Abstract:
A nonautonomous Leslie-Gower type food chain model with time delays is investigated. It is proved the general nonautonomous system is permanent and globally asymptotically stable under some appropriate conditions. Furthermore, if the system is periodic one, some sufficient conditions are established, which guarantee the existence, uniqueness, and global asymptotic stability of a positive periodic solution of the system. The conditions for the permanence, global stability of system, and the existence, uniqueness of positive periodic solution depend on delays; so, time delays are profitless.

Abstract:
Allee effect, as an important biological phenomenon, has been considered in many ecosystems, whereas, its influence on interactions of three or more species is little investigated. In this paper we modify a three-species Leslie-Gower type food chain system by incorporating the strong Allee effect into the source. Our results show that the existence of Allee effect contributes to the occurrence of more complex dynamics of the system, including Hopf, saddle-node, transcritical, saddle-node-Hopf, period-doubling, and period-halving bifurcations and chaos.

Abstract:
The avoidance strategy of prey to predation and the predation strategy for predators are important topics in evolutionary biology. Both prey and predators adjust their behaviors in order to obtain the maximal benefits and to raise their biomass for each. Therefore, this paper is aimed at studying the impact of prey’s fear and group defense against predation on the dynamics of the food-web model. Consequently, in this paper, a mathematical model that describes a tritrophic Leslie-Gower food-web system is formulated. Sokol-Howell type of function response is adapted to describe the predation process due to the prey’s group defensive capability. The effects of fear due to the predation process are considered in the first two levels. It is assumed that the generalist predator grows logistically using the Leslie-Gower type of growth function. All the solution properties of the model are studied. Local dynamics behaviors are investigated. The basin of attraction for each equilibrium is determined using the Lyapunov function. The conditions of persistence of the model are specified. The study of local bifurcation in the model is done. Numerical simulations are implemented to show the obtained results. It is watched that the system is wealthy in its dynamics including chaos. The fear factor works as a stabilizing factor in the system up to a specific level; otherwise, it leads to the extinction of the predator. However, increasing the prey’s group defense leads to extinction in predator species.

Abstract:
We investigate a realistic three-species food-chain model, with generalist top predator. The model based on a modified version of the Leslie-Gower scheme incorporates mutual interference in all the three populations and generalizes several other known models in the ecological literature. We show that the model exhibits finite time blowup in certain parameter range and for large enough initial data. This result implies that finite time blowup is possible in a large class of such three-species food-chain models. We propose a modification to the model and prove that the modified model has globally existing classical solutions, as well as a global attractor. We reconstruct the attractor using nonlinear time series analysis and show that it pssesses rich dynamics, including chaos in certain parameter regime, whilst avoiding blowup in any parameter regime. We also provide estimates on its fractal dimension as well as provide numerical simulations to visualise the spatiotemporal chaos.

Abstract:
Abstract The essay entitled “Food Imagery in Lesley Saunders’ Poetry” expands upon various food issues that will be approached via Gaston Bachelard’s aesthetic theory which situates us in the proximity of a sensible point of objectivity further enlarged upon from a phenomenological perspective that merges the exterior substantiality of food with the reality of imagination. The acquired intimate connotations of the poetess’ food environment are tackled in terms of the inner/outer opposition and the Platonic dialectics that involves old versus new, good versus evil, plenty versus scarcity, revealing the dynamic virtues of “roots,” the emblem of the diversity of food. Our approach to the house, where various types of food are being prepared, in relation to its pivotal functions of dwelling, preparing food and sharing it, turns both the house and food into the unfailing communality and sociality constructs of all places and ages.

Abstract:

This dissertation is dedicated to an exploration of "Wood's Method" -- a novel approach to fitting demographic transition matrices to age and sex population count data. Demographic transition matrices, otherwise known as "Leslie matrices," are extensively used to forecast population by age, sex, and other characteristics. Our implementation of Wood's Method simplifies the creation of age and sex population forecasts greatly by reducing the amount of data necessary to create a demographic transition matrix. Furthermore, the method can be used to infer a demographic component of change (one of migration, fertility, or mortality) if the other two components are specified.

