Abstract:
A new genus and species of pennellid copepod, Protosarcotretes nishikawai n. g., n. sp., is described on the basis of an ovigerous female infecting a Pacific viperfish Chauliodus macouni collected from the deep-waters of Suruga Bay, Japan. The new genus exhibits the most plesiomorphic states in the first to fourth legs of pennellids, and is differentiated from two closely related pennellid genera Sarcotretes and Lernaeenicus by the morphology of the oral appendages. Two species of the genus Lernaeenicus are transferred to the new genus as Protosarcotretes multilobatus (Lewis, 1959) n. comb. and Protosarcotretes gnavus (Leigh-Sharpe, 1934) n. comb. The host specificity and life cycle of deep-sea pennellids are discussed. Sarcotretes scopeli Jungersen, 1911 and Cardiodectes bellottii (Richiardi, 1882) show low differentiated host-specificity, while P. nishikawai seems to be limited to the Stomiidae, which are rare hosts of pennellids, in contrast to the Myctophidae family. In the Pennellidae family, two patterns of the life cycle are found: with or without naupliar stages.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDas Restless-legs-Syndrom (RLS) ist eine der häufigsten neurologischen Erkrankungen. Gutachterliche Fragestellungen bei RLS-Patienten nehmen seit den vergangenen Jahren stetig zu. Daher hat die AG Motorik und Schlaf der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Schlafforschung und Schlafmedizin (DGSM) 2006 erstmals Empfehlungen zur Begutachtung und sozialmedizinischen Einschätzung des RLS erarbeitet. Im Folgenden werden die spezifischen Empfehlungen zur Beurteilung des RLS im Rahmen gutachterlicher Verfahren in einer Neubearbeitung vorgestellt. Diese Empfehlungen stellen eine Grundlage zur Vereinheitlichung und Qualitätssicherung in der Begutachtung des RLS dar, sie sollen jedoch nicht in die individuelle Freiheit und Verantwortung des jeweils beauftragten Gutachters eingreifen. Da bisher keine evidenzbasierten Studien über das RLS vorliegen, die die Besonderheiten der gutachterlichen Situation berücksichtigen, sind diese Empfehlungen als Konsensusdokument konzipiert.

Abstract:
Presumtionsreglerna i 11 kap. ÄB får anses vara ett hjälpmedel vid tolkning av testamenten som i sig inte ger tillräcklig ledning för vad testatorn avsett ska hända med sin kvarlåtenskap. Dessa presumtionsregler är tänkta att ge uttryck för vad testatorer i allmänhet vill ska hända med sitt arv efter sin bortgång i specifika situationer. Att reglerna ska ge uttryck för vad den ”genomsnittlige” testatorn vill innebär att reglernas utformning måste vara av generell karaktär. I denna uppsats utreder vi presumtionsregeln i 11 kap. 5 § ÄB som behandlar panträttsbelastade saklegat. Arbetet är avgränsat till att enbart behandla det fall då en fastighet har pantsatts och belånats för att finansiera uppförandet av en byggnad på ofri grund. Uppsatsen framställer en kritisk syn på utformningen av nu nämnda presumtionsregel enligt gällande rätt. För att utreda och peka på brister i gällande rätt används en deskriptiv metod, vilket är en förutsättning för den kommande analysen som undersöker möjligheten till en förändring av presumtionsregeln i fråga. Rättsläget analyseras sedermera med hjälp av en analytisk och problemorienterad metod. I denna del av uppsatsen inventeras argument för och emot de framlagda förslagen till förändring, varefter argumenten vägs mot varandra. På grundval av argumentationen tar författarna ställning till huruvida varje enskilt förslag är möjligt att genomföra. Resultatet av analysen är att införandet av ett andra stycke till presumtionsregeln i 11 kap. 5 § ÄB är det mest lämpliga alternativet för att lösa den problematik som behandlas. Ett sådant stycke skulle tydligt stadga vem som ska bära panträttsbelastningen vid testatorns bortgång för det fall att testatorn har pantsatt en fastighet för att finansiera uppförandet av en byggnad på ofri grund.
The rules of presumption in chapter 11 of the Swedish Inheritance Code are to be considered as an aid in the interpretation of wills, if the will itself does not provide sufficient guidance for what the deviser intended to happen with his legacy. These rules of presumption are meant to express what a deceased person in general would want to happen with his legacy in specific situations. The rules of presumption have to be of a general nature in order to represent the average deceased persons intentions. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the rule of presumption given in chapter 11. 5 § of the Swedish Inheritance Code concerning estate with an attached mortgage lien which the deviser in his will has left to a specific legatee. This thesis is limited to only treat the case where a mortgage lien on property is deposited as security for a loan in order to finance the construction of a building on leasehold. The thesis presents a critical view of the design of the aforementioned rule of presumption according to current legislation. In order to investigate and identify shortcomings in current law, a descriptive method is used, which is a prerequisite for future analysis that examines the possibility of a change of the rule of presumption in question.The legal position is analyzed with an analytical approach. In this part of the thesis, arguments for and against the proposals of change are being evaluated. On the basis of these arguments, the authors consider whether each proposal is possible to implement or not. The result of the analysis is that the introduction of a subparagraph to the rule of presumption in chapter 11. 5 § of the Swedish Inheritance Code is the most suitable option to solve the issues being treated in the thesis. Such a subparagraph would clearly state which one of the legatees who is obligated to carry the burden of the mortgage lien attached to the property that has been deposited in order to finance the construction of a building on leasehold.

