Hübscher, Iris. "Preschoolers' pragmatic development: how prosody and gesture lend a helping hand." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/593503.

Abstract:
While previous research on language development has highlighted the facilitating role of gesture (mainly deictic gesture) in children’s early access to meaning, little is known about the possible facilitating role of prosody and also of co-speech gestures in children’s pragmatic development in the preschool years. Previous work on developmental pragmatics has focused on the acquisition of morphosyntactic and lexical forms, and there is a need to adopt a more integrative multimodal perspective. The overarching aim of this thesis is to experimentally investigate, through a set of cross-sectional studies with preschool children (3- to 5-year-olds), whether prosodic and gestural cues serve as pragmatic precursors in the development of two key pragmatic phenomena, namely knowledge state (i.e., commitment to the status of information) and politeness (e.g., broadly speaking, adjusting one’s language). The first study uses a forced-choice paradigm to investigate preschool children’s understanding of another speaker’s knowledge state, presented in audio only, video only and audio-visual formats. Results show that overall children perform significantly better in detecting a speaker’s uncertainty when they have gestural cues present, and, importantly, the younger children were significantly better in detecting a speaker’s uncertainty when listening to a speaker’s intonation contour as compared to uncertainty expressed through a lexical epistemic adverb. The second study analyzes children’s (and adults’) multimodal expression of their knowledge state through an object guessing game by evaluating their production of prosodic, gestural and lexical cues and additionally assessing their self-assessment of their knowledge state. Results show that while preschool children are not yet able to self-report on their knowledge state, in the younger group, children encode their knowledge state through prosodic and gestural means only. And only in the older age group do children start to use a few lexical markers to signal their uncertainty. The third study uses a forced-choice paradigm to assess children’s understanding of a speaker’s politeness presented in audio only, video only and audio-visual formats. Results show that 3-year-old children detect a speaker’s polite stance significantly more through facial cues and intonation, highlighting children’s early ability to extract meaning from intonation when lexical cues are kept the same. Finally, the fourth study explores children’s multimodal production of politeness in semi-spontaneous requests in different sociopragmatic situations. Results show that regardless of the age group, children marked politeness through fine-grained gestural and prosodic means when producing requests to an adult with high social distance as compared to a classmate with low social distance, and this also depends on the cost of the request. Altogether the results of these studies demonstrate that children’s early pragmatic comprehension and expressive abilities rely strongly on prosodic and gestural marking, developing well before children master lexical and morphosyntactic markers. More specifically, the four studies presented in this thesis bring forth evidence that both prosody and co-speech gestures play a precursor role in children’s pragmatic development of knowledge state and politeness. Ultimately, the thesis highlights the importance of approaching the study of children’s pragmatic development from a multimodal perspective.

Kirberger, Michael. "Defining a Molecular Mechanism for Lead Toxicity via Calcium-Binding Proteins." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2011. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/chemistry_diss/53.

