Abstract:

This dissertation is dedicated to an exploration of "Wood's Method" -- a novel approach to fitting demographic transition matrices to age and sex population count data. Demographic transition matrices, otherwise known as "Leslie matrices," are extensively used to forecast population by age, sex, and other characteristics. Our implementation of Wood's Method simplifies the creation of age and sex population forecasts greatly by reducing the amount of data necessary to create a demographic transition matrix. Furthermore, the method can be used to infer a demographic component of change (one of migration, fertility, or mortality) if the other two components are specified.

In Chapter One, we introduce Wood's Method, as well as showing some illustrative examples. In Chapter Two, we evaluate the accuracy of Wood's Method by crossvalidating age and sex specific forecasts for 3,120 US counties. In Chapter Three, we present a simpler, alternative derivation of Wood's Method with an extensive example and show some extensions to the method made possible by this new formulation. In Chapter Four, we use the method to examine migration rates at the US County level and show important results regarding clustering of migration. Each chapters is independent of the others, but should be read in order.

To our knowledge, this is the first time Wood's Method has been used for forecasting human populations. We hope to show its viability as a forecasting and analysis method and sketch directions for further research.

West, Thomas Andrew. ""A Genuinely Missionary Encounter"| The Proper Lens for Viewing Lesslie Newbigin's Theology." Thesis, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10277007.

Abstract:

This study argues that Lesslie Newbigin’s doctrine of Scripture is best seen when viewed through the lens of his theology of missionary encounter. For this point to be made, two important aspects of Newbigin’s thought must be systematized and related to each another. First, it will be shown that Newbigin has a theology of missionary encounter. Second, Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter will be shown to function as a lens to view his theology in general and his doctrine of Scripture in particular. Chapter 1 explains the research topic and the limits of the thesis. Chapter 2 shows the presence of Newbigin’s theological ambition that led to his theology of missionary encounter. Chapter 3 reveals the formative role that Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter had on his theological method and theological project as a whole. Chapter 4 builds upon the previous two chapters by using Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter as a lens to view his doctrine of Scripture. Chapter 5 considers what the nature of Newbigin’s theology reveals about Newbigin as a theologian.

Chapter 1, “Introducing The Research Topic,” introduces Lesslie Newbigin and the thesis of this research. The purpose of this chapter is to provide the reader with the research focus, understanding of key concepts, and the delimits of the issues involved. First, attention is given to understanding the place of this dissertation within the literature and the personal journey that led to the writing of this dissertation. This chapter will highlight the importance of the topic by explaining the ways it contributes to the field of Newbigin studies as well as the discipline of theology in general.

Chapter 2 is an overview of Newbigin’s life and work. This chapter demonstrates the presence of Newbigin’s theological ambition to engage in a missionary encounter that resulted in his theology of missionary encounter. By examining Newbigin’s missionary theology, this chapter outlines the development of Newbigin’s theological ambition throughout his life. It is shown that his ambition to engage in a missionary encounter reached maturity later in his life as he articulated his theology of missionary encounter. At its core, Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter is aimed at helping the Church recover the gospel, indwell the biblical story, and challenge the axioms of the culture with the axioms of the Bible in order to live as a faithful witness. The missionary encounter, this challenging of competing stories, takes place within the individual lives of members in a local congregation.

In order to show that Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter best mediates his doctrine of scripture, consideration must be given to understanding the form and function of his theology as a whole. Chapter 3, “Newbigin’s Theological Method,” explores the structure of Newbigin’s theology. After surveying the structure of Newbigin’s theological method as a whole, the focus of this chapter narrows on a series of unpublished articles which Newbigin thought of as a sort of Dogmatics of his thought. The contextual nature of Newbigin’s theology makes it clear that a robust understanding of what Newbigin believed about anything must be understood in relation to his desire to bring the gospel story to bear on the cultural story. The intended point is that Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter has a permeating presence throughout the form and function of his theology as a whole.

Chapter 4, “Systematizing Newbigin’s Doctrine of Scripture,” presents a systematization of Newbigin’s doctrine of Scripture with the help of his theology of missionary encounter. Building upon the previous two chapters, this chapter utilizes Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter as a lens through which his doctrine of Scripture can be understood. The clarity of Newbigin’s doctrine of Scripture emerges as his theology refracted through the lens of his theology of missionary encounter. Newbigin’s doctrine of Scripture is presented in one summary sentence followed by seven categorical statements which are intended to exegete the summary sentence. Observing Newbigin’s missionary encounter between gospel and culture provides the proper lens for seeing what Newbigin believed about Scripture.