Les historiens du Droit ont longtemps fait peu de cas du droit civil de la Révolution française qualifié péjorativement de droit intermédiaire. Mais depuis le bicentenaire de la Révolution française, ils ont révisé leur appréciation et davantage mis en exergue la modernité de cette législation que l’on peut désormais considérer comme une anticipation du droit contemporain de la famille. Cette thèse est une contribution à cette œuvre de réhabilitation. Le droit des successions de l’ancien régime était caractérisé par l’inégalité de ses règles. La proclamation de l’égalité civile dans la Déclaration des droits de l’homme et du citoyen de 1789 impliquait une refonte complète de cette matière. Les deux premières assemblées, la Constituante et la Législative n’avaient fait qu’entamer ce travail en supprimant les inégalités les plus manifestes, les privilèges d’aînesse et de masculinité, ce qui fut l’occasion de discussions sur le droit de tester. Ce fut la Convention qui réalisa les réformes les plus considérables et les plus célèbres à l’apogée de la Révolution, au moment où les tensions idéologiques étaient exacerbées. Un premier projet de Code civil fut discuté mais n’aboutit pas. En attendant la rédaction d’un second projet amendé, il fut résolu de mettre en application quelques parties du premier sur des questions qui semblaient particulièrement urgentes. C’est ainsi que des « articles d’appendice » du premier Code, furent mis en application au moyen de deux lois. La première est celle du 12 brumaire an II sur les droits des enfants naturels qui étaient essentiellement des droits successoraux, la seconde est la loi du 17 nivôse an II, sur la dévolution successorale et l’égalité des partages.Leur caractéristique commune était d’introduire la rétroactivité dans le règlement des successions ouvertes depuis le 14 juillet 1789, date symbolique de l’avènement de la liberté, pour hâter la mise en application des principes nouveaux. Cet effet rétroactif fut ensuite violemment critiqué, dès que la situation politique se retourna avec l’élimination des Robespierristes. De nombreuses plaintes affluèrent pour montrer les graves inconvénients pratiques de cette situation. Les législateurs postérieurs revinrent sur cet effet au moyen de lois qui s’échelonnent du 9 fructidor an III au 3 vendémiaire an IV. Les rédacteurs du Code civil maintinrent le principe d’égalité dans la famille fondée sur le mariage. Mais en ce qui concerne les enfants nés hors mariage, le code de 1804 consacre les solutions les plus dures qu’il était possible d’imaginer à leur encontre. Il n’est plus question d’égalité même tempérée. La situation de ces enfants ne fut améliorée que très lentement pendant 150 ans. Ce mouvement s’est néanmoins accéléré à partir de 1972 pour aboutir à la situation actuelle
Law historians have long ignored the civil law of the French Revolution, pejoratively termed as “intermediate right”. But since the bicentennial of the French Revolution, they have revised their appreciation and highlighted the modernity of this legislation that can now be considered as an anticipation of the contemporary law of the family. This thesis is a contribution to this rehabilitation work.The inheritance law of the old regime was characterized by the inequality of hits rules. The proclamation of civil equality in the Declaration of the Rights of Man of 1789 implied a complete overhaul of this subject. The first two assemblies, the Constituent Assembly and the Legislative Assembly, had only begun this work, removing the most obvious inequalities, the privileges of aeness and masculinity, which was the occasion for discussions on the right to test. It was the Convention that carried out the most important reforms at the height of the Revolution, at a time when ideological tensions were exacerbated. A first draft of the Civil Code was discussed but did not succeed.Pending the drafting of a second amended draft, it was resolved to implement some parts of the first, on matters which seemed particularly urgent. Thus, “appendix articles” of the first Code were implemented by means of two laws. The first is that of 12 Brumaire year II on the rights of natural children, which were essentially inheritance rights. The second is the law of 17 Nivôse year II, on the devolution of inheritance and the equality of shares.Their common feature was to introduce retroactivity into the settlement of estates opened since July 14, 1789, the symbolic date of the advent of freedom, to hasten the implementation of the new principles. . This retroactive effect was then violently criticized , as soon as the political situation tuned around with the elimination of the Robespierrists. Many complaints poured out to show the serious practical inconvenience of this situation.The later legislators returned to this effect, by means of laws which extended from the 9th Fructidor year III, to the 3rd Vendemiaire year IV. The drafters of the Civil Code maintained the principle of equality in the family based on the marriage. But with regard to the children born out of the wedlock, the Code of 1804 devotes the harshest solutions that could be imagined against them. It is no longer a question of even moderate equality. The situation of these children was only very slowly improved for 150 years. However, this movement accelerated from 1972 onwards to current situation

