Abstract:
Natural resources as well as mineral resources are one among several important factors needed for the existence of human beings, and many countries which posses few of these resources are likely to improve in development. But the opposite has been seen in many underdeveloped country’s that are rich in natural resources, but they still lack development, and above all they suffer from conflict in their societies.  The aim of this study is to look into the role which diamonds has played in the conflict between Sierra Leonean government and the Revolutionary United Front (RUF). And also to relate the behavior’s of both parties in the 1991 conflict to the issue of greed and grievance in detecting the actual causes. I was able to conclude in my study that diamonds in Sierra Leone was not the main cause of the conflict, but it acted as a propelling factor, due to its ability to prolong the war by generating income for both rebels and government. But grievances emerging from Sierra Leone’s history are more likely to have been the main driving force for the rebellion which took place.

Abstract:
Since the 1980s many developing countries have moved away from state intervention/control, to more openness and market-determinism in the conduct of their economic affairs. This has re-opened the debate on the relative merits and demerits of state control and market-determinism in the formulation of economic policy. This study takes this debate a step further; in addition to investigating the effects of direct and indirect government intervention in Sierra Leone's agricultural sector, it also analyses the relationship between intervention and the development of alternative trading channels - called parallel markets. In recent decades the manipulation of pricing policy (direct intervention) and the adverse effects of macreconomic policy (indirect intervention) have made official trading channels unattractive. This disincentive has discouraged producers, and exporters, from trading in official channels. Consequently, official output and the contribution of tax revenue have fallen. On the other hand, parallel market activity has fared considerably better; its output and share of total output have increased. This study analyses the origins, causes and consequences of such trends, and their implications for the Sierra Leone economy. Analyses in most previous studies focus on the estimation of total intervention; this study extends such analyses by using the Decomposition technique to determine the level of direct and indirect intervention in Sierra Leone's agricultural export sector, from 1970 to 1992. This allows a more comprehensive examination of the scale and type of government intervention. The results indicate persistently high levels of total intervention throughout the study period, with indirect intervention being the more significant component. Parallel market activity showed a sharp increase in the 1980s, which is the period of failed macroeconomic stabilisation programmes. The OLS regression model suggests a positive relationship between parallel market activity, and both direct and indirect intervention.

Abstract:
This research is based on a study of the military organization of the Stado da Mar, the maritime territories of the Venetian empire, during the second half of the XVth century. For most of the period, the Republic of Venice is fighting two wars against the Ottoman empire which end with territorial looses for Venice. We have analysed the cooperation of the three tools of the Stato da Mar’s defence – the garrisons, the war fleet and the stradiots (light mounted soldiers with Balkan origins) – and the Venetian leaders attempts to challenge and struggle with the Ottomans. We have insisted on the protagonists of the war, to show a less vertical vision of the Stato da Mar’s defence organization, using for this purpose public letters, few studied by historians until now. Friuli, region that belongs to the italian part of the empire, has been added in the analysis because its population suffers ottoman attacks during the period and because of the exceptional preservation of documents dealing with his perception of Venetian-Ottoman wars and his relationship with the venetian army soldiers

Abstract:
Peace operations are considered to be hard to solve but Sierra Leone is by many thought to be a success despite major problems during the operations. Solving this conflict involved several dif-ferent actors which all contributed to the creating of peace. The purpose of this essay is to examine whether similarities between the way the conflict in Sierra Leone was solved and the method that Galula presents led to the positive outcome. This will be done by a qualitative textual analysis to demonstrate presence and absence of those parts that Galula claim are crucial to counter an insur-gency. Similarities between the method used at the solving of the conflict in Sierra Leone and Galulas method for counterinsurgency can be found. The similarities are not sufficient enough to claim that it was thanks to similarities to Galulas methods that peace was restored in Sierra Leone.

