Abstract:
Morphology of the scent (pheromone) glands is the first and basic step in understanding the mechanism of working of this highly evolved and integrated system of communication in insects. Leptocoris augur contains a pair of large and distinct symmetric exocrine dorsal abdominal glands (DAGs) found in the dorsal abdominal segments. The glands are simple, voluminous, sac-like and bright orange that turn brown and downsized with age. They are invested with a large and dense network of trachea and open to the exterior via minute slit shaped openings in the form of ostioles that remain permanently open to the outside. The functional specificity of these glands can be associated with the activities ranging from aggregation to sexual behaviours like courtship and mating. The mating is not restricted to a specific season, being distributed all-round the year; however, the insect prefers low and humid temperature for mating and they can be seen congregating in huge numbers when the hot summers subside and the rainy season arrives. We didn’t observe any considerable variation in size of these glands with respect to the body size in between the instars and the adults. Further, there were no significant difference between males and females in terms of the size of these DAGs.

Abstract:
Following their establishment in new communities, invasive species may cause evolutionary changes in resident native species. This is clearly true for phytophagous insects, which may adapt rapidly when utilising abundant and widespread introduced hosts. The balloon vines Cardiospermumhalicacabum and C.grandiflorum were introduced to South Africa approximately 100 years ago and are classified as minor and major weeds, respectively. Here we assess the potential evolutionary impact of these vines on native Leptocoris soapberry bug populations in Kruger National Park (KNP), using phylogenetic and morphometric analyses. We found that soapberry bugs associated with C.halicacabum are genetically and morphologically distinct from those associated with C.grandiflorum. This suggests that native soapberry bugs in KNP exhibit some degree of host preference, indicating that these vines may have had significant evolutionary consequences for these insects. The proboscis length of soapberry bugs feeding on C.halicacabum closely matched fruit size, often being longer than fruit size at the population level. These soapberry bugs are therefore well-suited to feeding on this introduced plant species.

Abstract:
Entomopathogenic fungi from the lowland soil of South Sumatera and their potential as biocontrol agents of Stink Bug (Leptocorisa oratorius (F.)). The purpose of this research was to explore and examine the potential of soil borne entomopathogenic fungi from South Sumatera as biological agents of Leptocorisa oratorius (F). Soil used for trapping entomopatogenic fungi, was taken from five locations in South Sumatera. Percentage of nymph mortality was analyzed by using analysis of variance and arranged in Completely Randomized Design. LT50­ of nymph mortality was determined with Probit Analysis. Entomopathogenic fungi found in this research were Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium sp. Stink bug mortality due to B. bassiana isolates reached 40-73.3% and Metarhizium sp. reached 56.7-70%. The results showed that Metarhizium isolates were more virulent than B. bassiana isolates. The viability of B. bassiana conidia did not decrease during sub-culturing. Sub-culturing did not influence the mortality of stink bug nymph but it prolonged the LT50­ of the stink bug.

AbstractThe biology of the predacious cricket Metioche vittaticollis (Stål) collected from rice in the Philippines was studied in the laboratory and greenhouse. The cricket preyed on the eggs of a range of insect pests of rice including Chilo suppressalis (Walker), Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée), Hydrellia philippina Ferino, Mythimna separata (Walker) and to a lesser extent on the eggs of Leptocorisa oratorius (F.). There was no predation on the eggs of Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker).