A úlcera de perna representa demanda crescente nos serviços de saúde. Por tratar-se de uma doença crônica, recorrente e de difícil manejo, a úlcera de perna é um problema que vem desafiando profissionais, pacientes e famílias. A necessidade de entender melhor a problemática existente no cuidado oferecido pelo enfermeiro ao paciente com úlcera e sua família, motivou a pergunta do estudo, a qual buscou responder como a família influencia e é influenciada pela úlcera de perna. O estudo teve como objetivo conhecer as percepções e crenças do paciente e de sua família em relação à úlcera de perna, bem como compreender como essas crenças influenciam o enfrentamento da família na experiência. O estudo de caso foi o método adotado, e as técnicas da história oral foram utilizadas para a coleta de dados. O estudo foi realizado com um casal idoso, o qual convive com a úlcera de perna da mulher, focando o impacto desse evento na história da família. As narrativas do casal permitiram a construção da memória coletiva organizada em três temas distintos os quais se inter-relacionam: Envelhecimento e doença, Jornada do tratamento, A ferida e o tempo. Os resultados permitiram compreender que a família influencia e é influenciada pela úlcera de perna e esta dinâmica determina um grande impacto na vida do casal que se encontra na fase tardia do ciclo de vida da família. O estudo identificou que as crenças do casal exercem grande influência sobre o impacto da doença em sua vida, além de determinar seu enfrentamento diante da situação. Este estudo, por considerar a família como categoria de análise, lança um novo olhar ao problema e acrescenta um conhecimento diferente no que se refere à relação entre a família e a ferida. Os resultados permitem uma reflexão acerca da importância do conhecimento profundo dos enfermeiros sobre as experiências dos pacientes e famílias que convivem com úlceras de perna. A valorização e o reconhecimento das forças da família no enfrentamento da doença e da mudança de comportamento do enfermeiro na prática clínica, a qual deve integrar um olhar além da ferida, considerando a interface entre a doença e o contexto familiar, são elementos capazes de estimular uma prática clínica centrada na família.
A leg ulcer is increasing demand on health services. Because it is chronic, recurrent and difficult to handle, leg ulcer is a problem that has defied professionals, patients and families. The need to better understand the problems existing in the care offered by nurses to patients with ulcer and their families led to the question of the study, which sought to answer how the family influences and is influenced by leg ulcer. The study aimed to understand the perceptions and beliefs of the patient and the family regarding leg ulcer as well as understand how these beliefs influence family coping experience. The case study method was adopted, and the techniques of oral history were used for data collection. The study was conducted with an elderly couple, who lives with woman\'s leg ulcer, focusing on the impact of this event in the family history. The narratives of the couple allowed the construction of collective memory organized into three distinct themes which are interrelated: Aging and illness, Journey of treatment, Wound and time. The results allowed to understand that family influences and is influenced by leg ulcers; family dynamics determines a great impact on the couples lives experiencing the late stage of the family life cycle. The study identified that the couples beliefs have great influence on the impact of the disease on their lives, and determine how they cope with the situation. This study, seeing the family as category of analysis, proposes a new perspective at the problem and adds new knowledge to the interaction between family and wound. The results allow a discussion about the importance of deep nursing knowledge about the experiences of patients and families living with leg ulcers. This new perspective requires a change in behavior of the nurse in clinical practice for a vision beyond the wound. The appreciation and recognition of the strengths of the family in coping with the illness and considering the interface between the disease and the family context are elements capable of stimulating a nursing family-centered practice.

