<p><p><p>Allmänhetens uppfattning är att desto fler valmöjligheter det finns desto bättre är det. Men är det verkligen så i alla olika valsituationer vi ställs inför? (Iyengar & Lepper 2000) </p><p> </p><p>Utifrån tidigare forskning testar vår uppsats om människors valmöjligheter, ett experiment där vi ser hur människor gör sina val på den svenska fondmarknaden. De fick välja mellan ett mindre (limited) urval eller ett större (extensive) urval av fonder. </p><p> </p><p>Utgångspunkten i uppsatsen är två olika forskningsartiklar från Iyengar & Lepper (2000) samt Iyengar & Jiang (2003) där de testar hur människor gör sina val när de får olika stora utbud att </p><p>välja bland. I deras forskning kommer de fram till att även om människor tycker att det är roligare att ha många valmöjligheter så blir det oftare val gjorda eller saker köpta om de har </p><p>mindre saker att välja bland. Detta fenomen kallas choice overload och innebär alltså att det finns en valtrötthet för människor när de ska göra sina val. </p><p> </p><p>Vårt huvudsyfte med denna uppsats är att testa om fenomenet choice overload kan tillämpas på den svenska fondmarknaden och därmed se om beslutet att själv välja fonder påverkas av fondutbudets storlek. Experimentet skedde genom en enkätundersökning på två stycken bankkontor där slumpvis utvalda kunder fick svara på enkäterna. Vi hade två olika enkäter där </p><p>den ena bestod av en fråga där de skulle välja bland ett mindre urval fonder (10st) och den andra bland ett större urval fonder (60st). Varje respondent fick bara en enkät och var därmed helt ovetande om att den andra existerade. Istället för att välja själva kunde de även få låta en </p><p>rådgivare välja åt dem, detta för att få ett alternativ till att välja själv. När vi samlat in alla enkäterna (98st) så jämförde vi resultaten mot varandra i statistikprogrammet SPSS. </p><p> </p><p>Delsyftet som kompletterar huvudsyftet i uppsatsen är att vi rensar för demografiska skillnader som t.ex. kön, utbildning och ålder, så att de inte har någon inverkan på beslutet att välja fonder. </p><p> </p><p>Genom experimentet vi gjorde så visade det sig att människor valde fonder själva i större utsträckning när de fick enkäten med det mindre fondutbudet på (limited) än när de fick den enkäten med det större fondutbudet (extensive). Denna slutsats är förenlig med den forskning </p><p>vi hade som utgångspunkt till uppsatsen. Alltså att människor hellre gör sina val när de har ett mindre utbud att välja bland. Även om människor gillar att ha många valmöjligheter så kan det leda till att det blir så komplext att hantera att det leder till fenomenet choice overload. </p><p>Vårt experiment med enkäter visar även att de demografiska skillnaderna inte spelar någon signifikant roll för resultatet. </p></p></p>

Master of Arts<br>English<br>Daniel A. Hoyt<br>This project is the first portion of the novel Leper Kings. Frank Nash, a bank robber and historical figure from the jazz age Midwest, is struggling to launch his criminal career and find his place in history. A series of his confidants and cronies records his attempts to gain money and notoriety through violence, only to find that Nash has the uncanny ability to propel them forward through time and into visions of the American future through a carefully manipulated series of robberies, assaults, and murders. Nash, aware that he is destined to die in the Kansas City Union Station Massacre of 1933, desperately seeks ways to launch his associates Lucas Mooney and Vernon Miller further into the future, beyond Nash’s death, to experience and catalogue violent events that press increasingly into our present age. As their methods of soothsaying become gradually more reprehensible, Miller and Mooney question their chrono-magical project and find that their volatile leader and prophet, Frank Nash, is slowly and steadily losing his hold on the present reality and those in it.

