Abstract:
This article situates Bruce Lee at the heart of the emergence of ‘martial arts’. It argues that the notion ‘martial arts’, as we now know it, is a discursive entity that emerged in the wake of media texts, and that the influence of Bruce Lee films of the early 1970s was both seminal and structuring of ‘martial arts’, in ways that continue to be felt. Using the media theory proposition that a limited range of ‘key visuals’ structure the aesthetic terrain of the discursive entity ‘martial arts’, the article assesses the place, role and status of images of Bruce Lee as they work intertextually across a wide range of media texts. In so doing, the article demonstrates the enduring media legacy of Bruce Lee – one that has always overflowed the media realm and influenced the lived, embodied lifestyles of innumerable people the world over, who have seen Bruce Lee and other martial arts texts and gone on to study Chinese and Asian martial arts because of them.

Abstract:
This article situates Bruce Lee’s films and star persona in the context of wider patterns in global genre cinema of the 1960s and 1970s. I argue for a connection between the Western reception of Lee’s films and those of the mid-century Italian sword and sandal films, beginning with the Colosseum fight between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris that concludes Way of the Dragon (1972). From the dojo fights of Fist of Fury (1972), through the tournament structure in Enter the Dragon (1973), to his statistically led re-animation in the EA Sports UFC 3 (2018) videogame, Bruce Lee can be usefully considered as a gladiator. Bruce Lee, as fighter, performer and star persona, contributes to the enduring gladiatorial archetype that is an embedded feature in the Western visual imaginary. Furthermore, I argue that the gladiator archetype itself shifted because of Lee’s onscreen roles and the discourse that surrounds his star persona. In order to map these shifts and patterns of confluence, I chart three main points of impact that Lee has had on the gladiatorial archetype using his Western-facing roles on film and television, namely the television series Longstreet (1971–1972) and Enter the Dragon (1973). First, I consider the inclusion of martial arts and, second, the opening up of the field of representation to different models of masculinity, including a leaner body type and a non-White – in this case, ethnically Chinese – gladiator. The third point is the emphasis on a popular, or vernacular, stoicism. Ultimately, I elucidate the relationship between the gladiator, Bruce Lee, and philosophy, arguing that Lee embodies a vernacular stoicism that has become one of the defining features of the post-millennial gladiator and notions of heroic masculinity in popular culture more widely.

Abstract:
This article examines Bruce Lee’s films as a director as well as his influence on films in which he starred. Using Richard Dyer’s “star studies” framework in conjunction with Patrick McGilligan’s notion of the “actor as auteur,” this article analyzes Bruce Lee’s star persona and his authorial power and contends that a case can be made for Lee’s authorship even in films for which he did not serve as the director. Against the backdrop of Golden Harvest and the New Hollywood–modeled Hong Kong production context in which Lee worked, Lee’s fight scenes as a director are juxtaposed with his fight scenes as a star in the interest of identifying similarities and differences toward the goal of identifying greater similarities than critics and scholars have hitherto realized. Ultimately, this article proposes that so overpowering was Lee’s stardom that, whether as “merely” a star or as a “true” auteur, every Bruce Lee film bears his irrepressible signature.

Abstract:
Multiculturalism or cultural pluralism is a policy, ideal, or reality that emphasizes the unique characteristics of different cultures in the world, especially as they relate to one another in immigrant receiving nations. The word was first used in 1957 to describe Switzerland but first came into common currency in Canada in the late 1960s2. It quickly spread to other English- speaking and western developed countries.Although There is no clear link between the multiculturalism and the term that so called Balkanization, But this research tries to present the similar possibility of Multiculturalism discourse and Balkanization as a geopolitical term. In fact this research believes that   balkanization is The same idea of multiculturalism in practice, when it comes to the idea of state. On the other hand Vijay Parshad in his book Everybody was Kung Fu fighting  says that "I am interested in “how an investigation of kung fu can help us move from a limited multicultural framework into an antiracist, polycultural one.” This is the research and video that has been made about Bruce lee statue in Mostar, the divided city in Bosnia and Herzegovina", as a method of working in hyper- politicized society.

