Abstract:
I appreciate Lee Ann Banaszak's thoughtful and insightful comments about my book. As she notes, there is a tendency in the kind of work we both do to focus on specific aspects of the complex policy process; her research on the role of the bureaucracy in policymaking makes her particularly well-positioned to identify the ways that a deeper focus on this area might have contributed to my own analysis of the Chilean case.

Abstract:
In this impressively researched and thought-provoking book, Lee Ann Banaszak explores the role of “movement insiders”—women's movement activists working inside the federal bureaucracy—in shaping policy on women's rights. Through a series of engaging narratives, she highlights the often-invisible role of feminist lawyers, regulators, other members of the civil service, and political appointees in shaping important policies on such issues as equal employment, educational equity (particularly Title IX), and foreign policy (women in development). Banaszak's investigation into the role of feminist activists within the bureaucracy illuminates the critical role that the movement played within the state on a number of policy issues. More broadly, her argument for an expanded view of the dynamics of social movements, movement–state intersections, and policymaking represents a needed corrective to the rather stark dichotomies that often dominate the study of social movements.

Abstract:
A feed-forward artificial neural network (ANN) model was used to link molecular structures (boiling points, connectivity indices and molecular weights) and retention indices of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in linear temperature- programmed gas chromatography. A randomly taken subset of PAH retention data reported by Lee et al. [Anal. Chem. 51 (1979) 768], containing retention index data for 30 PAHs, was used to make the ANN model. The prediction ability of the trained ANN was tested on unseen data for 18 PAHs from the same article, as well as on the retention data for 7 PAHs experimentally obtained in this work. In addition, two different data sets with known retention indices taken from the literature were analyzed by the same ANN model. It has been shown that the relative accuracy as the degree of agreement between the measured and the predicted retention indices in all testing sets, for most of the studied PAHs, were within the experimental error margins (+-3 %).

Abstract:
In this article, we study the lattice of Lawvere-Tierney topologies on Hyland’s effective topos. For this purpose, we introduce a new computability-theoretic reducibility notion, which is a common extension of the notions of Turing reducibility and generalized Weihrauch reducibility. Based on the work by Lee and van Oosten [Ann. Pure Appl. Logic 164 (2013), pp. 866-883], we utilize this reducibility notion for providing a concrete description of the lattice of the Lawvere-Tierney topologies on the effective topos. As an application, we solve several open problems proposed by Lee and van Oosten. For instance, we show that there exists no minimal Lawvere-Tierney topology which is strictly above the identity topology on the effective topos.

Abstract:
The exactitude of petroleum fluid molecular weight correlations affects significantly the precision of petroleum engineering calculations and can make process design and trouble-shooting inaccurate. Some of the methods in the literature to predict petroleum fluid molecular weight are used in commercial software process simulators. According to statements made in the literature, the correlations of Lee–Kesler and Twu are the most used in petroleum engineering, and the other methods do not exhibit any significant advantages over the Lee–Kesler and Twu correlations. In order to verify which of the proposed in the literature correlations are the most appropriate for petroleum fluids with molecular weight variation between 70 and 1685 g/mol, 430 data points for boiling point, specific gravity, and molecular weight of petroleum fluids and individual hydrocarbons were extracted from 17 literature sources. Besides the existing correlations in the literature, two different techniques, nonlinear regression and artificial neural network (ANN), were employed to model the molecular weight of the 430 petroleum fluid samples. It was found that the ANN model demonstrated the best accuracy of prediction with a relative standard error (RSE) of 7.2%, followed by the newly developed nonlinear regression correlation with an RSE of 10.9%. The best available molecular weight correlations in the literature were those of API (RSE = 12.4%), Goosens (RSE = 13.9%); and Riazi and Daubert (RSE = 15.2%). The well known molecular weight correlations of Lee–Kesler, and Twu, for the data set of 430 data points, exhibited RSEs of 26.5, and 30.3% respectively.

Abstract:
In the search of Yang–Mills (YM) instanton sheaves with topological charge two, the rank of [Formula: see text] matrix in the monad construction can be dropped from the bundle case with rank [Formula: see text] to either rank [Formula: see text] [S. H. Lai, J. C. Lee and I. H. Tsai, Yang–Mills instanton sheaves, Ann. Phys. 377 (2017) 446] or 0 on some points of [Formula: see text] of the sheaf cases. In this paper, we first show that the sheaf case with rank [Formula: see text] does not exist for the previous construction of [Formula: see text] complex YM instantons [S. H. Lai, J. C. Lee and I. H. Tsai, Biquaternions and ADHM construction of concompact [Formula: see text] Yang–Mills instantons, Ann. Phys. 361 (2015) 14]. We then show that in the new “extended complex YM instantons” discovered in this paper, rank [Formula: see text] can be either 2 on the whole [Formula: see text] (bundle) with some given ADHM data or 1, 0 on some points of [Formula: see text] with other ADHM data (sheaves). These extended [Formula: see text] complex YM instantons have no real instanton counterparts. Finally, the potential applications to real physics systems are noted in the end of the paper.

