Abstract:
The thesis aims at showing how the concepts of landscape and native land cannot be dissociated from Lenz. His familiar landscapes are omnipresent (his depiction of the sea, wind, flora and fauna, etc) they play various roles within the novels, have links with history, take on symbolic value, act as guarantors of truth, as a source of inspiration increasing sensitivity, humour and knowledge, offer refuge and happiness. The features of the land (its customs and language) reveal the inhabitants psychology. Its links with the past are considered through the question of a regional museum. It gives rise to two clearly opposed points of view: one in favour and one against. Lenz's place in German literature can be defined by his 'perceptive love' of his land which, in turn, determines his style, his idea of commitment and his indulgence. Above all, his home land offers him an ideal standpoint-the only possible one in his opinion-from whitch to tackle universal philosopical or historical problems

Abstract:
Until now, it is assumed that the novel of adolescence (Adoleszensroman) is a genre that deals with the formation of identity during adolescence. This thesis proposes a more precise definition for the novel of adolescence based on two new features: the "fate of the initiative" (Schicksal der Initiative) and the "historical judgment" (historisches Urteil). These two characteristics of the novel of adolescence are complemented by the already known characteristic of the narration of formation of adolescent identity. The study focuses on novels published in Germany and Austria since the 90s. The thesis adopts a hermeneutic and historical approach (hermeneutisch und literarhistorisch). Sociological theory of literary forms helps to explain the change and the historical conditions of literary genres. The study attempts to explain that the narration of the adolescent "formation of identity" in the novel of adolescence is a theme which complements a second theme: the adolescent takes the "initiative" within the context of his search for identity and confronts his more or less "naive" expectationswith the historical reality of a society. The corpus of novels studied within the thesis form a genre of novels of adolescence (Adoleszensroman-Genre) which can be defined as "novels of adolescence of postmodern realism". It is part of the dominant literary and historical atmosphere which began ca. 1995 and can be characterized by a certain moral and political "sobriety" (Nüchternheit)

Abstract:
Text in German
The present thesis undertakes a comprehensive survey and criticak analysis of the concept of duty and its significance in the prose of Siegfried Lenz (born in 1926). It concentrates on those novels and narratives in which duty is the main motif; these are Schwierige Trauer (1960), Das Feuerschiff (1960), Deutschstunde (1968) and Ein Kriegsende (1984). After an introduction which outlines the development and the influence of the concept of duty in Germany, the thesis deals with Lenz's prose in chronological order. Siegfried Lenz's main motif is the significance of the concept of duty within the moral code of the individual, the specific meaning and influence of which has been developed in Germany. Lenz does not deny that duty is a necessary element of the process of socialization. But he rejects the unreflected and uncritical acceptance of a dubious morality based on a sense of duty, at the expense of individuality and responsibility for oneself. It is a deformed understanding of duty which Lenz exposes and criticizes in his work: a characteristic mark of submissiveness and slavish obedience ("Untertanengeist und Kadavergehorsam"). These distortions are determined by political-historical events, theological dogmas, philosophical theses and an authoritarian upbringing. The reasons for the attitudes and behaviour of Lenz's fictitious characters have their roots in those factors. Lenz always insists on reflection. He refuses the uncritical acceptance of a morality based on duty, which allows a person to avoid his or her responsibility. However, Siegfried Lenz neither attempts to construct a social background nor does he offer recipes for a new social order. Rather he restricts himself to the sceptical questioning of norms and values, which are maintained by authority. The author creates a conflict in a hermetic environment, for example a ship or a small village, in which his fictitious characters have to prove themselves. By confronting his readers with such an extreme situation and the protagonists' questionable decisions, Lenz forces his public to reconsider their own position. The author's aim is to make his readers realize that right and wrong cannot always be distinguished in a clear-cut manner

