Abstract:
The linguistic term “formulaic language” refers to fixed expressions or sequences of words that are often used as a single unit and are typically stored in memory and retrieved as complete units during communication, rather than being constructed or analyzed anew each time by the rules of grammar. Today, however, the concept of formulaicity has expanded beyond individual word combinations to include larger units as formulaic texts. In certain text genres such as abstracts and recipes, formulaicity is visible not only at the level of wording, but also in text content, structure, and layout. But it has not been examined in other text genres where professionals could benefit from this fixed structure in order to produce acceptable texts. In the present article we aim to analyze if wine tasting notes can be considered formulaic in nature. To meet our expectations, a corpus of wine tasting notes written originally in English will be used and collocations that help build up a text examined; by using Biel's text-organizing patterns and term-embedding collocations, and by analyzing tasting notes in terms of Gülich's criteria for formulaic texts, the present study will try to show if wine tasting notes are indeed formulaic. Our findings enhance dictionary entries by capturing the full spectrum of sensory experiences and professional terminology in oenology, improving lexical entries in both oenology and general monolingual dictionaries through the identification and categorization of formulaic language in wine tasting notes.

Abstract:
Background: Bouquet is a crucial characteristic indicative of wine quality that develops during the aging stage. The cytochrome P450 VvCYP76F14 multi-functionally catalyzes linalool into (E)-8-hydroxylinalool, (E)-8-oxolinalool, and (E)-8-carboxylinalool, which are direct precursors for wine bouquet. Wine bouquet was closely related to VvCYP76F14 activities. Method: The VvCYP76F14 genes were cloned from five wine grape varieties using a homologous cloning method. The variation in residues of VvCYP76F14s were assessed by multiple alignment of amino acid sequences. Functional studies were implemented by in vitro enzyme activity and transient over-expression systems. Results: D299T variation was observed in VvCYP76F14s of ‘Yantai 2-2-08’, ‘Yantai 2-2-19’, and ‘Yantai 2-3-37’ offspring lines, which was correlated with the decreased content of wine bouquet precursors of (E)-8-hydroxylinalool, (E)-8-oxolinalool, and (E)-8-carboxylinalool, respectively. Notably, the key amino acid residue D299 was located at the phase 0 intron positions of VvCYP76F14 genes isolated from distinct wine grape varieties or offspring lines, respectively. Notably, VvCYP76F14s of the ‘Yantai2-2-08’, ‘Yantai 2-2-19’, and ‘Yantai 2-3-37’ mutant lines exhibited lower in vitro enzymatic activities than those of ‘L35’ and ‘Merlot’. In addition, the transient expression of VvCYP76F14 cloned from ‘L35’ and ‘Merlot’ restored the levels of wine bouquet precursors in berries of three D299T mutant lines, respectively, whereas VvCYP76F14 cloned from D299T mutant lines failed. Conclusions: D299T variation was observed in three offspring lines and D299T mutation in VvCYP76F14 led to the decrease in wine bouquet precursor contents. VvCYP76F14 was implicated in the regulation of wine bouquet precursors in wine grapes.

Wine routes throughout European countries, and across the new world has created a link between wine and tourism. Wine tourism has gained popularity within the Western Cape province, famously in Stellenboch and Paarl howver not limiting close and surrounding vine routes of the western cape. The growth of tourism wine has led to an increase in the number of wines producing cellars and the route has been attracting tourists. Wine tourism in KwaZulu-Natal remains an untapped experience that includes touring vines that produces grapes, food paring, the wine lifestyle, wine culture and the creation of a relaxing environment for enjoyment and happiness of the guests. Tourism wine in KwaZulu Natal is niche market and untapped experience that can promote tourism in the KwaZulu-Natal province. Keywords: Wine Tourism, Wine Routes, Wine Culture, and Untapped

Abstract:

Abstract:
Wine tourism is a mutually beneficial opportunity for customers to experience a wine region and for wine producers to promote their individual practices and approaches in the wine- making process. This article aims to understand producers’ perspectives on the challenges they face when trying to protect their wine estate’s biodiversity as they develop wine-related touristic activities. The research is based on an exploratory, multiple case study of wine producers, who are protecting their wine estate’s biodiversity on in Languedoc-Roussillon region, France. The study reveals the important synergies between biodiversity and wine tourism to increase global sustainability, to bond with customers and to positively impact the wine region. Yet, promoting biodiversity on a wine estate creates tensions on resources and requires investments which are not always highly profitable. Raising awareness about biodiversity is also much needed at both ends of the “producer-customer” relationship. Our results led us to develop an ambidexterity model, adapted to the management of wineries, that concurrently protects their biodiversity and develops wine tourism. We believe these results can be useful for both public and private stakeholders to adapt their wine tourism service offers, and support wine producers in their quest to develop biodiversity of their lands and overall sustainability.