Rice seed bug (Leptocorisa acuta Thunberg) is a potential pest that at certain times become an important pest on the upland rice plants, therefore needed to control is using organic insecticide such as sweet flag rhizome extract. This research was aimed to obtain an effective concentration sweet flag rhizome extract (Acorus calamus L.) to control rice seed bug pest (Leptocorisa acuta Thunberg) on the ​​upland rice plant (Oryza sativa L.). The research was conducted at the Experimental Garden and Plant Pest Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Riau University, Pekanbaru from January to May 2018. The experimentally by using a completely randomized design (CRD), which consist of five concentration sweet flag rhizome extract treatments are 0 g.l-1 water, 20 g.l-1 water, 40 g.l-1 water, 60 g.l-1 water and 80 g.l-1 water. The treatments repeated four times, therefore, twenty experimental units. The results showed that the concentration of 80 g.l-1 water was an effective concentration to control rice seed bug with the fastest start time of death at 1,25 hours, the fastest LT50 at 30,25 hours and the total mortality rate of 87,50%. Abstract:
The rice bug, Leptocorisa acuta is one of the major and destructive pests of rice. The experiments were conducted to study on the extent of damage of rice bug, Leptocorisa acuta and to determine the efficacy of five insecticides. The experiments were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications of each treatment. From the study it was found that the infestation rate was in linear progress and the hill infestation was 5.42 to 13.75%, panicle infestation was 27.27 to 54.55%, grain infestation was 4.70 to 7.58% and partial grain infestation was 1.82 to 2.58% respectively. After using different treatments, it was found that the maximum percent of infestation was observed in control and minimum was in Malathion 57 EC treated plot. The maximum no. of grain per panicle was observed in case of Malathion 57 EC (206.4), whereas the minimum was observed in Control (172.6) plot. Malathion and Neem oil showed similar effect when yield was compared while the minimum yield was observed in control treatment. The efficacy of insecticides was ranked as Malathion 57 EC > Azadiractin 2% > Chlorpyrifos 20 EC > Voliam flexi 300 SC > Imidacloprid 17.8 SL. The efficacy of all insecticides on the infestation of rice at different time intervals indicate that all the toxicity of all the products decreases with the progress of time after application. It can be recommended that Malathion 57 EC was most effective chemical in controlling rice bug.

Attractiveness of Rice Bug (Leptocorisa oratorius F.) to Several Faunal Decaying Materials. An experiment was conducted in Yogyakarta from October 1996 to September 1997 to know (1) the attractiveness of adult male versus female rice stink bug in to decaying crab, (2) the attractiveness of the rice stink bug from the result of point-1 to five decaying materials, and (3) the volatile compounds emitted by each decaying material. For the first objective, 50 rice stink bugs (sex ratio 1:1) were released into a preference test cage for one hour. Data was then analyzed with X2 at 1 and 5%. For the second objective, five replicates of five different treatments were arranged in randomized completely block design. As many as 125 rice stink bugs were released into the central part of the cage consisting of five equal parts of attractants for one hour. Data of rice stink bug from each part was analyzed with Anova continued with Duncan's Test at 1 and 5%.. Volatile compounds emitted by each material were captured based on the method of Gamliel and Stapleton (1993) then identified with gas chromatography mass spectrophotometry (GC-MS) and (or) capillary gas chromatography. The results were that: (1) adult male rice bug was significantly more attracted to that of female in response to sixth-day-decaying-crab, (2) adult male rice bug was most attracted to sixth-day-decaying cow blood compared to four others, and (3) volatile compounds emitted by those five materials were carbon dioxide, methanol, ethanol, aceton, dimethyl sulphide, dimethyl disulphide, ammonia, acetic acid, and an unidentified compound.

Abstract Data collected on large-scale surveys around the seamounts and islands off northeastern Brazil provide information on the hyperiid amphipod populations. Thirty-six species were identified. Most of the species belong to the Infraorder Physocephalata, representing 21 genera and 13 families. Thirteen species (Vibilia australis, L. latissimus, L. macrophthalmus, L. schizogeneios, Phronima atlantica, Phrosina semilunata, Primno brevidens, Eupronoe minuta, Oxycephalus clause, Rhabdosoma whitei, Amphithyrus bispinosus, Leptocotis tenuirostris and Tetrathyrus forcipatus) have not previously been recorded in this region. The spatial distribution of the hyperiid amphipods was very patchy. Each area of these amounts and islands off northeastern Brazil has different oceanographic features and can be characterised by a clearly defined group of most abundant species.

