Abstract:
Speaking to the idea of imperfect cosmopolitanisms, Leela Gandhi insists on this sense of imperfection, playing upon the grammatical import of the imperfect verb form: “Unlike the preterit form, which implies an already completed past action, the imperfective aspect renders an apparently concluded (perfected) action unfinished and suddenly infinitive. In this way the imperfectionism at the core of disapparation makes the subject of ethics into a perpetual—restless—work in progress.”

Wright, Neelam Sidhar. "Contemporary Bollywood Remakes." In Bollywood and Postmodernism. Edinburgh University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9780748696345.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines postmodern aesthetics in the contemporary Bollywood remake through an in-depth analysis of one of the genre's earliest, most prominent examples: the Devdas lineage. Two of the most popular and widely regarded versions of Devdas are discussed: Bimal Roy's 1955 classic and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2002 version. The chapter considers how Bollywood uses figural excess to rework and distinguish itself aesthetically from previous canonical Indian film texts, drawing upon Scott Lash's views on postmodernism as a ‘regime of signification’. It also explores how Bollywood cinema hybridises with Hollywood modes of filmmaking in order to de-authenticate and dismantle both American and its own cinematic codes and conventions. Finally, it describes synaesthesia in Indian cinema and offers a reading of two more films, Dil Chahta Hai and Kaante.

Fernandes, Leela. "Interpreting the Political Economy of the Indian State." In Interpreting Politics, 204–36. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190125011.003.0007.

Abstract:
Leela Fernandes points out that the Rudolphs’ analysis challenges the ‘homogenized, de-cultured language’ of conventional political economy to incorporate the unique as well as the general. The Rudolphs utilized a constructivist approach to illuminate how class, the state, and culture historically interacted to shape the way that people give meaning to their lives and ultimately fashion their political identity and behaviour. Fernandes sees class as a dynamic product of the interaction between the state, social relations, and the language and culture that people use to make sense of their world. She shows how the structural and discursive dimensions of class interact through the daily practice of resistance by women workers, the customs and rituals of religious festivals, and the community proceedings of organizations. Fernandes argues for a synthesis of structural approaches of political economy with the cultural sensitivities of area studies.
