Abstract:
This essay uses the rubric of “trickster” to explore the narrative character of Solomon as presented in Kings. Using both the broader literary category and the specific comparand of the Lenape (Delaware) trickster, Wehixamukes, nuances of the biblical presentation are highlighted and seemingly disparate elements of the biblical Solomon character are seen as parts of a coherent whole.

Abstract:
Abstract The essay describes Carolee Schneemann's residence, a stone house constructed in 1750 by Huguenot settlers on land of the Munsee Lenape people, and its central role in her life and work from the early 1960s until her death in 2019. The essay gives particular attention to Schneemann's text “Parts of a Body House” (1957–67), a series of paragraphs composed over a decade that describe a network of biomorphic structures and multimedia environments. The essay argues that “Parts of a Body House” is a “nerve codex” by which to read the artist's life and work. The essay is derived in part from remarks the author delivered at the memorial service for Schneemann at Judson Memorial Church, New York, on 3 May 2019.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This master thesis discloses how studies in the music and methods associated with pianist, composer and educator Lennie Tristano (1919-1978) have led to the creation of new music.  Through transcription of some of Tristano’s most pivotal improvisations and compositions I have highlighted musical concepts e. g. melodic lines, vertical structures, superimposed harmony and meter that I have found idiosyncratic to him. Then I have alsoanalyzed Tristano’s approach to these concepts. Finally, to turn theory into practice I have composed études that treat the aforementioned concepts. Throughout the project, these études have evolved from exercise pieces to pieces of music, ready to be presented to an audience. The work has broadened my musical vocabulary and has given me new tools for music creation. It also has made me question my habitual paths to expression and helped me to a greater trust in my musical intuition. This thesis could be of interest for musicians and composers interested in improvised melodic line, and/or the music of Lennie Tristano and his associates.

Abstract:
This Thesis contains three essays on the economic behavior of individuals. The first essay, co-authored with Andreas Blume and Douglas DeJong is an experimental investigation into the contribution of cognition in a strategic setting where the goal is to coordinate by choosing different courses of action. Specifically, we study whether cognitive limits affect the ability of agents to achieve dispersion outcomes and; further, how these limits affect the means by which dispersion outcomes are attained. We find that in the self-play treatment when agents are allowed to play against themselves, dispersion outcomes are relatively easy to obtain; however, when paired with others, cognitive differences increase the difficulty in achieving a dispersion outcome. When we relax the cognitive constraints, the ability of participants to achieve dispersion outcomes increases to approximately the same level as those in the self-play treatment; further, the means by which dispersion outcomes are achieved does not differ from those in the self-play treatment. In the second essay I investigate how noise impacts incentives provided by contracts that are structured with option-style payoffs. Existing theory suggest that one cannot commit to not renegotiate based on the receipt of a non-contractible signal; however, others suggest that in the presence of a noise in the non-contractible signal may not result in partners wanting to renegotiate since the initial contract may still provide incentives for subsequent periods. Using an experimental economics approach I find that players who receive a perfect non-contractible signal do not put forth high effort in a subsequent period; however, the presence of noise in the signal may result in players continuing to put forth high effort in a subsequent period. A behavioral explanation is provided for these observations. In the final essay for which this Thesis is named, I employ a field study methodology to investigate the incremental role that social capital plays in both individual lending decisions and outcomes. I find that lenders are more likely to choose borrowers who have social capital; however, social capital does not impact the interest rate that borrowers pay or the rate of default.

