. Not only self-contradictions but also hidden foundations (or beliefs) in Rorty's idea of knowledge are revealed. This study comes to conclude that although the postmodern idea of knowledge reveals the shortcomings of the modern idea of knowledge, it also has many flaws in achieving a sound concept of knowledge. This study indicates an alternative view of knowledge from a Reformational perspective in order to overcome the shortcomings of postmodern epistemology. The author suggests a new possibility of objective knowledge based on the notion of creational law, and also various kinds of legitimate knowledge based on the multi-dimensional modality of reality. As a final point, this study suggests the notion of stewardship in education. Schooling should open up the multidimensional reality for students to become responsible stewards who care for the world and their fellow human beings.

Qualls, Barbara. "The Poetry of Li-Young Lee: Identity, Androgyny & Feminism." TopSCHOLAR®, 1993. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/2737.

Full text
Abstract:
In my investigation of Li-Young Lee's poetry, my concerns were two-fold: first, to find evidence of an androgynous quality or ideal; secondly, to demonstrate that ideal as authentically feminist. In the introduction, I investigate the feminist debate about the traditional definition and concept of androgyny, demonstrating the difference between the patriarchal traditional androgyny and the androgynous elements in Lee's poetry. In Chapter Two, the rose as image and as symbol in Lee's poetry is examined and found to be strikingly androgynous as a symbol. As an image, however, it is more often than not used as a vehicle to describe the destructive nature of social tyrannies such as the patriarchal symbolic order. In Chapter Three, Lee's heavy implications of an existing "other" is examined. This examination is particularly pertinent when considering the feminist debate, since one of the major problems with the idea of androgyny is that it often necessitates a binary thought system in which the male is usually the "one" and the female is usually the "other." In Lea's poetry, I found no significant evidence of that kind of phallocentricism; rather, I found substantial evidence that Lee's poetry demonstrates the destructiveness of insisting on any being's otherness. Lee's search for identity, and for the meaning of personal identity, involves the acceptance of the mutability of identity. In conclusion, although I don't find androgyny to be authentically feminist, I find Lee's poetry--and its particular use of an androgynous ideal--to be authentically feminist.

Abstract:
This thesis is about studio habits. Specifically, it considers what happens in practice in the artist's studio and ways in which creative acts have been visualised and disseminated. The chapters of this thesis are organised around views of the studios of four twentieth century painters: Francis Bacon (1908-1994), Lee Krasner (1909-1984), Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) and Agnes Martin (1913-2005). Each of these artists' studio habits has been fundamental to their respective mythologies and the studios they occupied in their lifetimes have inflected discussion of their work. Drawing on critical theories of sexuality, gender and space, this thesis argues that the idea of the artist as a master continues to dominate as an explanation of art-making but that this characterisation is called into question by these four artist's specific practices in the studio. Close readings of the studio habits in these case studies, considered here as a situated negotiation between artist and studio, challenges the idea of mastery that studio-view exhibits and images tend to promote. Notions of mastery are inclined to construct practice as a paradigm between an active artist and passive studio materials and these, in turn, are apt to be read in terms of masculinity and femininity, respectively. Thus, the role of studio artist has tended to privilege a male lead. Therefore, analysing particular performances of masculinity by these artists provides a means to contest reading studio-view images as statements of mastery and the damaging and inequitable connotations this designation implies. Furthermore, this thesis argues that the recent trend to preserve studio material, or to otherwise encompass traces of practice in exhibits, films and photographs, may be correlated with theoretical shifts which took place in latter half of the twentieth century as a response to philosophical losses entailed in the critique of authority and objecthood and the rise of performance and conceptual art practices.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In South Africa there are various gender and health issues. These issues influence and challenge South African faith communities in their daily existence. This is further justified and enhanced by unethical Biblical interpretation. This study proposes that faith communities in present-day South Africa, where faith communities‘ social wellbeing is endangered, could be responsible receivers of the Bible. This may happen through a multidimensional reading of the letter of James towards an ethos of historical reading and accountability. A multidimensional reading of the letter of James proposes that the text, social and moral world of the writer and the first historical receivers, the possible rhetorical effect of the letter, the ideological perspectives that can be seen in the letter as well as the context, as well as the history of reception of this letter must be taken into account when the possible rhetorical effect for present-day receivers is investigated. An ethos of historical reading and accountability asks believers to respect the historical embeddedness of the text, to read the text in ways which do justice to the nature of the text and to account for the possible ethical consequences of their reading of a text. A multidimensional reading of the letter of James has the transformational potential to make the above mentioned a reality. A multidimensional reading of the letter of James furthermore suggests with regards to gender and health issues that present-day receivers of the Bible should become communities of character where the Bible is read in life-giving ways to make ethical biblical interpretation a reality. Thus South African faith communities may become agents of hope in present-day South Africa. Chapter one functions as the introduction to this study. In chapter two the letter of James is read with regards to the textual and literary aspects of the letter. In chapter three the social and moral world of the letter of James is investigated. In chapter four the pragmatic aspects (theological and rhetorical aspects) of the letter of James is focused on. Chapter five consists of a conclusion and summary of this study where gender and health issues, ethical biblical interpretation and the letter of James are brought together.