Chapter 5, “Newbigin’s Public and Prophetic Theology,” raises the question about what the nature of Newbigin’s theology reveals about Newbigin as a theologian. This chapter provides a concluding summary of the research involved and clears some paths for future research. While demonstrating the usefulness of Newbigin as a dialogue partner this chapter provides some cautions for appropriating Newbigin’s thought uncritically. Combining these different levels of analysis highlights the central role of Newbigin’s theology of missionary encounter in his theology.

Barandiarán, Valenzuela Brisa, and Peves Lucero Elizabeth Enriquez.

Full text
Abstract:
In the history of trans subjectivities represented in literature, Stone Butch Blues (1993) by Leslie Feinberg was a milestone that has been translated into over ten languages. Nevertheless, it has yet to be published in Spanish, a clear example of the lack of visibility these subjectivities have in literature available in this language. In light of this situation, this study proposes a queer and collaborative translation of the novel to Spanish, where the queer aspect is positioned as a political act that seeks to question sex and gender representations and power structures in translation, while the collaborative aspect will be used as a means to accomplish these objectives through the inscription of the Peruvian LGBT+ community’s subjectivities in the target text. The translation will be analyzed as a process and a product. A pre-translation analysis, non-structured interviews and focus groups, with the assistance of the collaborators, will be used to determine to what extent the interrelation between a queer and collaborative approach in the translation will allow us to achieve the political purposes of the novel. The study will also be a response to the lack of academic publications on the joint use of these two approaches.

The objective of this study was to characterize the feeding system and to evaluate the nutritional status and financial efficiency of dairy cows belonging to dairy herds of the Maranhão east mesoregion, according to two periods of the year (water and dry) and two production strata L / day and Greater, ≥150 L / day). They were selected 19 Units with Milk Production (UPL) that received a visit during the period of the waters and a visit during the dry period. Data were collected by conference and samples of the ingredients supplied (quantities and prices), milk (total production, price, and milk samples). It was possible to identify that the UPL presented pasture feeding and concentrated food use in both periods of the year. There were no differences between water and dry matter for the daily availability of DM per animal (P = 0.85), total forage DM intake per day (P = 0.66) and neither with respect to live weight (P = 0, (P = 0.90) and CP consumption (P = 0.16), which allowed the absence of a difference in NDF consumption from forage (P = 0.90). Between the periods there was a difference between the price of milk traded between the UPLs, leaving the dry period with the highest value (P <0.05). The item revenue less cost with feed (RMCA) per liter of milk produced, presented better result during the dry period when compared to that obtained during the period of the waters. Feeding of the herds belonging to the UPL of the eastern Maranhão mesoregion is predominantly pasture, with food supplementation concentrated throughout the year and higher in the dry season. The higher supply of nitrogenous concentrated ingredients in the waters increased the NUL concentrations and reduced the lactose concentration. The price of milk undergoes oscillation within the year, being higher during the dry period, a fact that influenced the increase of gross income and the RMCA in this period. However, the financial assessment, considering the original production costs and the standardization of a single milk price, eliminated differences in RMCA between the periods.

Abstract:
I investigate the function of dress as it relates to cultural retention in Paule Marshall's Praisesong for the Widow and Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony, drawing upon the work of fashion theorists Joanne Entwistle, Alison Lurie and Anne Hollander. My examination of the two novels is informed by several excellent scholarly works which hold that characters' well being is determined by the extent to which they connect with their folkloric roots, the central message in both Ceremony and Praisesong for the Widow. I build on this discourse by demonstrating that the novels' consistent attention to clothing is a device that situates characters psychologically in their spiritual journeys homeward, from fragmented self identity to incorporeal contentment. My investigation of the unique treatment of clothing and adornment as metaphor for the novels' crises finds that the images of dress in characters' internal and external worlds heightens the conflict and illustrates the resolution in both novels.

