Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

"The exterior-letter advantage in linear multi-letter arrays." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/14596.

Full text
Abstract:
When linear arrays of unrelated letters (e.g., 'sfdthnc') are presented tachistoscopically centred across a fixation point, letters presented at exterior positions (e.g., 's----c') aregenerally reported more accurately than letters presented in interior positions. This "exterior-letter advantage" suggests that processing is more efficient for exterior letters than for interior letters. Previous researchers have argued that the exterior-letter advantage can be fully accounted for by the influences of lateral interference and mask configuration. However, the processes responsible for the exterior-letter advantage are far from resolved, despite the robustness of the phenomenon and its occurrence in numerous investigations into visual information processing. The experiments reported in this study investigated the role of lateral interference and backward pattern masking in the exterior-letter advantage. To investigate the role of lateral interference, performance was compared across complete 7-letter arrays and arrays in which the presence and proximity of flanking letters was varied by (i) presenting only exterior letters and their immediately flanking interior letter, (ii) varying the number blank letter-spaces by which these letter-pairs were separated, (iii) varying the nature of the characters presented in these displays, and (iv) presenting each exterior/interior letter-pair in isolation. The role of backward pattern masking was investigated (i) using different mask configurations which either matched or exceeded the left and right boundaries of complete letter arrays, and (ii) using masks which overlay only the positions of each exterior/interior letter-pair. The findings indicate that while lateral interference and mask configuration each played a part, neither an imbalance in the number of immediately flanking letters for interior and exterior letters nor mask configuration can entirely account for the exterior-letter advantage.

Abstract:

Journey with the myth of Lethe, spring of oblivion and mother of anxiety, into the land of radical forgiveness and forgetfulness, healing the soul of the world. Forgetfulness is defined as proactive and positive, not reductionist or regressive. The research includes a comprehensive research survey of over 300 papers and 100 works of literature related to concepts of forgiveness and forgetfulness. Qualitative, alchemical hermeneutics, intuitive inquiry, and shamanic participatory epistemology methodologies are applied to investigating how life might be improved by a deeper level of healing of the soul provided by forgiveness and forgetfulness. The findings indicate that forgiveness and forgetfulness heal the individual, collective, and the planet as a whole. Recommendations are made for further psychological research, clinical implementation, and inclusion of forgiveness and forgetfulness in the areas of general psychotherapeutic theory and practice; wisdom psychology; posttraumatic embitterment disorder (PTED); and transgenerational transmission of trauma, suicide, and trauma.

Abstract:
The subject of the diploma thesis is the design and the assessment of two variants of existing HVAC system, that serves the microelectronic laboratory premises of GL Electronic company, which are situated in JIC INMEC center. The aim of the designing process is to find the optimal solution of the problem, which is concerned of excessive air humidity gains in the clean rooms. The first proposed approach is the installation of controlled dehumidification in the form of direct cooling into the yet existing device. The second considered approach is a complete deconstruction of implemented air conditioning unit and subsequent reinstalling of the brand new unit, which would meet all the requirements. Both two variants will be in the beginning outlined in a form of pre-study, selected option will be later on processed as project documentation for construction. The winning solution will be designed in the way that will satisfie the criteria of hygiene, function, and economy. The next section of the text will be dedicated to the research regarding the topic of the physical nature of air humidity, of the transportation of humidity, dehumidification of the space, also. Last but not least, the heat recovery efficiency will be measured (in the form of thermal glycol tubes). The experiment provides evidence of the system's real-time performance.

Abstract:
The recent publication of the bulk of Hawthorne's letters has precipitated this study, which deals with Hawthorne's creative and subversive narration and his synchronic appeal to a variety of readers possessing different tastes. The author initially investigates Hawthorne's religion and demonstrate how he disguised his personal religious convictions, ambiguously using the intellectual categories of Calvinism, Unitarianism, and spiritualism to promote his own humanistic "religion." Hawthorne's appropriation of the jeremiad further illustrates his emphasis on religion and narration. Although his religion remained humanistic, he readily used the old Puritan political sermon to describe and defend his own financial hardships. That jeremiad outlook has significant implications for his art.

Full text
Abstract:
Amphibian populations are in mass decline on a global scale. Various explanations have been considered, including harmful effects from exposure to toxicants. Using Xenopus laevis adults and tadpoles, potential sublethal effects of atrazine, a herbicide, were investigated in this thesis. I also investigated the toxicity of an organic herbicide compared this with the toxicity of a synthetic herbicide, using LC50 values. Whether X. laevis adult frogs could communicate chemically was tested experimentally. The results suggest that adult female X. laevis communicate chemically, but there was no evidence that male individuals did so. For testing tadpoles I used a kin-preference assay. An encouraging trend for kin preference was evident, for both an outbred and an inbred line. Tadpoles changed their behaviour after exposure to l0μg/L of atrazine for 24 hr. Kin preferences in the control tests were reversed after exposure. A hypothesis of altruistic kin avoidance was suggested by these results. However, when individuals were isolated and then exposed, these individuals had more pronounced preference for kin compared to controls. X. laevis tadpoles exposed to Organic Interceptor (organic herbicide) had a LC50 that was more than 7000 times lower than the 20% recommended dose, whereas Roundup Renews' (a synthetic herbicide) LC50 was around 8 times lower than the 1% recommended dose. This research adds to evidence that toxicants have a negative impact on amphibian populations, and suggests that more research needs to be conducted to identify other sublethal effects of toxicants and to clarify the implications these effects might have for the amphibian populations in nature.