Abstract:
The importance of the vineyard in the agricultural economy throughout history is unquestionable. The quest for quality wines in a market increasingly competitive and globalized world is a goal of all wine regions in the world. In this context, the effort to innovate and to provide consumers more diversified and complementary products to the wine itself has led to the creation of a wide range of wine tourism, articulated on many occasions about the so-called wine routes. With the aim to guarantee the visitor a high quality tourism product, it has created the product Wine Routes of Spain, based on the idea that wine can be defined as a “territorial intensive product” (TIP) since it contains a strong reference in the territory in which it is produced.

Abstract:
This thesis aimed to compare the effects of constraints-led and traditional coaching approaches on young cricket spin bowlers, with a specific research focus on increasing spin rates (i.e., Revolutions per Minute). Participants were 22 spin bowlers from either an Australia state youth squad or an academy in England. Results indicate that adopting a constraints-led approach can benefit younger, inexperienced bowlers, whilst a traditional approach may assist more skilled, older bowlers. The findings are discussed with regards to how they may inform the learning design of training programs by cricket coaches.

Budd, Peter Frederick. "Changing the Gaze: A Photographic Representation of the Australian Wine Identities." Thesis, Griffith University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367468.

Full text
Abstract:
This research project took as its premise that Australian winemakers have contributed to Australia’s modern identity yet they remain, photographically, an unrepresented sector of Australian society, indeed almost a cliché. The photographic representation and promotion of the Australian wine industry it was argued created a wine gaze, but that imagery of winemakers took a secondary role to imagery projecting the cultural and industrial significance of that industry. Thus this project argues that the graphic documentation of Australian winemakers in contemporary Australia remains deeply inadequate and mono-dimensional but came about for three primary reasons. First, like beer, wine was seen as being a part of civilised society. However, despite wine gaining international recognition in the C19th it was beer that became the national drink. Second, given the strength of moral and wowser objections to alcohol consumption from the C19th as a potential danger to the family unit, the promotion of wine consumption focused on creating a positive image. This imagery emphasises as a counterpoint the economic and industrial basis of the wine industry in popular advertising, (particularly from the 1960’s) assigning people as props to wine’s industrial or agricultural process. The third aspect, was that the evolving Australian wine gaze was strongly educative. When the winemaker was featured invariably the image was that of a person holding a glass of wine up to the viewer. This became a photographic stereotype, a wine gaze educating a largely unfamiliar public how to act appreciatively with wine, and stressed the product more than the person. These factors fashioned a lack of an interpretative, photographic document of significant Australian winemakers. Given the rise of wine culture from the 1960s and its contribution to multiculturalism in Australia this inadequate photographic representation of Australian winemakers needed to be rectified.
Thesis (PhD Doctorate)
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Queensland College of Art
Arts, Education and Law
Full Text

Abstract:
During his American expedition Humboldt grappled intensively with the iniquities of colonialism. In the year 1803, for example, he noted "that the idea of a colony is itself an immoral idea, this idea of a land which is obliged to pay dues to another country." The colonial powers, wrote Humboldt, support intolerance, repression and slavery. However, he did not express his criticism in public during the expedition but entrusted it only to good friends and his diary. The lecture treats Humboldt's political stance during the expedition, based on human rights and his communicative role as a research traveller who, having returned to Europe, made his criticism public. Central to the lecture are examples of Humboldt's criticism of representatives of the colonial system. These make clear which important impulses the researcher gave to the independence movement and to the politicians of the young American states.

Abstract:
This study contributes to develop in students pleasure for learning physics and thus to improve the teaching of this discipline and the quality of their results. It is intended that students not only acquire new skills but to strengthen further the knowledge acquired over the years, in the area of physics, developing a set of skills and capacity, both general and specific discipline. This work presents a deep development about the theme: the sun and heat, more specifically on the blackbody radiation, the Stefan-Boltzmann Law and Wien Law. The behavior of the thermal radiation emitted by the bodies is in many different ways because one part of the radiation is reflected while another part is absorbed by the body. This phenomenon depends mainly on the specific characteristics of the body under study. Some scientists have said the body responds from peculiar way to radiation that focuses on its surface, been born the idea of “black bodies". The nature of perfect blackbody not yet been proven, once the body only acts as a blackbody for a specific radiation range, in other words, the body has its singularities. This study presents a definition of "blackbody", a detailed study about radiation in these bodies such as the theory on bodies were based, the Stefan-Boltzmann Law and Wien Law. In turn, this work focuses on theoretical and experimental study about the applicability of the Stefan-Boltzmann Law and of the Wien Law.