In our ever-changing world, the role of architecture and designer is constantly adapting to a new criteria. The principals of design have changed in many ways throughout history, but the constant has always been that designed space is intended for the bodies that will occupy it. I believe that the understanding of how architecture can affect our state of mind through perception, social understanding and sensory awareness gives us, as designers, the ability to create spaces that surpass an architecture of the time, and create a space that people will identify with and give meaning to.

O programa experimental que aqui se descreveu, teve seu início baseado na necessidade de mais informações sobre o comportamento desta armadura auxiliar. As diversas divergências em termos de definição e arranjo da armadura de pele, além da possibilidade atual do uso de concretos de alta resistência, para os quais os resultados de ensaios já mostraram a necessidade e a eficiência da armadura longitudinal disposta nas faces da viga, motivaram uma investigação mais cuidadosa. As atividades de pesquisa foram dirigidas para o estudo dessas armaduras, através de ensaios de vigas de concreto armado com diferentes resistências à compressão, objetivando a análise da eficiência destas, sua configuração, além da observação do estado de aberturas das fissuras nos estados de utilização e de ruína das vigas, tomando-se por base as diferentes propostas da NBR-6118[2],da NBR-7187[3], do CEB/90[4] e do EUROCODE-2/92[6]. Da análise feita entre as vigas ensaiadas, dentro do possível e dos resultados obtidos, pretendeu-se fazer uma análise comparativa entre as diferentes normas e apresentar uma proposta de definição do detalhamento e do arranjo da armadura de pele. This work based itself in the fact that the diferences in terms of definition, and arrangement of this kind of reinforcemet could develop into some comparative conclusions about the diferent proposals, signed by NBR- 6118[2], NBR-7187[3],CEB/90[4]and EUROCODE-2/92[6]. Eight beams were modeled, using high strength and usual strength concrete, by each one of the codes above, and subsequently, tested experimentally. Abstract:

This dissertation explores the ways in which Charles Dickens writes Nancy in Oliver Twist, Anthony Trollope writes Carry Brattle in The Vicar of Bullhampton, and Elizabeth Gaskell writes Esther in Mary Barton to represent and examine some very personal and painful anxiety. About Dickens and Trollope, I contend that they turn their experiences of shame into their prostitute's shame. For Gaskell, I assert that the experience she projects onto her prostitute is that of her own maternal grief in isolation. Further, I argue that these authors self-consciously create biographical parallels between themselves and their prostitutes with an eye to drawing conclusions about the results of their anxieties, both for their prostitutes and, by proxy, for themselves. In Chapter II, I assert that in Nancy, Dickens writes himself and his sense of shame at his degradation and exploitation in Warren's Blacking Factory. This shame resulted in a Dickens divided, split between his successful, public persona and his secret, mortifying shame. Both shame and its divisiveness he represents in a number of ways in Nancy. In Chapter III, I contend that Trollope laces Carry Brattle with some of his own biographical details from his early adult years in London. These parallels signify Carry's personal importance to her author, and reveal her silences and her subordinate role in the text as representative of Trollope's own understanding and fear of shame and its consequences: its silencing and paralyzing nature, and its inescapability. In Chapter IV, I posit that Gaskell identifies herself with Esther, and that through her, Gaskell explores three personal things: her sorrow over the loss of not one but three of her seven children, her possible guilt over these deaths, and her emotional isolation in her marriage as she grieved alone. In her creation of Esther, Gaskell creates a way both to isolate her grief and to forge a close companion to share it, thus enabling her to examine and work through grief. In Chapter V, I examine the preface of each novel and find that these, too, reflect each author's identification with and investment of anxiety in his or her particular prostitute.

