Abstract:
This chapter examines the work of a younger generation of Liberal men of letters published between 1860 and 1880. These collected reviews, periodical articles, and monographs demonstrate a renewed interest in Burke, the eighteenth century, and the history of thought more generally. Examination of the work of ‘advanced’ Liberals such as John Morley, Leslie Stephen, and James Fitzjames Stephen reveals that the ‘liberal utilitarian’ label is simplistic and misleading when applied to their characterization of Burke’s thought. It shows instead how these writers and their texts made a rather different contribution, one which is frequently overlooked: Morley and the Stephens were forced to conclude that Burke was an insufficient guide for modern Liberals. Both Leslie Stephen and Morley were also instrumental in linking Burke’s thought to increasingly popular notions of organic development.

Abstract:
American Literature and the Long Downturn argues that the economic crisis of the 1970s established the conditions for a contemporary literary form: neoliberal apocalypse. Apocalyptic writing appears when groups perceive themselves as threatened and hope seems foreclosed. Focusing on James Baldwin, Cormac McCarthy, Leslie Marmon Silko, and David Foster Wallace, Neoliberal Apocalypse reveals how contemporary American experience has been shaped by the tendency to imagine our present as apocalyptic.

Abstract:
This article examines the issue of environmental justice and cosmovision in transnational American studies and indigenous literature. It contends that Leslie Marmon Silko’s Almanac of the Dead and Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/La Frontera had significant influence on the politicized multiculturalism in foundational American Studies texts and early ecocriticism. It also argues that these works served as the bases for the concepts of “traffic in toxins” and “slow violence” and that they also contributed in redefining the questions that shape Native American studies and its relation to American Studies.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter addresses questions of neoliberalism and gender surveillance in a post-9/11 era. Working through an account of the situation of trans people in the USA provided by Leslie Feinberg’s novel “Drag King Dreams”, the chapter discusses the boundaries of citizenship in a system that actively attempts to exclude, alienate, and violate certain identities, particularly transgender individuals and racialized or religious ‘others’. The chapter highlights aspects of non-conformity and the governmental practices that are triggered by deviances from mainstream norms. It critically engages the hardships for individuals that are produced from such governmental practices, most notably surveillance.

Abstract:
This chapter offers a new reading of Catullus’ Lesbia by examining the poet’s spatial poetics. These poetics play a crucial role in shaping the worlds created in the poems. Catullus’ collection features three distinct poetics of place: topical, neoteric, and abstracted, clustered in specific groups of poems: the polymetrics, the carmina maiora, and the elegiac epigrams, respectively. As Lesbia is the only character (apart from the ‘Catullus’ persona) who appears in each group, she presents the ideal subject for examining how Catullus’ distinct poetics of place shape characterization in different genres of poetry. Furthermore, as a woman whose gender is frequently thematized, Lesbia presents a fulcrum for investigating how gendered ideologies of certain spaces might have shaped Catullus’ spatial poetics. This chapter offers close readings of three ‘Lesbia’ poems: 37, 68b, and 70, to highlight the importance of place and space to Lesbia’s role in each poem.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the book The University of Oxford. A History (2016), by Laurence W. B. Brockliss. The book is divided into four parts: the ‘Catholic University’ (c.1100–1534), the ‘Anglican University’ (1534–1845), the ‘Imperial University’ (1845–1945), and the ‘World University’ (1945–2015). Brockliss’s account broadly endorses the idea that the 400 years or so between the high middle ages and the Victorian era of reform were a time of decline for Oxford, reaching the lowest point under the Hanoverians. Yet this interpretation has been seriously questioned by others, including Lucy Sutherland and Leslie Mitchell. The book tackles a range of topics related to Oxford, including its undergraduate curriculum, student population, research, funding, and institutional obstacles to reform.

Roy, Goode, Kronke Herbert, and McKendrick Ewan, eds. Part II A View Through Illustrative Contracts and Harmonizing Instruments, 12 Financial Leasing: The 1988 UNIDROIT Convention and the UNIDROIT Model Law. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198735441.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines two international instruments in the field of leasing: the 1988 UNIDROIT Convention on international financial leasing and the 2008 UNIDROIT Model Law on Leasing. The former is confined to financial leasing involving an international element while the latter covers all leases, international and domestic. A key problem with finance leasing is that while it is the intending lessee who chooses the supplier the remedies for non-delivery or for defective equipment are vested in the lessor under the sale contract, to which the lessee is not a party. The Convention addresses this problem by treating the lessee as a party to the supply contract. The Convention also secures the lessor's right to liquidated damages and safeguards the lessor against the lessee's insolvency. The Model Law tracks the provisions of the Convention as regards financial leases, and prescribes the principal rights and remedies of both parties.

Abstract:
In 1960, cinema critic Jonas Mekas welcomed the advent of the New American Cinema, praising the wave of independent movies produced in late 1950s for their casual and fragmentary nature. The key feature of these productions, which was particularly remarkable in the case of two major features—Shadowsby John Cassavetes andPull My Daisyby Alfred Leslie and Robert Frank—was an anti-Hollywood style that relied on improvisatory practices affecting all structural levels: from the acting to the montage, from the photography to the soundtrack. The style of this “spontaneous cinema” was a pastiche of multiple improvisatory practices, borrowed from bebop, beat poetry, and Stanislavsky’s acting techniques, which defied traditional cinematographic narratives. A close analysis ofShadowsandPull My Daisyreveals the multiple forms of improvisation that shaped these movies’ “spontaneous poetics” and the ways in which they both managed to bring improvisation into film art.

Schwindt-Bayer, Leslie A., and Santiago Alles. Women in Legislatures. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190851224.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
Leslie A. Schwindt-Bayer and Santiago Alles argue that the influx of women into Latin American legislatures has been substantial, but once in office, women have struggled to attain full access to political power. They present a statistical analysis that shows that the main explanations for variation in women’s representation lie with gender quotas and party system fragmentation. They show that women in national legislatures have brought women’s issues to the legislative arena, and they provide a new analysis showing that female legislators are more supportive of liberal gender equality, abortion, and divorce laws. However, they argue that women have not gained access to diverse committee leadership posts or served in top chamber leadership posts to the same extent as men. Finally, they show that the presence of women in legislatures has had important effects on citizen support for female political leaders, political engagement and participation, and supportiveness of representative democracy.

Abstract:
This chapter details the efforts to bring the film Victor/Victoria to Broadway. For thirteen years since Blake Edwards' successful experience with Julie Andrews on the film, he had been renewing the theatrical rights to the property, the story and characters, at considerable expense. His longtime producer and partner Tony Adams was urging him to do something with it or cut it loose. One idea was to take its song-and-dance aspects to Broadway. But first Edwards, Adams, and choreographer Rob Marshall would have to cobble together some kind of a show. Edwards started writing the musical's “book,” and of course Mancini and Leslie Bricusse would try to revisit the same story they had tackled in 1982 and come up with Broadway-styled songs. Victor/Victoria was supposed to go into previews in the spring of 1995 with a Broadway opening soon after. But so many things were out of shape; the real reason for the delays and for its ultimate weaknesses as a show was the sudden and quite unexpected health crisis of its composer.