Bachmann, Hugo, and Walter Ammann. Schwingungsprobleme bei Bauwerken. International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), 1987. http://dx.doi.org/10.2749/sed003d.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract This chapter traces the evolution of psychological warfare’s theory and practice in the US military, with an emphasis on the counterinsurgency turn during the Vietnam War. It considers the significance of the United States Information Agency and its provision of technical and advisory support to friendly governments around the world. It focuses especially on the USIA’s Joint United States Public Affairs Office (JUSPAO), which in 1965 became the nerve centre of US information and psychological war programs in Vietnam. It details US efforts to ‘win the hearts and minds’ of the Vietnamese people, including the construction of Vietnam’s first national television broadcast system. It concludes that, despite their social scientific credentials, US psychological warriors found themselves unable to understand – let alone win – the hearts and minds of the Vietnamese people they sought to govern.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Purpose of the article: This article explores the untapped potential of Moldova's wine tourism sector as a key driver for attracting investment and fostering economic growth. Moldova's Wine Route of Moldova, the country's premier tourism route, is integrated into the Iter Vitis Les Chemins de la Vigne network, accredited by the Council of Europe, underscoring the role of heritage preservation and protection. Over the past decade, the number of wineries offering wine tourism services has increased sevenfold, reaching around 50 by 2024. These services range from wine tours and tastings to dining, accommodation, festivals, MICE events, and other winerelated experiences. Originality: Wine tourism is crucial for small winegrowers, many of whom depend heavily on domestic markets. By selling up to two-thirds of their production directly from the cellar door, these growers reduce sales costs, increase profit margins, and gain economic resilience. The employment intensity in the tourism sector of a winery is also significantly higher, with five times more staff required than for wine production alone. Additionally, wineries involved in tourism act as regional growth hubs, driving socio-economic development through the hub-and-spoke model, which benefits other local entrepreneurs and small businesses. Despite this growth and positive impact, wine tourism remains an underexploited investment opportunity. Conclusions: It concludes that targeted investments in infrastructure, marketing, and public-private partnerships are essential to unlock the full potential of wine tourism, creating substantial opportunities for both the wine industry and regional development. Methodology: This study adopts a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative analysis of investment trends, export data, and financial performance indicators with qualitative interviews of key stakeholders in Moldova's wine sector.

Abstract:
Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are ubiquitous in grazing small ruminants and cause significant costs due to production losses. Moreover, anthelmintic resistance (AR) is now widespread throughout Europe and poses a major threat to the sustainability of modern small ruminant livestock farming. Trichostrongylus colubriformis, an intestinal parasite of small ruminants, is the second nematode to Haemonchus contortus in terms of distribution and magnitude in several regions. The control of this helminth is traditionally achieved with the use of anthelmintic drugs, however due to regulations in organic farming and the rise in anthelmintic resistance (AR), alternatives are sought after. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro anthelmintic effects of olive (Olea uropaea), carob (Ceratonia siliqua), pomegranate juice ( unica granatum), wine (Vitis vibifera), citrus (Citrus Senensis), hazelnut (Corylys avellana) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) by-products extracts on T. colubriformis of sheep. Extracts of seven by-products were tested in vitro on two development stages of T. colubriformis (eggs and infective larvae) using the Egg Hatch Assay (EHA) and the Larval Exsheathment Inhibition Assay (LEIA). The egg hatching rate was measured after incubation with each by-product extract (concentrations: 150, 300, 600, 1200 mg/mL) for 48 h at 26 °C. nsheathed infective larvae were incubated for 3h at 20 °C with each by-product extract (concentrations: 150, 300, 600, 1200 mg/mL). Artificial exsheathment was induced in vitro by adding sodium hypocloride solution (2%w/v) diluted in 1 to 300 in PBS to the larval suspension. The progress of exsheathment over time was measured by repeated observations at 20-min intervals for 60 min (Moreno-Gonzalo et al., 2013. Vet Parasitol, 197:235-43). Among the 7 extracts tested using the two in vitro tests (EHA and LEIA), those with the greatest anthelmintic potential against T. colubriformis were the by-product extracts of wine, pomegranate and hazelnut. In particular, the inhibition in the development of eggs using EHA was 2.3%-48.5% for wine, 6.1%-48.1% for hazelnut and 18.6%-42.4% for pomegranate by-product extracts. The inhibition of exsheathment using LEIA was 87.5%-100% for wine, 54.5%-98.7% for hazelnut and 62.3%-100% for pomegranate by-product extracts. Results showed that by-product extracts of wine, pomegranate and hazelnut exhibits in vitro anthelmintic activity, suggesting that, these by-products can also be an ally for T. colubriformis control in sheep.