"Manipulation and subversion in the Gothic fairy tales of Tanith Lee." Thesis, Kingston University, 2017. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/41038/.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the great diversity of Tanith Lee's work - from science fiction short stories to epic historical novels - certain underlying themes and references consistently appear. This thesis examines Lee's applications of such themes and subtexts, arguing that her work is primarily Gothic regardless of which other genre coventions she uses. By offering a detailed assessment of her fairy tale retellings, this study demonstrates the prevalence of the themes, images and effects that have come to define the Gothic. Lee has developed several subversive narrative strategies that enable her to explore the relations between fairy tales and the Gothic, so the thesis focuses on the cultural significance of each genre's characteristic features in order to show how Lee manipulates conventions, and, in so doing, either reinforces or subverts societal norms. Lee's adaptations are assessed alongside traditional fairy tale variations and compared with a number of key Gothic texts, and the cultural and historical influence of both genres is discussed. Each chapter also briefly reviews significant developments in Gothic and fairy tale scholarship over the last few decades, which allows a more complex and nuanced understanding of the relationship between the two genres, as well as providing a context for the analysis which follows. With few exceptions scholars have ignored this author, preferring instead less genre-driven fairy tale retellings. This limited inquiry has resulted in a deficit of criticism on Tanith Lee, and the exact nature of the relationship between the fairy tale and the Gothic is still not well articulated. This thesis attempts to address that omission by examining the ways in which tale types and genre motifs are reworked in Lee's fiction, and by engaging with an under-explored intersection of folklore and popular culture.

Abstract:
This dissertation brings to the fore two autobiographical works by Native women authors who first gained recognition in the 1970s: Bobbi Lee Indian Rebel (1975), by Native-Canadian Lee Maracle and The Turquoise Ledge: a Memoir (2010), by Native-American Leslie Marmon Silko. These womens undeniable importance to the Native American/Canadian Renaissance is clear, and each of these authors decided to contribute to Native literature using different strategies: while Maracle started her career with Bobbi Lee Indian Rebel, an autobiographical work, Silko waited over thirty years to publish her The Turquoise Ledge. The problematization of seeing either works strictly through Western or strictly through Native perspectives is also addressed here, along with the apparently inevitable political tone present in both narratives. Despite the fact that the two selected works have been written over three decades apart, questions such as: Can these works be considered literature?, Do they have as main purpose to highlight the authors personal accomplishments? or How do they work to empower the Native people? may never be answered, but they did incite the writing of this dissertation and guided our analysis

To enhance the power conversion efficiency in organic solar cells, charge recombination loss needs to be minimized. First, we perform transient absorption spectroscopy to study the charge recombination dynamics of thin film bulk heterojunction of the archetype organic solar cell molecules, copper phthalocyanine (CuPC) and 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic bis-benzimidazole (PTCBI). We report the formation of triplet excitons on PTCBI molecules, which may be an important source of recombination loss in CuPC/PTCBI photovoltaic cells. Second, spin-forbidden transition can be employed to reduce the recombination loss in organic solar cells. We show with a simulation that the spin-disallowed recombination process increases the charge collection efficiency. Also, we present an experimental result that may imply the spin-dependent open-circuit voltage in organic bilayer photovoltaic devices.

Lee, Kukzin. "Matthew's community and the Gentile mission / by Kukzin Lee." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/5026.