Abstract:
<p> Bruce Lee is a martial arts action star whose enduring screen image has lasted many decades beyond his death, and this is partially due to the numerous clones that came out after the star's premature death in 1973. These clones and various spin-offs of Lee's life's works resulted in the phenomenon dubbed "Bruceploitation." As time passed, the Bruceploitation phenomenon slowed down, but more recently there has been an interest in Bruce Lee's life with various films and television series that attempt to tell the life story of the actor, especially with his family's involvement. While earlier forms of Bruceploitation films strove to exploit Lee's image for financial profits, these more recent works do not seem to exploit Lee in the same way. In particular, Bruceploitation in more recent works aims to exploit the martial arts star's narrative to associate his persona with specific ideologies. I argue, however, that the more recent television series by China Central Television, <i>The Legend of Bruce Lee,</i> is in fact following in the legacy of Bruceploitation in that this category of texts is not only about making money without the consent of the star, but it is rooted in the act of exploitation, which redefined the image of Bruce Lee in a national Chinese context. Although the CCTV series may not look for financial profits as its main goal through the perpetuation of Lee's narrative, it is exploiting his image for ideological purposes. In particular, the series exploits Lee's image to assert national Chinese power in a global context, which can be seen through the production practices, circulation of the series, and the construction of specific scenes throughout the series. </p>

Abstract:
This dissertation considers the supportive and complementary relation between Mark Johnson’s embodied realism and Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do as a philosophical practice. In exploring this relationship, the emphasis on one’s embodiment condition and its relationship with metaphor and self-expression are the primary focus. First, this work involves providing an introduction to and an exploration of Johnson’s understanding of embodiment and his pragmatic realism with its foundation in metaphorical expression. Second, Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do serves as a kind of exemplification and possible case of effective metaphorical development founded upon a desire for metaphorical-based self-expression of a combat philosophy of embodiment. Third, an analysis of the convergence between the use of metaphor-based embodiment in Lee’s and Johnson’s philosophies is considered. In this respect, both views serve to promote communication and evolution of self-expression as a consequence of certain metaphors. In the final area of analysis, Peirce’s phenomenology offers an understanding of how Lee’s and Johnson’s metaphor-based embodiment provides a fuller context and awareness of the phenomena of embodiment.

Carvey, Andrew W. (Andrew Williams) 1980. "A metabolically efficient leg brace." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/42300.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2006.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 106-108).<br>Locomotion assistive devices can be broadly classified as either being passive or powered. Both have been created to aid in the leg's generation of a ground reaction force which supports the torso during locomotion, yet their inherent design has limited their functional growth to date. While many differing gait simulations have demonstrated stable solutions for lossless gait cycles, passive orthoses only diminish the user's impediment, and though powered gait exoskeletons can augment strength and endurance, they are limited by their energy demanding actuators. In response to these two extremes, an energy efficient locomotion assist device was developed from the basis of lossless gait models that did not require external power, and augmented locomotion by harvesting the inherent energy associated with the gait cycle. The simplest anthropomorphic leg can be modeled with a peg-leg shank, a knee, a thigh and a point mass for the head, arms and torso. Using a tuned non-linear hardening torsion spring at the knee joint, the torso support that is required between the ground and pelvis for lossless gait simulations can be generated; allowing the close physical realization of the theoretical. It was found that a single torsion spring can generate the leg thrusts necessary for a realistic range of walking and running gait velocities without the addition of any external power. While frictional losses do inhibit the locomotion assist device's efficiency, since the device functions in parallel with the user's leg, any losses can be supplemented with minimal muscular activity. These results give strong indication that a new avenue of gait assistive and gait augmenting devices that require minimal actuation energy is feasible.<br>by Andrew Williams Carvey.<br>S.M.

Abad, i. Ninet Antoni. "Teoria iusfilosòfica de Jürgen Habermas. Complementació amb l'obra de Bruce Ackerman." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/1755.