In Chapter One, we introduce Wood's Method, as well as showing some illustrative examples. In Chapter Two, we evaluate the accuracy of Wood's Method by crossvalidating age and sex specific forecasts for 3,120 US counties. In Chapter Three, we present a simpler, alternative derivation of Wood's Method with an extensive example and show some extensions to the method made possible by this new formulation. In Chapter Four, we use the method to examine migration rates at the US County level and show important results regarding clustering of migration. Each chapters is independent of the others, but should be read in order.

To our knowledge, this is the first time Wood's Method has been used for forecasting human populations. We hope to show its viability as a forecasting and analysis method and sketch directions for further research.

West, Thomas Andrew. ""A Genuinely Missionary Encounter"| The Proper Lens for Viewing Lesslie Newbigin's Theology." Thesis, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10277007.

Full text
Abstract:

This study argues that Lesslie Newbigin’s doctrine of Scripture is best seen when viewed through the lens of his theology of missionary encounter. For this point to be made, two important aspects of Newbigin’s thought must be systematized and related to each another. First, it will be shown that Newbigin has a theology of missionary encounter. Second, Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter will be shown to function as a lens to view his theology in general and his doctrine of Scripture in particular. Chapter 1 explains the research topic and the limits of the thesis. Chapter 2 shows the presence of Newbigin’s theological ambition that led to his theology of missionary encounter. Chapter 3 reveals the formative role that Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter had on his theological method and theological project as a whole. Chapter 4 builds upon the previous two chapters by using Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter as a lens to view his doctrine of Scripture. Chapter 5 considers what the nature of Newbigin’s theology reveals about Newbigin as a theologian.

Chapter 1, “Introducing The Research Topic,” introduces Lesslie Newbigin and the thesis of this research. The purpose of this chapter is to provide the reader with the research focus, understanding of key concepts, and the delimits of the issues involved. First, attention is given to understanding the place of this dissertation within the literature and the personal journey that led to the writing of this dissertation. This chapter will highlight the importance of the topic by explaining the ways it contributes to the field of Newbigin studies as well as the discipline of theology in general.

Chapter 2 is an overview of Newbigin’s life and work. This chapter demonstrates the presence of Newbigin’s theological ambition to engage in a missionary encounter that resulted in his theology of missionary encounter. By examining Newbigin’s missionary theology, this chapter outlines the development of Newbigin’s theological ambition throughout his life. It is shown that his ambition to engage in a missionary encounter reached maturity later in his life as he articulated his theology of missionary encounter. At its core, Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter is aimed at helping the Church recover the gospel, indwell the biblical story, and challenge the axioms of the culture with the axioms of the Bible in order to live as a faithful witness. The missionary encounter, this challenging of competing stories, takes place within the individual lives of members in a local congregation.

In order to show that Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter best mediates his doctrine of scripture, consideration must be given to understanding the form and function of his theology as a whole. Chapter 3, “Newbigin’s Theological Method,” explores the structure of Newbigin’s theology. After surveying the structure of Newbigin’s theological method as a whole, the focus of this chapter narrows on a series of unpublished articles which Newbigin thought of as a sort of Dogmatics of his thought. The contextual nature of Newbigin’s theology makes it clear that a robust understanding of what Newbigin believed about anything must be understood in relation to his desire to bring the gospel story to bear on the cultural story. The intended point is that Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter has a permeating presence throughout the form and function of his theology as a whole.