Full text
Abstract:
Essential metals like Ca2+ and Zn2+ play critical roles in biological processes through protein interactions. Conversely, non-essential metals (e.g., Gd3+ and Pb2+) also interact with proteins, often with toxic effects. Molecular metal toxicity is assumed to be due to ionic displacement, and studies have demonstrated that Pb2+ replaces Zn2+, Ca2+ and other essential metals in proteins. The focus of this work was to compare protein Ca2+ and Pb2+ -binding sites and to investigate a mechanism of Pb2+ toxicity in Ca2+-binding proteins, particularly the intracellular trigger protein calmodulin (CaM) which binds four Ca2+ ions and interacts with numerous molecular targets via Ca2+-induced conformational change. A statistical analysis of PDB structural data for Pb2+ and Ca2+-binding (EF-hand and non-EF-hand) proteins revealed fewer binding ligands in Pb2+ sites (4 ± 2), than non-EF-Hand (6 ± 2) and EF-Hand (7 ± 1) Ca2+-binding sites. Pb2+ binds predominantly with sidechain Glu (38.4%), which is less prevalent in both non-EF-Hand (10.4%) and EF-Hand (26.6%) sites. Interestingly, analyses of proteins where Pb2+ replaces Ca2+ (calmodulin) or Zn2+ (5-aminolaevulinic acid dehydratase) revealed structural changes presumably unrelated to ionic displacement. These results suggested that Pb2+ adopts diverse binding geometries and that opportunistic binding outside of known Ca2+-binding sites may play a role in molecular metal toxicity. Ca2+-binding affinities (Kd) using phenylalanine and tyrosine fluorescence were found to be 1.15 ± 0.68 X 10-5 M and 2.04 ± 0.02 X 10-6 M for the N- and C-terminal domains, respectively. The Kd for Pb2+-binding in the N-terminal domain, 1.40 ± 0.30 X 10-6 M, was 8-fold higher than Ca2+. Binding of Pb2+ in the C-terminal domain produced a biphasic response with Kd values 7.34 ± 0.95 X 10-7 M and 1.93 ± 0.32 X 10-6 M, suggesting a single higher affinity Pb2+-binding site in the C-terminal domain with nearly equivalent affinity for the remaining sites. Competitive effects of Pb2+ added to Ca2+-loaded CaM were examined using multiple NMR techniques. Pb2+ was found to displace Ca2+ only in the N-terminal domain, however structural/dynamic changes were observed in the central helix apparently due to Pb2+-binding in secondary sites. These data supported our hypothesis that CaM structure and function is altered by opportunistic Pb2+-binding.

Cederström, Björn. "A multi-prism lens for hard X-Rays." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Fysik, 2002. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-3423.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes a new type of refractive lens for hardx-rays. It is shown that a linear array of prisms, slightlyinclined with respect to the optical axis, will form a linefocus at a certain distance from the lens. Hence, the namemulti-prism lens. These lenses are free from sphericalaberration and are similar to planar parabolic compoundrefractive lenses in terms of performance. However, theydistinguish themselves in that only planar surfaces need to befabricated. A special feature is that the focal length can beeasily varied by adjusting the inclination angle. Theoretical calculations, based on geometrical and physicaloptics, are used to characterize the lenses. Aberrations arediscussed, as well as the sensitivity to fabricationimperfections, and insufficient flatness is identified as apotential problem. Ray-tracing is used to test theapproximations and assumptions used in the theory. Applicationsin x-ray microscopy and mammography are discussed. Lenses have been made of beryllium, silicon, epoxy anddiamond using different methods. Results from measurements ofsurface roughness and figure error show that the imperfectionsof the silicon and epoxy lenses should have a small impact, while the beryllium lenses should suffer from strongscattering. Experiments were performed at the EuropeanSynchrotron Radiation Facility and sub-µm focal linewidths, close to theoretical expectations, were measured forsilicon and epoxy lenses at 30 keV and 14 keV, respectively.Insertion gains up to 40 were reached. Two crossed lenses wereused to obtain focusing in two dimensions and a point focus. The smallest measured focal spot size was 1.0 µm by 5 .4µm, and an insertion gain exceeding 100 was achieved usingepoxy lenses. The diamond lenses suffered from voids in the materialformed in the chemical vapor deposition process, butnevertheless provided focal lines less than 2 µm in width, albeit at at relatively low insertion gain of 13. Due to theirexcellent thermal properties, these lenses are put forward ascandidates for optics at the next generationultra-high-intensity synchrotron beams and x-ray free electronlasers. Farooki, Masuma Zareen. "The southern engine of growth and hard commodity prices : does China lead to disruptive development." Thesis, Open University, 2009. http://oro.open.ac.uk/54647/.