Full text
Abstract:
The Jus-philosophical theory of Jürgen Habermas. Complementation with the work of Bruce Ackerman"<br/><br/>TEXT:<br/><br/>The present doctoral thesis does not intend to be a comparison among the Habermas's theory and the theory of Ackerman in order to choose which of both proposals it seems us more suitable, but following the philosophical analysis of the Habermas's theory, I apply aspects which I consider compatibles of the Ackerman's work that I understand that should to be improved. I understand that the aspects that I highlight of the theory of Ackerman suppose an improvement of the normative philosophical project of Habermas.<br/><br/>The first chapter of the work is dedicated to the antecedents of the concept of law in the Jürgen Habermas's work. In this first chapter we intend to work with the influence of Max Weber to Habermas and, especially, about his law's conception and legitimation forms of the juridical rules. Once the rationalization is defined and how this process affects to the law and freedom, I analyze Max Weber's concept of law and how Habermas analyzes this concept at his Theory of The Communicative Action. Using the similarities among both authors, we also introduce a first definition of the concept of legitimate law at the Habermas's work.. the Weberian theory of rationalization in other authors, and the similarities with theories like the normalization in Foucault, the reification in Lukács, the juridification in Kolhberg or the decomodification of Polanyi. I also introduce in the first chapter the eternal discussion between the relativist and the universalists authors, between the positivism and the jus- naturalism.<br/><br/>The second chapter of the doctoral thesis is dedicated to the influences of the authors of the first generation of the school of Frankfurt , György Lukács and Kohlberg to the first Habermas's concept of law. In this section of the doctoral thesis, I wanted to develop the most important influences that the theories of the authors of the Frankfurt School produced to the Habermas's project of normative philosophy The third chapter of this thesis is related to the first concept of legitimate law at the first Habermas's. work I state that it is the first concept of law because I understand that Habermas with the appearance of the Faktizität und Geltung changes his ethical theory and the procedure of law legitimating. The present work analyzes the concept of law and his legitimation form until 1992 the year of the Faktizität und Geltung publication. This chapter is ground fundamentally on three works of Habermas, exposed in a chronological way, the Theory of the Communicative Action, Theory and Praxis, and Die nachholdende Revolution The two following chapters of the doctoral thesis are dedicate to the concept of legitimate law and the legitimation procedure that appears in the work the Faktizität und Geltung. The set of both chapters intend to expose the concept of legitimate law in a complete way; the elements; Principles and characteristics that form the democratic juridical theory in Habermas in the Faktizität und Geltung. With this exposure, we highlight the different variations that the concept has suffered along the Habermas's work.<br/><br/>Once we have analyzed the concept of legitimate law at the Habermas's work, the legitimation procedures and the different variations that it has suffered along his work, we dedicate the last chapter of the doctoral work making a complementation among the theory of Bruce Ackerman and the work of Habermas. </i>

Abstract:
This project aims to create an electronically powered and controlled knee brace to aid stroke victims with partial paralysis with their leg muscle rehabilitation process. The newly designed assistive bionic joint takes the functionality of the existing assistive knee braces to the next level by incorporating a control algorithm that uses sensor signals gathered from the patient’s leg muscles. Electromyography (EMG) is used for gathering impulse signals from electrodes placed on key muscles as inputs for the device. The action of each major leg muscle is replicated using a set of fluidic muscles that mimic the functionality of the actual leg muscles. A microcontroller is used to interpret sensor data and adjust the contraction length of the muscles, thereby providing the wearer with augmented strength and mobility. Initial testing of a proof-of-concept prototype has led to finite control over muscle contraction length based on sensor data and has a response time of 280ms from full extension to contraction. Further testing of the brace assembly, fluidic muscles and control system is conducted and the results indicate a 600ms response time due to a step input. This personalized, powered brace has many implications for the enrichment of muscle rehabilitation such as higher patient morale, more muscle activity, and shortened recovery times.

Abstract:
Abstract The advances in the field of mechatronics and robotics have allowed us to create a variety of medical devices. Comparable advances are not reported in the area of rehabilitation and assistive devices. In the prior work, the authors have created an automated orthotic knee joint that provides assistance to the victims of partial paralysis. This device uses electromyography sensors to gather impulse signals and use pneumatic actuators in the form of fluidic muscles. A microcontroller is used to interpret the signals from the sensors and uses a feedback control loop to provide augmented strength and mobility to the wearer. This paper reports a couple of experiments performed to characterize the behavior of this knee brace. Firstly, the brace is operated stand-alone with the help of electromyography sensors attached to a healthy individual. The system provided reaction times from one to three seconds, which is reasonable for an assistive device. Next, the system is attached to a mannequin that mimics the behavior of a human knee. While the brace is observed to be behaving as expected, the reaction times were significantly higher than that of the natural motion of the human leg. The study provided insights about several parameters that need to be optimized before the brace is completely operational.