Le conjoint survivant a, très souvent, été considéré comme un parent pauvre en matière successorale. Généralement défini, dans les pays d’Afrique francophone, comme l’époux non divorcé et contre lequel il n’existe pas de jugement de séparation passé en force de chose jugée, ses droits y ont connu une évolution significative.Les législations de ces pays ont été fortement inspirées des textes de la France, ex-puissance colonisatrice, principalement du Code civil de 1804 et des réformes subséquentes.Originellement, ces droits, caractérisés par leur hétérogénéité, ont, d’une part, coexisté entre eux, sous l’empire d’institutions traditionnelles hétéroclites, générant des droits inégalitaires, fondées notamment sur les privilèges de masculinité et de primogéniture. Cette coexistence s’est réalisée, d’autre part, avec les droits exogènes, en l’occurrence le droit français et le droit musulman, lesquels ont contribué à la mise en place générale d’un pluralisme juridique et d’un pluralisme successoral spécifique, dans un contexte partagé entre opposition et coordination des règles en présence.Aujourd’hui, le caractère homogène desdits droits est affirmé sur l’étendue du territoire de chacun des pays en revue. Ces droits sont dès lors octroyés par la loi, tout comme ils peuvent l’être par la volonté, sous réserve du respect des prohibitions relatives au contrat de mariage, et de la réserve des héritiers réservataires. En marge de cette consécration qui met surtout en évidence la vocation successorale du conjoint survivant, ces droits sont pour autant malmenés. Par conséquent, ils en appellent d’abord à une protection davantage fondée sur des règles de dévolution favorables au resserrement du noyau familial autour du foyer conjugal. Aussi, fort de l’espace communautaire et linguistique dans lequel ils évoluent, serait-il intéressant et adéquat d’envisager l’harmonisation des droits du conjoint survivant dans les pays d’Afrique francophone
The surviving spouse has very often been considered a poor relation in matters of inheritance. Generally defined, in French-speaking African countries, as the non-divorced spouse and against whom there is no final judgment of separation, his rights have undergone significant development. The laws of these countries were strongly inspired by the texts of France, the former colonizing power, mainly from the civil Code of 1804 and subsequent reforms.Originally, these rights, characterized by their heterogeneity, have, on the one hand, coexisted among themselves, under the influence of heterogeneous traditional institutions, generating unequal rights, based in particular on the privileges of masculinity and primogeniture. This coexistence was achieved, on the other hand, with the exogenous laws, in this case French law and Muslim law, which contributed to the general establishment of legal pluralism and specific inheritance pluralism, in a context shared between opposition and coordination of existing rules.Today, the homogeneous nature of these rights is affirmed throughout the territory of each of the countries under review. These rights are therefore granted by law, just as they can be by will, subject to compliance with the prohibitions relating to the marriage contract, and the reservation of reserved heirs. In addition to this consecration which above all highlights the inheritance vocation of the surviving spouse, these rights are nevertheless abused. Consequently, they first call for protection based more on devolution rules favorable to the tightening of the family nucleus around the matrimonial home. Also, on the strength of the community and linguistic space in which they operate, it would be interesting and appropriate to consider the harmonization of the rights of the surviving spouse in French-speaking African countries

