Abstract:
ORIGINS OF IDIOMS Many idiomatic expressions, in their original use, were not figurative but had literal meaning. Also, sometimes the attribution of a literal meaning can change as the phrase becomes disconnected from its original roots, leading to a folk etymology. However, at the beginning all the have been motivated: comparison, metaphor, images or clichés, some have completely lost their first meaning, others are still addressed to the speaker’s imagination and suggest a relationship with their etymology. Key words: origin, etymology, expression, translation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The intex lexical parser processes linguistic units of four formal types: morphemes, simple words, compound words and frozen expressions. Frozen expressions are units spelled in the form of non-contiguous sequences of tokens (eg. take ... into account), and their recognition requires computation traditionally performed by syntactic parsers. Over 30,000 French frozen expressions have been described in the tables Cxx of the lexicon-grammar. We show how to use these tables to automatically construct FSTs that are capable of recognizing and tagging frozen expressions in texts. Representing the result as tags poses some formal problems that we discuss.

Abstract:
Résumé Dans cet article, nous nous proposons d’étudier l’intensité repérée dans des constructions figées en grec moderne, en dégageant les caractéristiques de l’intensité. Nous mettons l’accent sur l’intensité dans a) les déterminants figés qu’ils s’agissent de modifieurs figés facultatifs (για δέσιµο‘à attacher’ [à lier]) ou obligatoires (ηράκλεια δύναµη‘force herculéenne’, µνήµη ελέφαντα ‘mémoire d’éléphant’, βλέµµα ðου σκοτώνει ‘regard qui tue’) ou bien les prédéterminants composés figés (ωκεανός δακρύων‘océan de larmes’) ; b) les suites du type NN (συναυλία-µαµούθ ‘concert mammouth’) et c) les locutions verbales (κρέµοµαι από τα χείλη του ‘se pencher de ses lèvres’ [faire très attention]). Afin de résoudre quelques problèmes de traduction liés à l’intensité, nous employons la notion théorique de représentation métalinguistique (Buvet, à paraître b), pour proposer des traductions correctes pour les expressions figées qui désignent l’intensité.

Abstract:
This thesis aims at analyzing Spanish to French translation strategies of fixed expressions. In thisperspective, we have gathered a contrastive corpus of fixed expressions in order to question their semantic, syntactic and pragmatic properties and to discuss phraseology’s fundamental notions such as fixation, opacity or non-compositionality. We also introduce semantic analysis tools : distinctions between lexicalcompositionality and global compositionality, on one hand, and between lexical scene and real scene, onanother hand. The second part of the study proposes a descriptive typology of translation operations observed in thecorpus offering a global view of the strategies adopted by the translators that allows reflection on questionssuch as the equivalence or methods in fixed expressions translation. This typology reveals the width and thegradualism of the variation and correspondence spectrum that we find among fixed expressions. After introducing the theoretical framework and the state of art in the previous chapters, the last part of thethesis is entirely dedicated to the translation dimension of fixed expressions. We examine here theconstrative corpus in order to question the notion of equivalence and to propose a more precisecharacterization of it. In order to have strong and operational criteria for an optimal translation, we propose atranslation methodology based on the study of the source expressions as a mean to identifying translationdifficulties whether they are specific or not of the object

Abstract:
In this PhD thesis, we present the results of an experimental research on 150 Italian-speaking adults studying French in the university context: the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan, La Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Palermo. The aim of this study was to contribute to the analysis of the semantic processing of lexicalization and to the didactics of phraseology in French as a foreign language. We have thus been able to advance and verify hypotheses explaining the process of lexicalization in order to give, on the one hand, tools to teachers for its didactisation and, on the other hand, means for learners for its appropriation. This work allowed us to better understand the identification and processing of different types of phraseologies, to identify and analyze translations and translation errors produced by students. To do this, we submitted two questionnaires: the first one, called "self-assessment" questionnaire, was intended to better understand our sample. The second questionnaire, called "Expressions", focused on the treatment, translation, and comprehension of seven phraseological constructs using eight exercises inspired by phraseodidactics and cognitive semantics, including construction grammars approach, conceptual metaphor and motivation approach