Abstract:
The production of wine with the addition of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) represents an innovative direction in winemaking, aimed at creating functional products with enhanced health benefits. GABA, as an important neurotransmitter, helps reduce stress, improve sleep, and lower blood pressure. This article examines methods for increasing GABA content in wine, including the use of various strains of yeast and bacteria such as Lactobacillus hilgardii and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, as well as the optimization of fermentation conditions. Data analysis showed that the choice of strains and fermentation conditions significantly affect GABA content. In particular, the use of Lactobacillus hilgardii led to a 30% increase in GABA concentration compared to Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The results are consistent with literature sources, confirming the effectiveness of pre-fermentation treatment of wine materials and the use of sequential fermentation to increase GABA content. The obtained results can be used to develop new approaches in industrial winemaking aimed at producing functional wines with enhanced health benefits.

Abstract:
The glassy-winged sharpshooter (Homalodisca vitripennis), native to the southeastern USA and northeastern Mexico, has become a major economic threat to the grape and wine industry of California, USA, due to its role as a vector for the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa. This pest has also spread to Hawaii, Cook Islands, Easter Island and French Polynesia. In California, chemical control measures have led to imidacloprid resistance, necessitating sustainable management options. Classical biological control has been effective, particularly using egg parasitoids from the genus Cosmocomoidea. The most successful species, Cosmocomoidea ashmeadi, has achieved parasitism rates of 80-100% and significantly reduced H. vitripennis populations in California and French Polynesia. Cosmocomoidea walkerjonesi offers complementary control, particularly in cooler regions. These parasitoids present promising long-term solutions for managing H. vitripennis populations.

Fait, Aaron, Grant Cramer, and Avichai Perl. Towards improved grape nutrition and defense: The regulation of stilbene metabolism under drought. United States Department of Agriculture, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2014.7594398.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
The goals of the present research proposal were to elucidate the physiological and molecular basis of the regulation of stilbene metabolism in grape, against the background of (i) grape metabolic network behavior in response to drought and of (ii) varietal diversity. The specific objectives included the study of the physiology of the response of different grape cultivars to continuous WD; the characterization of the differences and commonalities of gene network topology associated with WD in berry skin across varieties; the study of the metabolic response of developing berries to continuous WD with specific attention to the stilbene compounds; the integration analysis of the omics data generated; the study of isolated drought-associated stress factors on the regulation of stilbene biosynthesis in plantaand in vitro. Background to the topic Grape quality has a complex relationship with water input. Regulated water deficit (WD) is known to improve wine grapes by reducing the vine growth (without affecting fruit yield) and boosting sugar content (Keller et al. 2008). On the other hand, irregular rainfall during the summer can lead to drought-associated damage of fruit developmental process and alter fruit metabolism (Downey et al., 2006; Tarara et al., 2008; Chalmers et al., 792). In areas undergoing desertification, WD is associated with high temperatures. This WD/high temperature synergism can limit the areas of grape cultivation and can damage yields and fruit quality. Grapes and wine are the major source of stilbenes in human nutrition, and multiple stilbene-derived compounds, including isomers, polymers and glycosylated forms, have also been characterized in grapes (Jeandet et al., 2002; Halls and Yu, 2008). Heterologous expression of stilbenesynthase (STS) in a variety of plants has led to an enhanced resistance to pathogens, but in others the association has not been proven (Kobayashi et al., 2000; Soleas et al., 1995). Tomato transgenic plants harboring a grape STS had increased levels of resveratrol, ascorbate, and glutathione at the expense of the anthocyanin pathways (Giovinazzo et al. 2005), further emphasizing the intermingled relation among secondary metabolic pathways. Stilbenes are are induced in green and fleshy parts of the berries by biotic and abiotic elicitors (Chong et al., 2009). As is the case for other classes of secondary metabolites, the biosynthesis of stilbenes is not very well understood, but it is known to be under tight spatial and temporal control, which limits the availability of these compounds from plant sources. Only very few studies have attempted to analyze the effects of different environmental components on stilbene accumulation (Jeandet et al., 1995; Martinez-Ortega et al., 2000). Targeted analyses have generally shown higher levels of resveratrol in the grape skin (induced), in seeded varieties, in varieties of wine grapes, and in dark-skinned varieties (Gatto et al., 2008; summarized by Bavaresco et al., 2009). Yet, the effect of the grape variety and the rootstock on stilbene metabolism has not yet been thoroughly investigated (Bavaresco et al., 2009). The study identified a link between vine hydraulic behavior and physiology of stress with the leaf metabolism, which the PIs believe can eventually lead to the modifications identified in the developing berries that interested the polyphenol metabolism and its regulation during development and under stress. Implications are discussed below.

