Abstract:

This collection of poems explores the boundaries between certainty and uncertainty, between the desire for meaning and the destabilisation of meaning. The content encompasses everyday life, love and loss, and the ambiguities are reflected in the forms used, so that, for instance, the linear continuity of narrative and the musicality of the lyric may be juxtaposed with the fragmented and imagistic leaps of the associative poem.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study addresses site-specific sculptural practice and examines the tensions arising from the interactive relations between site and the artworks that exist within it. It applies the concept of ‘anthropophagy’ to re-signify traditional models of representation in order to re-organize them into new contexts through practice-led research into site-specificity. Anthropophagy, a metaphorical vision of the Brazilian indigenous people, utilises cannibalistic customs “in order to legitimate their critical, selective and metabolising appropriation of European artistic tendencies” (Mosqueira 2010: 12). The use of this concept in this thesis arises from the idea of simultaneously belonging to two geographically separated cultural universes: one individual (in my case, Brazilian) and another related to the centralised European/US cultural model of influence that dominates the art world. The differences and intersections between these two universes provide a rich field for practice-led research into how artistic creation is affected by attitudes to space and time. In order to explore this, the thesis is divided into four chapters. The first develops a theoretical framework dealing with concepts of space and time and demonstrates how anthropophagy draws these concepts together. The next chapter examines walking in the UK as an art practice to expand the understanding of site-specific practice through the artworks of Richard Long and Hamish Fulton. The third chapter focuses on work, site and location in order to examine how anthropophagy can re-signify the idea of walking as related in Chapter two. The final chapter analyses site-specificity, drawing on my own practice-led research explored through three art projects implemented in Brazil and England. These projects develop ways to negotiate the complex relationship between art, place and temporal contexts, re-inscribing events within specific sites over time. To build a methodology for the research, I have developed three different projects and situations testing the spatial-temporal contexts of site. By using site-specific art practice I shape my arguments upon a creative practice ruled by concepts, materials and techniques. In my practice I have delineated some creative responses to the transformations of the contemporary world, weaving iii reflections between work/site/body as well as on my own perception regarding current ‘temporalities’. The theoretical frameworks that inform this study range from postmodernism to globalisation theories in order to draw together work, site and location under the overarching concept of anthropophagy.

Abstract:
Abstract The effects of sinusoidal oscillations in the main flow on film cooling in the gas turbine were investigated by Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The film cooling flow fields for the sinusoidal oscillation of 32 Hz in the mainstream from a cylindrical hole inclined by 35° to a flat plate at average blowing ratio of M = 0.5 were numerically simulated. The LES results were compared to the experimental data from Seo, Lee and Ligrani (1998), Jung, Lee and Ligrani (2001) and Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) results. The experimental results showed that if the oscillation frequency in the main flow was increased, the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness was decreased. The credibility of the LES results relative to the experimental data was demonstrated by the comparison of time-averaged adiabatic film cooling effectiveness, time and phase-averaged temperature contours, contours of Q-criterion, time-averaged velocity profiles, and time and phase-averaged Urms profiles with the RANS results. The adiabatic film cooling effectiveness by LES model showed a good match to the experimental data, while RANS results highly over-predict the centerline effectiveness. Also, the LES results showed more consistent with the experimental data for the time-averaged and phase-averaged temperature contours, time-averaged velocity profiles and time and phase-averaged Urms profiles than the RANS results. RANS did not predict the peak generated by the jet penetration exactly and Urms profiles obtained by RANS approach was much smaller compared to the experimental results. Paper will discuss these results in detail.

Abstract:
There is a strong need to investigate aerodynamic noise caused by large and fast rotating wind turbines, especially trailing edge and tip noise. This work constitutes the first part of a project which aims to simulate the broadband tip noise emitted when the wind turbine is in operation. Several aeroacoustics methods are analyzed and their suitability for a typical wind turbine blade is assessed. A stationary wind turbine blade in an incident flow with a large region of separated flow is studied. The surface pressure fluctuations are calculated using compressible Large-Eddy simulation (LES). The aerodynamic noise perceived in the far-field is predicted by simulating the propagation of the pressure perturbations using LES and Linearized Euler equations (LEE) in the near field and Kirchhoff’s integral method in the far-field. It was found that for the present wind turbine blade with a large region of separated flow and thus relatively large fluctuations, LES with a fine enough mesh and a third-order upwind scheme is able to compute the propagation of acoustic waves as accurately as LEE with higher order schemes and separate treatment of acoustic perturbations. The method described in this paper will be used in the future to analyze a full wind turbine blade with the aim of optimizing the tip shape for reduced noise emission.