Serangan hama walang sangit merupakan serangga yang menyerang bulir pada tanaman padi yang menjadi hampa, serangan hama walang sangit biasanya terjadi pada fase generative/masak susu, upaya yang sudah dilakukan oleh petani subak umalayu adalah penyemprotan pestisida tetapi serangan hama walang sangit terjadi kembali dikarenakan hama walang sangit hanya pergi sementara saat disemprot pestisida. Pengenalan teknologi LECOATRAP (Leptocorisa oratorius trap) diharapkan dapat mengendalian hama walang sangit yang berupa perangkap dan diberikan atraktan sebagai pemikat alami dapat mengatasi permasalah yang dihadapi oleh petani subak Umalayu sehingga hasil produksi tanaman padi dapat terjaga.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari karakter fisiologi isolat B. bassiana yang berasal dari berbagai inang dan virulensinya terhadap Spodoptera litura. Lima isolat B. bassiana yang diuji diisolasi dari hama Leptocorisa oratorius (F.) dan Hypothenemus hampei (Ferr.), rizosfer tanaman bawang daun buah kakao dan batang gandum. Karakter fisiologi yang diamati adalah daya kecambah konidia, pertumbuhan koloni, dan sporulasi, Cendawan diperbanyak pada media SDAY dan uji virulensi dilakukan terhadap larva instar II S. litura. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa daya kecambah konidia, pertumbuhan koloni dan sporulasi bervariasi antar isolat. Isolat B. bassiana yang diisolasi dari L. oratorius dan buah kakao memiliki karakter fisiologi yang lebih baik dibandingkan dengan isolat lain. Kedua isolat ini juga lebih virulen terhadap larva instar II S. litura dengan mortalitas sebesar 80 – 81,67%.

Salah satu cendawan endofit yang diuji dalam penelitian ini adalah Beauveria bassiana berasal dari isolat tanaman gandum, tanaman kopi, tanaman kakao dan cendawan Beauveria bassiana dari serangga walang sangit (Leptocorisa acuta). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kemampuan kolonisasi cendawan endofit Beauveria bassiana dari isolat gandum, kakao, kopi dan serangga walang sangit terhadap benih dan bibit cabai, untuk mendapatkan waktu yang terbaik dalam memacu perkecambahan dan pertumbuhan bibit cabai melalui metode perendaman benih dengan suspensi Beauveria bassiana selama 2, 6 dan 10 jam. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa semua isolat Beauveria bassiana mampu mengkolonisasi benih maupun bibit tanaman cabai dan Bb dari isolat gandum merupakan isolat yang terbaik memacu perkecambahan dan pertumbuhan bibit cabai dengan perendaman benih selama 6 jam.

Walang sangit (Leptocorisa oratorius Fabricus) merupakan merupakan salah satu hama penting tanaman padi. Informasi mengenai pola aktivitas harian L. oratorius masih belum banyak diketahui. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui periodisititas harian dan pola aktivitas harian dari L. oratorius pada berbagai ketinggian di wilayah Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. Penelitian dilakukan dengan melakukan penghitungan individu L. oratorius di sawah yang memasuki fase generatif setiap jam dari pukul 06.00 sampai pukul 18.00 WIB di ketinggian 40 m dpl (Trirenggo, Bantul), 130 m dpl (Seyegan dan Mlati, Sleman), dan 340 m dpl (Ngemplak dan Pakem, Sleman). Pengukuran parameter lingkungan (suhu udara, intensitas cahaya, dan kelembaban udara) juga dilakukan di setiap sawah yang diobservasi setiap 15 menit untuk rentang waktu yang sama. Analisis data dilakukan untuk memperoleh hubungan antara parameter lingkungan dan keberadaan L. oratorius. Analisis data menggunakan korelasi. Secara umum, periodisitas harian L. oratorius memiliki dua puncak (pukul 06.00–07.00 WIB dan 16.00–17.00 WIB) dan lembah (pukul 11.00–12.00 WIB). Aktivitas yang umum ditemukan sepanjang waktu adalah makan dan berkunjung. Aktivitas kawin terjadi pada pagi hari dan aktivitas berteduh pada siang hari. Faktor suhu udara dan intensitas cahaya menunjukkan korelasi negatif, sedangkan faktor kelembaban menunjukkan korelasi positif. Pada ketinggian yang berbeda, tidak ditemukan perbedaan signifikan, baik periodisitas, pola aktivitas, dan parameter lingkungan, kecuali pada ekosistem sawah pada ketinggian 130 m dpl.