Abstract:
The linguistic study of the various forms of paroemia identified in the modern novel insists on structural peculiarities associated to proverbs and tries to bring definitions related to syntax and morphology. The rest of the analysis dedicates to the integration of proverbs in literature and the evolution of the Refranero acknowledged therefore. Phraseology is a relatively young discipline which cannot be handled without a previous sound theorical and terminological research. A linguistic analysis of established types of sentences aims at the identification of peculiari6es and characteristics of the phraseologistic system offering a consistent vision of the insertion of these locutions within the literary context. If addressed to from the stylistic point of view it appears that these formulae utilise stylistic standards but also and most of all basic components of poetry as rimes and rythm. Thus making easy their integration in texts, which rely upon proverbs and set expressions to achieve precise narrative and rethorical objectives

Abstract:
The objectives of this paper are twofold: the first is to illustrate the potential of the World Wide Web as a new or complementary resource for researching various linguistic phenomena, while the second objective is to apply the idea of the “Web as corpus” to a concrete example – in this case, the study of lexical variation in French idiomatic expressions. The first part of this paper examines the idea of using the World Wide Web as an exploitable corpus for linguistic research and provides an overview of related theoretical and practical issues. The major advantages and drawbacks of using the Web as a linguistic corpus are surveyed. Two different approaches to using the Web for corpus linguistics are also described. The latter half of the paper presents results of a small-scale study conducted to investigate lexical variation in seven selected French idiomatic expressions. An online concordancing tool called WebCorp is used to search the Web and generate concordances for analysis. The theory behind the notions of lexical frozenness and variation are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:
Although there are units larger than the word in language, linguists have not been able to agree on a definition of these units. This study examines a variety of notions, relevant in the study of ”fixed” or ”frozen” expressions in contemporary French. Criteria such as memorization, unique context, non-compositionality, marked syntax, lexical blocking and grammatical blocking are analyzed in detail. A closer look at them reveals that in fact only one of them, lexical blocking, is both necessary and sufficient in the description of a fixed expression. The other criteria are, however, also important to the notion of ”fixedness”. It may well be that the criteria that have often been proposed in linguistic literature would benefit from being organized in a family resemblance rather than being used as necessary and sufficient conditions.

Abstract:
This study presents "frozen" expressions related to the support verb to be in modern greek. Our approach is based on z. S. Harris'transformational grammar whose methodological frame has been worked out in french by m. Gross. We have mainly studied prepositional structures, but also structures in which the predicate noun is in the genitive or dative case. After having described the global structures and lexical composition of those expressions, we classify them according to their syntactical structure. A description of the distributional and transformational properties of the 2200 collected idioms is given in the 9 binary matrices (tables) that we have worked out. The variables and the operators entailed in the structures are also represented : it thus constitutes the lexicon-grammar of those expressions whoses entries are not words, but whole sentences. Our study is morphological as far as it describes the morphological behaviour of parts of speech ; the study is also syntactical as those morphological relations are treated syntactically

Abstract:
Among the main components of the language which one must acquire to express oneself, in addition to the (single, compound or derived) words, one can find blocs of fixed words with non predictable meaning, commonly known as frozen expressions. To account for the facts of language in connection with frozenness, contemporary linguistics gives particular importance to two fundamental approaches (sometimes in a complementary way). The first is founded on semantic considerations and the second on syntactic ones. Alternatively, the principal objective of this work is to combine the two approaches, while it will further illustrate the idea that frozenness, at the same time, is also a matter of semantic and syntactic aspects. Thus, we will study the semantic and syntactic (transformational, distributional) properties of frozen expressions related to human body, in French and in Arabic. Yet, it will argue that in spite of the universality of the phenomenon of frozenness, each language has its own mechanisms of frozenness and that their nature and their degree vary from one language to another