Abstract:
A new modeling formulation for turbulent chemistry interactions in large eddy simulation (LES) is presented that is based on a unique application of the linear-eddy model (LEM) that includes large scale strain effects. This novel application of the LEM may be used to predict turbulent flame extinction limits due to both small and large scale strain effects. Statistics from this modeling formulation may be used to generate an inexpensive run-time model for LES predictions. This paper presents the LEM modeling formulation and demonstrates the capabilities of the approach for augmentor conditions. A methodology is also presented to formulate a LES subgrid model based on the simulation data.

Abstract:
Th e article deals with the question on the essence of the cyborg. Th e author explores Čapek’s play R. U. R. and thinks over the transformation of time that might happen when an encounter of the living being with the inanimate system takes place. Th e author thinks also about the space of the factory as a home. It shows that the factory is the place where the artifi cial horizon is created.

Masters, Geoff. Time for a paradigm shift in school education? Australian Council for Educational Research, November 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.37517/91645.2020.1.

Abstract:
The thesis of this essay is that the current schooling paradigm is in need of review and that the answer may lie in a shift in how we think about teaching and learning. Under the prevailing paradigm, the role of teachers is to deliver the year-level curriculum to all students in a year level. This mismatch has unfortunate consequences for both teaching and learning. Currently, many students are not ready for their year-level curriculum because they lack prerequisite knowledge, skills and understandings. The basis for an alternative paradigm and a 'new normal' is presented. The essay addresses concerns raised about changes to curriculum, including that: changing the structure of the curriculum will mean abandoning year levels; teachers will be unable to manage classrooms in which students are not all working on the same content at the same time; some students will be disadvantaged if students are not all taught the same content at the same time; a restructured curriculum will result in ‘streaming’ and/or require the development of individual learning plans; a restructured curriculum will lower educational standards; and it will not be possible to do this in some subjects.

Abstract:
Although chemists, in general, are concerned with the art and science of constructing molecules and understanding their behavior, for a long time the idea that such molecules can be linked together by strong bonds to make infinite, extended structures were fraught with failure. The notion of using molecular building blocks to make such structures invariably led to chaotic, ill-defined materials and therefore not only defying the chemists’ need to exert their will on the design of matter but also preventing them from deciphering the atomic arrangement of such products. The field remained undeveloped for most of the twentieth century, and it was taken as an article of faith that linking molecules by strong bonds to make extended structures is a “waste of time” because “it doesn’t work.”

Tarko, Andrew P., Qiming Guo, and Raul Pineda-Mendez. Using Emerging and Extraordinary Data Sources to Improve Traffic Safety. Purdue University, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317283.

Full text
Abstract:
The current safety management program in Indiana uses a method based on aggregate crash data for conditions averaged over several-year periods with consideration of only major roadway features. This approach does not analyze the risk of crashes potentially affected by time-dependent conditions such as traffic control, operations, weather and their interaction with road geometry. With the rapid development of data collection techniques, time-dependent data have emerged, some of which have become available for safety management. This project investigated the feasibility of using emerging and existing data sources to supplement the current safety management practices in Indiana and performed a comprehensive evaluation of the quality of the new data sources and their relevance to traffic safety analysis. In two case studies, time-dependent data were acquired and integrated to estimate their effects on the hourly probability of crash and its severity on two selected types of roads: (1) rural freeways and (2) signalized intersections. The results indicate a considerable connection between hourly traffic volume, average speeds, and weather conditions on the hourly probability of crash and its severity. Although some roadway geometric features were found to affect safety, the lack of turning volume data at intersections led to some counterintuitive results. Improvements have been identified to be implemented in the next phase of the project to eliminate these undesirable results.

Abstract:
This study evaluates the impacts of low-cost, performance-based incentives in Tanzanian secondary schools. Results from a two-phase randomized trial show that incentives for teachers led to modest average improvements in student achievement across different subjects. Further, withdrawing incentives did not lead to a “discouragement effect” (once incentives were withdrawn, student performance did not fall below pre-baseline levels). Rather, impacts on learning were sustained beyond the intervention period. However, these incentives may have exacerbated learning inequality within and across schools. Increases in learning were concentrated among initially better-performing schools and students. At the same time, learning outcomes may have decreased for schools and students that were lower performing at baseline. Finally, the study finds that incentivizing students without simultaneously incentivizing teachers did not produce observable learning gains.