Full text
Abstract:
The 2003 to 2008 commodity boom was the longest period of rising commodity prices seen since the Second World War. The main drivers of base metal prices were increasing Demand from China, Inflexible Supply from within the Global Mining Industry and the increased participation of Financial Actors in commodity markets. This research examines the role of the main drivers in the 2003 to 2008 commodity boom, and their impact on the future behaviour of hard-commodity prices. The persistence of these drivers, despite the interruption due to the financial crisis towards the end of 2008, leads us to conclude that the Boom is the start of an expansionary phase of a commodity Super Cycle. China's increase in base-metals consumption has directly led to demand disruptions in the global commodity markets. Indirectly, it has affected the global mining sector and influenced a change in perception of financial actors. China's growth has been a disruptive element in traditional commodity price behaviour. Given the commodity pessimism since the 1950s, the current rise in commodity prices has implications for development policy. The orthodoxy of deteriorating terms of trade of commodities relative to manufactures, price volatility, the low income elasticity of demand and the nature of the global mining industry, are all challenged by the rising trend in commodity prices. Hard-commodity-exporting countries have an opportunity to benefit from the current and expected growth of commodity prices in the medium term. For base-metal ore abundant countries, commodity optimism may well define the next fifty years of global economic development.

Full text
Abstract:
Contaminated sediments pose a direct risk to sediment fauna and have the potential to affect other benthic assemblages. Disturbances that resuspend and remobilise contaminants may impact on filter-feeding, hard-substrate organisms that live immediately above sediments. This thesis uses laboratory and field manipulations to examine the impact of metal-contaminated sediments on sediment fauna and hard-substrate fauna simultaneously. It also compares the response of assemblages to metal contamination in a temperate and polar ecosystem. Simulated resuspension exposures in the laboratory indicated that contaminated sediments have the potential to affect hard-substrate organisms. Spirorbid polychaetes responded to both aqueous metals and to resuspended, particulate-bound metals. Impacts on hard-substrate fauna were however, not observed in manipulative field experiments using metal-spiked sediments. The recruitment and cover of hard-substrate organisms were either not affected or enhanced above contaminated sediments. In contrast, metal contamination had direct negative effects on sediment fauna, with a reduction in the abundance of most taxa. Results suggest that sediment fauna may interact with hard-substrate fauna through physical and/or biological mechanisms. In a reciprocal transplant experiment, established Antarctic hard-substrate assemblages were also unaffected by contaminant concentrations at an impacted site. Overall, metal-contaminated sediments are unlikely to pose as serious a threat to hard-substrate fauna as they do to sediment fauna. Contaminated sediments are not restricted to industrialised regions, and human activities in Antarctica have resulted in localised contamination near research stations. Although Antarctic assemblages are thought to be more sensitive than temperate assemblages to contaminants, few studies have explicitly examined this. Little evidence was found to support the theory that Antarctic assemblages are more susceptible to contaminated sediments. The response of Antarctic and temperate assemblages in the field to metal-contaminated sediments over a 10-11 month period was comparable. Responses were of a similar magnitude, despite differences in the composition of assemblages. In 10-d toxicity tests, the mortality of a common Antarctic hard-substrate organism was relatively insensitive to aqueous Cu, Zn and Pb. These results suggest that using current sediment quality guidelines from Australia may be a useful screening tool to assess the risk associated with contaminated sediments in Antarctica.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to discuss conducting technique in relation to real-time communication of Vamp, Safety-Bars and Lead-Ins through left-hand gestures within the context of opera and musical theatre. The research aims to develop a codified set of gestures suitable for the left-hand. It will explore and analyse left-hand gestures which are commonly used, but not yet codified, and the importance in which the preparatory beat plays a role in communicating the Vamp and Lead-In. This research also aims to establish a framework for conductors to create their own left-hand gestures and better understand musical structure used in Opera and Musical Theatre. The new gestures developed through research into visual and body languages (such as sign languages) as well as body movement (sound painting). The gestures will be tested through one artistic project, with three sections, then analysed using methods of qualitative inquiry. The paper is narrative based in its structure; with the reader guided through each topic by the last. The introduction sets up the main idea for this thesis, then each section is guided by these elements. The research questions and aims were formed because of the available literature; thus, they appear after the theory chapter.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This project seeks to clarify the complex interrelation of utopia and nostalgia in post World War II German literature, as the nineteen sixties student protest movement develops into what has become known as the 'New Subjectivity' of the nineteen seventies. The introductory chapter frames the historical context of this development, problematizing the idea of '1968' as its climax or turning point, while establishing the interrelationship of the concepts of utopia and nostalgia as the principal methodological and interpretative foil for the literary readings that follow. In three subsequent chapters I propose close readings of this theme in Peter Schneider's Lenz (1973), Hans Magnus Enzensberger's Der kurze Sommer der Anarchie (1972), and Berward Vesper's Die Reise (1977). These, I argue, texts demonstrate a trajectory of utopian thinking toward nostalgic reflection that exposes a dialectical tension between utopia and nostalgia. Through their literary texts as well as their essays in one another's periodical publications, such as the Voltaire Flugschriften and Kursbuch, the three authors address this tension as a common experience of the transitional period between the sixties student protest movement and the dawn of the 'New Subjectivity' of the seventies. I read Lenz as road narrative that mobilizes the metaphor of the road as the locus of the utopia-nostalgia dynamic; the road is a transitional space that embodies the uncertainty of the post-revolutionary moment when reflective nostalgia seems to replace the disillusioned utopia. Der kurze Sommer der Anarchie engages the literary discourses of utopia and nostalgia via the documentary form, after its pre-1968