Abstract:
This thesis makes a comparison between the idioms of the BCMS languages (Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin, Serbian) on the one side, and the French language on the other, in the domain of translation. In the first segment, the study begins with the definition of idioms and the criteria for fixation. After the explanation of differences among BCMS languages, we present the corpus of idioms in BCMS and in French, with their distribution within different cultural domains, while distinguishing among three types of idiomatic expressions: literal, transparent, and opaque. The second part is devoted to the comparative analysis of idioms in BCMS and French. It begins with a record of their different origins, after which we examine the cultural foundations of expressions, depending on different domains. We develop a comparative linguistic analysis of idioms, giving details on various compound names and phrases (verbal, adjectival, etc.), and integrating the rhetorical dimension, including metaphors. Finally, after an overall focus on translating, we examine issues found in interpretation and translation solutions for different idioms between French and BCMS

Abstract:

Abstract:
Fixed expressions are a problematic entity at both levels: at notional-phraseological level and at translatological level. The purpose of this study, which focuses on French and its translation into Arabic, is to delimit this entity by attempting to delimit its boundaries and to attribute to its inherent defining characteristics. Thus, at first, we approach the question from two points of view, semantico-syntactical and cognitive while subjecting the basic axioms of our definitions to an in-depth examination in order to verify its relevance. Then, we will deal with set expressions from a translatological point of view, with the aim of developing a method of translating fixed expressions working on both semantic and stylistic levels. This method could serve as a support clarifying the crucial points to be taken into consideration in the translating operation and would take into account the disadvantages and defects that can be manifested therein

Abstract:

Abstract:
Research into the origins of music and language can shed new light on musical representation, including program music and more recent incarnations such as data sonification. Although sonification and program music have different aims — one scientific explication, the other artistic expression — similar techniques, relying on human and animal biology, cognition, and culture, underlie both. Examples include Western composers such as Beethoven and Berlioz, to more recent figures like Messiaen, Stockhausen and Tom Johnson, as well as music theory, semiotics, biology, and data sonifications by myself and others. The common thread connecting these diverse examples is the use of human musicality, in the bio- musicological sense, for representation. Links between musicality and representation — dimensions like high/low, long/short, near/far, etc., bridging the real and abstract — can prove useful for researchers, sound designers, and composers.

Abstract:
Coiled tubing (CT) technology has been developing in recent years. Analyzing the factors that affect CT fatigue life and getting a more accurate life prediction are of great significance. The work process of CT is one that goes through large deformation and multi-axial low-cycle fatigue, which suggests that the strain-life method should be used. Considering tri-axial strain state, this paper uses finite element software to fit the expression of strains in three directions so as to get equivalent strain. This paper also carries out tensile and fatigue experiments to get necessary fatigue parameters for calculating CT life. Comparing to the experiment results, the error is within 10%, which is considered to be acceptable. Based on the life prediction model above and field information, the software for predicting CT life is developed, through which the operators can store and recall data as well as export and print figures and tables. Besides, one can predict CT residual life before each operation and it shows the distribution of damage along the tube, providing basis for CT removal and repair.

Abstract:
A theoretical analysis has been made to examine feasibilities of a proposed Space Solar Power System module in thermal aspects. Analyzed first is the system thermal balance. Obtained analysis results are normalized by the electromagnetic transmitting power to express the specific cold plate area, the specific radiator area, and the specific heat rejection. Equations for the cold plate design are derived from relations describing the boiling heat transfer and the two-phase heat transport in a modeled evaporator. Solutions are arranged to determine the equivalent hydraulic diameter and the heat transfer surface are density. Equations governing the radial heat transfer, the axial heat transport, and the heat rejection are solved to give the total condenser length and the dimensionless active surface area of a condensing radiator. A fluid loop pressure loss model and a system mass breakdown model are also presented. All the expressions and models are coded to form a computer program available to parametric design studies. Computations have been done with the solar concentration ratio and the cell base plate temperature as main parameters of interest. Numerical results are graphically shown in the figures to contribute to design practices of a 100 kW power module composed of equally sized seven submodules.

