Abstract:
AbstractThe Sm–Nd isotope systematics and geochemistry of eclogitic, websteritic and peridotitic garnet and clinopyroxene inclusions together with characteristics of their corresponding diamond hosts are presented for the Letlhakane mine, Botswana. These data are supplemented with new inclusion data from the nearby (20–30 km) Orapa and Damtshaa mines to evaluate the nature and scale of diamond-forming processes beneath the NW part of the Kalahari Craton and to provide insight into the evolution of the deep carbon cycle. The Sm–Nd isotope compositions of the diamond inclusions indicate five well-defined, discrete eclogitic and websteritic diamond-forming events in the Orapa kimberlite cluster at 220 ± 80 Ma, 746 ± 100 Ma, 1110 ± 64 Ma, 1698 ± 280 Ma and 2341 ± 21 Ma. In addition, two poorly constrained events suggest ancient eclogitic (> 2700 Ma) and recent eclogitic and websteritic diamond formation (< 140 Ma). Together with sub-calcic garnets from two harzburgitic diamonds that have Archaean Nd mantle model ages (TCHUR) between 2.86 and 3.38 Ga, the diamonds studied here span almost the entire temporal evolution of the SCLM of the Kalahari Craton. The new data demonstrate, for the first time, that diamond formation occurs simultaneously and episodically in different parageneses, reflecting metasomatism of the compositionally heterogeneous SCLM beneath the area (~ 200 km2). Diamond formation can be directly related to major tectono-magmatic events that impacted the Kalahari Craton such as crustal accretion, continental breakup and large igneous provinces. Compositions of dated inclusions, in combination with marked variations in the carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions of the host diamonds, record mixing arrays between a minimum of three components (A: peridotitic mantle; B: eclogites dominated by mafic material; C: eclogites that include recycled sedimentary material). Diamond formation appears dominated by local fluid–rock interactions involving different protoliths in the SCLM. Redistribution of carbon during fluid–rock interactions generally masks any potential temporal changes of the deep carbon cycle.

Trickett, Susannah Kay. "Mapping lithofacies within the D/K1 kimberlite pipe at Letlhakane, Botswana : an assessment of petrographic, geochemical and mineralogical indicators." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2007. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1445971/.

Full text
Abstract:
Mapping and characterisation of the Letlhakane D/Kl kimberlite pipe has allowed a detailed reconstruction of rock forming events and petro- genetic processes during near-surface emplacement of this kimberlite. This study combines different disciplines within geology, petrogra phy, mineral chemistry and bulk rock geochemistry to delineate sep arate mappable lithofacies, and uses these groupings to understand the petrological processes responsible for forming each deposit and how these relate to physical emplacement conditions, chemical com positions of the parental magmas and sub-volcanic intrusion and em placement processes. The primary geological field data was acquired by extended mine visits to examine drill cores through detailed logging and quarry face mapping, and describing variations in petrographic textures between lithofacies. Groundmass spinel compositions were used to establish mineralogical variations within discrete lithofacies and show that some lithofacies were derived from separate batches of magma and that mixing had taken place between lithofacies. Analy sis of perovskite, abundant at Letlhakane, was used with spinel com positions to estimate the crystallisation sequence of the kimberlite groundmass inferred changes in oxygen fugacity in the magma may have been particularly important. Multivariate statistical analysis of the bulk rock geochemistry provided confirmation of the lithofacies groupings which appear to represent discrete units of kimberlite. This also demonstrated a grainsize relationship with the geochemistry. The major conclusions from this thesis show that the D/Kl kimberlite pipe was produced by dynamic and energetic eruptive processes which took place over sufficient time to allow crystallisation of one phase of deposits before the eruption of another. The final chapter combines all the field observations and analytical results into a hypothetical phase diagram for kimberlite magma, extrapolated from high to low pressures and temperatures, and a new emplacement model. This model is specific to the Letlhakane D/Kl pipe, but it may prove to be applicable to other kimberlite bodies.

Kgatshe, Mamedupe Maggie. "Livelihood activities in female-headed households: Letlhakane village." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/538.