Abstract:
The Church of San Isidoro in León has one of the most extensive and ambitious ecclesiastical treasures, which - based on a foundation context - has survived the turmoil of the centuries in Europe. Being a cultural heritage of the Christian Kingdom of Spain, the treasure is mentioned in countless articles. Its importance for the introduction and spread of the Romanesque style on the Iberian Peninsula and the associated Europeanization of the Spanish kingdoms is repeatedly emphasized. It is contrarily discussed in science from which sources the newly introduced stylistic devices drew. Both France and England, Byzantium and the Arab world are considered role models. In the 1920s and 1930s, Arthur Kingsley Porter and Manuel Gómez-Moreno first assumed that the visual origins were also to be found in Ottonian art. The aim of the present dissertation is to critically investigate the assumption, which was formulated around 100 years ago and has been repeatedly taken up, in-depth studies for the first time. According to the thesis, the Northern Spanish kings recited the Ottonian-early Salian rule presentation to manifest their own imperial claim to power on the Iberian Peninsula. Analogous to this, a new artistic style was introduced with the new iconographic forms.

Abstract:
The demands of the global world have made our institutions evolve to adapt to the changing needs of the country. These changes are demanded by people, who call for better quality and more transparent, efficient and extensive services. The economic effect of infrastructure investments varies not only according to the sector, but also according to their design, location and opportunity. Not every type of infrastructure investment produces positive effects, only investments in infrastructure that is efficiently provided and for which there is a demand. A common denominator of the situation in the different countries of South American is undoubtedly the lack of availability of financial resources to develop transportation infrastructure works, whether to meet internal needs or to contribute to bilateral or multilateral integration processes. Likewise, border zones must be economically and culturally integrated with the other regions of the country. To such effect, an adequate physical integration is necessary, that is, transportation infrastructure must also take into consideration the country’s integration with the neighboring countries to facilitate domestic and international trade. Since public investment is unlikely to meet all the country’s investment requirements regarding infrastructure development, priority should be given to the promotion of new financing systems: private investment because public resources should be distributed to the attention of the needs of all economic sectors in which the State intervenes. Concession is one of the mechanisms presently used for the promotion of private investment in services and public works. The State uses this mechanism to entrust the development of utilities to private entities under a legal system that must govern said development. The Concession creates a mechanism for combining public and private resources to ensure more efficient use and adequate for the first performance for the latter. This thesis contains a general presentation about road concessions and the situation of the transportation sector in Peru, stressing roads in border zones, as well as a model to evaluate the concession for the Sullana - El Alamor road (border with Ecuador)

Abstract:
This dissertation is the result of the following concern: understanding how the contemporary Brazilian fiction has been absorbing and reworking the contamination that it suffers from film language. After all, owing to the cliché accoding to which we currently live in the “society of images”, our concern is to examine how the literature imitates the film language, plays with its properties and tries to become cinema. To this end, we chose to divide the text into three parts. Firstly, we aim to demonstrate how cinema emerged into the incipient society of spectacle of the nineteenth century and became a genuine art form after creating its own language, which was sedimented in the classical cinema and got into crisis in modern cinema, and was emancipated in the “post-cinema”. Then, through intermediality, we investigate how the phenomenon of hybridization between film and literature happens, besides seeking the methodological tool for the ulterior analysis of the works that compose our corpus. Finally, based on the previous discussions, our intention is to analyze the novels Hoje está um dia morto (2005), and Como desaparecer completamente (2010), both written by writer André de Leones, born in Goiás. It’s important to note that, although we seek to verify the presence of film language in literary works, it’s not our interest to comparatively analyze film works, i.e., cinema is seen only from a theoretical perspective; after all, we are interested in the literary object.