Abstract:
In recent years there has been a growing concern over the performance of Israel and U.S. agricultural marketing organizations. In Israel, poor performance of some marketing institutions has led to radical reforms. Examples are the two leading export industries - citrus and flowers. In the U.S., growth of local market power is eliminating competitive row product prices which served as the basis for farmer cooperative payment plans. This research studies, theoretically, several aspects of the above problem and develops empirical methods to assess their relative importance. The theoretical part deals with two related aspects of the operation of processing and marketing firms. The first is the technological structure of these firms. To this end, we formalize a detailed theory that describes the production process itself and the firm's decision. The model accounts for multiple products and product characteristics. The usefulness of the theory for measurement of productivity and pricing of raw material is demonstrated. The second aspect of the processing and marketing firm that we study is unique to the agricultural sector, where many such firms are cooperatives. In such cooperative an efficient and fair mechanism for purchasing raw materials from members is crucial to successful performances of the firm. We focus on: 1) pricing of raw materials. 2) comparison of employment of quota and price regimes by the cooperative to regulate the quantities, supplied by members. We take into consideration that the cooperative management is subject to pressure from member farmers. 3) Tier pricing for raw materials in order to ensure efficiency and zero profits at the cooperative level. This problem is examined in both closed and open cooperatives. The empirical part focuses in: 1) the development of methodologies for estimating demand for differentiated products; 2) assessing farmers response to component pricing; 3) measurement of potential and actual exploitation of market power by an agricultural marketing firm. The usefulness of the developed methodologies are demonstrated by several application to agricultural sub-sectors, including: U.S. dairy industry, Oregon wine industry, Israeli Cotton industry and Israeli Citrus industry.

Naim, Michael, Andrew Spielman, Shlomo Nir, and Ann Noble. Bitter Taste Transduction: Cellular Pathways, Inhibition and Implications for Human Acceptance of Agricultural Food Products. United States Department of Agriculture, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2000.7695839.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Historically, the aversive response of humans and other mammals to bitter-taste substances has been useful for survival, since many toxic constituents taste bitter. Today, the range of foods available is more diverse. Many bitter foods are not only safe for consumption but contain bitter constituents that provide nutritional benefits. Despite this, these foods are often eliminated from our current diets because of their unacceptable bitterness. Extensive technology has been developed to remove or mask bitterness in foods, but a lack of understanding of the mechanisms of bitterness perception at the taste receptor level has prevented the development of inhibitors or efficient methods for reducing bitterness. In our original application we proposed to: (a) investigate the time course and effect of selected bitter tastants relevant to agricultural products on the formation of intracellular signal molecules (cAMP, IP3, Ca2+) in intact taste cells, in model cells and in membranes derived therefrom; (b) study the effect of specific bitter taste inhibitors on messenger formation and identify G-proteins that may be involved in tastant-induced bitter sensation; (c) investigate interactions and self-aggregation of bitter tastants within membranes; (d) study human sensory responses over time to these bitter-taste stimuli and inhibitors in order to validate the biochemical data. Quench-flow module (QFM) and fast pipetting system (FPS) allowed us to monitor fast release of the aforementioned signal molecules (cGMP, as a putative initial signal was substituted for Ca2+ ions) - using taste membranes and intact taste cells in a time range below 500 ms (real time of taste sensation) - in response to bitter-taste stimulation. Limonin (citrus) and catechin (wine) were found to reduce cellular cAMP and increase IP3 contents. Naringin (citrus) stimulated an IP3 increase whereas the cheese-derived bitter peptide cyclo(leu-Trp) reduced IP3 but significantly increased cAMP levels. Thus, specific transduction pathways were identified, the results support the notion of multiple transduction pathways for bitter taste and cross-talk between a few of those transduction pathways. Furthermore, amphipathic tastants permeate rapidly (within seconds) into liposomes and taste cells suggesting their availability for direct activation of signal transduction components by means of receptor-independent mechanisms within the time course of taste sensation. The activation of pigment movement and transduction pathways in frog melanophores by these tastants supports such mechanisms. Some bitter tastants, due to their amphipathic properties, permeated (or interacted with) into a bitter tastant inhibitor (specific phospholipid mixture) which apparently forms micelles. Thus, a mechanism via which this bitter taste inhibitor acts is proposed. Human sensory evaluation experiments humans performed according to their 6-n-propyl thiouracil (PROP) status (non-tasters, tasters, super-tasters), indicated differential perception of bitterness threshold and intensity of these bitter compounds by different individuals independent of PROP status. This suggests that natural products containing bitter compounds (e.g., naringin and limonin in citrus), are perceived very differently, and are in line with multiple transduction pathways suggested in the biochemical experiments. This project provides the first comprehensive effort to explore the molecular basis of bitter taste at the taste-cell level induced by economically important and agriculturally relevant food products. The findings, proposing a mechanism for bitter-taste inhibition by a bitter taste inhibitor (made up of food components) pave the way for the development of new, and perhaps more potent bitter-taste inhibitors which may eventually become economically relevant.

