Abstract:
Abstract During the communist period, the Lemko community did not have its own separate ethnic organization in Poland. In the USA, the Lemkos were able to conduct social and political activities without any obstacles. Even before World War II, two important organizations were established: the Russophile Lemko-Soyuz and the Ukrainophile Organization for the Defense of Lemkivshchyna in America. The social and political transformation initiated by the elections of June 1989 changed the situation of national and ethnic minorities. The period of political transformation in Poland also activated the Lemkos, who also took advantage of these changes to formalize and develop their activities. The first postwar Lemko organization was the Lemko Association. As a counterbalance for Lemkos Association, Ukrainophiles created in Gorlice their own organization – Union of Lemkos. American activists also had to find their way in the new political circumstances. When the Soviet Union collapsed, not only did the ideological base of Lemko-Soyuz fall into ruin, but also its financial base. OOL found itself in a much better position than Lemko-Soyuz during the period of political transition in Eastern Europe. The anti-Moscow stance of the Ukrainianophile organization allowed it to remain credible and continue to fight for the interests of Ukraine. However, the organizations, both Polish and American, in their multifaceted activity still contribute to consolidation and preservation of Lemkos’ cultural identity and preservation of their traditions.

Abstract:
The aim of this article is to reconstruct the self-image of Lemkos – an ethnic group, originally from Transcarpathia, deported from their homeland after World War II. The data come from 34 ethnographic interviews conducted either in Lemko ethnolect (N=17) or in Polish (N=17). The analysis employed the methodology developed by Lublin School of Ethnolinguistics. It showed that there are four predominant profiles of Lemko identity: (1) Lemko – a victim of history, (2) Lemko – an exile, (3) An ethnic and cultural Lemko, (4) Lemko – a peasant.

Abstract:
In 1947, as the result of the Vistula Operation,Lemkos were resettled to the Western and NorthernTerritories of Poland, this making them abandon their materialpossessions which remained at their former domicile proneto devastation. Certain Lemkos resented those developmentsto the extent that following 1956 some returned to theirnative land, determined to save their tangible and intangibleculture. Amateur artistic projects were revived, and itwas decided that traces of Lemko tangible heritage wereto be taken care of. This led to the concept of creating anethnographic Lemko museum. In 1968, using Teodor Goczsfarmstead at Zyndranowa, a memento hall was created; itlater assumed the name of the Museum of Lemko Culture. The institution continuously faced challenges: it lackedfinancing and factual supervision for its operation. Despitethis, the Museum collection continued growing, and newbuildings were safeguarded for the purpose. The Museumscreators aimed not only at preserving and displaying tracesof Lemko tangible heritage, but also at maintaining bonds ofthe displaced Lemkos with their former homeland. Withtime, the Museum also began playing an important role inpreserving the Lemko ethnic identity.

Abstract:
Between Russia and Czechoslovakia: Lemko Rus’ Struggle for Political Independence in the Years 1918-1921 and International PoliticsThe events in Lemko Rus had, in the years 1918-1921, a subjective and political character, and were the result of Lemkos’ own initiatives and activities, and not just external influences. They proved to be the national maturation of the Lemko community. However, it cannot be said that the newly created Lemko councils aimed at or constituted their own Lemko state with the headquarters in the village of Florynka. It becomes clear after analysing the chronology of Lemko political postulates in the context of events in the regional and global plane. None of the subsequent stages of the process of specifying their nationality by the Lemkos was connected with the idea of a separate Lemko statehood. Formally speaking, i.e., from the perspective of law and international relations, the Lemko region first wanted to belong to the Russian state, then to Czechoslovakia, always strongly rejecting the notion of being part of the resurgent Poland and the then-created Ukraine. Czechoslovakia was not an alternative to Russia for Lemko politicians, but only a tactical necessity against the momentary, as it was believed, impossibility to implement the original Russian option. It was a case created by a coincidence of ad-hoc circumstances. Be the Lemkos’ own country in the national sense, that is, they met both the political and cultural criteria of belonging there, which were important to their community. The Czechoslovak option somehow forced, or rather made possible the second option – striving to create a local state with a wider formula than just the Lemko region, connecting all Rusyns living in Austria-Hungary, that is also those from Eastern Galicia, Bukovina and Hungary. Such a Carpatho-Ruthenian republic was supposed to be a substitute, necessary for formal reasons, as an autonomous element in the federal structure of the Czechoslovak state, and for political reasons, as a safeguard for the national aspirations of the such a Carpatho-Rusyn and a guarantee of their future unification with democratic Russia. While Russia, both tsarist and liberal, guided by its national doctrine, was willing to unconditionally include all Austro-Hungarian Ruthenians in its borders, including also westernmost Lemkos, Czechoslovak leaders wanted to bite only as much as they could chew economically and politically, i.e. – include only regions rich in cities or natural deposits. The poor and non-urbanized Lemko region was treated only as a convenient item in their subversive game of borders with Poland.