Full text
Abstract:
Matthew contains seemingly contradictory passages with regard to the Gentiles and the Gentile mission. On the one hand, it seems that the Gentiles are disparaged and excluded from the missionary activities of Jesus' disciples. On the other hand, some Matthean passages imply the Matthean community's open attitude toward the Gentiles. Scholars have stressed one part of evidence over the other and come to the conclusion that either Matthew's community was extra muros or intra muros, respectively. This thesis is to find the social location of Matthew's community by examining their attitude toward the Gentile mission. Chapter one is the introduction of the thesis. It explains its background and problem and discusses the methodologies to apply in our study. While Stanton and Foster are in the extra muros position, Sim, Saldarini and Overman are in the intra muros position. This thesis uses critical methodologies like redaction criticism, social-science criticism, and mainly literary criticism. Chapter two examines the Ultimate Commission (28:18-20) and if it could function as an important key with which to interpret the whole Gospel. All the themes of the Ultimate Commission (i.e. Jesus' authority, discipleship, Jesus' teaching, baptism, and Immanuel) can be found everywhere in the body of the gospel. Readers of Matthew would be prepared, while reading the body of the gospel, for all the themes of the Ultimate Commission. They won't be surprised at the risen Lord's final words. Matthew as a literary work is heading to the final climax in the Ultimate Commission, which functions as the key for interpreting complicated details in the body. Then our study of the Matthean community's attitude toward the Gentiles and the Gentile mission should be scrutinized with the Ultimate Commission as the final climax in mind. Chapter three examines positive evidence with regard to the Matthean community's open attitude toward the Gentile mission. First, the beginning part of Matthew contains various signals. to point toward the Gentile mission. Jesus' genealogy describes Jesus as the son of Abraham, the father of all nations and extraordinarily contains four Gentile women. Matthew's nativity story includes the visit of Gentile magi and Jesus' flight into Egypt, which views physical Israel as spiritual Egypt and vice versa. Matthew also includes Capernaum and other Gentile cities as Jesus' working area, which shows that Jesus is not only for the Jews, but also for the Gentiles. Jesus' ministry includes a son of a Roman centurion, two demoniacs of Gadara, a Canaanite woman's daughter, and Gentile multitudes. When they are viewed from the Matthean theme of the eschatological realization, they should not be regarded as exceptional cases, but as a demonstration that the kingdom of heaven has arrived or at least dawned to the Gentiles as well as to the Jews. Matthew also contains Jesus' expectation of world-wide proclamation of the Gospel before the end and the Gentile centurion's confession at Jesus' crucifixion. Gentiles are also cited positively in Matthew, when compared with the Jews who are viewed negatively. The Matthean community's acceptance of their mission as the salt and light before the world also implies that Matthew's community embraced the world in their mission. Chapter four scrutinizes the seemingly negative expression of the Gentiles in Matthew. It suggests understanding Jesus' command in the proclamation discourse (10:5-6) as anti-Jewish, rather than pro-Jewish. Jesus is sending his disciples as preachers, just as the ancient invading country sent their preachers to the enemy country they were about to invade. They are to announce the imminent invasion of the kingdom of heaven (the kingdom of heaven is near) and the conditions of surrender (repentance), In this point of view, Israelites are not the ones who have the favours of God, but the enemies of God. Jesus' command not to go to the Gentiles and the Samaritans, but to Israelites should not be viewed as if the Israelites are privileged. In the Proclamation Discourse, they are viewed as more gentile than the Gentiles, as Jesus' admonition to shake off the dust from feet. In line with the Ultimate Commission, the Proclamation Discourse does not exclude the Gentiles from the Matthean community's propaganda. Jesus' apothegm not to give dogs what is holy should not be understood as a veiled prohibition of the Gentile mission. While it is not impossible to view it that way, it is not convincing, just as all the allegorical interpretations are. Also, Matthew's disparaging of the Gentiles in his conventional use of the term does not imply the Matthean community's negative attitude toward the Gentiles, just as we can find similar usage in Paul. Also, Gentile persecution of the community cannot be the reason for their abandonment of the Gentiles, because the persecution was universal. Chapter five examines whether Matthew's community abandoned the Jews in the missionary activity. The phrase Πάντα τα έθνη in the Ultimate Commission should be translated as "all nations," including not just the Gentiles, but also the Jews. Some argue that the Jewish persecution of Matthew's community could have led them to turn away from the Jews. However, it is not likely, because the persecution was universal and the persecution itself would not have made them lose their heart or zeal for their fellow Jews. Also, some argue that the theme of Jewish rejection of Jesus in Matthew reveals the Matthean community's negative attitude toward the Jews. However, the rejection of Jesus was universal, not only by the Jews, but also by the Gentiles. Also, we have much positive evidence that Jesus came for his people Israel. Finally, chapter six examines whether Matthew's community accepted the Gentiles as far as they complied with the requirements of the law. As far as the Jewish boundary markers like the Sabbath, the purity and dietary laws, and circumcision, are concerned, it is not likely. Matthew shows a most lenient form of law-observance. Jesus' words of perpetual validity of the law are to be understood as hyperbole to stress the authority of the law in the community. However, the law as Matthew's community sees it is different from the law as their opponents see it. It is the law as Jesus who has authority over heaven and earth interprets it. In sum and conclusion, it is more plausible to view Matthew's community as extra muros as they are significantly different from their opponents. They were open to the Gentiles and did not require the converts to adhere to Jewish boundary markers.