Abstract:
Puppetry is the oldest form of the virtual reality and has a strong tradition as a theatrical art. The aim of this research project is to create digital puppeteering system which translates gestural acts into live and expressive control of virtual 3D models including in real-time 3D sound. I will devise a model of practice that extends our understanding and notion of the digital puppet. It seeks to establish new practical and conceptual relations between the puppet and new technologies in the framework of puppet theatre. The practical aim is to focus on the special spirit of animated 3D models and silhouettes and to contribute to cultural preservation and fixing of the tradition(s) of puppet theatre. This project will explore the potential of puppetry as a musical expressive medium by new media, including the sensor, 3D sound system, digital projection, and 3D simulation. The conceptual aim of the project is to integrate traditional and new forms of puppetry through different interfaces that will advance traditional forms of cultural expressions. This project focuses on analogies and differences between different puppet theatre traditions. A key aspect is the relationship between the Western puppetry and the Eastern puppetry traditions, and the impact of the resulting cross- cultural dialogue in dramatic performances with figures. In seeking to identify the potential effects of digital puppetry, I will obtain a new vocabulary for gestural musical performance and can develop guidelines that can be used for future creative theatrical practice in the field of digital puppetry. The aim of my research project is to design an interactive digital puppetry system which is sensitive to gestural acts of puppeteers and enriches the performances as a musical expressive medium on its own right. Such a system will serve creative possibilities using digitalisations of old forms by puppet restoration and preserving its instructions. Through analyses of European and Japanese traditional puppet theatres, I will achieve a new cross-cultural form of puppetry. Thus, I investigate how acts and music of puppetry can be restored from not only actual traditional. puppet theatre, but also archives and documents, then performed and remediated with digital performance technology. Furthermore, my investigation includes in transitioning layers between old and new media — objects of puppet theatre and digital simulation – alternative action and transformation. I believe that the digital re-presentation of traditional puppetry is one of the most efficient and effective ways to impart to later generations and also to revitalise the arts of puppet theatres. An orientation toward new medias will enable me to explore 'tradition' and the puppet as a technological media object. Through my digital practice and an encounter with old, lost, forgotten puppet theatre, I set out to create something new.

Abstract:
Space solar power systems (SSPSs) lately planned in Japan are introduced with a result of conceptual design studies. Solar energy collected in orbit is converted into electrical energy and is transmitted to the Earth by way of microwaves or lasers. Systems of our concern are thereby Microwave-based SSPS (MSSPS) and Laser-based SSPS (LSSPS). The MSSPS basically consists of solar concentrators and a disk-like power module with I- or Y-shaped radiator. The power module is one-sidedly coated with solar cells and is internally loaded with magnetrons. The LSSPS is composed of a sun-oriented parabolic mirror and a planar radiator put on the focal line, where an array of laser devices are set up. For any of the two, system feasibilities critically depend on possibilities of size/mass reduction and heat rejection. Radiative heat transfer/exchange analyses are made considering the system thermal balance. Analysis results are written in fractional form upon the specified transmission power P. The required area A and the resulted mass M are thus simply calculated from the specific area a and the specific mass m, respectively defined as A/P and M/P. All such performance indices concerning the concentrator/mirror, the generator, the radiator, and the system are expressed in algebraic form suited to numerical computations. Empirically obtained polynomial expressions are presented to determine the cell/magnetron/laser efficiencies from the specified temperature because the system size may be highly temperature-dependent. Performance calculations have been parametrically done with various combinations of the reference temperature and the concentration ratio. Obtained numerical results are graphically shown in the figures to indicate specific system/subsystem area/mass values. Such specific values are submitted to quantitative discussion in two demonstrative design cases. Design objects are then a low-earth orbiting MSSPS of 100 kW class and a geostationary-orbiting LSSPS of 1 MW class. System feasibilities of the two are mainly examined from thermal and configurational points of view.