La vie et l'œuvre de Otto Freundlich (1878), Etienne Béothy (1897-1945) et Jean Leppien (1910-1992), acteurs des avant-gardes allemande, hongroise autant que française, illustrent le XXe siècle des guerres, de la création exilée, de l'internement, la déportation, la Résistance. Par-delà l'affrontement conceptuel et formel entre totalitarisme et avant-gardes se manifeste dans leurs engagements esthétiques. Étudiant au Bauhaus, Jean Leppien s'oppose tôt au régime nazi. Deux sculptures de Otto Freundlich, artiste juif, acteur des mouvements de gauche, pionnier de l'abstraction dès 1911, sont exposées à l'Art dégénéré en 1937. L'activité théorique des trois est intense. Otto Freundlich engage l'artiste dans les combats sociaux et politiques, les découvertes scientifiques de son époque. Etienne Béothy, proche des milieux théosophiques, développe dans la Série d'Or un « outil de la création » fondé sur le Nombre d'Or. Plus pragmatique, Jean Leppien qui « commence à peindre en 1945 », tend à la synthèse des arts et développe les fondements d'un art qui se construit en séries thématiques et formelles. Le champ des transferts esthétiques opérés par Otto Freundlich, Etienne Béothy et Jean Leppien s'évalue à travers le développement des réseaux tissés, l'adhésion aux groupes de l'abstraction « concrète » ; en France Cercle et Carré, puis Abstraction-Création, les Réalités Nouvelles, le groupe Espace enfin en Italie, le Movimento d'Arte concreta. D'est en ouest, ces trois créations émigrées ont défini un langage abstrait, géométrique et coloré empreint d'un profond humanisme qui ne s'éloigne jamais de l'essence de la réalité<br>The lives and creation of Otto Freundlich (1878), Etienne Béothy (1897-1945) and Jean Leppien (1910-1992), actors of the german, hungarian and french avant-gardes, reflect the history of the XXth century, between wars, exile, internment, concentration camp and Resistance. Beyond these life facts, the confrontation of totalitarism and avant-garde spirit is reflected in their esthetical commitments. As a Bauhaus' student Jean Leppien entered in conflict with the nazi government. In 1937, the exhibition of Degenerate Art in Munich proposed two sculptures of the jewish, left-wing Otto Freundlich, a pioner of abstraction since 1911, to public condemnation. All the three of them were involved in theoretical activity. Otto Freundlich summons the artist into the political, social fights as well as scientifical discoveries of his time. Etienne Béothy who proned the theosophy, sets out in the Série d'Or a guide to creation based on the Golden section. Jean Leppien, a pragmatic mind, longs for a synthesis of all artistic kinds and developped a geometrical and sensitive art through thematic and formal series. The artistic transfers Otto Freundlich, Etienne Béothy and Jean Leppien brought is to be evaluated in the light of the network they built up, of their memberships of the groups of concrete abstraction ; in France, Cercle et Carré, Abstraction-Création, the Réalités Nouvelles and Espace ; in Italy, the Movimento d'Arte concreta. These three creations in exile defined from the eastern to the western part of Europe an abstract language of geometrical, coloured forms. It nevertheless estranged from an acute attention paid to human being and the essence of reality

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of scholarly research on the orchestral performance practice of conductor Raymond Leppard.This study presents, with supporting evidence, what an international conductor does today to incorporate the results of research into the interpretation of music. From this study, the writer has presented the influence scholarly research has had on orchestral performance practice, how one of today's conductor and orchestras deal with the issues raised and how they are carried into current performances, and to what degree do musicologists influence his performance. Orchestra conductors continue to learn from performance practice research and young conductors must be encouraged to gain knowledge from this field.Three scholarly musicians, Arnold Dolmetsch (1858-1940), Edmund H. Fellowes (1870-1951), and Thurston Dart (1921-1971), among many others, did much to revive authentic performances of earlier music. Their critical and historical writings are based on original sources and the concept of interpretation by studying composers' original manuscripts and editions in order to better present their musical style and heritage. This developed a strong movement towards the study of incorporating authentic music research into music performance.Maestro Leppard is known particularly for his interpretations of seventeenth and eighteenth century music. He prepared the revivals of Monteverdi and Cavalli's Italian operas. Maestro Leppard has had many experiences with European and American orchestras and has made many recordings. The contents of the interview focused on (1) orchestra size and seating, (2) the authenticity of music, (3) some basic performance practice elements such as tempo, rhythm, dynamics, articulation and phrasing, ornamentation, vibrato, and portamento, (4) string bowing, (5) editions, and (6) interpretation and personal observations.<br>School of Music