Abstract:
Lemko Language from a 30-Year Perspective
From the very moment the Lemko Association was established in 1989, the promotion of Lemko language usage, primarily through schooling, has been one of its most important statutory goals. The publication of the grammar of the Lemko language in 2000, preceded by preliminary descriptions by Miros³awa Chomiak, and soon also the Lemko-Polish and Polish-Lemko dictionary by Jaros³aw Horoszczak is recognized as an act of codification of the modern Lemko language. The paper presents various forms of linguistic activity of the Lemkos in their mother tongue (primarily in the area of mass- and media-communication: publication of original literary works and translations, magazines, Internet sites, radio programs, audiobooks, etc.) that have shaped the modern Lemko language over the past 30 years and have necessitated relevant corrections in its codification. As part of the language revitalization program, the spelling rules are currently being clarified and the most comprehensive monolingual dictionary of the Lemko language so far is ready for publication.

Abstract:
The article deals with the importance of Lemko folklore for the collective conducted by P. Cholovsky, the Honored Art Worker of Ukraine, Associate Professor of the Department of Folk Instruments and Musical Folklore at the Institute of Arts of the V. Stefanyk Precarpathian National University. The place of Lemko folklore in the Ukrainian musical and ethno-cultural space was described and multi-genre models of the choral repertoire, which is a vivid expression of the Lemko “soul”, were analyzed. The creative figure of P. Cholovsky as an arranger of Lemko songs and his creative work was investigated. The cultural heritage of the Lemko subethnos, widely presented in Ivano-Frankivsk, remains a “blank spot” in Ukrainian music regionalistics, Ukrainian musicology, as the merciless deportations of this group of the Ukrainian people have negatively impacted the elevation of their spiritual life. And although, such phenomena usually lead to the loss of roots or creative achievements, it is not the case with Lemkos who from the beginning have developed and cultivated their songs, dances, national costumes, etc. F. Kolessa, O. Rоzdolsky, O. Kolberg, V. Hnatyuk, Ya. Golovatsky resorted to the study of Lemko folklore. However, not so many scholars investigate this topic nowadays, in particular, there is no thorough research on the place of the Lemko song in the repertoire of Ivano-Frankivsk choir collectives. The first written mention of Lemko roots dates back to the 16th century. Lemkos are one of the multinational minorities of the Carpathian Region, who lived and worked on the hillsides of the Low, Middle and Western Beskyds. Today this territory belongs not only to Ukraine, but also to Poland and Slovakia. The Lemko culture is a sub-ethnic part of the Ukrainian folklore. Lemkos’ musical art synthesizes Polish, Slovak, Hungarian and Ukrainian cultures. To preserve the original artifacts of the Lemko culture and unite the scattered families, Lemko public organizations were founded in Galicia in the late 20th century. This process was facilitated by the positive changes in the political and cultural life of Ukraine, achieving the state’s independence in particular. In 1990, the center of the society “Lemkivshchyna” was created in Ivano-Frankivsk thanks to the support of the ardent patriot, pedagogue, linguist P. Pyrtei, and, in 1991, Lemkos of Kalush, Rozhnyativ, and Ivano-Frankivsk united into the regional social and cultural society “Lemkivshchyna”. The All-Ukrainian Society “Lemkivshchyna” appeared in Lviv in 2001. These societies became the centers of Lemkos’ cultural life on the territory of Carpathian region, and primarily artists gathered there, they contributed to the organization of creative groups – ensembles, choirs, music and choreographic groups. The “Beskyd” choir, founded in 1991 on the initiative of Ivanna Senko, the graduate of Petro Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine, teacher of Denys Sichynsky Music College of Ivano-Frankivsk, was among such artistic organizations. Orest Turko, who was also a Lemko descendant, became the conductor of the choir. Later on, “Beskyd” was given the title of “amateur folk choir” (1995) due to the persistent and hard work of the collective and its conductor and owing to their high performing level. At present, the “Beskyd” choir of Ivano-Frankivsk Region Society “Lemkivshchyna” is an active promoter of the Lemko song in the Carpathian region. Its creative and concert palette is quite extensive, it is well-known in Europe, it actively concerts in Ukraine and neighboring states. Thanks to the great creative potential and professionalism of Maestro P. Cholovsky, the Lemko song in the activity of the choir, became the light for the restoration of the Lemko culture, language and songs in the Carpathian region. The collective firmly states that the Lemko song is one of the greatest and most interesting strata of the Ukrainian folklore, which should occupy an honorary place in the folklore hierarchy.