Simpson, Inga Caroline. "Lesbian detective fiction : the outsider within." Queensland University of Technology, 2008. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/20120/.

Full text
Abstract:
Lesbian Detective Fiction: the outsider within is a creative writing thesis in two parts: a draft lesbian detective novel, titled Fatal Development (75%) and an exegesis containing a critical appraisal of the sub-genre of lesbian detective fiction, and of my own writing process (25%). Creative work: Fatal Development -- It wasn’t the first time I’d seen a dead body, but it didn’t seem to get any easier. -- When Dirk and Stacey discover a body in the courtyard of their Brisbane woolstore apartment, it is close friend and neighbour, Kersten Heller, they turn to for support. The police assume Stuart’s death was an accident, but when it emerges that he was about to take legal action against the woolstore’s developers, Bovine, Kersten decides there must be more to it. Her own apartment has flooded twice in a month and the builders are still in and out repairing defects. She discovers Stuart was not alone on the roof when he fell to his death and the evidence he had collected for his case against Bovine has gone missing. Armed with this knowledge, and fed up with the developer’s ongoing resistance to addressing the building’s structural issues, Kersten organises a class action against Bovine. Kersten draws on her past training as a spy to investigate Stuart’s death, hiding her activities, and details of her past, from her partner, Toni. Her actions bring her under increasing threat as her apartment is defaced, searched and bugged, and she is involved in a car chase across New Farm. Forced to fall back on old skills, old habits and memories return to the surface. When Toni discovers that Kersten has broken her promise to leave the investigation to the police, she walks out. The neighbouring – and heritage-listed – Riverside Coal development site burns to the ground, and Kersten and Dirk uncover evidence of a network of corruption involving developers and local government officials. After she is kidnapped in broad daylight, narrowly escaping from the boot of a moving car, Kersten is confident she is right, but with Toni not returning her calls, and many of the other residents selling up, including Dirk and Stacey, Kersten begins to question her judgment. In a desperate attempt to turn things around, Kersten calls on an old Agency contact to help prove Bovine was involved in Stuart’s death, her kidnapping, and ongoing corruption. To get the evidence she needs, Kersten plays a dangerous game: letting Bovine know she has uncovered their illegal operations in order to draw them into revealing themselves on tape. Hiding alone in a hotel room, Kersten is finally forced to confront her past: When Mirin didn’t come home that night, I was ready to go out and find her myself, disappear, and start a new life together somewhere far away. Instead they pulled me in before I could finish making arrangements, questioned me for hours, turned everything around. It was golden child to problem child in the space of a day. This time, she’s determined, things will turn out differently. Exegesis: The exegesis traces the development of lesbian detective fiction, including its dual origins in detective and lesbian fiction, to compare the current state of the sub-genre with the early texts and to establish the dominant themes and tropes. I focus particularly on Australian examples of the sub-genre, examining in detail Claire McNab’s Denise Cleever series and Jan McKemmish’s A Gap in the Records, in order to position my own lesbian detective novel between these two works. In drafting Fatal Development, I have attempted to include some of the political content and complexity of McKemmish’s work, but with a plot-driven narrative. I examine the dominant tropes and conventions of the sub-genre, such as: lesbian politics; the nature of the crime; method of investigation; sex and romance; and setting. In the final section, I explain the ways in which I have worked within and against the subgenre’s conventions in drafting a contemporary lesbian detective novel: drawing on tradition and subverting reader expectations. Throughout the thesis, I explore in detail the tradition of the fictional lesbian detective as an outsider on the margins of society, disrupting notions of power and gender. While the lesbian detective’s outsider status grants her moral agency and the capacity to achieve justice and generate change, she is never fully accepted. The lesbian detective remains an outsider within. For the lesbian detective, working within a system that ultimately discriminates against her involves conflict and compromise, and a sense of double-play in being part of two worlds but belonging to neither. I explore how this double-consciousness can be applied to the lesbian writer in choosing whether to write for a mainstream or lesbian audience.