This essay will describe the working method of wage subsidies at the Employment Service and provide an insight into how legal these decisions are in Västra Götalandslän. Through qualitative interviews, prosecutors at the Swedish Employment Service have described the process how a wage subsidy is taken at the employment service. In addition, Lennart Lundqvist's theory of "our public ethos" in which the paper sets the ethics of ethics to see how legal the process is in decision making. The conclusion was that the workforce's workforce could be further improved in order to be able to be more confident.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate the dossier and delegation selections’ pros and cons and examine how the Swedish Migration Agency, in collaboration with UNHCR, work to ensure impartiality and efficiency. The study is based on two theories: the main one is Lennart Lundquist’s theory of democratic and economic values, which we combine with Michael Lipsky’s theory of “street-level bureaucrats” with the bottom-up perspective. By interviewing six people, differently involved in the selection of quota refugees - experts as well as administrators and managers - we arrive at the result that there are both positive and negative parts of the selections and both methods are needed. Democratic and economic values make the foremost sense and we have found that the Swedish Migration Agency works in a way to find a balance between them. This study provides practical knowledge concerning challenges the people working within this area might meet and how they work to solve them. Hopefully, it will inspire people to do more research within this area of interests for a more effective, democratic and equitable selection of quota refugees in the future.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this book, Lenhard concentrates on the ways in which computers and simulation are transforming the established conception of mathematical modeling. His core thesis is that simulation modeling constitutes a new mode of mathematical modeling that is rearranging and inverting key features of the established conception. Although most of these new key features—such as experimentation, exploration, and epistemic opacity—have their precursors, the new ways in which they are being combined is generating a distinctive style of scientific reasoning. Lenhard also documents how simulation is affecting fundamental concepts of solution, understanding, and validation. He feeds these transformations back into the philosophy of science, thereby opening up new perspectives on longstanding oppositions. By combining historical investigations with practical aspects, the book is accessible for a broad audience of readers. Numerous case studies covering a wide range of simulation techniques are balanced with broad reflections on science and technology. Initially, what computers are good at is calculating—with a speed and accuracy far beyond human capabilities. Lenhard goes further and investigates the emerging characteristics of computer-based modeling, showing how this initially simple observation is creating a number of surprising challenges for the methodology and epistemology of science. These calculated surprises will attract both philosophers and scientific practitioners who are interested in reflecting on recent developments in science and technology.

Staley, Richard. Ether and Aesthetics in the Dialogue between Relativists and Their Critics in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198797258.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter pairs a study of ether and aesthetics in exploring dialogues between relativists and critics in two different periods. In the 1880s, Ernst Mach argued against absolute time and space but also offered new perspectives on aesthetic phenomena and speculated on a gravitational ether. In 1905, Albert Einstein announced the superfluity of the luminiferous ether, but by 1918 had described space without the ether as ‘unthinkable’. Responding to his friend H. A. Lorentz and critics Ernst Gehrke and Philipp Lenard, Einstein both used the literary form of a dialogue between a relativist and a critic and defined a new gravitational ether that might have disarmed criticism. Neither strategy was successful, however, and the chapter concludes with an examination of social and aesthetic dimensions of the environment of political debate, commercial publishing and disciplinary discussions that marked the emergence of relativity in the public sphere in the post-war period.

Rosa, Lastra. International Financial and Monetary Law. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780199671090.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book studies the international monetary and financial system from a legal perspective. The new edition has been renamed to reflect the book's breadth of coverage, which includes an in-depth study of central banking, a fresh look at supervision, regulation and crisis management after the global financial crisis and updated material on the law of the European Central Bank (and its responses to the twin banking and sovereign debt crisis in the eurozone), Banking Union, the law of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and work undertaken by international standard-setters, in particular the Financial Stability Board (FSB) and the Basel committee on Banking Supervision. The book is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on national developments, the second part deals with EU developments, and the third part examines international developments. There is a certain symmetry among the three parts of the book (which has been preserved in the second edition) each one of them commencing with a historical chapter, analyzing then the framework of the ‘monetary architecture’ and ending up with a consideration of the ‘financial architecture’ with regard to the functions of financial supervision (micro and macro) and surveillance, regulation, and crisis management, including lender of last resort and resolution.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Latin America is puzzling: Politicians often celebrate Latin America as a peaceful region. However, their slogans conflict with the reality of everyday life there. The region is characterised by a high level of violence and for years has consistently recorded one of the highest incidences of violence globally. Nevertheless, Latin America is also a place where innovative conflict resolution mechanisms take place. This book aims to contribute to analysis of the concurrence of widespread violence and innovative approaches to conflict resolution. It adopts an interdisciplinary perspective and highlights current dynamics based on single-case and comparative studies as well as conceptual discussions. Abstract:
Autonomous use of violence — whether for vengeance or in a feud — can potentially endanger community safety. The contributors to this volume depict the logic and narrative strategies used to validate the autonomous use of violence on the one hand, and examine attempts to delegitimise such violence through legal and religions norms on the other. In doing so, they focus on the endeavours of theologians to discredit violence used in a feud as a danger to the salvation of an individual’s soul and as a threat to everyone’s safety. As emotions are often cited as an argument for both justifying and rejecting violent action, some of the studies in this anthology also contribute to the history of emotions. This chapter discusses Women in the Holocaust. This book shows how men and women experienced the Holocaust differently owing to culturally defined gender roles, gender-related expectations, and differences in the way the Nazis treated them. The twenty-one original articles in this book present a wide spectrum of historical detail, personal narrative, short fiction, description of experiences, statistical evidence, and theoretical conclusions. They highlight women’s suffering and ingenuity, their mistakes, and their unfailing resilience in nurturing relationships, supporting others, and sacrificing everything for their children. They also tell the story of women’s professional versatility, courage, and even creativity in the face of a monstrous machinery of death.