After years of British rule and a decade of civil unrest, rural communities in Sierra Leone were left with the residues of a colonial mentality and the psychological, physical and economic ravages of war. As a result, people are trapped in a mindset that discards vernacular architecture as obsolete and unpractical, and that associates modernity with the "concrete and zinc" model. Thriving to overcome extreme poverty, these villages plan to develop stronger economies and encourage education by building permanent school structures. The aim of this thesis is not to just provide villages with an economical school design, but to inspire a new mentality towards architecture and a construction system that can adapt to a diverse range of situations and be applied in Sierra Leone and beyond. In order for them to propose a new architecture; I suggest they 5 look back to their roots. The only way to produce sustainable and practically cost-free buildings is by making the most of locally abundant and renewable resources, such as earth to their full potential, thus giving an effective and interesting twist to traditional architecture. The new system breaks up the school into subunits that serve as a "kit of parts" that may be arranged to suit any condition. Furthermore, these individual units must take into consideration function, daylighting, waterproofing, and ventilation. When an entire community comes together to create exciting and innovative architecture, a new window of opportunity will be opened and a better standard of living can be reached.

Sierra Leone came to world attention in the 1990s when a catastrophic civil war linked to the diamond trade was reported globally. This fleeting and particular interest, however, obscured two crucial processes in this small West African state. On the one hand, while the civil war was momentous and brutal, affecting all Sierra Leoneans, it was also just one element in the long and faltering attempt to build a nation and state, given the country’s immensely problematic pre-colonial and British colonial legacies. On the other, the aftermath of the war precipitated a huge international effort to construct a ‘liberal peace’, with mixed results, and interrupted by the devastating Ebola pandemic. This made Sierra Leone a laboratory for both post-conflict and health crisis interventions. Sierra Leone examines over 230 years of its history and sixty years of independence, placing state–society relations at the centre of an original and revealing investigation of those who have tried to rule or change Sierra Leone and its inhabitants, and the responses engendered. It interweaves the historical narrative with sketches of politicians, anecdotes, the landscape and environment and key turning-points, alongside theoretical and other comparisons with the rest of Africa. It is a new contribution to the debate for those who already know Sierra Leone and a solid point of entry for those who wish to.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the near failure and ultimate success of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone. This operation is an interesting case study as it followed failed attempts at regional peacekeeping, in many ways mirrored them, but ultimately ended the conflict. This was the last operation the UN started before the Brahimi report and was effectively a tipping point for UN operations in general. This research analyzes the strategy and actions of the UN force as the situation progressively deteriorated to near total failure and the changes made to both that led to the dramatic turnaround in a short period of time. The overall strategy of the UN mission, mandates and their interpretation, troop levels, and responses to threats are considered. The shift from a peacekeeping to peace enforcement strategy and the simultaneous shift in tactics to favor aggressive response to threats earned the credibility necessary to deter aggression. This underscores the need to tailor strategy and mandate to the specific conditions on the ground and to allow the force the flexibility to adapt quickly.

Abstract:
Over the past decade, child soldiers have inundated the media. Images of boys armed with AK-47s appear ever-present, providing a cautionary story of innocent childhood gone awry (Rosen, 2005). As these representations turn commonly held assumptions of a protected and innocent childhood on its head, what they conceal is as challenging as what they reveal. These media images tell us little about the children behind the guns or the complexity of their wartime and post-war experiences. I was concerned with girl soldiers in Sierra Leone as an unexplored group of ‘war affected’ citizens. I quickly discovered that this was a growing and global phenomenon, one that few analysts and policy makers were aware of. Little was understood of the issue of girl soldiers, not only where, why, and how the practice of using girls in war came about, but also what it means for girls and, most importantly, what to do about it. in the aftermath of conflict, there is often the expectation that people’s lives will improve. Girl soldiers’ post-conflict reality in Sierra Leone was somewhat different. In a rapid time span countless girls unlike boys’ were confronted with the reality of establishing new identities that depended not on the rebel forces, but on factors such as access to family and community support — factors that were lacking for girl soldiers at war’s end.