Inksetter, Hamish. "Perceptions of Evil: A Comparison of Moral Perspectives in Nazi Propaganda and Anti-Nazi Literature." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/31917.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how the concept of evil was understood by opposing German perspectives during the era of National Socialist rule (1933-1945). The rise of Nazism in Germany marked a period of massive political upheaval wherein the National Socialist government encouraged the masses to view the world in terms of a great struggle between forces of good and evil. This was the central theme of their propaganda, which zealously encouraged racialist beliefs in the popular consciousness, and was based on assumptions of German superiority and Jewish evil. Despite Hitler's apparent success in creating an obedient nation, a significant number of Germans opposed his rule, amongst whom a small group of writers expressed their discontent through creative fiction. Through a comparison of the worldviews communicated through political propaganda and anti-Nazi literature, it is revealed that the crux of the divide between their opposing perspectives hinged on the meaning of evil. Since evil is a concept with many meanings, this thesis approaches the subject thematically. The comparison begins by focusing on the perception of evil as an all-corrupting force that had taken hold of Germany, followed by an exploration of how power and brutality were understood, ending with a comparison of views on how the struggle between good and evil took place on both a social and individual level. In addition to demonstrating the subjectivity of moral perspective during a tumultuous period of the recent past, this research reveals how the struggle against Nazism existed as a conflict of ideas. Moreover, the comparison of cultural sources (including Nazi art, visual propaganda, written texts such as Mein Kampf, and anti-Nazi creative fiction) demonstrates the value of art as a tool for conducting historical enquiry. Since the legacy of the Third Reich continues to directly influence modern perceptions of evil, exploring how evil was understood according to contemporary Germans – from both pro and anti-Nazi perspectives – is of particular historical interest.