The article examines the language of the russian-ukrainian war of the 21st century based on the materials of compressed media texts; the role of political narratives and psychological-emotional markers in the creation of new lexemes is clarified; the verbal expression of forecasts of ukrainian and foreign analysts regarding the course of hostilities on the territory of Ukraine is shown. Compressed media texts reflect the main meanings of the language of the russian-ukrainian war in relation to the surrounding world. First of all, the media vocabulary was supplemented with neologisms – aggressive and sad: “rashism”, “denazification”, “katsapstan”, “orks”, “rusnia”, “kremlins”, “parebrik”, “in the swamps”, “nuclear dictator”, “putinism”, “two hundred” and others. Numerals acquired new expressive and evaluative meanings: “200s” (dead), “300s” (wounded), “400s” (russian military personnel who filed reports for termination of the contract), “500s” (hopelessly drunk russian soldiers, alcoholics who are unable to perform combat tasks). The language of war intensified the slogans of the struggle for state independence and people’s freedom. The scope of the greeting “Glory to Ukraine! – Glory to Heroes!”. New official holidays have appeared in the history of Ukraine since 2014: “Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred” Day (February 20), “Ukrainian Volunteer Day” (March 14), “Defenders and Defenders of Ukraine Day” (October 14), “Volunteer Day” (5 December). As you know, the professional holiday of the military is the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine” (December 6). A special style is characteristic of media texts on military topics: “Iron Force of Ukraine” (Iron Force of Ukraine), “digitize the Army” (for effective simulation of military operations); “grain corridor” (export of Ukrainian grain to African and European countries); “don’t let Ukraine lose” (the position of the Allies at the first stage of the war), “Ukraine must win!” (the position of the Allies in the second stage of the war); “in the Russian-Ukrainian war, the thinking of the 19th century collided with the thinking of the 21st century”, “a politician is a person who understands time” (Grigori Yavlinskyy, Russian oppositionist); “aggressive neutrality” (about Turkey’s position); “in Russia”, “there, in the swamps” (in Russia), “weak, inadequate evil” (about Russia), “behind the fence”; “a great reset of the world order”; “technology of military creativity”; “they are not Russian and not Ukrainian, they are Soviet”, “people without mentality”, “in Ukraine and without Ukraine” (Vitaly Portnikov about a separate category of Russian-speaking citizens in Ukraine); “information bed of Ukraine” (about combat operations on the front line; “when a descendant asks me what I did in those terrifying moments, I will know what to answer. At the very least, I did not stand aside” (opinion of a Ukrainian fighter). Compressed in media texts is implemented in the headline, note, infographic, chronicle, digest, help, caption for photos, blitz poll, interview, short articles, caricature, visual text, commercial, etc. Researchers add “nominative-representative text (business card text, titles of sections, pages, names of presenters, etc.) to concise media texts for a functional and pragmatic purpose.” accent text (quote, key idea); text-navigator (content, news feed, indication of movement or time); chronotope”. A specific linguistic phenomenon known as “language compression” is widespread in media texts. Language compression is the art of minimization; attention is focused on the main, the most essential, everything secondary is filtered out. Compression uses words succinctly and sparingly to convey the meaning as much as possible. For example, the headline “Racism. What is the essence of the new ideology of the Russian occupiers?”. The note briefly explains the meaning of this concept and explains the difference from “nazism” and “fascism”. Key words: compressed media text, language compression, language of war, emotional markers, expressive neologisms, political journalism.