Moiba, Joseph Gaima Lukulay. "Religion and peacemaking in Sierra Leone." Thesis, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, 2016. http://repository.uwtsd.ac.uk/699/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis concerns religion as a peacemaking tool in Sierra Leone. The vast majority of people in Sierra Leone consider themselves to be Christians, Muslims and / or adherents of African Traditional Religion (ATR). This thesis examines the role of religious leaders and religious communities in the peacemaking process during and after the Sierra Leone Civil War from 1991 - 2002. In previous studies about violence and religion, the role of religion in the peacemaking process has often been neglected, particularly in studies about the African continent. This study aims to fill this gap. The research is based on theoretical approaches in the field of religion and violence and religion and peace, as well as a qualitative and an empirical study in Sierra Leone comprising participant observation, interviews and data collected from archives. The thesis develops the praxis of peace based on the Sierra Leone context. It argues that since independence from Britain in 1961, subsequent governments have woefully marginalised religion. The thesis demonstrates that Christian leaders, churches, and ecumenical organisations were resources that contributed to peacemaking in Sierra Leone. Christians and their leaders influenced by ATR also led and supported the works of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Sierra Leone (TRCSL) and the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL). Christians provided leadership for truth-telling and reconciliation, relief, advocacy for peace, and confidence-building as peacemakers in action. By combining a theoretical discussion of Girard, Juergensmeyer, Schmidt, Huntington, Bowie, Johnston and others with the qualitative and empirical case study of Sierra Leone, the research adds new dimensions to the general academic debate on religion and violence, as well as religion and peacemaking, with respect to the clash of civilisations, faith-based diplomacy and other theories on religion and violence, and religion and peacemaking, in Sierra Leone.

Abstract:

Bosire, Obara Tom. "The Bondo secret society : female circumcision and the Sierra Leonean state." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3506/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the place of the Bondo secret society, whose precondition for membership is female genital cutting (FGC), in Sierra Leone’s post-war politics. The Bondo society is considered a repository of gendered knowledge that bestows members with significant forms of power in the local social context. Members, especially Bondo society leaders, are dedicated to the continued practice of FGC even amidst calls for its eradication. The Bondo is much sought after and overwhelmingly supported by the political elite due to the role it plays in ordering community life and its position as the depository of cultural repertoires (Swidler, 2001:24). Most women gravitate towards the Bondo who also use it to shape and reshape their identity. For example, as part of post war recovery, I argue, the Bondo was employed by political actors to legitimate and extend the hegemony of political movements. This analysis, therefore, examines the complicated interplay of power between politicians and the Bondo society members in the context of an international outcry against the practice of FGC. The thesis argues that the Bondo society leaders are keen to maintain the status quo because of the forms of power accessible to them in the local socio-economic and political context. Faced with an over-arching discourse of eradication and change concerning the FGC procedure, the Bondo society has in turn fashioned a counter-discourse framed in terms of “defending traditional culture” to forestall changes that could affect the “privileges” they access. I explore the tensions of this situation in this thesis. That is, on the one hand, the tension brought about by opposition between the FGC reform agenda and the Bondo society members’ attempts to resist change in the ritual practice. On the other hand, I am concerned with the tension in the patronage they enjoy from politicians who are caught up in a double bind situation: they simultaneously need support from Bondo members but are, at the same time, reliant on international development aid. In exploring power from below, I examine Bondo society’s community stock of knowledge and how this symbolic power is employed in Sierra Leonean politics. This does not lead to a vindication of FGC but underscores the complex social, economic and political meanings embedded in the Bondo and in discourses of power in Sierra Leone. The thesis points out that eradication advocates need to take account of the various dimensions of the Bondo society’s embeddedness in relation to both state and society.

Manela, Aaron Daniel. "Arthur Saint-Leon’s The Little Humpbacked Horse in Context." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/11507.