Abstract:
We calculate to next-to-leading order accuracy the high-energy elastic scattering cross section for an electron off of a classical point source. We use the MS renormalization scheme to tame the ultraviolet divergences while the infrared singularities are dealt with using the well known Kinoshita-Lee-Nauenberg theorem. We show for the first time how to correctly apply the Kinoshita-Lee-Nauenberg theorem diagrammatically in a next-to-leading order scattering process. We improve on previous works by including all initial and final state soft radiative processes, including absorption and an infinite sum of partially disconnected amplitudes. Crucially, we exploit the Monotone Convergence Theorem to prove that our delicate rearrangement of this formally divergent series is uniquely correct. This rearrangement yields a factorization of the infinite contribution from the initial state soft photons that then cancels in the physically observable cross section. Since we use the MS renormalization scheme, our result is valid up to arbitrarily large momentum transfers between the source and the scattered electron as long as α log(1/δ) << 1 and α log(1/δ) log(Δ/E) << 1, where Δ and δ are the experimental energy and angular resolutions, respectively, and E is the energy of the scattered electron. Our work aims at computing the NLO corrections to the energy loss of a high energetic parton propagating in a quark-gluon plasma.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the Lee Hsien Loong Economic Committee Report and the circumstances that led to its commissioning. It also outlines the evidence and the central argument that the Lee Hsien Loong Report has succeeded in facilitating a reorientation in International Investment involving an emphasis on the regional market and the use of Singapore as a Regional Operation Headquarter (RHQ). It also outlines that Singapore has entered a new phase in its export oriented industrial strategy. This article outlines the move by Singapore in 1979 to upgrade its position in the New International Division of Labour (NIDL). Singapore was out to test the limits of its capacity to upgrade from a low wage industrialization strategy to that of a high wage value added technologically oriented industrial programme within the logic of the NIDL. Singapore was attempting to resolve the problem of threats of tariff barriers posed by the United States and that of the European Community, to Singapore’s First Export Oriented Industrialization Programme. It was also an attempt to scale down the number of guest labour in Singapore, increasing productivity and phasing out labour intensive industries. The introduction of the "Corrective Wage Policy" was a high Singapore to phase out labour intensive industries. The introduction of the "Corrective Wage Policy" in combination with the substantial increase in Central Provident Fund contributions increased the cost of doing business in Singapore. This caused many international based capital, especially the Japanese, to rethink their industrial investments in Singapore. Many Japanese groups relocated their labour intensive industries to Hong Kong. The mis-timed Second Industrial Revolution in Singapore, in a period of the downturn of the world economy, compounded the problem of the severe recession in Singapore in 1985. The Singapore government called for immediate remedial strategies and actions to identify the causes of the downturn of the economy. This resulted in the commissioning of the Lee Hsien Loong Report which identified the defects in the Singapore economy in 1985. The report recommended immediate intervention to rectify the various loss of competitive advantages in Singapore, vis-a-vis its world trading partners and competitors. In the conclusion, this thesis analyses some of the future directions of the Singapore economy into the 1990’s. The major contribution by the Lee Hsien Loong Report was its success in achieving the aim of facilitating a reorientation by international investors to use Singapore as a major regional manufacturing and service centre. Singapore today has entered a new phase of its export oriented industrial strategy.

Canani, M. "VERNON LEE AND THE ITALIAN RENAISSANCE. PLASTICITY, GENDER, GENRE." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/264137.

Full text
Abstract:
Vernon Lee scholars have often studied her writings on the Italian Renaissance in connection with Walter Pater’s. Whilst acknowledging the evident influence of Walter Pater, such a critical perspective risks overlooking Lee’s own contribution to the Victorian creation of the “Renaissance myth” – which, in her case, was to outlive its fin-de-siècle frenzy. Moving from the recent developments in Lee scholarship, this study investigates the presence and the function of the Italian Renaissance in Lee’s writings with specific focus on issues of gender and genre. From this perspective, Lee’s relationship with characters, places, villas, and masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance works as a catalyst for the construction of cultural memory, mediated through hybrid narrative forms. Chapter I explores the phenomenology of the Italian Renaissance as a nineteenth-century myth. In particular, it takes into consideration the works of Jules Michelet and Matthew Arnold, and it highlights the influence that Jacob Burckhardt and John Ruskin had on Victorian culture in spite of their diverging opinions. After grounding Lee’s work in the fin-de-siècle tradition of Walter Pater and John Addington Symonds, chapter II investigates Lee’s two collections of Renaissance essays – Euphorion and Renaissance Fancies and Studies – from an intertextual perspective which unveils the gender specificity of Lee’s writings, but also the construction of gender that these essays deploy at a textual level. Chapter III explores Lee’s fascination with Italian landscapes, which she portrays as spaces of culture. The plasticity of landscape and its meanings – which can be sensed in Lee’s prose, but also in Edith Wharton’s and D. H. Lawrence’s – enables Lee to bounce back and forth in time, moving from contemporary Italy to the imagined landscapes of the Renaissance. This textual strategy is made possible by Lee’s theorization of the “genius loci,” which also provides her with a starting point for endorsing cultural politics steered by democratic sympathies. Finally, chapter IV focuses on Lee’s fluid idea of literary genres. Indeed, the Renaissance is a “trans-genre” topos that Lee repeatedly explores in her essays as well as in her travelogues, supernatural tales, and a number of unpublished writings dating from the first two decades of the twentieth century, long after the end of the fin-de-siècle Renaissance frenzy.