The Miracle of Carville, as the late 1930’s and 1940’s have been called, is considered the pivotal point for those isolated with leprosy at the National Leprosarium in Carville, Louisiana. Scholars, researchers and folklorists alike have grappled with these decades as providing the environment in which patient reform was cultivated and eventually sown without a serious consideration of the labor and advocacy of the Sisters missioned there. Understanding the multiple roles of the Sisters at the Louisiana Leper Home, those of home makers, care takers and patient advocates, provides the foundation for the patient reforms won during the Miracle of Carville.

Dès le XIe siècle, le royaume de France est témoin du retour d’un mal terrifiant : la lèpre. L’Auvergne n’est pas épargnée et souffre de la maladie dès le début du XIIe siècle au moins. L’endémie frappe alors les populations et contraint les autorités locales à réagir pour stopper la propagation du mal avec, notamment, l’installation de plusieurs léproseries. Au sein du diocèse de Clermont, ce sont les Montferrandais qui sont les plus organisés avec un tribunal fondé sur une procédure inquisitoire atypique et unique en France : « la Purge ». Les origines de cette juridiction sont obscures. L’historien n’en saisit l’existence et le fonctionnement qu’au début du XIVe siècle, quand elle est créée ou officialisée sous la forme d’un tribunal royal, utilisé ensuite jusqu’au XVIIe siècle. La Purge, détenue et présidée par les consuls de Montferrand, a pour but de convoquer, d’examiner, de juger puis d’écarter de la société saine les lépreux en Auvergne, mais aussi dans les pays voisins. La recherche porte sur l’histoire de la lèpre (premières mentions de la maladie en Auvergne, installation des léproseries, cartographie hospitalière), mais s’attache surtout au tribunal de la Purge. L’étude s’intéresse particulièrement à cet organe juridico-médical, à son origine, à son fonctionnement, à son ressort et aux difficultés rencontrées par la cour royale. Les origines sociales et géographiques des officiers composant l’institution comme leurs carrières sont également appréhendées au moyen de l’outil prosopographique. Le but de la recherche, enfin, est de déterminer quel est le statut du lépreux en Auvergne à la fin du Moyen Âge et au début de l’époque moderne. Les ladres sont-ils traités comme de simples malades ou comme des « criminels » tels que le suppose la masse documentaire de la Purge ?<br>From the 11th century, the kingdom of France witnesses the return of the terrifying evil : the leprosy. Auvergne is not spared and suffers from the disease from the beginning of the 12th century at least. The endemic disease strikes then the populations and forces the local authorities to react to stop the distribution of the evil with, in particular, the installation of several leper-houses. Within the diocese of Clermont, it is the city of Montferrand which is the most organized with a court based on a procedure atypical and unique in France name "the Purge". The origins of this jurisdiction are dark. The historian seizes the existence with it and the functioning only at the beginning of the 14th century, when it is created or officialized under the shape of a royal court, used then until 17th century. The Purge, held and chaired by the consuls of Montferrand, aims at summoning, at examining, at judging then at pushing aside from the healthy society the lepers in Auvergne, but also in the nearby countries. The research concerns the history of the leprosy (first mentions of the disease in Auvergne, installation of leper-houses, hospitable mapping), but becomes attached especially to the court of the Purge. The study is particularly interested in this juridical-medical organ, in its origin, in its functioning, in its competence and in the difficulties met by the royal court. The social and geographical origins of the officers composing the institution as their careers are also studied by means of the prosopographique tool. The purpose of the search, finally, is to determine what is the status of the leper in Auvergne at the end of the middle Ages and at the beginning of modern time. Are the lepers treated as simple patients or as "criminals" such as supposes it the documentation of the Purge?