Abstract:
Abstract Female athletes are more likely to incur a knee injury compared to men when competing in the same sport. The increased risk is due to anatomical, biomechanical and hormonal differences between males and females. Women anatomically, have wider hips and this creates a greater quadriceps angle, which is the angle measured between the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS), and a line that passes through the tibia trubercle and the middle of the patella (kneecap). Consequently, when landing after a jump, or making sudden movement, women tend to turn their feet inwards to compensate for a greater bending moment and this can result in knee injuries. This work involved using a prophylactic brace to retrain the muscle memory of the leg and thereby promote correct landing technique. The brace geometry was based on data collected from 20 previous women athletes and was 3D printed using ABS to allow some basic customization. However, even though the results were somewhat promising, they were statistically inconclusive due to unforeseen braced design issues. Consequently, a new brace will be redesigned using the feedback from the participants and a new study will be undertaken.

Abstract:
Since its first use in offshore project for drilling and production platform in 1984, more than two dozens of Tension Leg Platform (TLP) structures have been installed in oil and gas fields. The trend for using TLP structure in the exploration of deepwater oil fields has also gained momentum in recent years. The major driving force behind this is because the TLP structure has relatively smaller heave motion, thus it can be used for dry tree application in deepwater. Knee brace has found applications in the design of TLP structures. These vertically diagonal structure members are mainly used to support heavy vertical loads when the column spaces are large. The applications of knee braces have been used for two different stages: the integration stage and the in-place stage. For large topsides, the integration of the platform is usually performed in two or more separate lifting. The knee brace is used to temporarily support the pieces of the topsides before they are integrated together. For conventional type of TLP structures, the top tensioned vertical risers (TTRs) are placed in the middle of the platform to stay away from the mooring system and other subsea systems. The large column-to-column space and heavy TTR loads create some technical and economic challenges for the design of deck structures. To effectively take these vertical loads, knee brace is used to cut down the span of the deck supports. The challenge for this application is how to effectively share the vertical loads while at the same time not to induce much global dynamic action on the knee brace structure. This paper will review the application of knee braces in TLP projects, study the impact of the knee braces to the global action of the hull and topsides structures, and discuss the results of the analysis through a project example. The study will concentrate on the global load distribution through the knee braces, and the interaction between the knee braces and the hull structure under the global load action. Analysis results will be presented and the impact of the knee braces to the global structure will be discussed. These results will show that with proper configuration layout, the knee brace can be designed mainly to take the vertical static load, thus minimize the participation of the dynamic effect. The Author will also discuss the pros and cons of the knee brace structure in TLP application and some key issues which deserve attention during the application.

Abstract:
Knee orthotic devices are widely proposed by physicians and medical practitioners for preventive or therapeutic objectives in relation with their effects, usually known as to stabilize joint or restrict ranges of motion. The objectives of this work are to characterize the mechanical performance of knee orthoses using a Finite Element Model of a braced human leg. The interface properties of the model are calibrated against experimental data measured by full-field measurements of 3D displacement over the surface of a patient’s leg. The results show that the mechanical action of knee braces is essentially limited by skin/fabric and skin/muscles sliding. Finally, the model leads to a better understanding of the knee/brace interaction, and of the role of the brace components on the stability of the injured knee. Thanks to this computational tool, novel brace designs can be tested and evaluated for an optimal mechanical efficiency of the devices.