Chapter 4, “Systematizing Newbigin’s Doctrine of Scripture,” presents a systematization of Newbigin’s doctrine of Scripture with the help of his theology of missionary encounter. Building upon the previous two chapters, this chapter utilizes Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter as a lens through which his doctrine of Scripture can be understood. The clarity of Newbigin’s doctrine of Scripture emerges as his theology refracted through the lens of his theology of missionary encounter. Newbigin’s doctrine of Scripture is presented in one summary sentence followed by seven categorical statements which are intended to exegete the summary sentence. Observing Newbigin’s missionary encounter between gospel and culture provides the proper lens for seeing what Newbigin believed about Scripture.

Chapter 5, “Newbigin’s Public and Prophetic Theology,” raises the question about what the nature of Newbigin’s theology reveals about Newbigin as a theologian. This chapter provides a concluding summary of the research involved and clears some paths for future research. While demonstrating the usefulness of Newbigin as a dialogue partner this chapter provides some cautions for appropriating Newbigin’s thought uncritically. Combining these different levels of analysis highlights the central role of Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter in his theology.

Barandiarán, Valenzuela Brisa, and Peves Lucero Elizabeth Enriquez. "Butch words for butch feelings”: Traducción queer y colaborativa de fragmentos de la novela Stone butch blues de Leslie Feinberg." Bachelor's thesis, Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC), 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10757/652240.

Abstract:
In the history of trans subjectivities represented in literature, Stone Butch Blues (1993) by Leslie Feinberg was a milestone that has been translated into over ten languages. Nevertheless, it has yet to be published in Spanish, a clear example of the lack of visibility these subjectivities have in literature available in this language. In light of this situation, this study proposes a queer and collaborative translation of the novel to Spanish, where the queer aspect is positioned as a political act that seeks to question sex and gender representations and power structures in translation, while the collaborative aspect will be used as a means to accomplish these objectives through the inscription of the Peruvian LGBT+ community’s subjectivities in the target text. The translation will be analyzed as a process and a product. A pre-translation analysis, non-structured interviews and focus groups, with the assistance of the collaborators, will be used to determine to what extent the interrelation between a queer and collaborative approach in the translation will allow us to achieve the political purposes of the novel. The study will also be a response to the lack of academic publications on the joint use of these two approaches.

The objective of this study was to characterize the feeding system and to evaluate the nutritional status and financial efficiency of dairy cows belonging to dairy herds of the Maranhão east mesoregion, according to two periods of the year (water and dry) and two production strata L / day and Greater, ≥150 L / day). They were selected 19 Units with Milk Production (UPL) that received a visit during the period of the waters and a visit during the dry period. Data were collected by conference and samples of the ingredients supplied (quantities and prices), milk (total production, price, and milk samples). It was possible to identify that the UPL presented pasture feeding and concentrated food use in both periods of the year. There were no differences between water and dry matter for the daily availability of DM per animal (P = 0.85), total forage DM intake per day (P = 0.66) and neither with respect to live weight (P = 0, (P = 0.90) and CP consumption (P = 0.16), which allowed the absence of a difference in NDF consumption from forage (P = 0.90). Between the periods there was a difference between the price of milk traded between the UPLs, leaving the dry period with the highest value (P <0.05). The item revenue less cost with feed (RMCA) per liter of milk produced, presented better result during the dry period when compared to that obtained during the period of the waters. Feeding of the herds belonging to the UPL of the eastern Maranhão mesoregion is predominantly pasture, with food supplementation concentrated throughout the year and higher in the dry season. The higher supply of nitrogenous concentrated ingredients in the waters increased the NUL concentrations and reduced the lactose concentration. The price of milk undergoes oscillation within the year, being higher during the dry period, a fact that influenced the increase of gross income and the RMCA in this period. However, the financial assessment, considering the original production costs and the standardization of a single milk price, eliminated differences in RMCA between the periods.