The regular physical activity and healthy food choices are important lifestyle for the promotion of people s health, prevention and control of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In Brazil, these disorders affect specifically the adult and elderly population, but have their origins in childhood; its prevalence is common among children and adolescents who are frequently exposed to behavioral risk factors, such as physical inactivity and poor diet. This represents a big problem, because these factors are associated with most of NCDs such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes mellitus and chronic respiratory diseases. In this context the school is identified as adequate space for health promotion actions. In the eastern of Goiania, GO city, is developed, since 2007, the Healthy Living Project (HMP), prepared by the Eastern Health District of the Municipal Health Secretariat, approved and financed by the Ministry of Health. Their aim is to encourage, in communities school, practices that facilitate a healthy life, with emphasis on regular physical activity and healthy food choices. One problem identified is that the PSV was quantitatively assessed only once, when acted only in a school. Expanded its operations to 11 educational units, but had no other quantitative assessments. The aim of this study was to compare the frequency of physical activity and food choices of adolescents from Healthy Living Project (Intervention Group - IG), with habits of nonparticipants (control group - CG). It is a cross-sectional study in public schools in the Eastern Health District, Goiania, GO (8 schools in the GI and 2 in the GC). Sample of 911 adolescents aged 13 to 18 years. Comparative analysis was made using the Chi-square test. Results on physical activity found that most teenagers were inactive or insufficiently active (less than 300 min / week) in the proportion of 65.72% and 65.22% respectively in the Intervention and Control groups, no significant differences and higher prevalence in girls. About food choices, it was found that a little more than half, consuming health protective foods (beans, milk, fruits and vegetables) in 5 or more days a week, with 56.64% of GI and 50, 38% of CG (p = 0.373). So there were no differences between the schools of the GI and CG with regard to food choices and the frequency of physical activity. It is concluded that the PVS must be reassessed for a change of strategy, aimed at promoting positive health behaviors, which ultimately will contribute to the prevention of NCD, among them cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract:
The discourse and the practice evolve to the extent that the identification of new solutions is required. In recent years it has become clear that the promotion of a sustainable development not only depends on the amount of Aid, but as essentially on its quality. Therefore, within the international agreements it is stressed the idea that Aid for Development has to be more effective and the donors actions more harmonized and aligned to the partner countries strategies. The aim of the present dissertation is thus to disclose the Portuguese Cooperation for Development latest concept, the cooperation for development cluster, and the potential of a cooperation organized in clusters. The Cluster, a set of actions undertaken by several actors, in partnership, in the same geographical area and integrated in a common framework, arises as the Portuguese Cooperation operational answer to the need of a more effective aid. Is is presented, therefore, the latest Portuguese Cooperations tool for development cooperation: the Cluster, its theoretical evolution and practical operacionalization in the case study of East Timor. Altough this is a recent instrument it demonstrates, from the outset, some practical results and the ability to progressively deepen the integration of more actions and partners under a common framework. For a more effective cooperation.

International peace and state-building interventions in conflict-affected states have been on the rise for decades. This research identifies and examines the mechanisms used by the international community in Timor-Leste and assesses the implications of their use for a nationally negotiated political settlement. This research considers the following mechanisms: the establishment of a UN transitional authority, use of aid conditionality and provision of technical assistance, and suggests that the interplay between highly complex intra-East Timorese relationships and expectations with very prescriptive and pervasive international interventions contributed to a deformed and dysfunctional political settlement. Three interrelated sub-themes are explored in support of this hypothesis: international development partners interrupted and appropriated the political settlement negotiation process; international development partners failed to analyse Timor-Leste's context-specific political economy and conflict dynamics; and 'technocratic' policy advice was used to erode the state's ability to act as an agent of development. The mechanisms used by the international community produced outcomes that distanced the population from the state and rapidly altered the structure of the economy without a transition strategy. The international community must therefore assume some responsibility for the resultant political crisis and violence in 2006. Within the context of increasing international focus on conflict-affected states, evidence from Timor-Leste provides a unique lens that demonstrated how donors can negatively impact the trajectory of political settlements by using inappropriate mechanisms. This research comprises an innovative effort to bring together wide-ranging East Timorese perspectives and diverse literatures to construct a nuanced explanation of how international actions influence key dynamics of power. Drawing on the author's extensive experience living and working in Timor-Leste, it bridges existing gaps between disciplines and seeks to provide an explanatory construct that can be of use to policy-makers and practitioners in other conflict-affected states.