Abstract:
I report a characterization of several alleles of the myospheroid (mys) gene which encodes the beta-chain of the Drosophils PS integrins. Genetic analysis revealed that the mysˣᴿ, mutation is antimorphic and the mysˣᴺ mutation is hypomorphic. Protein was detected on Western blots from hemizygous mysˣᴿ and mysˣᴺ animals. No integrin beta-subunit was detected in in situ immunofluorescence assays in mysˣᴿ embryos. However, antigen was detected in a small subset of muscle attachment sites in mysˣᴺ embryos. mysˣᴳ and mysˣᴮ alleles behaved, genetically, as null alleles and no protein was detected on Western blots or in immunofluorescence assays. Complementation tests between mysᵗˢ¹, mysᵗˢ³, and the other lethal mys alleles unusual results which suggest that mys may be a transvecting locus.

Abstract:
The 1991 Gulf War revealed to U.S. military planners a serious weakness in the ability of our nation's armed forces to detect and destroy mobile theater ballistic missiles systems before an enemy has the chance to use these weapons at least once, and in some cases, multiple times. Since that time there have been various studies done to show that unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) could be used to more effectively locate these mobile missile threats. However, few, if any studies, have addressed the subject of using these same UAVs to not only locate an enemy target, but to also destroy it. Therefore, this thesis provides a survey of both recent and expected future advances in UAV technology with the purpose of showing that a 'Lethal' UAV is both viable and desirable as an attack platform in the U.S. weapons arsenal. To accomplish this goal the reader is given a historical review of UAVs and their important missions, an in- depth overview of the Department of Defense's most capable UAVs, and a description of the sensors and payloads most likely to be used in the design of a Lethal UAV. Lastly, some possible Lethal UAV systems are presented along with an assessment on the feasibility of fielding such systems. While the primary objective of this thesis is to show that UAVs can be used to effectively locate and destroy mobile weapon systems, this document should also be used as a reference for those persons desiring an update on UAV technology and the DoD programs for testing and utilizing this technology.

Abstract:
Neural networks have recently been applied to real-world speech recognition problems with a great deal of success. This thesis developes a strategy for optimising a neural network known as the Radial Basis Function classifier (RBF), on a large spoken letter recognition problem designed by British Telecom Research Laboratories. The strategy developed can be viewed as a compromise between a fully adaptive approach involving prohibitively large amounts of computation, and a heuristic approach resulting in poor generalisation. A value for the optimal number of kernel functions is suggested, and methods for determining the positions of the centres and the values of the width parameters are provided. During the evolution of the optimisation strategy it was demonstrated that spatial organisation of the centres does not adversely affect the ability of the classifier to generalise. An RBF employing the optimisation strategy achieved a lower error rate than a multilayer perceptron and two traditional static pattern classifiers on the same problem. The error rate of the RBF was very close to the theoretical minimum error rate obtainable with an optimal Bayes classifier. In addition to error rate, the performance of the classifiers was assessed in terms of the computational requirements of training and classification, illustrating the significant trade-off between computational investment in training and level of generalisation achieved. The error rate of the RBF was compared with that of a well established method of dynamic classification to examine whether non-linear time normalisation of word patterns was advantageous to generalisation. It was demonstrated that the dynamic classifier was better suited to small-scale speech recognition problems, and the RBF to speaker-independent speech recognition problems. The dynamic classifier was then combined with a neural network algorithm, greatly reducing its computational requirement without significantly increasing its error rate. This system was then extended into a novel system for visual feedback therapy in which speech is visualised as a moving trajectory on a computer screen.

Seeing Architecture as a political art, this thesis concerns itself with boundaries: those of regimes, of culture, of law, and of social strata. In a silent crisis where sustained inscription of physical and social boundaries evacuate urban space into archipelagos of enclaves, Architecture with only ambiguous claims of public space is rendered both accomplice and victim, impotent against forces of capital and concerns of security. Exposing the absurdities in urban geopolitics and persistent spatial logics of exclusivity is as important as proposing to hack into them. Critical of the innocence of so-called public space and the underlying architectural impasse, the thesis offers an investigative commentary on the state of urban enclaves, while speculating on alternative strategies by designing an embassy, a bounded pseudo-extraterritory and the epitome of an enclave. Through absurd couplings and blatant image-making, a seemingly open US embassy is proposed for Beijing as an imploded fragment of a boundary, its incompleteness buttressed by territories of privilege and its disparate barriers articulated as a mechanism of filtration. Away from popular strategies of conceptual and spatial blurring, the thesis defines an architectural porosity to orchestrate spaces of varying openness, as a nuanced response to both the embassy's double identities and schizophrenic agendas of city building. With an architecture that is diplomatic by function and diplomatic by disposition, one experiments with an agency beyond the single pursuit of public-ness and an escape from the ideological enclave of positivism. Ultimately, the goal is to suggest and develop a methodology of designing with oppositions, irony and latency.