Full text
Abstract:
Thermal annealing 4H-SiC(0001) substrates to produce epitaxial graphene on Si-terminated SiC was performed using five different procedures, i.e. direct and indirect current heating at different based pressures and a temperature of about 1300 . The aim is to study the effects of graphene growth under different conditions and also to produce large homogeneous graphene. To investigate the prepared samples, two surface analytical techniques, i.e. low energy electron microscopy (LEEM) and photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) have been used. LEEM was first used to observe the surface morphologies of the prepared samples. In combination with LEEM instrument, low energy electron diffraction (LEED) was used to verify the existence of graphene on SiC substrate. The number of graphene layer was determined by collecting electron reflectivity at different electron energies. The number of dips observed in the electron reflectivity curve corresponds to the number of graphene layer. The experimental results obtained from LEEM and LEED have demonstrated that a film consisting of fairly large domains of 1 and 2 monolayer (ML) graphene was obtained by direct current heating of SiC under high vacuum (HV) condition with the based pressure of 10-6 Torr. A domain size in the range of up to about 5 to 10 μm have been observed. Meanwhile another graphene film prepared by the same method and the same temperature but under ultra high vacuum (UHV) condition with the based pressure of 10-10 Torr has much smaller domain size of 1 ML graphene compared to that grown under HV condition. We therefore suggested that the based pressure during the graphene growth has a strong influence on the morphology of graphene. This is because the Si evaporation rate is suppressed when heated in a high pressure environment, which normally leads to the improvement of the surface quality. The suppression of the Si evaporation rate has also been verified by a result obtained from the other sample directly heated under much higher based pressure, i.e. in an argon (Ar) environment of 1 atm. In addition to LEEM and LEED, the existence of graphene on SiC substrate has also been verified by the PES measurement. The C1s spectrum of graphene sample grown on SiC(0001) substrate showed three components, i.e. bulk SiC, graphene (G) and the buffer layer (B) located at 283.7 eV, 284.5 eV and 285.1 eV, respectively. The intensity ratios of the three components in the C1s spectrum were also used to estimate the number of graphene layer. The estimated number of graphene layer corresponds to the result obtained from LEEM.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Despite recorded mountain wave related aircraft accidents in South Africa, very little literature exists on South African mountain waves. This study discusses the results of a mountain wave study in the Hex River Mountains in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The aim of this study was to measure mountain wave turbulence on the lee side of the mountains by conducting weather balloon soundings on the upwind and lee sides of the mountains. These soundings were performed over four days in the winter and spring, with each field day representing different synoptic scale weather conditions. Lee wave rotors were detected from several of the lee wave soundings. Significant values of horizontal vorticity around a north-south axis (y-component horizontal vorticity) were detected. The instrumentation was highly sensitive and able to measure even weak up and downdraft velocities associated with the rotors. Strong downdrafts were measured some mountain waves, but no strong downdrafts were detected near rotors which occurred below the mountain waves. The two dimensional positions of balloons were only available after a considerable amount of reanalysis. If this data can be made available onsite shortly after soundings, it can be used to decide where to move launch sites to, in order to obtain optimal results.
Beduidende waardes van horisontale vortisiteit rondom ‘n noord-suid as (y-komponent horisontale vortisiteit) is gemeet.

Abstract:
The collaboration between pianist Julian Lee and singer Kerrie Biddell exemplifies the highest qualities of song interpretation in a jazz setting. Through the transcription and analysis of their work I hope to inspire and inform musicians of the possibilities that can emerge when interpreting songs. As is always the case in the jazz idiom, slavish mimicry is ideally only a stepping-stone to a deeper and more personal interpretation of songs. Noted jazz trumpeter and educator Clark Terry stated that the three stages of learning were imitation, internalization and innovation. While the third stage may seem a lofty ideal for most, it is certainly true that as accompanists and singers there are many ways, through analysis and practice, to hone our skills. Understanding Julian Lees’ contribution to the jazz piano literature through his vocal accompaniment is important for all musicians in their collaboration with singers. This aspect of piano playing in general has been neglected in analytical literature. Lee’s work with Biddell is particularly interesting in the way he weaves his classical influences and arranging expertise to create spontaneous orchestral accompaniments. The career experience and exceptional talent of both of these artists combined in the later stage of their careers to produce art of sublime maturity. This work seeks to exploit their knowledge to the benefit of all musicians.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis has focussed on analysing the influence of a temperature inversion in the upstream profile of flow over ridges. Under northerly conditions, a temperature inversion is commonly observed in the Falkland islands radiosonde launches and severe turbulence is usually coupled with it. The turbulence is presumed to be linked to gravity wave activity and is associated with high temporal and spatial variability in wind speed and direction. Recirculation zones are commonly found under the crest of the waves and their three dimensional structure pose a significant hazard to air traffic. The data obtained from a field campaign aimed at observing the flow field downwind of a mountain ridge in the vicinity of Mt. Pleasant airport in the Falkland islands is analysed. From the data analysis, a correlation between the temperature inversion and the difference in temperature between the sea surface and air is established. The seasonal distribution of these phenomena is also explained. Due to logistic constraints, there were no radiosonde launches performed upstream during the campaign. To obviate that problem, a one-dimensional boundary layer model with a 1.5-order closure scheme, radiation and cloud parameterisations was developed. The model was then used to simulate the upwind characteristics of some particular case studies during which strong downwind flow was observed. The influence of temperature inversions on the dynamics of trapped lee-waves was simulated through a series of two--dimensional simulations of flow over idealised ridges. The analysis focussed on the effects of topography composed by two ridges and on the effects of an inversion below the ridge summit. These simulations show that the effects of the second ridge can significantly alter the downstream flow and that a temperature inversion below the summit can also induce strong downwind phenomena. A two-dimensional simulation using the one-dimensional vertical profile from the boundary layer model was performed. The results were in reasonable agreement with the observed data for that day.