Abstract:
By investigating the case of female Thai migrants selling sexual services in Denmark, I argue that ‘the victim’ versus ‘the empowered subject’ is an undesirable binary for analysing how female migrants perform gendered subject positions in their everyday life. The article suggests a poststructuralist feminist perspective, arguing that looks and bodily practices, based on different constellations of gender and sexuality and race and nationality, are important for the research situation. Bringing in two different examples, the article analyses the field relations, and the implied power relations, - between the researcher(s) and the studied subjects that are constituted through gender, sexuality, race and nationality. These relations form the premises for producing material.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper makes a simple but previously neglected point with regard to an empirical application of the test of White (1989) and Lee, White, and Granger (LWG, 1993), for neglected nonlinearity in conditional mean, using the feedforward single layer artificial neural network (ANN). Because the activation parameters in the hidden layer are not identified under the null hypothesis of linearity, LWG suggested to activate the ANN hidden units based on the randomly generated activation parameters. Their Monte Carlo experiments demonstrated the excellent performance (good size and power), even if LWG considered a fairly small number (10 or 20) of random hidden unit activations. However, in this paper, we note that the good size and power of Monte Carlo experiments are the average frequencies of rejecting the null hypothsis over multiple replications of the data generating process. The average over many simulations in Monte Carlo smooths out the randomness of the activations. In an empirical study, unlike in a Monte Carlo study, multiple realizations of the data are not possible or available. In this case, the ANN test is sensitive to the randomly generated activation parameters. One solution is the use of Bonferroni bounds as suggested by LWG (1993), which however still exhibits some excessive dependence on the random activations (as shown in this paper). Another solution is to integrate the test statistic over the nuisance parameter space, for which however, bootstrap or simulation should be used to obtain the null distribution of the integrated statistic. In this paper, we consider a much simpler solution that is shown to work very well. That is, we simply increase the number of randomized hidden unit activations to a (very) large number (e.g. 1,000). We show that using many randomly generated activation parameters can robustify the performance of the ANN test when it is applied to a real empirical data. This robustification is reliable and useful in practice and can be achieved at no cost as increasing the number of random activations is almost costless given today’s computer technology.

Abstract:
BackgroundPatients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) on methotrexate have reduced vaccine responses. Temporary discontinuation has improved immunogenicity of anti-influenza vaccine, but this strategy has not been evaluated in anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.ObjectivesTo evaluate the effect on immunogenicity and safety of 2-week methotrexate (MTX) discontinuation after each dose of the Sinovac-CoronaVac vaccine versus MTX maintenance in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients.MethodsThis was a single-center, prospective, randomized, investigator-blinded, intervention study (#NCT04754698, CoronavRheum), including adult RA patients (stable CDAI≤10, prednisone ≤7.5mg/day), randomized (1:1) to withdraw MTX (MTX-hold) for 2 weeks after each vaccine dose or maintain MTX (MTX-maintain), evaluated at D0, D28 and D69. Co-primary outcomes were anti-SARS-CoV-2 S1/S2 IgG seroconversion(SC) and neutralizing antibody (NAb) positivity at D69. Secondary outcomes were geometric mean titers (GMT) and flare rates. For immunogenicity analyses, we excluded patients with baseline positive IgG/NAb, and, for safety reasons, those who flared at D28 (CDAI>10) and did not withdraw MTX twice.ResultsRandomization included 138 patients with 9 exclusions (5 COVID-19, 4 protocol violations). Safety evaluation included 60 (MTX-hold) and 69 (MTX-maintain) patients. Further exclusions: 27 patients [13 (21.7%) vs. 14 (20.3%), p=0.848] with positive baseline IgG/NAb and 10 patients (21.3%) in MTX-hold with CDAI>10 at D28. At D69, MTX-hold (n=37) had a higher rate of seroconversion than MTX-maintain (n=55) group [29 (78.4%) vs 30 (54.5%), p=0.019], with parallel augmentation in GMT [34.2 (25.2-46.4) vs 16.8 (11.9-23.6), p=0.006]. No differences were observed for NAb positivity [23 (62.2%) vs 27 (49.1%), p=0.217]. At D28 flare, rates were comparable in both groups (CDAI, p=0.122; DAS28-CRP, p=0.576), whereas CDAI>10 was more frequent in MTX-hold at D69 (p=0.024).Figure 1.ConclusionWe provide novel data that 2-week MTX withdrawal after each Sinovac-CoronaVac vaccine dose improves anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG response. The increased flare rates after second MTX withdrawal may be attributed to the short-term interval between vaccine doses. This strategy requires close surveillance and shared decision making due to the possibility of flares.References[1]Jara A, Undurraga EA, González C, et al.