Abstract:
x, 91 p. : ill., music
In this study I examine representations of antisemitism, fantasy, and cultural imperialism in the 1864 ballet The Little Humpbacked Horse, composed by Cesare Pugni and choreographed by Arthur Saint-Leon. As the creative team adapted the story from verse to ballet, they literally morphed the titular character into new fantastical forms. They also added Jewish, Muslim, and other oriental characters and ended the ballet with a parade of the Russian nations. Drawing on the works of Richard S. Wortman, Julie Kalman, and Roger Bartra, I place these transformations in the context of a larger Russian ambivalence around the shift from a rural and woodland economy to an urban one, the inclusion of Eastern provinces in the rapidly expanding nation, and the emancipation – and inclusion of – internal minorities. I then explain how the music, choreography, and focus of the ballet change as the relevance of these mid-nineteenth century concerns fades.

Abstract:
We present an intensive monitoring of high-resolution spectra of the Ca II K line in the A7IV shell star phi Leo at very short (minutes, hours), short (night to night), and medium (weeks, months) timescales. The spectra show remarkable variable absorptions on timescales of hours, days, and months. The characteristics of these sporadic events are very similar to most that are observed toward the debris disk host star beta Pic, which are commonly interpreted as signs of the evaporation of solid, comet-like bodies grazing or falling onto the star. Therefore, our results suggest the presence of solid bodies around phi Leo. To our knowledge, with the exception of beta Pic, our monitoring has the best time resolution at the mentioned timescales for a star with events attributed to exocomets. Assuming the cometary scenario and considering the timescales of our monitoring, our results indicate that phi Leo presents the richest environment with comet-like events known to date, second only to beta Pic.

Abstract:
Youth unemployment has been presented as a security risk to countries emerging from civil war. These assessments often rely on the assumption of a direct relationship between labour market exclusion and political violence. This thesis challenges this assumption, not by denying that the connection exists, but by suggesting that we need a better understanding of how the two are related. Through qualitative research with young people engaged precariously on the margins of the informal economy in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown, the thesis explores how labour market experiences influence different patterns of political mobilisation. It puts forward that violence is not inherent to unemployment, but that the impact of joblessness on mobilisation is mediated by social factors and the specific nature of the post-war political economy. For Freetown's youth, labour market exclusion has implications for social status, identities, norms and the nature of social relations. This in turn shapes their political subjectivities and claims on the state; it structures the opportunities and constraints to their collective action; and influences their trajectories towards political violence. These processes reflect a fraught articulation between tactics employed expediently to respond to structural circumstances and longer-term aspirations. Individual attempts to survive adverse economic and political terrains coexist with work-based political claims placed on the state and aspirations of social and political inclusion, even if the two are often at odds and the former undermine the latter.

Sow, Moustapha Baidy. Reims, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008REIMD002.

Full text
Abstract:
The Special Court for Sierra Leone had been set up in Freetown on January 16 th, 2002, thanks to a common initiative of the Sierra Leonan Government and the United Nations. The international agreement signed by both authorities settled a "speciai" international court, constituted by an international and local staff entitled to implement local and international humanitarian law. The Security Council mandated this new International Court to bring to justice the perpetrators of crimes against humanity, war crimes and serious violations of international humanitarian law cormnitted in Sierra Leone since 1996. The establishment (institution) of the Special Court for Sierra Leone has been decided on the basis of remarks notified by the United Nations and made on the functioning of the international Criminal Courts for (former) Yugoslavia and Rwanda. The conclusion of the observations led the UN political authorities to envisage the creation of an International Court, clearly submitted to financial, legal and political constraints. The final outline of this repressive jurisdiction will obey to a new charter specific to ad hoc International Courts, summed up (within) in the following trilogy: "expeditiousness, cost efficiency and effectiveness". This conception of an international penal justice connected with UN political and financial issues, will induce inescapably major legal, judicial and social consequences, which are largely criticised. It is then legitimate to question the prospect of the model of this new international jurisdiction stuck between political constraints and its initial mandate which is to dispense unconditional justice to the victims