Les évolutions contemporaines de la famille ainsi que leur dynamique sont le point de départ de notre recherche. Notre objet est de montrer en quoi et comment ces changements placent nécessairement les relations de l'enfant avec ses deux parents au centre de l'attention et de la normalisation sociale. Nous appelons ce processus le "parentalisme" que nous analysons dans ses deux versions sociétales française et allemande. A cet effet, nous comparons les modes de construction de la parentalité dans ces deux pays, comme le résultat des pratiques familiales, des effets sur ces pratiques de la participation des parents au marché du travail, d'une part, des politiques familiales et des dispositifs publiques de protection sociale, de l'autre.Dans le premier chapitre, nous étudions les formes de parentalité à partir d'un bilan de l'évolution socio-démographique des configurations familiales et des pratiques parentales pour mettre en évidence la manière dont la parentalité s'est peu à peu imposée comme une nouvelle unité "théorique", puis comment il est possible de définir les formes actuelles de parentalité ("bilatérale" et "unilatérale" ; "première" et "composée"). Puis, nous comparons l'activité professionnelle des pères et des mères et leurs effets sur la nature et la forme du lien entre l'enfant et ses parents. Enfin, nous nous consacrons à ce que les évolutions des politiques sociales et familiales donne à lire du rôle parental et de son partage entre les genres, mais aussi entre les parents et les pouvoirs publics. Une nouvelle distinction est proposée entre le modèle de la "parentalité exclusive" (quant le parent est inactif) et celui de la "parentalité conciliée" (quant il y a un exercice concomitant d'une activité professionnelle et des fonctions parentales).Le deuxième chapitre est consacré aux normes de parentalité à travers le traitement des risques familiaux engendrés par les ruptures conjugales. D'abord envisagée sous l'angle des évolutions du traitement juridique du risque familial, nous analysons ensuite la manière dont la norme actuelle de parentalité est construite dans les cas des familles unies et séparées. Et si la place de l'enfant est bien la même dans les deux pays, les rôles des pères et des mères, dans leurs relations personnelles à l'enfant, comme dans leur dimension conjugale, sont différents. La conception des rapports de genre mais aussi la nature du rapport entre l'Etat et la famille expliquent ces divergences. Le chapitre conclut sur le modèle de la "coparentalité" dans le cas français (véhiculant une norme de coopération parentale) et de la "biparentalité" dans le cas allemand (qui désigne une différenciation sexuée, une individualisation du rapport à l'enfant, et une non- ingérence des pouvoirs publics dans les rapports conjugaux).Le troisième chapitre est consacré aux pratiques de parentalité et au partage du "travail familial" en tenant compte des possibilités de délégation à des institutions, à l'effet de l'activité professionnelle de chaque parent et au rôle du réseau informel des ménages. Notre concept de "travail familial" désigne la négociation de l'ensemble des activités effectuées par les mères et les pères : professionnelles, parentales et domestiques. Notre objectif est de montrer, comment varient les pratiques familiales de partage du "travail familial", en fonction des différents modes d'intégration au marché de l'emploi. La répartition du travail parental ne s'effectue plus uniquement suivant les distinctions de genre, mais surtout suivant l'exercice de la parentalité (laquelle s'oriente de plus en plus vers une norme égalitaire malgré des inégalités encore persistantes).En conclusion, nous montrons que les rapports entre l'enfant et ses deux parents régulent actuellement les rapports familiaux, le risque familial et le partage du travail familial, définissant ainsi le "parentalisme". Puis, nous retraçons l'évolution des modes de régulation publique de la famille : le "parentalisme" fait suite en France au "familialisme" de l'après-guerre, puis au "féminisme" des années 1970 et 1980. En Allemagne, le "parentalisme" a succédé dans les années 1990 au "conjugalisme" de l'après-guerre. Ainsi, les deux pays convergent actuellement vers ce nouveau mode de régulation sociale, au delà de leurs différences sociétales dues aux effets spécifiques entre le marché du travail, l'Etat et la famille.