Martin, Jocelyn S. "Re/membering: articulating cultural identity in Philippine fiction in English." Doctoral thesis, Universite Libre de Bruxelles, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2013/ULB-DIPOT:oai:dipot.ulb.ac.be:2013/210163.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines how Philippine (or Filipino) authors emphasise the need for articulating or “re/membering” cultural identity. The researcher mainly draws from the theory of Caribbean critic, Stuart Hall, who views cultural identity as an articulation which allows “the fragmented, decentred human agent” to be considered as one who is both “subject-ed” by power but/and one who is capable of acting against those powers (Grossberg 1996 [1986]: 157, emphasis mine). Applied to the Philippine context, this writer argues that, instead of viewing an apparent fragmented Filipino identity as a hindrance to “defining” cultural identity, she views the “damaged” (Fallows 1987) Filipino history as a the material itself which allows articulation of identity. Instead of reducing the cultural identity of a people to what-they-could-have-been-had-history-not-intervened, she puts forward a vision of identity which attempts to transfigure these “damages” through the efforts of coming-to-terms with history. While this point of view has already been shared by other critics (such as Feria 1991 or Dalisay 1998:145), the author’s contribution lies in presenting re/membering to describe a specific type of articulation which neither permits one to deny wounds of the past nor stagnate in them. Moreover, re/membering allows one to understand continuous re-articulations of “new” identities (due to current migration), while putting an “arbitrary closure” (Hall) to simplistic re-articulations which may only further the “lines of tendential forces” (such as black or brown skin bias) or hegemonic practices.

Written as such (with a slash),“re/membering” encapsulates the following three-fold meaning: (1) a “re-membering”, to indicate “a putting together of the dismembered past to make sense of the trauma of the present” (Bhabha 1994:63); as (2) a “re-membering” or a re-integration into a group and; as (3) “remembering” which implies possessing “memory or … set [ting] off in search of a memory” (Ricoeur 2004:4). As a morphological unit, “re/membering” designates, the ways in which Filipino authors try to articulate cultural identity through the routes of colonisation, migration and dictatorship.

The authors studied in this thesis include: Carlos Bulosan, Bienvenido Santos, N.V.M. Gonzalez, Nick Joaquin, Frank Sionil José, Ninotchka Rosca, Jessica Hagedorn, and Merlinda Bobis. Sixty-years separate Bulosan’s America is in the Heart (1943) from Hagedorn’s Dream Jungle (2003). Analysis of these works reveals how articulation is both difficult and hopeful. On the one hand, authors criticize the lack of efforts and seriousness towards articulation of cultural identity as re/membering (coming to terms with the past, fostering belonging and cultivating memory). Not only is re/membering challenged by double-consciousness (Du Bois 1994), dismemberment and forgetting, moreover, its necessity is likewise hard to recognize because of pain, trauma, phenomena of splitting, escapist attitudes and preferences for a “comfortable captivity”.

On the other hand, re/membering can also be described as hopeful by the way authors themselves make use of literature to articulate identity through research, dialogue, time, reconciliation and re-creation. Although painstaking and difficult, re/membering is important and necessary because what is at stake is an articulated Philippine cultural identity. However, who would be prepared to make the effort?

------

Human-machine Interfaces (HMI), also known as consumer interface (CI) or user interface (UI), is a medium for interaction between systems and users, and information. The HMI implemented the conversion between internal forms of information and acceptable forms of human. The HMI exists in the areas involved in human-computer interaction. A good HMI design should trend to user-center to achieve practicality and convenience. In general, the HMI is a machine including hardware and software. The software of the HMI is responsible for the communication of information. The hardware of the HMI contains input and output devices. The input devices provide the user operation interface that includes buttons, switches, and voice control. The output devices compose a display machine to respond to the user’s control. The display machine includes display methods, color, size, text, arrangement, sound, vibration. The paper presents a novel HMI, electronic glove, to simulate the general gestures to control the LED lighting. The electronic glove uses the combination of the bend sensors and the speed sensors to identify the general control of the user’s gestures and then the family peripherals. The study provides for a number of controls to meet the actual needs of users, and make the HMI becomes more interesting.

For this, organizational factors, specificallysize, as an inertial force, and slack, indicatingresource availability, are observed as moderating forces. The analysis encompasses a multinational sample across 18 countries from 14 different sectors. In total, 1,318 firm-year observations provide the basis for analysis, covering data between 2001 and 2014.CEO narcissism is measured through an unobtrusive method, while the ASSET4 ESG scoreprovides the values for CSR performance.A positive relationship is found between CEO narcissism and the organization’s CSR performance. The negative moderating effect of firm size on the underlying relationship is supported by the findings, while no support is found for the hypothesized positive effect of slack. This study advances the upper echelons theory by examining narcissism, a thus far scantly chosen trait as a determining characteristic of the executive, and CSR as the firm outcome. The concept of managerial discretion also adds to the understanding of the focal relationship, while the value of considering country and sectorial factors is additionally highlighted.

