Abstract:
Plants under attack by pathogens and pests can mount a range of inducible defences, encompassing both chemical and structural changes. Although few reports exist, it appears that plants responding to pathogen or herbivore attack, or chemical defence elicitors, may produce progeny that are better able to defend themselves against attack, compared with progeny from unthreatened or untreated plants. To date, all research on transgenerational effects of biotic stress has been conducted on dicotyledenous plants. We examined the possibility that resistance induced by application of chemical defence elicitors to the monocot plant barley, could be passed on to the progeny. Plants were treated with acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) or saccharin, and grain harvested at maturity. Germination was unaffected in seed collected from plants treated with saccharin, while germination was reduced significantly in seed collected from ASM-treated plants. The subsequent growth of the seedlings was not significantly different in any of the treatments. However, plants from parents treated with both ASM or saccharin exhibited significantly enhanced resistance to infection by Rhynchosporium commune, despite not being treated with elicitor themselves. These data hint at the possibility of producing disease-resistant plants by exposing parent plants to chemical elicitors.

This study is based on positivism research philosophy and utilizes deductive approach. The study uses a dataset of 117 firms listed on KSE-100 Index from 2005 to 2012 to analyze the predictability of capital asset pricing model (CAPM) under different data frequencies and time frames. Six months daily data, in contradiction to the recommended five years monthly data, provides the best estimates. However, the performance of model can be regarded poor as it only explains 7.39% difference in returns.

Abstract:
With the increased use of CT, discovering incidental pancreatic lesions has become commonplace. Lesions in the distal pancreas lend themselves well to laparoscopic resection. We reviewed our experience with laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy. During the study period, 32 distal pancreatectomies were performed. There were 20 females. Mean patient age was 58.0 years (range, 23–83 years) and mean body mass index was 29.9 kg/m2 (range, 19.9–44.7 kg/m2). Technique was laparoscopic (25) or hand-assisted (seven) with one conversion in each group. The spleen was preserved in six patients (18.8%). Mean operative time overall was 238 minutes (range, 140–515 minutes); hand-assisted was 222 minutes and laparoscopic was 254 minutes. Estimated blood loss averaged 221 mL (range, 50–1800 mL). Mean tumor size was 2.7 cm (range, 0.6–7 cm). Tumor pathology was serous cystadenoma (10), neuroendocrine tumor (six), mucinous cystic neoplasm (four), intrapapillary mucinous neoplasm (four), adenocarcinoma (three), other (four), and solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (one). Mean length of stay was 5 days (range, 3–11 days). Complications were pancreatic fistula (six), wound infection (two), pulmonary embolism (one), pancreatitis (one), myocardial infarction (one), postoperative bleed from combined laparoscopic bilateral oophorectomy (one), and pancreatic stump staple line bleed requiring reoperation (one). There were no perioperative deaths. All pancreatic fistulas resolved with conservative management.

Abstract:
Investigations into the nature of the activity of gaming have been made difficult by virtue of the plurality of possible forms this activity may take. In this paper, I address this problem by examining (digital) gaming under the heading of practice theory, in an attempt to shed more light on the practical aspects of ludic literacy. Building on the theoretical and conceptual frameworks of Pierre Bourdieu, I present a general model of digital gaming as a form of situated human practice, followed by details of a case study, conducted in order to test and adjust the initial version of the model. Though further research with a greater population of players is needed in order to expand the scope of the model, the findings of the study lend credence to its validity as a conceptual framework for delineating and framing different practices generated by digital game artefacts.

Abstract:
The usefulness of wisely prescribed powered components in the rehabilitation of upper extremity amputees has long been recognized (Schmidl, 1973). Their value is especially evident in the prosthetic rehabilitation of high level adult and child amputees (Heger et al, 1985). In recent years, manufacturers of prosthetic hardware have provided practitioners with a wide selection of either myo-electrically or switch controlled electromechanical components and systems. As a rule, however, most commercially available components are designed to serve the adult amputee and do not lend themselves for use in the prosthetic rehabilitation of children. One current exception is the availability of child-size electric hands.

Abstract:
The Arthritis Hand Function Test (AHFT) has shown promise as a standardized, reliable measure of hand function in adults with rheumatoid arthritis in previous studies. This study adds to the development of the multi-item AHFT by evaluating its inter-rater and test-retest reliability in a sample of 26 adults (mean age, 67 years) with osteoarthritis. Further, because ability to perform activities of daily living (ADD is predicated on physical components such as hand function, the validity of the AHFT is examined by correlating the scores achieved by these subjects with their scores from self-report measures of physical ADL and instrumental ADL. Analysis indicates strong inter-rater reliability ( r= 0.99 or better for all AHFT items) and moderate to strong test-retest reliability (range, r= 0.74 to r=0.96). Moderate correlations for most AHFT items with physical ADL and instrumental ADL lend support to its development as a valid test of hand function.

Abstract:
Banks play a pivotal role in India's economic development. They sustain the country’s GDP growth through turning people’s static money into capital for investment and thus directing cash flow via dynamic market systems. Bank deposits provide secured and fixed return unlike the share market that holds higher risk of investment and offer a variable return which is uncertain. Whenever an individual or a company is at financial crisis, Banks lend their hands and offer loans and help them as much as possible to cut down the financial burden. But on the other hand, when the financial health of a bank itself is very weak which in turn will certainly affect the entire movement of the banking sector in the stock market and further that would lead to unreliable market circumstances. In this paper, we will be analyzing the major reasons behind the complete wash out of Lakshmi Vilas Bank from the Indian Stock Market and try to figure out the alarming indicators so as to be more cautious in the mere future to avoid such financial breakdown caused due to the bankrupted scenario.