This thesis deals with the introduction and translation of Siegfried Lenz''s short stories. It is divided into two parts. The first parts is about the introduction of Siegfried Lenz and his literary theory, and exploration of his shortstories and ways of solving them are disscussed. The secondpart of the thesis is the chinese translaton.Siegfried Lenz has been one of the most prominent writers in German Literature after World War II, and has wonworldwide fame by his novel "Deutschstunde." Writting to Lenz is a way to understand himself and the external World. For him, the writer plays the role that casts off limitation from the out- side, is faithful to himself, and shows concerns about the problems of our life. Lenz faithfully presents realities in his novels.Besides long novels, Lenz is famous for his short stories. In order to envision the genuine spirit of his crea- tion, I select eight stories from his four collections. In his earlier works, he discribes individual facing the position of testing of conflict between the inner individual and the exterior world. The character is always defeated and loses in the end. But Lenz explores the implications of failure. In view of this, I choose two stories "Hunter of Mockery ''Jaeger des Spotts''," "The Runner ''Laefer''," which are influenced by Ernest Hemingway in term of language and theme. In the social criticism, Lenz focuses his attention on the problems brougt by the economic properity and delineates the absurd phenomena in the new rich society. Stories of this type include "House of Pure Love ''Ein Haus aus lauter Liebe''," "Beck Pay ''Nachzahlung''," "Ph D in Entertainment ''Der Amue- sierdoktor''," and "My Miserable Face ''Mein verdrossenes Gesicht''." In the historical perspective, he also concen- trates on the postwar problems that German have to face. Stories of this type consist of "A Friend of the Goverment ''Ein Freund der Regierung''," and "Difficult Mourning ''Schwig- rige Trauer''."

Translation has been a common way of learning foreign languages. For the foreign language learner, it is quite a convenient way to have contact with external culture through reading translated literature. Literary works, especially novels, have been translated the most and their translated versions have been published the most frequently. However, the massive and fast publishing unavoidably makes us meditate on some quality-related issues, such as: whether the original works are used as the reference source texts for translations, whether the translated editions undergo strict examination, whether the translations are of good quality, etc.. Therefore, a critical approach is very essential. Here the German writer Lenz’s short story (Erzaehlung) named “so zaertlich war Suleyken” and its Chinese translation “wo de xiao cun ru ci duo qing” (我的小村如此多情) are selected as critical object. This thesis is hoped to serve as a future reference for analysis and criticism of literature, and to strengthen translation criticism in Taiwan. This study is organized as the following four chapters. The first chapter introduces research motives, research target, research steps and scope. The second chapter summarizes the theories of German Functional Translation and integrates the theoretical conceptions for the study. In addition, it introduces the idea of the translation critical theory from Catharina Reiss, principle and frame of translation criticism. The third chapter comprises text evaluation. The evaluation proceeds with Reiss’ theory as theoretical basis and is divided into the understanding of original text and the transformation by translation, which includes both interior and exterior linguistic elements in the text. The fourth chapter concludes the evaluation results and provides suggestions for future German-Chinese translation. Current research elicits that the translator tends to adapt the text to features of the target language, by changing the grammatical structure of the source text and applying idiomatic expressions and adages. For the translation of words, appropriate expressions are generally used by the translator. But when the words occur in complicated grammar, the translator usually misunderstands the meaning of the original text. Besides, the translator leaves the style of the original text out of consideration, because higher priority is given to semantic equivalence.

The German word “duty” (Latin: officium) is a term that conveys general moral or official duties, obligations, something you must do. A fundamental concept of ethics, it can be traced as far back as ancient Greece. It was introduced into Christian ethics by Cicero, largely praised by Kant, and considered a typical German virtue. Amongst the various kinds of duties, there naturally exists, as described by German writer Siegfried Lenz, “a duty in the sense that one submits oneself without questioning, and carries out orders passed down along the command hierarchy.” The concept at the core of said duty is “obedience”. In “The German Lesson”, it plays a critical role; several different questions are raised in association with it. What is “The Joy of Duty”? Whence comes this duty? How does it evolve and affect human beings? And what are the social concerns that consequently arise from this? The plot of “The German Lesson” revolves around an edict issued during the Nazi era, which renders painting forbidden. Through the irreconcilable conflict between the two opposing main characters, namely the duty bound police officer and the unrestrained painter, the concept of duty is unraveled dialectically. The narrator of the story, who is the son of the police officer, is a victim under his father’s morbid sense of duty. He is, nonetheless, also a young critic representing other difficult adolescents in a war against their father’s generation. The “banality of Evil”, hence, the term coined by Hannah Arendt, is represented by a particular sort of people in “The German Lesson”: the ordinary people at the bottom of the command hierarchy, such as the police officer and the warden of the juvenile detention center. They carry out their duties without questioning. These ordinary yet submissive officials are the source whence a corrupt government derives its power, allowing for the implementation of inhuman decrees. And, worst of all, they do not carry the burden of guilt as accomplices for their actions. For them, they are merely fulfilling their duties; the morality of the orders is disregarded. The philosophical discussion of duty in “The German Lesson” reflects the problem of collective moral responsibility, a subject of concern not only during the Nazi era, but also in the contemporary German society.
