Full textThe reception of the Libro di Pittura by Leonardo da Vinci: from the death of the author to the publication of the Trattato della Pittura (Paris, 1651). The first publication of the Trattato della Pittura by Leonardo da Vinci consists of a double edition, the one in Italian and the other in French, dating back to 1651. This publication results from a manuscript tradition descending from the Libro di pittura, a collection of the artist’s writings, spread through about fifty manuscript copies in an abridged version. With the aim to study the reception of Da Vinci’s theories, our research concerns the criteria leading to this selection of texts, as well as the philological analysis of the earliest copies made in Florence from 1570 to 1580. The cultural milieu interested in Leonardo’s theories is outlined by comparing this abridged text with the treatises on arts, flourishing from the second half of Cinquecento onwards. Actually, at the beginning of the XVIIth century, in Rome, where the text is arranged for the publication and illustrated by Nicolas Poussin, Leonardo’s findings on optics generate new workshop experiences and theories on arts. The circumstances leading finally to the printing of the Trattato in Paris are a consequence of the wide influence of Leonardo’s thinking on painting. Among the French theoreticians of the Académie royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, founded in 1648, different points of view arise about this publication: either its limits are pointed out or the Italian Renaissance Master is taken as a model

Full textMy thesis estimate the renown of Leonardo da Vinci and of his paintings in France between 1499, date of the first French conquest of Milan when the artist strike up a relationship with the French, and 1708, when Roger de Piles recapitulate the French assessments of his work. I have organised my research around Leonardo's paintings. The pictures, selected because they were in France during the 16th or 17 th centuries and because they were at his period attributed to Leonardo, have been studied in a way relative to the taste's History. First, I have precisely reconstructed theirs movements in the French royal collection and in the French privates collections. Then, I have made a inventory of theirs copies, that is those who are in the privates collectionsduring the 16th and 17th centuries and those who are today in the French publics collections. . At last, I have defined the influence of the picture on the French artistic production. The thesis approach also the French's interest for the "Last Supper" of Santa Maria delle Grazie and collect the French assessments about Leonard and his works in the French literature at his period

Full textA WHOLE PROCESS OF THOUGHT ENSUED FROM A STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLE WHICH TOOK THE FORM A WAGER: REGARDING VERBAL AS VERBAL, IMAGES AS IMAGES AND IDEAS AS IDEAS. ITS PARTICULARITY WAS TO ASSOCIATE MENTAL SPECIES TO THEIR GROUPS OF SUBSTITUTIONS, TO FORMALIZE THE VALUE OF EACH SPECIES IN THE CONSCIENCE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF THE OTHERS, IN ORDER TO GIVE AN ACCOUNT OF THE IMMANENCE OF THE MECHANISMS AND OPERATIONS OF THE MIND FREED FROM ALL CONSTRAINTS. THIS PROFESSION OF FAITH BECAME PAUL VALEY'S CREDO, TO SUCH PROPORTIONS THAT HE THOUGHT IT COULD ATTEST THE ABSURDITY OF HIS AMBITION WHICH WOULD HAVE CONSISTED IN BRINGING TO COMPLETION WHAT HE REFERRED TO AS THE ANALYTIC THEORIE OF THOUGHT THIS VENTURE COULDN'T BE BROUGHT TO A SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION, FOR LACK OF TIME, AND THE THEORY COULDN'T TAKE SHAPE. THE SUBJECT OF THE RESEARCH WAS AN ATTEMP TO THEORIZE ALL THE PSYCHIC FUNCTIONS, ALL THE NECESSARY CONDITIONS TO THE FUNCTIONINGS OF THOUGHT THE LEGACY WHICH HE LEFT HAPPENS TO BE SCATTERED IN HIS NOTEBOOKS. THE WEB WAS THERE TO BE UNRAVELLED. THE LEADING STRAND : TO CONSIDER AND TO KEEP ONLY THE QUESTIONS WHICH RELATE TO THE OBSERVABLE FUNCTIONING OF THOUGHT IN ORDER TO FIND THE CONDITIONS, THE RELATIONS AND THE POSSIBILITIES OR IMPOSSIBILITIES OF WHAT HE REFERS TO AS THE TOTAL PHENOMENAN AND WHICH PROVES TO BE THE WHOLE OF CONSCIENCE IN FACT, FINDING THE LAWS OF THE GLOBAL REPRESENTATION OF THIS MIXTURE OF STATISTICAL AND FUNCTIONAL WHICH SEEMS TO BE THE PREROGATIVE OF PSYCHIC LIFE, GAVE ITS ORIENTATION TO THE VALERYAN research WHICH THIS THESIS HAS TRIED TO PUT INTO SHAPE AND CONCEPTUALIZE