Abstract:
Thomas Lee Dvorak (b. 1941) uniquely blended his experience as a music educator with his long career as a collegiate conductor. In his ten-year career as a public school instrumental music educator, Dvorak taught bands at the elementary, middle school or junior high, and high school levels. During this time, he encountered beginning instrumental music instructional methods that allowed his beginning band students to advance at a rapid pace. Dvorak parlayed his school band teaching experience with his growing reputation in band music education into an appointment to the music education faculty at the University of Michigan. At Michigan, Dvorak combined his experience and duties in music education with a conducting position when he was assigned to conduct the University of Michigan Youth Band/Wind Ensemble in 1975. After being named its Director of Bands in 1979, Dvorak created a similar symbiotic role for himself at the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee (UWM) when he founded the Greater Milwaukee Youth Wind Ensemble in 1982. Throughout his twenty-seven year tenure as Director of Bands at UWM, Dvorak also combined education and conducting through the mentorship of graduate conducting students, his sponsorship of new and original music for young/developing bands, and his outreach work with Milwaukee-area school band programs. Dvorak also enjoyed a reputation as an insightful interpreter of wind band music, a leader of national professional organizations, authority on wind band repertoire, and as a frequently invited guest conductor of school, collegiate, and professional ensembles Thomas Dvorak retired from UWM in May 2007 and was named Professor Emeritus of Music.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the cross-cultural ecotheology of contemporary American poet Li-Young Lee by looking at the intersection of the human, the natural, and the sacred in his poetry. Close readings of Lee's poetic encounters with roses, persimmons, trees, wind, and light through the lens of Christianity and Daoism illustrate the way Lee is able to merge the Eastern concepts of interconnection and mutual harmony with Western ideas of sacredness and divinity. This discussion places Lee in direct conversation with modern and contemporary ecopoets who use the creative energy of language to express our moral and ethical responsibility to the world around us. Lee's poetry explores an innately sacred and transcendent relationship with the natural world that suggests that our understanding of our human identity is intricately tied to our respect and reverence for our natural environment.

Abstract:
American artist Lee Bontecou’s oeuvre is often described as difficult to categorize or “mysterious.” Her early work—a series of metal and canvas reliefs made between 1959 and 1965—is linked to a range of stylistic associations including such radically divergent movements as assemblage, minimalism and abstract expressionism. Alternately, contemporary art historian Mona Hadler cites a series of iconographic connections between Bontecou’s reliefs and the popular culture and politics of the late 1950’s and early ‘60s. Using historian Reinhardt Koselleck’s theorization of historical time where history is constituted by an amalgamation of “temporal layers” based on particular historical perspectives, this thesis will explore the varied stylistic associations of Bontecou’s early reliefs by investigating their artistic as well as social and political contexts. In doing so this thesis will demonstrate that these so-called “mysterious” forms were created and exhibited in relation to a several different historical perspectives or “temporal layers.”

Abstract:

Perfect codes and minimal distance of a code have great importance in the study of theoryof codes. The perfect codes are classified generally and in particular for the Lee metric. However, there are very few perfect codes in the Lee metric. The Lee metric hasnice properties because of its definition over the ring of integers residue modulo q. It isconjectured that there are no perfect codes in this metric for q > 3, where q is a primenumber. The minimal distance comes into play when it comes to detection and correction oferror patterns in a code. A few bounds on the number of codewords and minimal distanceof a code are discussed. Some examples for the codes are constructed and their minimaldistance is calculated. The bounds are illustrated with the help of the results obtained.

Chi, Chia-Lin. "Lee Teng-Hui’s political cross-straits policy and mainland china’s reaction." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/28534.