Abstract:

This thesis compares the regenerative processes at the heart of two milestone novels of contemporary Native American literature, Leslie Marmon Silko’s Ceremony and Thomas King’s Green Grass, Running Water. My comparative study will be divided into three main sections: the role of nature as a cultural referent in the main characters’ regenerative processes in each novel, the evolution of the identity quest in a post-contact environment, and finally, the repercussions of the protagonists’ re-actualization of identity on the rest of their community. Through the comparative study of the processes employed by Silko and King with respect to one’s relationship to nature, cultural identity and social relations, I will be able to identify several similarities shared by the two novels, which demonstrate that they belong to the same Native artistic continuum. These resemblances include the central role of nature in reconnecting the protagonists to their identity, as well as a predominant emphasis on the emergence of a hybridized identity in a post-contact environment. Moreover, the comparison of two novels emerging from two different eras of Native American Literature –that of the 1970s and of the 1990s- will allow me to isolate the influence of the cultural context to which each particular work belongs. In doing so, it becomes possible to determine the influence of some transformations in Native lifestyle on the fiction produced at a given time. More specifically, the modifications I chose to focus on include the rise of Euro-American environmentalism on the symbolic value of returning to nature for Natives as well as the increasing presence of middle-class, educated Natives and their representation, mostly present in King’s fiction.

Abstract:
Classroom management, as part-discipline of Educational Management, is a function of the teacher in his role of teacher-manager, consisting of the specific regulative tasks or actions performed by the teacher to facilitate the achievement of effective education within the classroom. The four major classroom managerial tasks for the teacher are the planning, organizing, leading and controlling actions, each consisting of numerous sub-tasks, which, although researched as separate phenomena, are interwoven and interrelated throughout all the managerial activity. The task of planning, which includes the interdependent sub-tasks of goal defining, policy making, decision making and problem solving, consists of the purposeful contemplation by the teacher regarding the future goals of the classroom, the resources and activities involved, and the problems which may occur in the compilation of the most suitable plan for the achievement of effective education. Organizing, as the second major managerial function of the teacher, is facilitated by planning, and consists of the creation of a structure defining the tasks, authority and position of each member of the classroom organization, delegating according to the structure, and co-ordinating all facets of the organization to function as an integrated whole towards the achievement of the goal of effective education. The Home Economics teacher responsible for the presentation of a multi-faceted subject within a complex classroom situation should exercise her managerial functions of planning and organizing to facilitate the effective education of the adolescent secondary school girl in preparation for her future role in her family life within society. The Home Economics teacher should receive comprehensive training in classroom management, consisting of scientifically structured knowledge which will enable her to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning in her classroom, and also prepare her for possible future promotion positions within the education system which require certain managerial competencies. The managerial tasks of planning and organizing are important functions in the modern classroom where the teacher is being held increasingly accountable for the effectiveness of the education which takes place in the classroom.

Abstract:
This research is aimed at discussing the impact of participatory communication on empowering, increasing agency, and mobilizing citizenship that fosters social change. I conducted my fieldwork with a group of 21 youth (seven women and 14 men), with ages ranging from 15 to 30 years, who reside in Ataúro, Timor-Leste. This group participates in a community wall-newspaper founded in 2008. The methodologies applied were participant observation and qualitative interviews. The text is divided into three chapters; the first explores the societal structure and the constructing of youth, and the process of resignification of youth roles and identities from the work of young people in the community newspaper. In the following chapter, the internal dynamic of the newspaper group is analysed through the participatory communication framework, elaborating on empowerment processes and showing how this promotes changes and continuities in traditional structures. Finally, the last chapter looks at interactions of the group with their community and the way the negotiation between new and traditional practices develops. Youth are more empowered and the changes occurring throughout the participatory process suggest that ruptures and continuities between conserving and changing traditional practices, and the perception of ‘youth’ in the community, are occurring.