Abstract:
AbstractSophia De Morgan met Robert Ellis when he was a student at Cambridge, and ever-after remembered him to possess an “almost perfect moral nature.” Her response to the sickly young man was typical of the ways Victorians responded to invalids like John Keats or Elizabeth Barrett Browning. But Ellis was neither a poet nor a woman. In the case of Ellis, the evidence of his moral character lay in the facility with which he practiced mathematics. Throughout the eighteenth century, the success of Newtonian cosmology served the English as a guarantee that in mathematics they could align their thoughts with the mind of God and by so doing truly understand the world in which they lived. As they moved into the nineteenth century, however, this assurance of unity between the human and the divine was being challenged on many fronts. When Sophia attributed “an almost perfect moral character” to the sickly young man, she was recognizing him as an ally in a battle for England’s soul that centered on the nature of mathematics.

Abstract:
AbstractThe second half of this volume consists of transcriptions selected for the most part from those papers of Robert Leslie Ellis that are preserved in Trinity College Library in Cambridge. These papers do not form a discrete archive, rather they comprise a survival, or more accurately several separate survivals, among the papers of the great mid-century Master of the College, William Whewell. Whewell had married Ellis’s sister Everina Frances, widow of Sir Gilbert Affleck, in 1858. It is surely through this close family connection that the papers of the two brothers-in-law became so entwined. The importance of Whewell’s own papers may have played a hand in long-term preservation of Ellis’s literary remains, whilst Whewell’s position as Master of Trinity made the College’s Wren Library a safe repository for the large archive he left on his death, including the Ellis material he had inherited from his second wife.

Full text
Abstract:
Flow-alignment of sheared nematic polymers occurs in various flow-concentration regimes. Analytical descriptions of shear-aligned nematic monodomains have a long history across continuum, mesoscopic and mean-field kinetic models, sacrificing precision at each finer scale. Continuum Leslie-Ericksen theory applies to highly concentrated, weak flows of small molecular weight polymers, giving an explicit macroscopic alignment angle formula dependent only on Miesowicz viscosities. Mesoscopic tensor models apply at all concentrations and shear rates, but explicit “Leslie angle” formulas exist only in the weak shear limit (Cocchini et. al, 90; Bhave et. al, 93; Wang, 97; Rienacker and Hess, 99; Maffettone et. al, 00; Forest and Wang, 02; Forest et. al, 02c; Grecov and Rey, 02), with distinct behavior in dilute versus concentrated regimes. Exact probability distribution functions (pdf’s) of kinetic theory do not exist for highly concentrated nematic states, even without flow, although appealing flow-aligned approximations have been derived (Kuzuu and Doi, 83; Kuzuu and Doi, 84; Semenov, 83; Semenov, 86; Archer and Larson, 95; Kroger and Seller, 95), which offer a molecular theory basis for the Leslie alignment angle. A simpler problem concerns the dilute concentration regime where the unique quiescent equilibrium is isotropic, corresponding to a constant pdf, and whose weak shear deformation is robust to mesoscopic closure approximation (Forest and Wang, 02; Forest et. al, 02c): steady, flow-aligning, weakly anisotropic, and biaxial. The purpose of this paper is to explicitly construct the weakly anisotropic branch of stationary pdf’s by a weak-shear asymptotic expansion of kinetic theory. A second-moment pdf projection confirms mesoscopic model predictions, and further yields explicit Leslie angle and degree of alignment formulas in terms of molecular parameters and normalized shear rate.

Full text
Abstract:
In the light of rapidly increasing applications of large-eddy-simulations (LES) it is deemed necessary to impose some quality assessment measures for such studies. The validation of LES is difficult because of the fact that both the sub-grid scale (sgs) model contribution and numerical discretization errors are functions of the grid resolution. In this study various index of quality measures, here and after referred to as LES_IQ, are proposed and applied to some case studies. The recommended LES_IQ is based on the concept of Richardson’s extrapolation. It is postulated that in practical applications of LES numerical dissipation will always be a significant part of the overall dissipation and it must be accounted for in any assessment of the quality of LES results. It is further suggested that an LES_IQ of 75% to 85% can be considered adequate for most engineering applications that typically occur at high Reynolds numbers; LES-IQ greater than 90% can be classified as DNS.