Abstract:
Florynka Republic 1918-1921The main part of the article is a synthesis of the issues discussed by the author in his book Działalność polityczna Łemków na Łemkowszczyźnie 1918‑1921 [Political activity of the Lemkos in the Lemko Region in 1918‑1921]. The author presents successive phases of the activity of the Lemko elites who were inspired by the message expressed by Woodrow Wilson in his speech about the nations’ right to self-determination. The article quotes the demands formulated at national councils, reconstructs the structure of administration and government and demonstrates the connections between and the political agenda of the leaders who comprised the Ruthenian National Republic of the Lemkos. Furthermore, the author emphasizes the mutual attitudes between the Poles and the Lemkos in that period, as well as the restrictions imposed on the Lemko population and discusses how the Lemko Republic ended after its leaders were arrested and then acquitted several months later at a court trial. This synthesis is preceded by a contemporary introduction whose primary goal is to present the state of research that has been carried out since 1997.

Abstract:
Since at least the fourteenth century the Slavic ethnic minority population known as Polish Lemkos has claimed the northern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains as its homeland. Lemkos are part of a larger east Slavic population of Carpathian Rus' collectively known as Rusyns, who reside in the Lemko region (in Poland), the Prešov region (in Slovakia), and western Subcarpathian Rus' (in Ukraine) (see Figure I). Beyond the Carpathian homeland Rusyns live in Serbia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, and outside of Europe in the United States, Canada, and Australia (Magocsi 2005, 433; 2006, II). By the outset of the twentieth century in the Lemko Region, the term “Lemko” was gradually adopted as an ethnonym instead of “Rusyn.” Some Rusyns in lands other than Poland also choose to refer to themselves as Lemkos.

Abstract:
Computer applications can be described as largely rigid structures within which an information seeker must navigate in search of information - each screen, each transaction having underlying unique code. The larger the application, the higher the number of lines of code and the larger the size of the application executable. This study suggests an alternative pattern based approach, an approach driven by the information seeker. This alternative approach makes use of value embedded in intelligent patterns to assemble rules and logic constituents, numerous patterns aggregating to form a ‟virtual screen‟ based on the need of the information seeker. Once the information need is satisfied, the atomic rules and logic constituents dissipate and return to a base state. These same constituents are available, are reassembled and form the succeeding ‟virtual screen‟ to satisfy the following request. The pattern based approach makes use of multiple pattern ‟instances‟ to deliver functionality each pattern instance has a specific embedded value. Numbers of these patterns aggregate to drive the formation of a ‟virtual screen‟ built using patterns, each pattern referencing and associating (physical) atomic logic and spatial constituents. This is analogous to painting a picture using removable dots. The dots can be used to describe a fish, and then, once appreciation has been completed, the image is destroyed and the dots are returned to the palette. These same dots can later be reapplied to present the picture of a dog, if that is requested by the information seeker. In both pictures the same ‟dots‟ are applied and reused. The form of the fish and dog are retained as value embedded within the patterns, the dots are building blocks aligned using instructions within the patterns. This group classifies current solutions within the ‟Artefact-Pattern-Artefact‟ (APA) group and the pattern based approach within the ‟Pattern-Artefact-Pattern‟ (PAP) group. An overview and characteristics of each are discussed. The study concludes by presenting the results obtained when using a prototype developed using the PAP approach.<br>Thesis (Ph.D. (Information Technology))--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2011