The people with the greatest stake in Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) interventions are the children and their parents/guardians. Unfortunately, most OVC programmes are predesigned and implemented without considering beneficiaries’ perceptions when developing solutions (ALI 2007:15). The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the perceptions of orphans and vulnerable children’s parents/guardians about the effectiveness of Future Families’ children programme in Olievenhoutbosch. This study used a qualitative, explorative and descriptive design. Thirteen parents/guardians of children registered with the Future Families were interviewed on the effectiveness of the Future Families programme using a semi-structure interview guide. The study results suggested that parents/guardians were happy with Future Families’ services and believed the programme is effective in responding to their families’ needs

The main causes of an acutely swollen calf are shown in Figure 28.1. Note that it is possible for different pathologies to coexist: a patient may present with a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and ruptured Baker’s cyst, for example. Also, many patients will get a swollen leg following surgery to that leg, but this shouldn’t present much of a diagnostic challenge (although you must obviously exclude DVT if the symptoms and signs warrant this) and therefore this is not included in the list in Figure 28.1. Yes, because most of the diseases listed in Figure 28.1 are local diseases and it would be highly unlikely for the patient to have two similar events in both legs at the same time. Instead, it would be more likely that the patient has either a systemic problem or a problem affecting central vessels. However, it is worth remembering that a DVT can arise in a patient with pre-existing bilateral leg oedema, so don’t rule out a DVT just because both legs are swollen. Figure 28.2 gives the main causes of bilateral swollen legs. • Are there any risk factors for venous thrombosis? Consider Virchow’s triad: ■ Hypercoagulable blood? Trauma, major surgery within the last 3 months, pregnancy and postpartum state (women are at increased risk of a venous clot for 6 weeks after birth and the risk is actually higher during the first few weeks after birth than during pregnancy itself), inflammatory bowel disease, active cancer, obesity (body mass index (BMI) >30 kg/m2), combined oral contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT), family history or past medical history of DVTs. ■ Stasis? Bed rest (>3 days) or long-haul travel (the actual length of flight that qualifies as ‘high risk’ is controversial). ■ Vessel injury? Trauma, surgery. • Has she felt breathless, had any chest pain, or coughed up any blood? If DVT is high on your differential list, it would be wise to enquire about symptoms of a possible pulmonary embolism (PE).

The propositus, a 2 1/2 year old boy, was found to have splenomegalia at a routine control, but was otherwise in good health. He had in his neonatal period had osteomyelitis in his left leg, compl. with sepsis and shock. His mother had had DVT in her left leg extending to the iliac vein in the puerp. Investigation of the boy and his mother showed a decrease of plasma plasminogen to about 50% of the normal both when assayed immunochem. and amidolyt. using the chrom. subst. S-2251 after activ. with SK. The same was found when using UK as the plasminogen activ. Investigation of 23 other members of the family showed another 11 members with the same defect but none of them had had DVT. The defect was inherited in an autosomally dominant way. Plasminogen was purified from plasma withdrawn from the mother of the propositus on a lysine Sepharose column. A normal aff. to lysine was noticed but the yield was low (43 mg/l plasma). The purified plasminogen showed the same spec, activ. as normal plasminogen purified in the same way (8.4 CTA u/mg and 8.7 CTA u/mg resp.). SDS-PAGE and crossed immunoelectrophoresis in tandem with the patient’s plasminogen and normal purified plasminogen revealed no difference between the two plasminogens. Furthermore, the same kinetic constants for the activ. by UK were found for both plasminogens. It is concluded that the plasminogen found in this family with a low incidence of DVT seemed to be normal. The reduced plasma concentration may be the result of a decreased synthesis of a normal protein.

A wide family of parallel manipulators (PMs) is the one that groups all the PMs with three legs where the legs become kinematic chains constituted of a passive spherical pair (S) in series with either a passive prismatic pair (P) or a passive revolute pair (R) when the actuators are locked. The topologies of the structures generated by these manipulators, when the actuators are locked, are ten. One out of these topologies is the SR-2PS topology (one SR leg and two PS legs). This paper presents an algorithm that determines all the assembly modes of the structures with topology SR-2PS in analytical form. The presented algorithm can be applied without changes to solve, in analytical form, the direct position analysis of any parallel manipulator which generates a SR-2PS structure when the actuators are locked. In particular, the closure equations of a generic structure with topology SR-2PS are written. The eliminant of this system of equations is determined and the solution procedure is presented. Finally, the proposed procedure is applied to a real case. This work demonstrates that the solutions of the direct position analysis of any parallel manipulator which generates a SR-2PS structure when the actuators are locked are at most eight.