Serangga hama walang sangit merupakan salah satu faktor kegagalan dalam budidaya tanaman padi. Untuk mencegah peningkatan serangan pada tanaman padi, dibutuhkan instektisida alami yang mampu meningkatkan mortalitas walang sangit. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah meningkatkan mortalitas serangga hama walang sangit melalui pemberian agen hayati larutan Beuveria bassiana pada berbagai taraf konsentrasi. Larutan Beuveria bassiana disempotkan pada walang sangit di dalam sungkup jaring pada rumpun tanaman padi. Dosis yang diberikan antara ekstrak beuveria bassiana dengan air menggunakan perbandingan 2 ml/L, 5 ml/L, 8 ml/L, dan 10 ml/L. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan dosis terbaik untuk pengendalian hama walang sangit pada tanaman padi adalah 10 ml larutan beuveria bassiana per liter air. Hal ini ditunjukkan dari mortalitas walang sangit tertinggi yaitu 76,92 % selama 12 hari pengamatan. Pada dosis 10ml/L telah menunjukkan perubahan fisik pada serangga hama yang telah mati. Cendawan beuveria bassiana muncul di seluruh jaringan tubuh walang sangit yang telah mati. Pertumbuhan cendawan mulai tampak menyelimuti serangga hama yaitu hari ke 8 menggunakan dosis 8 ml/L air dan 10 ml/L air. Di samping itu, dosis yang menunjukkan mortalitas terendah pada walang sangit adalah 2 ml larutan beuveria bassiana per liter air. The species of egg parasitoid in rice bug is necessary to know to be used as biological agent in the field. The research aimed to determine spesies of parasitoid, diversity index, parasitization level and parasitoid mortality which found in rice bug eggs in rice fields in West Sumatra. Purposive random sampling was used in this research for determining the sampling locations. Collecting eggs sampling was conducted for 1 km along transect line in sampling location. The collected eggs of 12 sampling locations then observed and identified in Laboratory of Insect Bioecology, Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University. The result showed that the kind of egg parasitoid found in the field were Hadronotus leptocorisae and Ooencyrtus malayensis with each parasitization level were 22.3 ± 11.1 % and 4.2 ± 5.3 %, each the mortality were 57.8 ± 26.4% and 30.6 ± 37%, the diversity of egg parasitoid was low with the index 0.3858 Based on Shannon-Wienner.

Pemberdayaan musuh alami hama seperti parasitoid Ooencyrtus malayensis sebagai pengendali hayati walang sangit dapat meminimalisir penggunaan insektisida kimia dan memiliki nilai positif yaitu mengendalikan hama pada stadia awal perkembangannya. Tujuan penelitian adalah: menentukan distribusi populasi parasitoid pada topografi Sumatera Barat yang berbeda, dan menentukan tingkat parasitisasi, dominansi dan mortalitas parasitoid tersebut. Pengambilan sampel telur walang sangit terparasit di lokasi padi sawah dengan metode stratifield sampling pada tiga ketinggian tempat yaitu: Sungai Sapih Kota Padang, Rendah (20 m dpl ), Tanjung Pati Kabupaten Limapuluh Kota, Sedang (500 m dpl), dan Kubang Putih Kabupaten Agam, Tinggi (975 m dpl). Sampel telur diamati di laboratorium untuk mengetahui telur yang terparasit oleh O. malayensis dan selanjutnya data dianalisis. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa distribusi parasitoid O. malayensis lebih dominan pada lokasi lokasi dataran rendah selanjutnya dataran sedang sedangkan pada dataran tinggi tidak ditemukan. Tingkat parasitisasi pada dataran rendah dan tinggi adalah 13% dan 6%. Sedangkan nilai mortalitas parasitoid O. malayensis pada dataran rendah dan tinggi adalah 17 % dan 33 %. Dari penemuan ini disimpulkan bahwa parasitoid O. malayensis menyukai lokasi dengan ketinggian rendah dri permukaan laut dan dapat memparasitisasi telur walang sangit dengan tingkat serangan yang cukup tinggi.