Full text
Abstract:
Professor Leslie R. Marchant was a Western Australian historian of international renown. Richly educated as a child in political philosophy and critical reason, Marchant’s understandings of western political philosophies were deepened in World War Two when serving with an international crew of the merchant navy. After the war’s end, Marchant was appointed as a Protector of Aborigines in Western Australia’s Depart of Native Affairs. His passionate belief in Enlightenment ideals, including the equality of all people, was challenged by his experiences as a Protector. Leaving that role, he commenced his studies at The University of Western Australia where, in 1952, his Honours thesis made an early case that genocide had been committed in the administration of Aboriginal people in Western Australia. In the years that followed, Marchant became an early researcher of modern China and its relationship with the West, and won respect for his archival research of French maritime history in the Asia-Pacific. This work, including the publication of France Australe in 1982, was later recognised with the award of a French knighthood, the Chevalier d’Ordre National du Mèrite, and his election as a fellow to the Royal Geographical Society. In this festschrift, scholars from The University of Notre Dame Australia appraise Marchant’s work in such areas as Aboriginal history and policy, Westminster traditions, political philosophy, Australia and China and French maritime history.

Abstract:
Since the end of 2021, the food crisis in Syria has worsened. Humanitarian agencies working in Syria, as well as other experts, have warned the food crisis could rapidly lead to famine unless immediately addressed. This brief describes the social and political dimensions of food insecurity in Syria. It provides insights into how territorial fragmentation affects wheat-to-bread systems, outlines key threats to wheat production, and sets out key considerations for the humanitarian sector, researchers, and donors responding to the crisis. Sources for this brief include published papers, reports, media articles, and open-source datasets. It also draws on consultations with farmers and other experts that were conducted in November and December 2021. Consultations were held across the three main areas of control in Syria: North East Syria, North West Syria, and territories controlled by the government of Syria. This briefing was written by Fadi Adleh (independent researcher) and Diane Duclos (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) for the Social Science in Humanitarian Action Platform (SSHAP). It was reviewed externally by Edward Thomas (Rift Valley Institute) and support for field assessments was provided by Ali Ahmad (agronomist). The briefing was edited by Victoria Haldane and Leslie Jones (Anthrologica) and internally reviewed by Santiago Ripoll, Melissa Parker, and Annie Wilkinson. The brief is the responsibility of SSHAP.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant disruptions to education systems around the world. Many governments responded abruptly, quickly closing schools and transitioning to home learning. This paper explores the impact of extended school closures due to COVID-19 on teaching and student learning in three countries – Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos), Timor-Leste and Vanuatu. This research extends the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)’s multi-year Teacher Development Studies, which are commissioned under the Evaluation Analytics Service (EAS). This study series involves the investigation of DFAT-funded teacher development initiatives in Laos, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu to understand the extent to which the investments have improved teaching quality and student learning. In 2021, regular data collection for the study was extended to include COVID-19 impact questions, thereby providing an opportunity to understand a wide range of education stakeholder perspectives on their experience of transitioning and implementing home learning, the impact on teaching practices and student learning, and the level of support teachers were provided during the pandemic.

Abstract:
Student learning outcomes are an important source of evidence regarding improved teaching quality. A multi-year teacher development study series was commissioned by the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to investigate teacher development initiatives in Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos), Timor-Leste and Vanuatu. The overall aim of the study series is to understand the extent to which the Australian investment has improved teaching quality and student learning. This paper outlines the different approaches to sourcing and using data in each country context, and then presents initial insights about the challenges associated with the limited availability of data for measuring and reporting student learning outcomes, as a measure of teacher effectiveness. It presents key lessons learned about conducting research with limited existing student learning outcomes data and offers some solutions to inform programs in other contexts.