The paper discusses mobility and singularities of the Exechon three-degree-of-freedom (dof) parallel mechanism (PM) on which a family of parallel kinematic machines is based. Exechon designs are used by a number of machine-tool makers. A new version of the manipulator has been developed as a component of a mobile self-reconfigurable fixture system within an inter-European project. The PM has two UPR (4-dof) legs, constrained to move in a common rotating plane, and an SPR (5-dof) leg. The paper focuses on the constraint and singularity analysis of the mechanism. The screw systems of end-effector freedoms and constraints are identified. The singular configurations are classified in detail and their geometric interpretation is discussed. The velocity kinematics and the Jacobian operator are formulated via a screw-system approach. A fully parameterized package of Maple tools has been developed and used to visualize singularities and their consequences.

In addition to acquiring data for code verification, the recent rapid Boron dilution (RBD) test program at the University of Maryland 2×4 Thermalhydraulic Loop Facility (UM 2×4 Loop) aimed to resolve several issues related to physical phenomena that can affect the reboration of a boron dilute slug as it travels to the core. Among these issues, confirmation was sought that buoyancy plays a minimal role in the mixing of the slug as it travels through the downcomer. The tests showed, however, that the Froude (Fr) number substantially impacts the downcomer flowpattern. The slug distribution in the downcomer clearly changes from penetrating downwards along a single jet when the Fr number is smaller than approximately 6 to splitting into two jets that form a stagnation region under the injection site when Fr exceeds approximately 10. This observation was initially made evaluating the evolution histories of Fr numbers throughout individual tests. Closer examination of a broad family of tests showed that the flowpattern can actually be predicted based on Fr numbers determined from initial and boundary test conditions. Even though global figures of merit for mixing, e.g., azimuthally averaged scalar descriptors of mixing at a horizontal level of the downcomer, are only weakly affected by Fr number changes, this finding has substantial implications to the computational assessment of rapid Boron-dilution (RBD) consequences. A thorough understanding of the flow field is an essential prerequisite in computational fluid dynamics modeling.

The Sprawl family of robots have demonstrated that fast and robust locomotion is possible over uneven terrain with only feed-forward control. In the absence of feed-back, the speed, efficiency, and stability of the system are largely functions of how well the physical system is tuned. This work describes the development of a dynamic model used to investigate the effects of design changes on system stability and performance. Simulation results show the surprisingly large region of configurations that result in stable locomotion, and how the shape of this region changes as a function of the passive properties of the hips. Understanding of this is critical since peak performance, as measured by running speed, tends to occur on the boundary of stable configurations. Simulation results were used to quantitatively redesign the legs of a version of the robot configured to run outdoors. Implementation of the design changes resulted in doubling the robot’s speed.

The paper presents a new member of Epi.q robot family, a series of mobile robots with a wheel-legged locomotion and with the ability to overcome obstacles and move on uneven terrains. The particular feature of this robot family is the ability to switch from a wheel locomotion to a leg locomotion without any external active control but only depending on the dynamic conditions. In particular this work deals with the design of the latest prototype developed, analyzing the design and construction phases. This prototype is more powerful than the previous thanks to the possibility to have four driving units instead of two. The robot architecture has been studied in order to be modular. Several robot configurations can be obtained with the same structure and this allows to test how each component affect the overall robot behavior. Moreover the mechanical design is more accurate and reliable respect to previous versions. A sensing system has been introduced with the aim to evaluate the performances of each robot architecture. Finally an on-board processor has been added. This allows the definition of more complex control logics such as the cooperation between a speed control with a torque control in the four driving units configuration. Moreover it increases the smart tasks that the robot is able to perform such as the developing of a remote autonomous control rather than a manual drive by an operator.