Abstract:
In 2023, the Colombian economy made progress in the macroeconomic adjustment required to achieve growth compatible with its productive capacity and external and price stability. This adjustment was reflected in the beginning of the convergence of inflation towards the target, which closed the year at 9.3%. This adjustment is an important step forward in the Board of Directors’ (BDBR) intention to drive inflation toward its target by mid-2025. Net foreign reserves increased and at the end of 2023 reached USD 59,608.3 million, and Banco de la República’s (the Central Bank of Colombia, Banrep) profit amounted to COP 9,226 billion. International Macroeconomic Environment IMF measurements indicate that global gross domestic product (GDP) growth was reduced from 3.5% in 2022 to 3.1% in 2023, and according to World Bank estimates, from 3.3% to 3.0%. This is due to the contractionary monetary policy of many central banks, fiscal tightening in most advanced countries, and high international uncertainty due to the conflicts between Russia and Ukraine and in the Middle East, among others. Global total inflation moderated in 2023 as a result of lower energy prices, normalization of global supply chains, lower food prices, and reduced demand dynamism in many countries resulting from the synchronized cycle of contractionary monetary policy and less expansionary fiscal policies. Thus, by December 2023, annual inflation for OECD members stood at 6.0%, after the maximum level observed in October 2022 (10.7%). The various international agencies forecast global economic growth for 2024 to be equal to or marginally lower than that recorded in 2023. Thus, according to the IMF, world growth in 2024 would remain unchanged at 3.1%; for the World Bank, it would fall from 3.0% to 2.9%, and according to the OECD, it would decrease from 3.1% to 2.9%. For Latin America and the Caribbean, after an estimated growth of 2.5% in 2023, the IMF forecasts a slowdown to 1.9% in 2024. Economic Activity in Colombia According to the information from DANE (National Administrative Department of Statistics), the Colombian economic growth in 2023 was 0.6%, which was below all forecasts. This slowdown was caused by a combination of factors after recording all-time high growth in 2021 (10.7%) and 2022 (7.3%) that led the GDP to levels higher than those recorded before the pandemic. The reasons for this slowdown include contractionary monetary policy, moderation of expenditure towards levels compatible with the economy's productive capacity, and a lower dynamism of all types of credit. Likewise, the adjustment in public finances related to an increase in tax collection that caused a 4-point decrease in the General Government deficit, the contraction in civil works, and the uncertainty that affected investment decisions. The technical staff's growth projections foresee a moderate expansion in 2024 of around 0.8% and forecast that by 2025, the economy will enter a significant recovery phase, achieving an annual growth of 3.5%. Employment The national unemployment rate decreased in 2023 to 10.4% at the end of the year, driven by the urban area. This was partially offset by the increase in unemployment in other municipalities and the rural area as of the third quarter. Salaried and formal employment was the most dynamic segment during 2023, with an increase of 2.9%. This was reflected in a decrease of the informality rate from 57.1% at the end of 2022 to 55.1% in December 2023, reaching all-time lows. Forecasts on the evolution of the unemployment rate for this year suggest that urban unemployment will average between 9.0% and 12.1%, with 10.5 % being the most likely value. In turn, the national unemployment rate could be between 9.3% and 12.4%, with 10.8% being the most likely value. Inflation and Monetary Policy Annual consumer price inflation in Colombia peaked at 13.34% in March 2023, and as of April, it began a downward trend, reaching a level of 9.28% at the end of 2023. Thereby, the annual inflation rate returned to single-digit territory after 17 months of remaining above 10%. In January 2024, inflation continued to decline, at 8.35% yearly, below the technical staff's expectations. This meant a new and important step forward in the process of inflation convergence towards the target. With clear signs of lower inflationary pressures, the BDBR proceeded to cut the policy rate by 25 bps in each of its December and January sessions, bringing it to 12.75%. Balance of Payments According to the information on the balance of payments the current account deficit during 2023 stood at 2.7% of GDP, 3.5 pp of GDP lower than that recorded in the same period of 2022 (6.2% of GDP). All components of the current account contributed to this correction. The largest adjustment occurred in the trade balance of goods, whose deficit was USD 5,310 million lower than a year ago. This is explained by the significant fall in imports, which exceeded the reduction in the value of exports. By 2024, Banco de la República's technical staff projects a current account deficit close to 3.0% of GDP in an environment of low economic growth and moderate recovery of domestic demand. Public Finances The General Government (GG) deficit was reduced from 6.5% of GDP in 2022 to 2.5% in 2023. This important correction was possible due to the adjustment made in most of the components of this level of government, particularly in the Fuel Price Stabilization Fund (FEPC in Spanish) and in the Central National Government (CNG). In 2023, the CNG achieved a substantial adjustment to its finances due to the increased tax collections derived from the 2021 and 2022 tax reforms, the higher oil revenues, increased dividends from Ecopetrol, and increased profits from Banco de la República. By 2024, the CNG’s total and primary deficits are projected to widen by 5.3% and 0.9% of GDP, respectively. The tax revenues would increase from 16.6% of GDP in 2023 to 17.3% in 2024, reaching an all-time high. Foreign Reserves Net foreign reserves at the end of 2023 totaled USD 59,608.3 m, i.e., an increase of USD 2,339 m during the year. The main factor explaining this increase is the interests received on investments. The return on foreign reserves during 2023, excluding the foreign exchange component, was 4.0% (USD 2,355 m). In the last months of the year, there was an increase in investment prices due to the reduction in short and medium-term interest rates in the main markets in which foreign reserves are invested. The indicators that evaluate foreign reserves suggest that as of December 2023, their level are adequate. Profits of Banco de la República At the end of 2023, the Bank's profit was at an all-time high and amounted to COP 9,226 billion, resulting from revenues of COP 14,798 billion and expenses of COP 5,572 billion. Revenues observed in 2023 were COP 10,350 billion higher than in 2022, mainly due to the yield of foreign reserves. Expenses were COP 2,630 billion higher than those of the previous year, mainly due to the increase in the remuneration of the Colombian Government's deposits in Banrep, given the increases in the interest rate of the monetary policy and higher average balances. For 2024, profit is projected at COP 10,345 billion, higher than that observed for 2023. This result would be the product of revenues of COP 15,620 billion and expenses of COP 5,275 billion.