Abstract:

This study explores the issues around the separation from society of people who have mental health problems. It reconstructs the model of power provided by Foucault in his later work on governmentality. A careful examination of Foucault's theory of power is undertaken in comparison to others within the sociological tradition to demonstrate how this lends itself most appropriately to the kind of analysis undertaken here. The focus is on Foucault's later work where he addresses the power/knowledge couplet and what subsequently came to be coined 'structures in governmentality'. In this sense the study is located as a post Foucauldian analysis and develops some important elements of his theorizing about power. The emphasis demonstrates the significance of power and power relationships in an attempt to make sense of the experiences of people with mental health problems and in particular the impact that mental health policies have on them. Of particular interest is the way that Foucauldian sOciologists such as Rose and Dean have re-constructed Foucault's theory of power. It is this emphasis on governmentality as forms of regulation, social control and management in relation to people who have mental health problems that is at the centre of this study.

The Crusade of Fodor and Lepore against Quine’s Holism. Protest of an Shopper Dissatisfied”. In this paper I discuss Fodor and Lepore’s arguments against Quinean semantic holism. I argue that Fodor and Lepore do not examine the more conclusive Quinean arguments in favor of this thesis. Then I point out that they misunderstand the Quinean articulation between epistemological holism, verificationism and semantic holism. Lastly, I suggest that the attack of Fodor and Lepore to Quine’s semantic holism tacitly presupposes a certain non epistemic atomism.<br>En este ensayo discuto los argumentos de Fodor y Lepore contra el holismo semántico de Quine. Sostengo que Fodor y Lepore no examinan los argumentos quineanos más concluyentes a favor de dicha tesis. Luego señalo que ellos malinterpretan la articulación quineana entre el holismo epistemológico, el verificacionismo y el holismo semántico. Por último, señalo que el ataque de Fodor y Lepore al holismo semántico de Quine presupone tácitamente un cierto atomismo no epistémico.

Abstract:

En polynesie francaise, malgre la mise en place de strategies de lutte, la lepre et la tuberculose posent encore des problemes de sante publique. De nouveaux outils permettant d'ameliorer le controle de ces 2 maladies ont ete envisages. Le diagnostic bacteriologique de la tuberculose avec les methodes habituelles est frequemment retarde. L'amplification genique in vitro par pcr est une technique rapide, sensible et specifique qui pourrait etre utilisee pour le diagnostic bacteriologique de la tuberculose et le suivi des patients tuberculeux sous polychimiotherapie. L'identification des sources de contamination et des voies de transmission est une autre strategie pour limiter la dissemination de la tuberculose. Le polymorphisme des souches de m. Tuberculosis a ete evalue en utilisant 2 marqueurs genetiques (la sequence d'insertion is6110 et la sequence repetee dr). Les resultats obtenus suggerent non seulement la reactivation de lesions anciennes de primo-infections mais egalement une transmission active de la maladie dans la communaute. L'identification des facteurs genetiques impliques dans la sensibilite aux mycobacteries pourrait etre un autre moyen de controle. Il a ete suggere qu'un homologue humain du gene bcg, qui, chez la souris, controle la sensibilite innee aux infections a mycobacteries, pourrait controler la sensibilite a la lepre per se et etre localise sur le chromosome 2q, region q33-q37. Les resultats obtenus dans notre etude ne sont pas en faveur de la presence d'un gene controlant la sensibilite a la lepre per se localise sur le chromosome 2q dans les familles polynesiennes etudiees. Le diagnostic bacteriologique par pcr, le typage systematique des souches et l'identification des facteurs genetiques devraient permettre de definir de nouvelles strategies de lutte contre la lepre et la tuberculose