Abstract:
Rack Phase Difference or RPD may occur during the installation phase of a jack-up rig when it is jacking up at a location. Instances of failure of leg members of a jack-up have been reported in the past. Therefore, this is an important design issue. Among the many causes of high RPD, important ones are when one of the jack-up spudcans becomes eccentrically supported on the bottom or has lateral offset due to preexisting soft spots in the soil during installation. The resulting moment and shear on the leg is carried essentially by the horizontal guide reactions that may induce high stresses leading to failure of a diagonal brace in extreme cases. In a previous OMAE paper written by the authors [1] the importance of a 3D model of the jack-up that uses non-linear analysis methods by including large deformations and rotations was highlighted. In this paper it was also emphasized that the meaning of RPD has to be understood properly in relationship with moment or shear carrying capacity at the spudcan for a given jack-up. The present paper includes material plasticity effects in addition to the other nonlinearities in the 3D analysis to investigate the failure mechanism of a critical brace. Both applied moments due to the vertical load eccentricity at the spudcan and lateral displacement effects of it are considered. The behavior of a trussed leg jack-up depends heavily on the bracing pattern, chord and bay spacing as well as the size of the braces. For a well-designed jack-up the reserve strength beyond the initial exceedance of the allowable limits of member stress following the codes to the actual physical failure is considered to be important. This reserve strength could prevent actual damages to the rig. This paper discusses these aspects using one particular jack-up as example. The particular jack-up has shown very high RPD and reserve strength when a brace fails due to a large spudcan moment being applied or base deflection. The failure of the brace, however, does not indicate that the ultimate strength of the rig has been reached which is expected to be much higher. Although the analysis is for one particular jack-up, it discusses the parameters that in general could make the reserve strength large indicative of good design. These observations and the overall methodology of analysis used here could be beneficial to other rigs.

Abstract:
When humans hop or run on compliant surfaces they alter the stiffness of their legs so that the overall stiffness of the leg-surface system remains the same. Adding a spring in parallel to the ankle joint incites a similar neuromuscular response; humans decrease their biological ankle stiffness such that the overall ankle stiffness remains unchanged. These results suggest that an elastic exoskeleton could be effective at reducing the metabolic cost of locomotion. To further increase our understanding of human response we have developed an elastic knee brace that adds a stiff spring in parallel to the knee. It will be used as a test platform in ascertaining the neuromuscular effects of adding a parallel knee spring while hopping on one leg. This paper focuses primarily on the mechanical design and implementation of our elastic knee orthosis. Results of the forthcoming studies of human subjects wearing this knee orthosis will be presented in a separate article that will focus on the biomechanics and the neuromuscular adaptations of the human body. Prior research found that the neuromuscular response to hopping on compliant surfaces was the same when running on compliant surfaces. We expect that our results from hopping with springs in parallel with the knee will also be applicable to running. This elastic knee brace represents the first phase of an ongoing research project to develop a passive compliant lower-body exoskeleton to assist in human running. It is expected that this research will benefit healthy individuals as well as those with disabilities causing decreased muscle function.

Abstract:
A new beam-to-column (horizontal brace-to-leg) and bracing-to-frame (diagonal brace-to-horizontal brace/leg) connection was developed. It is a comprehensive package in which the solution to all of the shortcomings and deficiencies of all conventional and/or commonly used connections is provided. The major deficiency of basically all the existing beam-to-column connections is their inability to deliver large rotations. In this devised connection, it has been solved by using a totally different geometry—a geometry which does not restrict the joint from deforming freely in a smooth, uniform and non-violent manner. Such mode of deformation, if delivered by a ductile material, should lead to a high energy dissipation capacity. Especially, if the ductility of the constituting material of the connection is not degraded as a result of fabrication operations, or if so, it is restored through practicing a suitable heat treatment process, e.g. annealing, the energy dissipation capacity should improve substantially. Moreover, in order to attract the damage and prevent it from spreading through the beam (bracing) and the column (leg), whose replacement is formidable, the connection should work in a ‘sacrificial’ capacity. This, together with making it ‘replaceable,’ will reduce the cost of aftermath repair substantially, while replacing the damaged beam or column, if possible, is very costly. In addition to its high rotational (bending) capacity, at least 6 times those of conventional joints (depending on the connection design), its ‘shear deformation capacity’ is quite considerable, absolutely incomparable with those of its conventional counterparts, which are virtually ‘nil.’ This connection is a ‘self-contained separate entity’ which comprises two parallel attachment plates between which two circular, or else, tubes are laid and fixed through welding, though alternatively the whole combination can be produced by extrusion. In the ‘original version’ of the connection, the two plates are laid in a parallel relation with the axis of bending, whereas in its ‘alternate version,’ they are laid in an orthogonal relation with the axis of bending. Tests carried out on specimens of the two distinct versions of the connection proved all its claimed characteristics, both in shear and bending. In particular, those carried out more recently, not reported in previous papers (OMAE’02-28264 &amp; OMAE’03-37292), were quite revealing with regard to the ‘shear strength’ and the ‘shear deformation capacity’ of the original version (horizontally-laid-tube, HLT, version) of the connection—far beyond what was expected by the authors.