Abstract:
The pathomechanism of spinal deformity development in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) has been related to the sagittal curvature of the spine. It is not known how the variations in the sagittal profile relates to the coronal deformity patterns in AIS. A total of 70 Lenke 1 and 50 Lenke 5 AIS patients were included retrospectively. A finite element (FE) model was developed for each spine where the sagittal spinal curvatures were modeled as 2D S shaped elastic rods. Transverse plane deformation patterns of these rods under physiological loading were determined and clustered based on their similarities. The patients’ characteristics, including the Lenke type, and the spinal measurements in these deformation pattern clusters were statistically compared. Three different axial deformation patterns were determined from the FE simulations of the 120 sagittal curves. Two axial groups were looped shaped in opposing directions (Group I and III) and one was lemniscate shaped (Group II). 94% of the patients in Groups I and II were Lenke 1 and 100% of Group III was Lenke 5. The position of the sagittal inflection point moved downward from Group I-III resulting in significantly different ratio of the arc lengths above and below the sagittal inflection points for Groups I, II and III (0.49±0.59, 1.15±0.44, and 3.22±1.8). A classification of idiopathic scoliosis, based on the biomechanics of S-shaped flexible rods deformation could distinguish between different coronal curve types. The geometrical parameters of the sagittal profiles in the axial deformation pattern groups were significantly different.

Abstract:
The precontact geology, surface hydrology, and forests of the Northwest Bronx are placed in the context of landuse by Lenni-Lenape Indians. In the colonial era the expansion of a nascent New York City reached the study area, with extensive forest loss during the Revolution. In the 1800s came railroad trackbeds, arterial roads, and the first residential construction. Van Cortlandt Park was gazetted in 1888, but its 2 golf courses removed large natural areas. The early 20th century brought loss of Kingsbridge Meadows and its unique saltmarsh habitat, offset by construction of 2 reservoirs. Parkways in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s concluded the major environmental insults to the study area. These changes are illustrated by 21 historical maps and images, and set the stage for description of the study area and its 7 subareas.

Abstract:
This chapter is devoted to capital and investments in the three groups of tablets found in the Vesuvian cities: the tablets of L. Caecilius Iucundus in Pompeii; those of Herculaneum; and the tablets of the Sulpicii (also known as the Murecine tablets) which have to do with transactions carried out in Puteoli. These contain almost no evidence of innovation; on the contrary, they bear witness to a wide range of economic activities and give much information on capital and investments. Among these investments, it is necessary to distinguish two categories: firstly, investments that involve lending money and charging interest, without the lender being directly involved in a given production process or business (this type of investment is discussed in the second part of the chapter); and secondly, investments that are to the contrary accompanied by direct involvement of the lender in production or in commercial activity (investments discussed in the third part of the chapter). The first part of the chapter studies the ways in which a group of freedmen might manage to amass a certain capital and to have investments. The final part is devoted to the dealings which Caecilius Iucundus had with the city of Pompeii.

Abstract:
Nanobubbles appearing on the interface between liquid and the hydrophobic substrate play an important role in various natural and industrial processes. The current study presents the MD simulations of surface nanobubbles on the liquid-solid interface, where the liquid phase consists of argon and dissolved neon, while the gaseous phase consists of neon and argon vapor. The interactions between all the particles are determined by the Lennard-Jones potential. The contact angle is studied as a function of the Lennard-Jones parameters for the liquid-solid and gas-solid interactions. Moreover, the influence of gas concentration on the system behavior is studied. The simulations are performed for the systems of tens nm in size, which contain up to 8 million molecules. The computations are accelerated using modern computational methods and algorithms as well as using high-performance hardware such as graphic processors.