Abstract:
El Teatro de Sciacca representa, probablemente, el más notable ejemplo de arquitectura le corbuseriana en Italia.***The Sciacca Popular Theatre by Giuseppe Samonà and his son Alberto - two important figures of Italian architecture - is one of the most significant Italian building of the second half of the 20th century. Inaugurated in 2015, after a forty years long construction, the building has an original layout with two auditoriums; composed by three big volumes (a parallelepiped, a cone and a pyramid) and expresses an architecture of image, an idea of space determined by pure forms and using a single material (the raw concrete). The use of three archetypal forms is a return to the origin, an idea al- most classical and rational of architecture; at the same time is the evocation of an archaic perfection. Within this context, the use of raw concrete is also fundamental. Understood as primitive material, it participates to the expression of stability and durability across the building. As a result, the building is converted to an icon that sits in the landscape like a monument. In this sense, this architecture is a tribute to Le Corbusier, built through the interpretation of the great master language. The Sciacca Theatre represents, probably, the most remarkable example of architecture by Le Corbusier in Italy.

Yatsymirska, Mariya. SOCIAL EXPRESSION IN MULTIMEDIA TEXTS. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11072.

Full text
Abstract:
The article investigates functional techniques of extralinguistic expression in multimedia texts; the effectiveness of figurative expressions as a reaction to modern events in Ukraine and their influence on the formation of public opinion is shown. Publications of journalists, broadcasts of media resonators, experts, public figures, politicians, readers are analyzed. The language of the media plays a key role in shaping the worldview of the young political elite in the first place. The essence of each statement is a focused thought that reacts to events in the world or in one’s own country. The most popular platform for mass information and social interaction is, first of all, network journalism, which is characterized by mobility and unlimited time and space. Authors have complete freedom to express their views in direct language, including their own word formation. Phonetic, lexical, phraseological and stylistic means of speech create expression of the text. A figurative word, a good aphorism or proverb, a paraphrased expression, etc. enhance the effectiveness of a multimedia text. This is especially important for headlines that simultaneously inform and influence the views of millions of readers. Given the wide range of issues raised by the Internet as a medium, research in this area is interdisciplinary. The science of information, combining language and social communication, is at the forefront of global interactions. The Internet is an effective source of knowledge and a forum for free thought. Nonlinear texts (hypertexts) – «branching texts or texts that perform actions on request», multimedia texts change the principles of information collection, storage and dissemination, involving billions of readers in the discussion of global issues. Mastering the word is not an easy task if the author of the publication is not well-read, is not deep in the topic, does not know the psychology of the audience for which he writes. Therefore, the study of media broadcasting is an important component of the professional training of future journalists. The functions of the language of the media require the authors to make the right statements and convincing arguments in the text. Journalism education is not only knowledge of imperative and dispositive norms, but also apodictic ones. In practice, this means that there are rules in media creativity that are based on logical necessity. Apodicticity is the first sign of impressive language on the platform of print or electronic media. Social expression is a combination of creative abilities and linguistic competencies that a journalist realizes in his activity. Creative self-expression is realized in a set of many important factors in the media: the choice of topic, convincing arguments, logical presentation of ideas and deep philological education. Linguistic art, in contrast to painting, music, sculpture, accumulates all visual, auditory, tactile and empathic sensations in a universal sign – the word. The choice of the word for the reproduction of sensory and semantic meanings, its competent use in the appropriate context distinguishes the journalist-intellectual from other participants in forums, round tables, analytical or entertainment programs. Expressive speech in the media is a product of the intellect (ability to think) of all those who write on socio-political or economic topics. In the same plane with him – intelligence (awareness, prudence), the first sign of which (according to Ivan Ogienko) is a good knowledge of the language. Intellectual language is an important means of organizing a journalistic text. It, on the one hand, logically conveys the author’s thoughts, and on the other – encourages the reader to reflect and comprehend what is read. The richness of language is accumulated through continuous self-education and interesting communication. Studies of social expression as an important factor influencing the formation of public consciousness should open up new facets of rational and emotional media broadcasting; to trace physical and psychological reactions to communicative mimicry in the media. Speech mimicry as one of the methods of disguise is increasingly becoming a dangerous factor in manipulating the media. Mimicry is an unprincipled adaptation to the surrounding social conditions; one of the most famous examples of an animal characterized by mimicry (change of protective color and shape) is a chameleon. In a figurative sense, chameleons are called adaptive journalists. Observations show that mimicry in politics is to some extent a kind of game that, like every game, is always conditional and artificial.