Abstract:
The suitability of sunflower (Heliantus annuus L.) as a host of Ophraella communa Le Sage (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) was evaluated under greenhouse and field conditions. Population dynamics of O. communa on sunflower and on ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) were determined using a life table approach. Sixty percent of O. communa females died during the first 30 days on sunflower while only 14% died on ragweed plants. Only 20% of fertile females laid eggs on sunflower plants as compared with 100% on ragweed plants. Fecundity, life duration, egg viability, and other biological parameters were significantly higher on ragweed plants than on sunflower plants. Ragweed is the main host plant for O. communa. Nevertheless, in specific situations (no-choice) adults and larvae of O. communa can damage sunflower plants. However, O. communa cannot complete its life cycle or increase its population on sunflower plants.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Antillean manatee, Trichechus manatus manatus, is a mammal with an herbivorous diet and costal distribution in rivers, estuaries and inshore waters of the Brazilian Tropical Zone. In Cearà State, the species may found in the outermost ends of its western and eastern sectors. In the eastern sector there are no Marine Conservation Units to ward off impacts to the environment and the manatee population, such as urban development, tourism and occupation of beaches and mangrove forests. Manatees have been classified by the International Union for Nature Conservation as a âvulnerable speciesâ and included on the Official List of Endangered Species of the Brazilian Fauna. According to the Brazilian Institute for the Environment, it runs an extremely high risk of extinction in the near future. The objectives of this Thesis have been to determine the spatial distribution and patterns of usage of the living area, choice of the most appropriate methodology for population monitoring and mapping of feeding grounds and freshwater sources likely to used by the animals. The database was obtained by means of aerial surveys from June, 2003 to October, 2004, making up a 24-hour monitoring effort during 11 overhead flights, as well as nautical surveys performed from August, 2003 to November, 2004, making up a 157-hour monitoring effort during 10 voyages. Of the two prospecting techniques, the aerial one was less practical because of water turbidity, which made it difficult to identify and count manatee specimens, whereas the nautical one, because of its nearness to the targets, proved to the most efficient. The status of the Antillean manatee population was evaluated through the following parameters: (a) habitat conservation, with emphasis on territory maintenance; (b) access to freshwater sources and areas suitable for feeding and reproduction; (c) yielding of optimum environmental conditions for parental care. The threatened extinction in the studied area is related to factors such as decreasing of food and freshwater sources, silting-up of the Jaguaribe River, by-catch by trawl and gillnet fishing. The worrying outcome of such a scenario is likely to result in a reduction of the habitat size; increase in the straying of newborns plus an increase in adult mortality rates. The Picos region, specially the Cajuais sandbank, was defined as a High Density Zone, which displays a highly aggregate distribution because of seaweed abundance and smaller deployment of fishing boats. Among the suggestions for lowering the extinction risks of the Antillean manatee in Eastern Cearà State, the following ones stand out; (a) development of education campaigns which deal with the main aspects of environment preservation; (b) reintroduction of specimens in zones where population decline is evident; (c) installation of Marine Conservation Units and enforcement of the pertinent management measures and (d) constant monitoring of the population in the known habitat to determine environmental patterns which influence manatees in Icapuà county, eastern Cearà State.

De, Anna Francesco. "On the dynamics of some complex fluids." Thesis, Bordeaux, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016BORD0051/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis is devoted to the dynamics of specific complex fluids. On the one hand we studythe dynamics of the so-called nematic liquid crystals, through the models proposed by Ericksen and Leslie, Beris and Edwards, Qian and Sheng. On the other hand we analyze the dynamics of a temperature-dependent complex fluid, whose dynamics is governed by the Boussinesq system.Nematic liquid crystals are materials exhibiting a state of matter between an ordinary fluid and a solid. In this thesis we are interested in studying the Cauchy problem associated to eachsystem modelling their hydrodynamics. At first, we establish some well-posedness results, such asexistence and uniqueness of global-in-time weak or classical solutions. Moreover we also analyzesome dynamical behaviours of these solutions, such as propagations of both higher and lowerregularities. The general framework for the initial data is that of Besov spaces, which extend the most widelyknown classes of Sobolev and Hölder spaces. The Ericksen-Leslie system is studied in a simplified form proposed by F. Lin and C. Liu,which retains the main difficulties of the original one. We consider both a two-dimensional and athree-dimensional space-domain. We assume the density to be no constant, i.e. the inhomogeneouscase, moreover we allow it to present discontinuities along an interface so that we can describe amixture of liquid crystal materials with different densities. We prove the existence of global-in-timeweak solutions under smallness conditions on the initial data in critical homogeneous Besov spaces. These solutions are invariant under the scaling behaviour of the system. We also show that theuniqueness holds under a tiny extra-regularity for the initial data. The Beris-Edwards system is analyzed in a two-dimensional space-domain. We achieve existenceand uniqueness of global-in-time weak solutions when the initial data belongs to specific Sobolevspaces (without any smallness condition). The regularity of these functional spaces is suitable inorder to well define a weak solution. We achieve the uniqueness result through a specific analysis, controlling the norm of the difference between to weak solutions and performing a delicate doublelogarithmicestimate. Then, the uniqueness holds thanks to the Osgood lemma. We also achieve aresult about regularity propagation. The Qian-Sheng model is analyzed in a space-domain with dimension greater or equal than two.In this case, we emphasize some important characteristics of the system, especially the presence ofan inertial term, which generates significant difficulties. We perform the existence of a Lyapunovfunctional and the existence and uniqueness of classical solutions under a smallness condition forthe initial data. Finally we deal with the well-posedness of the Boussinesq system. We prove the existence ofglobal-in-time weak solutions when the space-domain has a dimension greater or equal than two.We deal with the case of a viscosity dependent on the temperature. The initial temperature is justsupposed to be bounded, while the initial velocity belongs to some critical Besov Space. The initialdata have a large vertical component while the horizontal components fulfil a specific smallnessconditions: they are exponentially smaller than the vertical component