Abstract:
From this edition, the Financial Stability Report will have fewer pages with some changes in its structure. The purpose of this change is to present the most relevant facts of the financial system and their implications on the financial stability. This allows displaying the analysis more concisely and clearly, as it will focus on describing the evolution of the variables that have the greatest impact on the performance of the financial system, for estimating then the effect of a possible materialization of these risks on the financial health of the institutions. The changing dynamics of the risks faced by the financial system implies that the content of the Report adopts this new structure; therefore, some analyses and series that were regularly included will not necessarily be in each issue. However, the statistical annex that accompanies the publication of the Report will continue to present the series that were traditionally included, regardless of whether or not they are part of the content of the Report. In this way we expect to contribute in a more comprehensive way to the study and analysis of the stability of the Colombian financial system. Executive Summary During the first half of 2015, the main advanced economies showed a slow recovery on their growth, while emerging economies continued with their slowdown trend. Domestic demand in the United States allowed for stabilization on its average growth for the first half of the year, while other developed economies such as the United Kingdom, the euro zone, and Japan showed a more gradual recovery. On the other hand, the Chinese economy exhibited the lowest growth rate in five years, which has resulted in lower global dynamism. This has led to a fall in prices of the main export goods of some Latin American economies, especially oil, whose price has also responded to a larger global supply. The decrease in the terms of trade of the Latin American economies has had an impact on national income, domestic demand, and growth. This scenario has been reflected in increases in sovereign risk spreads, devaluations of stock indices, and depreciation of the exchange rates of most countries in the region. For Colombia, the fall in oil prices has also led to a decline in the terms of trade, resulting in pressure on the dynamics of national income. Additionally, the lower demand for exports helped to widen the current account deficit. This affected the prospects and economic growth of the country during the first half of 2015. This economic context could have an impact on the payment capacity of debtors and on the valuation of investments, affecting the soundness of the financial system. However, the results of the analysis featured in this edition of the Report show that, facing an adverse scenario, the vulnerability of the financial system in terms of solvency and liquidity is low. The analysis of the current situation of credit institutions (CI) shows that growth of the gross loan portfolio remained relatively stable, as well as the loan portfolio quality indicators, except for microcredit, which showed a decrease in these indicators. Regarding liabilities, traditional sources of funding have lost market share versus non-traditional ones (bonds, money market operations and in the interbank market), but still represent more than 70%. Moreover, the solvency indicator remained relatively stable. As for non-banking financial institutions (NBFI), the slowdown observed during the first six months of 2015 in the real annual growth of the assets total, both in the proprietary and third party position, stands out. The analysis of the main debtors of the financial system shows that indebtedness of the private corporate sector has increased in the last year, mostly driven by an increase in the debt balance with domestic and foreign financial institutions. However, the increase in this latter source of funding has been influenced by the depreciation of the Colombian peso vis-à-vis the US dollar since mid-2014. The financial indicators reflected a favorable behavior with respect to the historical average, except for the profitability indicators; although they were below the average, they have shown improvement in the last year. By economic sector, it is noted that the firms focused on farming, mining and transportation activities recorded the highest levels of risk perception by credit institutions, and the largest increases in default levels with respect to those observed in December 2014. Meanwhile, households have shown an increase in the financial burden, mainly due to growth in the consumer loan portfolio, in which the modalities of credit card, payroll deductible loan, revolving and vehicle loan are those that have reported greater increases in risk indicators. On the side of investments that could be affected by the devaluation in the portfolio of credit institutions and non-banking financial institutions (NBFI), the largest share of public debt securities, variable-yield securities and domestic private debt securities is highlighted. The value of these portfolios fell between February and August 2015, driven by the devaluation in the market of these investments throughout the year. Furthermore, the analysis of the liquidity risk indicator (LRI) shows that all intermediaries showed adequate levels and exhibit a stable behavior. Likewise, the fragility analysis of the financial system associated with the increase in the use of non-traditional funding sources does not evidence a greater exposure to liquidity risk. Stress tests assess the impact of the possible joint materialization of credit and market risks, and reveal that neither the aggregate solvency indicator, nor the liquidity risk indicator (LRI) of the system would be below the established legal limits. The entities that result more individually affected have a low share in the total assets of the credit institutions; therefore, a risk to the financial system as a whole is not observed.