Abstract:
Women athletes are more likely to tear their anterior cruciate ligament than their male counterparts. The female athlete has a complex system of steroid hormones that are continually changing. These sex hormones that fluctuate throughout each month may influence knee injuries, specifically the anterior cruciate ligament. The increased incidence in women is thought to be multifactorial, a combination of structural, anatomical, or biomechanical factors. The NCAA has reported that 75 percent of anterior cruciate ligament injuries are non-contact in competitive jumping or pivoting sports. In this study, the effects of the menstrual cycle on neuromuscular performance were investigated. Fifteen healthy females with regular menstrual cycles completed the various tests of this study for three phases of the menstrual cycle. All females were categorized as moderate or vigorous exercisers from an activity questionnaire. This study used a repeated measures experimental design; therefore, each participant served as her own control. The participants completed a series of two tests, including functional balance and fatigability. Each series was completed during three different phases of the menstrual cycle: menstruation, follicular and luteal. The participants used ovulation kits to predict the luteal phase. These phases were then verified through blood tests at each exercise session. The reaction time and balance test was performed with a BOSU wobble board placed on a force plate. A force platform was utilized to collect center of pressure data from the wobble board. The fatigue test protocol consisted of the participants performing in a pre-fatigue functional test, fatigue protocol and post-fatigue functional ability test. The functional test protocol consisted of two trials of four single-legged hop drills. It was hypothesized that all of the functional tests would have the greatest neuromuscular performance during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, and for all of the tests to have differences between the pre- and post-fatigue trials. However, there were no significant differences in the functional tests over the menstrual cycle. There were differences in fatigue in the forward hop and figure eight tests, but the affect of fatigue on performance did not differ across menstrual cycle phases.

Abstract:
“Watra” magazine is published by the Union of Lemkos in Poland. It represents the views of those Lemkos who consider themselves part of the Ukrainian nation and believe their language is a Ukrainian dialect as opposed to those Lemkos who claim to constitute a separate nation with a separate Lemko language. According to the editorial policy the magazine publishes texts in both standard Ukrainian and different versions of the Lemko dialect which allows to study the ongoing processes in the Lemko vernacular.

Abstract:
Platelet therapy remains one of the most effective treatments. The use of WBC-depleted platelet is now mandatory to prevent a variety of adverse effects caused by transfused WBC (white blood cell) contaminating platelet. One of the current centrifuge bowls, which has most advantage for donors, has to use a WBC-depletion filter to meet the standards of WBC contamination. Development of new centrifuge bowls is intended here with the aid of CFD to guide the design of better performances. The simulation is in two stages; the first is to elucidate the mechanism of WBC-contamination of the current bowl (trajectory of WBC, based on velocity field established), and the second is to simulate the performance of new bowls on reducing remaining WBC in platelet concentrate. Evaluation of new bowls with human blood is reported.

Abstract:
One of the drawbacks of classical hydraulic system models consists in the fact, that the simulation programs couple the hydraulic components by compressible joints. Since the compressibility of oil is very small, we get stiff differential equations. To avoid these difficulties stiff elastic couplings can be replaced by unilateral constraints. Examples for hydraulic components with unilateral behavior are check valves, cylinders with stop limits and fluid volumes, in which cavitation can occur. The resulting complementarity equations can be solved with a standard Lemke algorithm. Compared to conventional methods, this leads to a significant reduction of computing times.