The research analyzes the historical conditions that enabled the creation of the Movement from the Federal University in the East Zone and their participation in the implementation of the Expansion Programs I and the Support to the Restructuring and Expansion of Federal Universities (REUNI) from the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP). The research was based on interviews with representatives of the Movement, speeches made at the opening of the Seminar on the UNIFESP Education Programme in the East in the University and documentation relating to UNIFESP and the Movement. As a result, we have the joints by the public university from the 80s in the region, the creation of the East Zone Education Forum in 1993, winning the deployment of FATEC-ZL in 2002 and the East Campus of the University of São Paulo (USP Leste) in 2005. However, the population hadn¿t met their expectations and remained the demand for public higher education in the region. The institution of the expansion of federal universities programs from 2003 enabled the use of these desires by creating the Movement for Federal University in the East in 2009. After negotiations with the Ministry of Education and the Municipality of São Paulo, construction of the campus is inserted in implementing REUNI Program and begins the challenges of UNIFESP. We can conclude that the creation and participation of the Movement came from the process of social construction, economic and East Zone area of politics, and the importance that social movements have taken in bringing the university with society and groups less favored above all the contradictions and tensions present in this relationship.

Abstract:
This thesis is an examination of the development of ethnic, cultural and national identity among the East Timor people reaching Australia after the East Timor civil war of August 1975 . In the introduction I argue that ethnic and national identity, or ethno-nationalism, is not a natural phenomenon and that it can emerge at any moment in time owing to specific historical, socio-economic or political circumstances. I argue that during the 1974-1975 period the Portuguese- Timorese mestieo (racially mixed) elite of East Timer, principally those of Dili, of which the refugees are representative, began developing specific ethnic and nationalist ideologies in response to new political circumstances offering the people the opportunity to assert an all-embracing East Timorese identity. The chapters which follow present data and analysis in support of the initial argument and are directed to show that a combination of theoretical approaches offer a better rationale for the understanding of identity creation and development. In Chapters 2 and 3 I describe the refugees' historical, socio-economic and political background and assert that history is important for an understanding of the selective representation of myths, symbols, ideologies and instrumental tactics. In Chapters 4, 5 and 6 I examine the development of III identity against the interplay of social order, power and conflict. I direct the analysis towards the notion of negotiation of an identity within global and local political and social parameters. I examine political issues, contextual problems, personal and group motives and the re-creation and presentation of symbols, myths, ideas and beliefs. Chapter 7 shows how the search for the legitimization of an identity and political claims by nationalist individuals and the group are directed by the intelligentsia 1 s manipulation through the artistic media of specific nationalist ideologies aimed at resolving the problems of the present. In Chapter 8 I discuss the role of the Catholic Church in the politics of identity building, its position in relation to the people's demands of historical and cultural obligations, the dilemmas experienced by the Church in the face of its own tenets and the institutionalized order, and the people's teleological use of religion as techniques of political resistance. I conclude by reasserting that refugee populations such as the East Timorese in having to re-stablish their lives in an alien context would normally strive to function socially according to their perceptions of priority needs, creating in the process new subjective understandings. I stress that this also demonstrates that it is paramount to direct the analysis of ethno-nationalism through a combination of diverse theoretical approaches and that in this form one can better understand the whole set of the people's strategies for identity survival.