Beggs, Clive B., Simon J. Shepherd, and Kevin G. Kerr. "Increasing the frequency of hand washing by healthcare workers does not lead to commensurate reductions in staphylococcal infection in a hospital ward." 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/584.

Full text
Abstract:
Hand hygiene is generally considered to be the most important measure that can be applied to prevent the spread of healthcare-associated infection (HAI). Continuous emphasis on this intervention has lead to the widespread opinion that HAI rates can be greatly reduced by increased hand hygiene compliance alone. However, this assumes that the effectiveness of hand hygiene is not constrained by other factors and that improved compliance in excess of a given level, in itself, will result in a commensurate reduction in the incidence of HAI. However, several researchers have found the law of diminishing returns to apply to hand hygiene, with the greatest benefits occurring in the first 20% or so of compliance, and others have demonstrated that poor cohorting of nursing staff profoundly influences the effectiveness of hand hygiene measures. Collectively, these findings raise intriguing questions about the extent to which increasing compliance alone can further reduce rates of HAI. In order to investigate these issues further, we constructed a deterministic Ross-Macdonald model and applied it to a hypothetical general medical ward. In this model the transmission of staphylococcal infection was assumed to occur after contact with the transiently colonized hands of HCWs, who, in turn, acquire contamination only by touching colonized patients. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of imperfect hand cleansing on the transmission of staphylococcal infection and to identify, whether there is a limit, above which further hand hygiene compliance is unlikely to be of benefit. The model demonstrated that if transmission is solely via the hands of HCWs, it should, under most circumstances, be possible to prevent outbreaks of staphylococcal infection from occurring at a hand cleansing frequencies <50%, even with imperfect hand hygiene. The analysis also indicated that the relationship between hand cleansing efficacy and frequency is not linear - as efficacy decreases, so the hand cleansing frequency required to ensure R0<1 increases disproportionately. Although our study confirmed hand hygiene to be an effective control measure, it demonstrated that the law of diminishing returns applies, with the greatest benefit derived from the first 20% or so of compliance. Indeed, our analysis suggests that there is little benefit to be accrued from very high levels of hand cleansing and that in most situations compliance >40% should be enough to prevent outbreaks of staphylococcal infection occurring, if transmission is solely via the hands of HCWs. Furthermore we identified a non-linear relationship between hand cleansing efficacy and frequency, suggesting that it is important to maximise the efficacy of the hand cleansing process.

The purpose of this study is to design the progressive addition hard contact lens (PAHCL) for myopic presbyopia along with weak astigmatism by using the multi-configuration function in ZEMAX optical design program to optimize the PAHCL that have four view ranges. The multi-configuration four view ranges are infinity, 1000mm, 600mm and 350mm. So, a person with myopic presbyopia as well as weak astigmatism can see far, middle, and near view after wearing PAHCL, which could correct the prescription of refraction power S-0.50/C-2.00×180° at the infinity and addition +2.00D at the near vision. The Modulation Transfer Function ( MTF ) can reach 0.6 at 30lp/mm and 0.2 at 100lp/mm.