Abstract:
Abstract The Mississippi Canyon 280-A platform, also known as Lena Guyed Tower located in 1,000 ft water depth in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), was successfully decommissioned and reefed in-place in 2020. To meet the regulatory requirements on offshore platform decommissioning, i.e. BSEE decommissioning requirements and the LDWF artificial reef program, an environmental study and an engineering study were performed to ensure that the platform decommissioning satisfies these critical requirements on environmental protection and operational safety. The environmental study revealed the abundance of marine lives residing on the tower and rare coral species only observed in deepwater region. This justified the environmental benefit of turning the tower into an on-site artificial reef and functioning as a vibrant marine life habitat at the end of its production service life. The engineering study on Lena decommissioning, as addressed in this paper, involved three (3) stages of engineering work: tower decommissioning concepts and feasibility study; selected concept definition; and detailed tower reef-in-place laydown (toppling) plan and design. High-level tower reef-in-place criteria were set up in the early engineering stage as guidelines to the detailed laydown design, including specific project requirements on minimal environmental impact and safe offshore field operations. This engineering study relied heavily on multiple expert brainstorm sessions on various decommissioning concepts and options, and advanced structural modeling and computer simulations for assessment and design. A large number of tower structural models were developed to verify the plan and check various factors and risk scenarios that may affect the tower performance in different stages of the decommissioning operation. Advanced analytical techniques were developed and applied, which feature the driving mechanisms of the problem such as soil-structure-interaction, guyline tension, structural member contact and sliding, large displacement simulation, structural collapse, and hydrodynamics. Stringent quality assurance and testing procedures were followed to ensure the credibility of developed analytical techniques and engineering technologies. The most challenging part that differentiates the decommissioning engineering from typical structural design is how to properly estimate the platform in-situ "as-is" condition and carry out the assessment as such to make a regulatory compliant, feasible, reliable, and efficient plan. Therefore, engineering judgment had to go beyond the scope covered by existing industry codes and standards, and rely on the most recent advances in industry research and technology. This engineering study resulted in a clearly defined tower decommissioning plan and procedure, backed up with contingency plans for various risk scenarios and potential deviations in field operation due to limitations and/or uncertainties. The decommissioning plan minimized the offshore field construction scope and risk, and kept the required tower laydown pull loads within the capacity range of typical GoM offshore tugboats. As a result, the Lena tower was successfully laid down on seafloor in an anticipated reefing position, with no major deviations from the plan. Lena Guyed Tower is the first deepwater compliant structure decommissioned. This decommissioning effort may provide the most valuable information and lessons learned to the industry for similar decommissioning and abandonment operations in the future.

Abstract:
Examination of metastable states of fluids provides important information pertinent to cavitation and homogeneous nucleation. Homogeneous nucleation, in particular, is an important topic of research. Molecular Dynamics simulation is a well-endorsed method to simulate metastabilitites, as they are limited to mesoscopic scales of length and time and this life-time is essentially zero on a laboratory time scale. In the present study, a molecular dynamics code has been used in conjunction with MOLDY to investigate phase change in a Lennard-Jones liquid. The Lennard-Jones atoms were subjected to different temperatures at various number densities and the pressure was recorded for each case. The appearance of a change of phase is characterized by the formation of clusters or formation of voids as described by the radial distribution function.

Download (2417Kb) | Vorschau Abstract Biofilm-like properties can form on sea surfaces, but an understanding of the underlying processes leading to the development of these biofilms is not available. We used approaches to study the development of biofilm-like properties at the sea surface, i.e. the number, abundance and diversity of bacterial communities and phytoplankton, the accumulation of gel-like particles and dissolved tracers. During the expedition POS537 we used newly developed and free drifting mesocosms and performed incubation experiments. With these approaches we aim to investigate the role of light and UV radiation as well as the microbes themselves, which lead to the formation of biofilms. With unique microbial interactions and photochemical reactions, sea surface biofilms could be biochemical reactors with significant implications for ocean and climate research, e.g. with respect to the marine carbon cycle, diversity of organisms and oceanatmosphere interactions.