This study aims to contribute to the reflection on strategic management in public organizations and its possible implementation by government agencies, taking as a model of application the Reference Center for the Elderly "Antonio Ermirio de Moraes , in São Paulo City s east area, an institution associated with the São Paulo State Department of Health. To address the topic of this study, Strategic Management in Public Management a necessity for comprehensive care of elderly persons in the 21st century, we wrote this essay in three chapters as follows: In Chapter I, we provide the conceptual foundation originated from Business Administration to introduce Strategic Planning in Management as part of administrative management activities at all levels of the organization and the sphere of government to which it belongs. In Chapter II, we describe the activities undertaken by the chosen institution the Reference Center for the Elderly "Antonio Ermírio de Moraes via a case study to provide a historical evidence of its existence from its inception in 1999 until its extinction in 2009. In Chapter III, we present an analysis of strategic thinking turned into planning and its praxis, commenting on the problems encountered by policy makers to create a culture for permanent strategic management and achieve their goals. The importance of this study goes beyond the bounds of law, government policies and the conceptual foundation of strategic thinking in public administration and its awareness as it tells the story of an idea and its transformation into reality, which led to the creation of the first Reference Center for the Elderly in Brazil, which might otherwise be forever cast into oblivion

The work aims to analyze the new leasing standard which is supposed to be adopted by IFRS as well as US GAAP. The new standard represents one of the steps in the process of harmonization and convergence between two predominant world accounting standards, which has been in progress since the year 2002. The work provides readers with the comparison of these two leasing standards, resulted from which the need of common lease standard arose. This led to the first exposure draft of convergence standard issue, and finally the re-exposure draft issue. Because the new accounting standard is still in progress, I provide the analysis of the process as at the end of August.

Abstract:
Teaching mathematics means teaching learners to think – wrote Polya in How to Solve It? 1957. This paper intends to offer mathematics teachers suggestions for incorporating reading, writing, and speaking practices in the teaching of mathematics. Through explicit examples and explanations we intend to share ways of engaging students in deep learning of mathematics, especially using and producing written and oral texts. More specifically, we plan to broaden and deepen teachers’ understanding of strategies for guiding students’ thinking so that they grasp mathematical concepts and processes, and also bridge the divide between mathematical processes, and written and oral communication. This paper presents a core math lessons which provides numerous opportunities for the students to get actively engaged in the lesson and think about the new concepts, algorithms and ways of solving problems/ exercises. The lesson was designed for the 7th graders (13 year-olds). It was chosen to illustrate teaching by using reading and writing for understanding math processes. The teacher’s reflections after the lesson and some samples of the students’ work and feedback are included in the paper. The material in this paper is based on the author’s own extensive teaching experience; and her work in the Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking project in Romania.

Abstract:
This is an analysis of the U.S. Army's personnel decisions in the Second World War. Specifically, it considers the U.S. Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall's appointment of generals to combat command, and his reasons for relieving some generals while leaving others in place after underperformance. Many historians and contemporaries of Marshall, including General Omar N. Bradley, have commented on Marshall's ability to select brilliant, capable general officers for combat command in the war. However, in addition to solid performers like J. Lawton Collins, Lucian Truscott, and George S. Patton, Marshall, together with Dwight D. Eisenhower and Lesley J. McNair, often selected sub-par commanders who significantly underperformed on the battlefield. These generals' tactical and operational decisions frequently led to unnecessary casualties, and ultimately prolonged the war. The work considers six case studies: Lloyd Fredendall at Kasserine Pass, Mark Clark during the Italian campaign, John Lucas at Anzio, Omar Bradley at the Falaise Gap, Courtney Hodges at the Hürtgen Forest, and Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr. at Okinawa. Personal connections and patronage played strong roles in these generals' command appointments, and often trumped practical considerations like command experience. While their superiors ultimately relieved corps commanders Fredendall and Lucas, field army and army group commanders Clark, Hodges, and Bradley retained command of their units, (Buckner died from combat wounds on Okinawa). Personal connections also strongly influenced the decision to retain the field army and army group commanders in their commands.

Abstract:
The Leslie Street Spit is a five kilometre rubble breakwater on the eastern waterfront of Toronto. Built during the mid-twentieth-century as an infrastructural add-on to the existing Port Lands Industrial District, the artificial peninsula was a lakefilling project made to realize the city???s ambitious desire for economic prosperity and world-class prestige by expanding its existing harbour facilities. With the decline of Toronto???s shipping industry, the Leslie Spit remained an active dump site for urban clean fill until it was unexpectedly colonized by flora and fauna during the 1970s. The site is now recognized as an important local and international environmental resource. Visitors to the Leslie Spit experience a diverse landscape of ecosystems and industrial rubble helded by the city as a symbol of environmental revival within a former industrial region undergoing another phase of urbanization. While the local aesthetic experience of the headland is pleasurable and aligns with the reinvention of Toronto as am environmentally conscious and sustainable city, human visitors remain psychologically and physically removed from the inhabiting non-human life. Occasionally, the desire to conserve and preserve the natural world requires a separation between humans and non-humans. This relationship is carried out in varying degrees on the Leslie Spit. This thesis documents events at the headland where the human/non-human divide is rigidly enforced or left ambiguous. The purpose of the thesis is not to treat the headland as an eccentric spectacle, but to investigate the unexpected coexistence between humans and non-humans.