The main of this research applies Six Sigma (DMAIC) and Taguchi method and orthogonal array to arrange the experiment on the Multiple Quality Characteristic for the Hard Contact Lens Posterior Surface improvement of the process parameters. There are five kinds of quality characteristics in Hard Contact Lens Posterior Surface : PV ( smaller is better ), RMS ( smaller is better ), thickness ( larger is better ), attrition ( larger is better), brightness ( larger is better ) and 8 controllable factors. The experiment with the L18(21×37) orthogonal array, adopts several theories of multiple quality characteristics that proposed by certain scholars to evaluate the results of the experiment. Then, we perform the confirmation experiment and compare the results. Finally, we obtain the optimal parameter conditions, A1B1C1D1E2F2G3H1. According to the analysis of benefits, the optimal parameters can reduce the quality loss of Hard Contact Lens Posterior Surface about 12%. In the future, we can extend the results to other research of Hard Contact Lens Preceding Surface.

The scientific hands-on activities in the kithen : “induction cooker” and“veritical saltwater led.” Abstract The scientific education nowadays particularly stress practical scientific hands-on activity. The subject matter of designed activities integrated with life closely. The content of the activity integrated scientific conceptions. Through subservient teaching of school and family activities ,it can effectively foster civil scientific interest and help them to obtain scientific knowledge through the process of operation. The investigator assorts with the correlative content of physics and chemistry in volume three of junior high school “electric current ,resistor, joule heat,” “Faraday Law,” and“electrolytic aqueous solution electricity.” and the basic competence of the grade 1-9 intergrated coordinated curricurlum With “inductioncooker”and“saltwater” the materials for daily use in the kitchen , the investigator designed two scientific hands-on activities, and demonstrated the teachers in and out of the science field ,and students’ parents ,and used questionaires to evaluate the effectiveness of the activities.Besides, since the physics and chemistry in junior high school emphasizes “electrolytic aqueous solution electricity.” Therefore, focusing on comduct electricity attribute of vertical saltwater led,the investigator designed experiments to investigate further. The investigator looked forward to offering the reference for teachers to do subservient teaching and the parents to design activities. The research obtained the following results: 1.By applying the principle of designing induction cooker and coordinating related content of the science in junior high school and the basic competence of the grade 1-9 intergrated coordinated curricurlum, the research designs three scientific hands-on activities, “in search of magic cookpot,” “miraculous aluminum foil walfing show”and “unclose the cryptical veil of induction cooker. ” 2.Focusing on the advice finding of activity demo, two parts of scientific hands-on activity designed in the research pertectly come up to the principium “life, safe, funny, facitity, easiness, and significant”and are worthy of the reference for teachers to do subservient teaching and help to enconrage family activities. 3.The resistor of vertical saltwater led greatens along with “the reduction of length ,” “the accession of consistence”andt “he heighten of temperature”.But it does not have any relation to “vertical or horizontal put,” “floating or unfloating.” 4.The research conclusion of vertical saltwater led’s conduct electricity attribute can provide the reference in the future to design more creative and lively “liquor led”scientific hands-on activity and subservient teaching of “electrolytic aqueous solution conduct electricity.” Key words :scientific hands-on activity induction cooker veritical saltwater led

Plastic optical lenses replace the glass lens gradually with the rapid development of plastic photovoltaic industry, and occupy most of the global markets.Optical lenses product quality is required strictly. To achieve impact resistance and anti-wear effect, plastic optical lenses are required coatinghard film layers on its surface because of the low hardness and poor wear resistance. This study is to investigate the relationship between the surface of plastic lenses and precision optics hard coating process conditions. This is a multiple response optimization problem. This study combines the Pareto frontier, the desirability function, and cost factor to deal with multiple objective experimental designssubjected to a limited number of experiments. The design is approximated bya D-optimal algorithm. According to this design matrix, optical plastic lenses hard coating experiments were performed and analyzed. We thenidentify the design points ofPareto frontier, build approximating models of responses, and predict the responses of unexecuted design points. If fitted unexecuted design points are not dominated, we then addthem to thePareto frontier.Multiple objectives are converted to a value through desirability function and then divided by the manufacturing cost of each design points. An optimum design is the one with the maximum ratio. An optical plastic lens hard coating example is performed and presented. Our results provide decision makers a more flexible set of optimal solutions to improve the accuracy and reliability of the prediction.