Full text
Abstract:
By the end of the twentieth century, there were many secessionist groups, but, the move towards Taiwanese secessionism has arguably been the most significant of these. It triggered the 1996 Taiwan Strait Crisis, which resulted in a historical military confrontation between Mainland China and the US. As will be shown, from 1988 to 2000, Lee Teng-hui, as president of Taiwan, manipulated the political Cross-Straits relationship to promote what was ultimately a secessionist policy. This caused Mainland China to react strongly and triggered sharp tension between Taiwan and Mainland China. This thesis considers what motivated Lee Teng-hui to implement a secessionist Cross-Straits policy and why he supported unification while adopting a substantive secessionist policy. It looks at how he was able to instigate Taiwanese hostility towards Mainlanders, to transform the hostility into a sense of Taiwanese national identity and ultimately into Taiwanese secessionist ideology. A historical approach was used in exploring the origins of secessionism, and descriptive and analytical methods to review systematically and comprehensively political developments in the ROC and its civil war, and to study Lee Teng-hui’s life; the national identity of Taiwan and Mainland China; the implementation of Lee Teng-hui’s political Cross-Straits policy; and the reaction of Mainland China. The study showed that the main cause of Taiwanese secessionism was ethnic conflict between Taiwanese and Mainlanders. It originated from the 228 Incident of 1947, in which Mainlander-led troops slaughtered many Taiwanese. Soon after, the Mainlander-led government fled to Taiwan from Mainland China, and many Taiwanese (including Mainlanders) were killed during the State of Emergency in the 1950s and 1960s. Since the Mainlander-led government fled to Taiwan in its original central government form, the Mainlander élite occupied key positions in the government during the 1950s and 1960s. It resulted in unfair power-sharing for Taiwanese, and caused the Taiwanese élite to believe that they had to establish their own government (nation). Lee Teng-hui had participated in the CCP and had been under political surveillance by the Mainlander-led government for over twenty years. He weathered these political difficulties, but by reasonable inference, there was a close relationship between the political oppression by the Mainlander-led government and his secessionist political Cross-Straits policy. Because Taiwanese residents were indoctrinated by Chiang Ching-kuo and his father, Chiang Kai-shek’s administration for about 40 years, Chinese ideology was dominant and Lee Teng-hui initially paid lip-service to Cross-Strait unification whilst working towards secessionism as reflected in the Chingdao-Lake Incident (1994); the private dialogue between Lee Teng-hui and Shiba Ryotaro (1994); the address at Cornell University (1995); and his two-state theory (1999). However, due to strong pressure from Mainland China, he did not reach his secessionist goal during his presidential term (1988-2000). In conclusion, this thesis shows that Taiwan Island’s geopolitical importance is at the heart of the US’ support for Taiwan’s secession from the Mainland. Therefore, Lee’s secessionist Cross-Strait policy aside, US national interests lie in containing Mainland China and it has, therefore, always played an important role in the secessionist issue and always will. From the perspective of Mainland China, either in terms of nationalism or national security, Taiwan’s secession is a life-and-death issue. If Taiwanese authorities were to declare independence, the only option for Mainland China would be to launch a unification war. For the US, Taiwan is only a pawn that it uses to contain Mainland China. Therefore, in the Cross-Strait issue, the US has more options than Mainland China, namely, to use military intervention in the future to deter Chinese unification or to decide to share common peaceful international relations with Mainland China by accepting Cross-Strait unification.

Abstract:
In this paper the higgs mechanism for the standard model is constructed in steps. First by considering spontaneous breaking of discrete and continuous global gauge invariance. Then spontaneous breaking of local gauge invariance. These results are then used to construct the electroweak part of the standard model through application of the higgs mechanism. Finally, the LQT-upper bound of 1 TeV for the higgs mass is calculated through unitarity constraints.
I denna artikel konstrueras higgsmekanismen i standardmodellen stegvis.