This thesis aims to explore the web of identity in Leslie Silko’s Ceremony, and to apply these identity issues to English teaching. Five chapters constitute this thesis. The first chapter discusses hybridity in Ceremony. The two most obvious aspects of hybridity manifest in Ceremony are textual hybridity and ethnic hybridity. Silko’s hybrid writing strategies create ‘third Spaces,’ to use Homi Bhabha’s term, and migrations from ‘third spaces’ to further ‘third spaces’. Using Bhabha’s understanding of hybridity, I argue that Silko’s writing strategies parallel her concept of identity. Silko purposely chooses a hybrid Indian instead of a full-blood Indian as her protagonist in order to show that mixed-blood Indians are authentic Indians too. The second chapter analyzes the influences of Euro-American narrative discourses on American Indians in Ceremony. Two kinds of readers are presented in this chapter─naive readers and radical readers. The difference between these two kinds of readers is that naive readers read authentic narrative discourses blindly, while radical readers do not. Chapter Three emphasizes the significance of oral tradition, especially for storytelling. Storytelling is not only an entertainment but also something powerful which can defend against ‘the witchery of evil’ coming from the white hegemony. By situating himself in the Indian mythic world, Tayo finds his position in Indian myth and confirms his ethnic identity as an Indian. Chapter Four focuses on the application of Ceremony to the EFL senior high school classroom in Taiwan. Chapter Five presents and discusses the results of the teaching application.

Lesin, Alexander Abraham. "On the Mumford-Tate Conjecture for Abelian Varieties with Reduction Conditions." Thesis, 1994. https://thesis.library.caltech.edu/7683/1/Lesin%201994.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:

In this thesis we study Galois representations corresponding to abelian varieties with certain reduction conditions. We show that these conditions force the image of the representations to be "big," so that the Mumford-Tate conjecture (:= MT) holds. We also prove that the set of abelian varieties satisfying these conditions is dense in a corresponding moduli space.

The main results of the thesis are the following two theorems.

Theorem A: Let A be an absolutely simple abelian variety, End° (A) = k : imaginary quadratic field, g = dim(A). Assume either dim(A) ≤ 4, or A has bad reduction at some prime ϕ, with the dimension of the toric part of the reduction equal to 2r, and gcd(r,g) = 1, and (r,g) ≠ (15,56) or (m -1, m(m+1)/2). Then MT holds.

Theorem B: Let M be the moduli space of abelian varieties with fixed polarization, level structure and a k-action. It is defined over a number field F. The subset of M(Q) corresponding to absolutely simple abelian varieties with a prescribed stable reduction at a large enough prime ϕ of F is dense in M(C) in the complex topology. In particular, the set of simple abelian varieties having bad reductions with fixed dimension of the toric parts is dense.

Besides this we also established the following results:

(1) MT holds for some other classes of abelian varieties with similar reduction conditions. For example, if A is an abelian variety with End° (A) = Q and the dimension of the toric part of its reduction is prime to dim( A), then MT holds.

(2) MT holds for Ribet-type abelian varieties.

(3) The Hodge and the Tate conjectures are equivalent for abelian 4-folds.

(4) MT holds for abelian 4-folds of type II, III, IV (Theorem 5.0(2)) and some 4-folds of type I.

(5) For some abelian varieties either MT or the Hodge conjecture holds.

Abstract In this thesis, we concerned about the dynamical behavior of the Leslie-Gower predator-prey system with time delay with different functional response, p(x). At first, we discuss the global stability for the Leslie-Gower predator-prey system wi -th time delay when p(x)=cx in the Holling type I model.Seco- ndly, we change of the p(x)=cx/(1+x) in the Holling type II model.Thirdly, with p(x)=cx^2/(1+x^2) in the Holling type III model. Finally, we illustrate our results by some examples.