Upaya pengendalian walang sangit dapat dilakukan dengan memanfaatkan bahan yang berasal dari organ tanaman. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menekan aktivitas serangan hama walang sangit. Jalan Parangtritis, Kelurahan Antirogo, Kecamatan Sumbersari, Jember merupakan tempat pelaksanaan penelitian. Penelitian ini disusun dengan RAK (Rancangan Acak Kelompok) Non Faktorial, menggunakan tiga perlakuan dan diulang sembilan kali. Perlakuan meliputi P0 (insektisida sintetik bahan aktif deltametrin 1 ml/L), P1 (konsentrasi ekstrak daun pepaya 55%), dan P2 (konsentrasi ekstrak daun pepaya 75 %). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan P2 (konsentrasi 75 % ekstrak daun pepaya) mampu menekan intensitas serangan walang sangit pada pengamatan minggu ke 3 dan ke 4 dengan rata-rata intensitas serangan 26,31 % sampai 23,17 %. Selain itu, pada perlakuan P2 (75 % ekstrak daun pepaya) berpengaruh pada persentase bulir bernas per sampel dengan rerata 38,09 % dan berat padi per sampel dengan rerata 7,11 g.

The objectives of the research were to study the genetic variability of various Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. isolates andvirulence to Crocidolomia pavonana. Thirteen isolates of B. bassiana were isolated from Nilaparvata lugens (Stål),Leptocorisa oratorius (F.), Thrips sp., Hypothenemus hampei (Ferr.), Crocidolomia pavonana (F.), Spodoptera litura (F.),Chrysodeixis chalcites (Esp.), and Riptortus linearis (L.) pests from different geographical locations in Indonesia. Fourteendifferent random primers were used to amplify DNA. Clustering of isolates were obtained using Unweight Pair GroupMethod Avarage (UPGMA). The results showed that only OPA08 primer generated more polymorphic DNA fragments.Result of clustering analysis showed that B. bassiana isolates forms two groups having genetic similarity equal to 55%.Clustering of isolates does not correlate to host type nor geographic origin. Mortality of second instar C. pavonana larvaewas dependent on the fungal isolates. At a concentration of 108 conidia/ml, isolate Bb-La2 had the highest virulence whichcaused 65% mortality of 2nd instar larvae. Isolates of B. bassiana is virulent against C. pavonana larvae present in the samegenotype group.

Penanggulangan hama ini sering dilakukan dengan Penggunaan insektisida sintetik secara intensif yang berpotensi memacu resistensi, sehingga deteksi resistensi secara dini perlu dilakukan agar status resistensi hama dapat diketahui lebih awal yang bermanfaat dalam menyusun strategi pengendalian hama resisten. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Desa Antirogo, Jember yang menggunakan insektisida sintetik berbahan aktif Fipronil dan di Desa Lombok Kulon, Bondowoso yang menggunakan musuh alami Beauveria bassiana. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari status resistensi walang sangit terhadap Fipronil, kepekaannya terhadap B. bassiana, perkembangan populasi dan intensitas serangan. Data populasi dan intensitas serangan ditampilkan dalam bentuk box-plot. Nisbah resistensi dianalisis dengan Regresi probit. Perbedaan populasi dan intensitas serangan kedua lokasi menggunakan uji Mann-Whitney. Hubungan antara populasi dan intensitas serangan menggunakan korelasi Spearman. Hasil penelitian adalah walang sangit Antirogo telah resisten terhadap insektisida berbahan aktif Fipronil. dengan Nisbah Resistensi 9,33. Walang sangit Antirogo peka terhadap B. bassiana dengan Nisbah Resistensi 0,28. Intensitas serangan walang sangit Antirogo pada 9 MST dan 10 MST adalah 9,38 ± 15,53 % dan 5,83 ± 11,06%. Intensitas serangan walang sangit Lombok Kulon pada 9 MST dan 10 MST adalah 2,36 ± 5,85% dan 1,50 ± 5,37%. Populasi walang sangit Antirogo pada 9 dan 10 MST adalah 0,57 ± 0,94 dan 0,37 ± 0,66.