Abstract:
Ecological travel (ecotourism) is the “next big thing”. To experience nature up close and personal is to backpack off the beaten track and these days this is the “hippest” way to travel. Ecotourism is seen as the most excelling fragment of tourism and The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) views tourism in an unspoilt natural area (ecotourism) as the fastest growing concept of the tourism industry. Ecotourism has evolved into speciality travel; including an assorted – and often confusing – collection of events and tourism types, for example bird watching, methodical study, photography, diving and trekking. Ecotourism takes place in unspoilt natural areas, lodges and conservation areas such as national parks. South African National Parks, (SANParks), whom manages a system of parks, and signifies the indigenous fauna & flora, landscapes and associated cultural heritage of the country. National parks offers facilities for overnight tourist, with a range of accommodation, in arid, coastal, mountain and bush veld habitats. A variety of incomparable adventure tourism opportunities, for example game viewing, bush walks, canoeing and exposure to cultural and historical experiences are offered by these national parks. SANParks’ objectives are the insurance of protection, conservation and management of the protected areas for the purposes they were declared. The key aspect of SANParks’ management operations is ecotourism. The three areas that the management of parks cover are general management which include finance and marketing; conservation management which consists of wildlife counting, sales of wildlife, environment etc. and ecotourism management which includes aspects such as camps, accommodation, game drives and picnic areas. Because ecotourism as an important aspect of park management and is one of SANParks’ core pillars, the main concern is which strategies and policies are in place in order to provide tourists with an ecotourism experience within South African National Parks? Tourism products (especially accommodation products) need to recognize that customers (tourists) have certain expectations and these expectations must be met. One way in meeting these expectations is to adhere to tourists’ perceptions and satisfaction as well as to provide a quality service. It is also seen as one of the most important influences on productivity and profit of a tourism organisation. One approach to obtain customer satisfaction and meeting expectations is to implement a grading/rating system. When managers and owners of accommodation and tourism products want to convince tourists of the quality of the organisation or tourism product that is being presented, a classification or rating system plays an important role to communicate this vital issue. South Africa has various rating systems / schemes, however there are no acknowledged rating systems for ecotourism products in South Africa National Parks. The shortcomings of these current rating systems are that they rate mostly the hospitality and accommodation sectors. These criteria’s tend to focus on the following: building exteriors, bedrooms, bathrooms, public area, general facilities, general services, housekeeping services, additional facilities and responsible environmental and business practices. None of these schemes focus primarily on ecotourism principles. These systems need to be adapted for nature/wildlife products and the problem that this study will address is to develop an ecotourism rating system for South African National Parks. It is essential to have a rating system in place to compete in the global world where ecotourism and green aspects are important and to deliver a valuable service. Therefore the problem that this research will addresses, is to develop an ecotourism rating system for South Africa National Parks. The research approach used in this study included quantitative methodologies. An explorative research approach was followed through an online questionnaire with the aim of determining the perceptions of visitors about the perceptions of respondents regarding the importance of specific ecotourism principles. These constructs were determined through a literature review. The sources consulted included the following: De Witt, 2011; Du Plessis, 2010; Geldenhuys, 2009:5; Saayman, 2009:70; Fennell, 2008:23; Blamey, 2001:12; Eagles, 1996; Dingwall and Gordon, 1996. The questionnaire was distributed electronically on the SANParks’ website. Data collection took place during April 2013. A total of 308 responses were received during the period of data collection. The results of the empirical quantitative data was analysed by the Statistical Consultation Services at the North-West University by means of the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) software programme. The statistical methods utilised included descriptive statistics and causal research. The descriptive statistics includes the demographic profile of respondents, the principles of ecotourism, the factor analysis and the factor correlation matrix. The causal research includes the t-test and the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results of the descriptive data indicated that the language most spoken by the respondents was primarily English followed by Afrikaans. The greater number of respondents was married and live in Gauteng. They were well educated with a diploma or degree. Most of the respondents were Wild Card holders and supports conservation organisations, such as Rhino Conservation, followed by SA Wildlife, SANParks Honorary Rangers, Green Peace, UNITE against poaching and World Wide Fund for Nature. Respondents’ understanding of responsible ecotourism is conserving and protecting nature, has a low impact on the environment and has an educational travel experience in any environment. The key principles of ecotourism, namely conservation of nature, conservation of culture, community involvement, environmental education, tourist satisfaction, responsible tourism practices, environmental education, tourist satisfaction, responsible tourism practices, role players participating in ecotourism – the tourist and accommodation and were rated based on a five point Likert scale. The principles that were rated with the highest mean values included: water sources are protected (4.83); tourists are told not to touch or disturb birds and animals (4.76); correct disposal of waste, including cigarette butts, into allocated waste bins is encouraged (4.73); dripping taps are fixed immediately (4.70) and noise is limited in natural areas (4.70). The exploratory factor analysis was conducted on the principles identified, they were as follows: Conservation of nature had five factors namely, Conservation; Controlled development; Environmental friendly; Alien plants; Water saving measurements. Conservation of culture had two factors namely, Local community involvement; Benefit for community. Community involvement had two factors namely, Benefits; Education for community. Environmental education had only one factor namely, learning experiences. Tourist satisfaction also had one factor namely, Tourist satisfaction. Responsible tourism practices had three factors namely, recycling and environmental friendly practices; Interaction with nature; Responsible practices. Tourist participation in ecotourism had one factor namely, Informed tourist. Accommodation had three factors namely, Eco-friendly practices and development; Touch the earth lightly; Environmental friendly accommodation. Group statistics namely t-tests and ANOVA’s were performed to determine whether there were any significant differences between the factors identified from the ecotourism principles. The ttest was used to compare the socio-demographic aspects, namely home language (English and Afrikaans) with all the ecotourism principles. The t-test was used to compare behavioural aspects, namely Wild Card holders (Yes and No) with all the ecotourism principles. This were done to determine if the respondents’ opinions differ about principles in terms of Wild Card holders or non- Wild Card holders. The ANOVA was tested for socio-demographic aspects of respondents namely, marital status. The ANOVA was tested for socio-demographic aspects of respondents namely, level of education. The research made the following contributions to the field of ecotourism. These contributions are made in three categories namely, literature, methodology and practical contributions: * It is the first time that literature about ecotourism are combined to identify principles and constructs. All rating criteria was investigated to do this. * First time that different rating systems regarding ecotourism was identified, analysed and compared to each other. * Added to the literature on future trends of ecotourism which will assist in the planning and development of ecotourism products as well as rating systems. * The rating system can assist in future ecotourism development in protected areas as the most important principle for ecotourism have been identified. * The research contribute to more environment friendly development of ecotourism accommodation products * It is the first time that all relevant aspects of ecotourism was identified and developed into questionnaire that test ecotourism rating constructs and principles. * The research also contribute to the fact that one knows what are the ecotourism constructs that are seen as important by the visitor to national parks. The empirical results also determined statistical differences of the constructs and principles regarding socio-demographic and behavioural aspects of the visitors to national parks in South Africa. * This was the first time that a specific rating system was developed for South African National Parks. * This rating system can also be adapted to other conservation areas such as game reserves and game farms.