Alexandrou, Olga. "Sub-lethal injury to Salmonella enteritidis." Thesis, University of Surrey, 1997. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/843803/.

Abstract:
The effect of acids on the growth, survival and detection of Salmonella enteritidis PT4 is particularly important in view of the number of outbreaks in which mayonnaise has been implicated as a vehicle. Capacitance measurement was compared with colony counting procedures for the enumeration and determination of sub-lethal injury of Salmonella enteritidis during storage under varied conditions of pH, acidulant and temperature. Capacitance monitoring was shown to offer an improved technique for the measurement of sub-lethal injury in cell populations. Higher levels of sub-lethal injury were detected by the extension of capacitance detection time than were indicated by differential colony counts on selective and non-selective media. The extension of detection time noted with sub-lethally injured cell populations was shown to be due to an extended lag phase when cells were placed in the capacitance growth medium and not the result of delayed detection of the growth of a small, uninjured sub-population. Plots of percentage survival and extension of detection time in survivors gave similar curves for acetic and lactic acid. These acids showed both greater lethality and greater ability to inflict sub-lethal injury than the stronger citric or hydrochloric acid. Sub-lethal injury and lethality were not simply related, as little sub-lethal injury was observed with the stronger acids even under conditions that were ultimately highly lethal. The results indicate that weak organic acids cause more reversible damage to cellular sites prior to death: an observation that has implications for choice of resuscitation procedures when examining acidified foods. Injured cells were found to contain lower levels of ATP than healthy unstressed cells. Inhibition with chloramphenicol did not appear to increase injury and total protein patterns for injured and uninjured cells were similar, suggesting that protection afforded by the synthesis of stress proteins is not a significant factor in this case. The recovery of sub-lethally injured cells in various pre-enrichment and selective enrichment media using capacitance detection times and colony counts on selective and non selective media was determined. Buffered peptone water appeared more effective in recovering injured Salmonella compared to Lactose broth. Additionally, selenite cystine was shown to recover cells faster than the other two selective broths tested; the Muller-Kauffmann Tetrathionate broth and the Rappaport Vassiliadis enrichment broth. In this study, different injury conditions were applied; these included acid stress, heating and freezing. According to the lag phases of injured cell populations, short pre-enrichment is not recommended in the present study.

Braidwood, Luke Anthony. "Engineering resistance to maize lethal necrosis." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2017. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/273678.

Abstract:
Modern agriculture is dependent on both global supply chains and crop monocultures. These features aid the evolution and spread of novel plant pathogens. Limited genetic diversity in commercial crop lines can result in widespread susceptibility to emerging pathogens. Pathogen resistance may be developed through conventional breeding approaches, or a number of transgenic strategies. This thesis focuses on the characterisation of an emerging maize disease, Maize lethal necrosis (MLN), and engineering resistant maize lines using an artificial microRNA (amiRNA) approach. MLN is a synergistic viral disease caused by the interaction of Maize chlorotic mottle virus (MCMV) with any maize-infecting member of the potyviridae. I used next-generation RNA sequencing to characterise the MLN outbreak in East Africa, discovering that local and Chinese strains of the potyvirus Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) typically coinfect with MCMV. A first global MCMV phylogeny was constructed using these samples combined with new Sanger sequencing of samples in Ecuador and Hawaii. The phylogeny supported previous hypotheses of a link between the Chinese and African outbreaks, and suggested a novel link between the Hawaiian and Ecuadorian outbreaks. The SCMV sequences generated demonstrated strong evidence of extensive recombination, in line with previous reports on SCMV and potyviruses. These data also produced first reports of a number of RNA viruses in East Africa, and five novel viral-like sequences, with their presence confirmed by RT-PCR. RNA silencing is an important component of the plant immune response to viral infection. amiRNAs can be used to generate specific and effective viral resistance through Watson- Crick base pairing between the amiRNA and the (RNA) viral genome. Previous amiRNA approaches have targeted invariable genomic regions using consensus sequences. However, the high mutation rate of RNA viruses means single cells contain a variety of mutant genomes, collectively called a quasispecies. To deter the evolution of resistance breaking I devised a novel strategy to include intra-sample variation from NGS data in amiRNA design, and constructs, each containing five of these amiRNAs, were transformed into tropical maize lines. RNA silencing may be hampered by the expression of viral suppressors of silencing (VSRs). Local VSR assays demonstrated that there are no local VSRs in the MCMV genome, while systemic VSR assays showed a possible systemic VSR role for the unique P32 protein, and an interesting link between photoperiod and systemic silencing more generally.