Full text
Abstract:
The study to investigates the livelihood activities of female-headed households in Letlhakane village. In its attempt to examine how these activities are organised, maintained and diversified, it analyses the challenges in carrying out the activities and the possible solutions to these challenges at the household level. The study concerns itself with the views of female heads on the livelihood activities done in their households. The main focus is on what these women and their household members were doing for the survival of the entire household in the remote rural village of Letlhakane between December 2004 and January 2005. For this study a qualitative methodology was vital to gather information on the livelihood activities and composition of households and the contribution of the members to the survival of the household. In-depth, follow-up interviews were used as the research method. The informants of the study were female heads from female-headed households. This was supplemented with observation by the researcher on the activities and the physical surroundings of the village. Photos were also taken in the village. This study reaches a number of conclusions. First, female-headed households in Letlhakane village are a diverse group in terms of the activities they embark on and the composition of their households. But they share a common aspect: their livelihood activities are not sufficient for the survival of their households. There were few or no activities for household survival, even for those households that have been female-headed for a long period of time. As compared to single household heads, female heads with partners were better off when judged by overall returns from the activities. The activities in the households studied were keeping goats, fowls and domestic animals such as dogs and subsistence agriculture in the form of growing maize, melons, cabbages, spinach, beans and fruit gardens. They also grew trees and plants for medicinal purposes such as aloes and lemons. Boyfriends were another source of income for some of the female-headed households. Most of the activities were geared towards immediate consumption, and could not stretch as far as investment. Lower returns from the activities affected children from these households in two ways. Firstly, they had to engage in activities to help provide for the household and secondly some had to drop out of school because of insufficient means to afford schooling. Women heads had the responsibilities of caring for and nurturing the family, raising children and providing food for their household in the households studied. The absence of opportunities for survival and insecure livelihood activities pose a threat to the continued survival of these households. The main obstacles to the livelihood activities were lack of resources such as sufficient land and water, cooperation between residents, skills and financial capital. A major difficulty for women especially, is that voices are only listened to in the village if they come from an adult male figure in the household. Positive aspects for livelihoods that came out from the study were the prevalence of social capital amongst neighbours and relatives.

Abstract:
This study investigated the challenges English (as a second language) teachers face in primary schools. The objectives of the study were to identify particular challenges encountered by teachers of English as a second language to young learners and explore how training and development programmes can support teachers in meeting those challenges, describe the reading policies, where they are in place, of Letlhakane Primary Schools and devise solutions/ recommendations on how to tackle the challenges that teachers face in English reading. The sample for the study was drawn from the teachers serving at government primary schools. A sample of 30 teachers was purposively selected from three (3) primary schools identified as large in Letlhakane. The study adopted the following qualitative data collection strategies: focus group discussion, individual interviews and classroom observations. The findings revealed that there are many challenges that teachers face in teaching reading in the schools observed. Some of the challenges include exceptionally large numbers of children in class, limited time, lack of expertise in the teachers and shortage of materials and resources for teaching reading in English. The study recommends that class size be reduced, reading be made the main subject and timetabled, which will give it more time to be taught, teaching of reading must be introduced and made a compulsory course at all levels in colleges of education for primary school teachers. Teachers should be given regular in-service training in the teaching of reading. The Ministry of Basic Education should supply primary schools with the necessary materials for teaching reading and increase those that have a shortage of such resources. It is also recommended that building of libraries furnished with appropriate readers be done and the use of English as a language of instruction in all subjects except for Setswana should be started as early as in standard/grade 1. Reading policies should also be developed in schools so that teachers know what to do or follow when it comes to the teaching of reading.

Abstract:
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Science in Engineering, January 2018
When taking measurements for slope stability analysis using prism monitoring systems, there are various measurement errors which could result in incorrect analysis and subsequent reporting and decision making. As measurements are taken across the open pit, rapid fluctuations and spikes in data are introduced due to changes in atmospheric conditions through which the EDM signal travels. The changes in atmospheric conditions across the open pit affects the slope distance measurements to monitoring prisms and adjustments or corrections to the measured distances must be made. The challenge is that the ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure readings used for computing the atmospheric corrections can only be measured at the transfer beacon, and not at the monitoring prism since it is impractical and costly. To achieve optimal prism monitoring results using atmospheric corrections, there are factors which should be considered. These include the suitable position of the meteorological sensor, suitable monitoring times, mitigation of the effect of mining activities and prism monitoring equipment protection. The objective of this research report is to investigate factors which need to be considered when applying atmospheric corrections to prism monitoring measurements. Trial work was carried out to evaluate the method of adjusting slope distance measurements using GNSS generated reference scale factors. This method also has its limitations, however it is a viable option for adjusting slope distances as the open pit becomes wider and deeper. The method of correcting the slope distances using meteorological data is also an acceptable solution, especially when measurements are taken over short distances. This research report should serve as a guide in making decisions for a suitable method for adjusting slope distance measurements for prism monitoring in an open pit mine environment.

Lebele, Ayanda Agnes. "Access and usage of information and communications technology thorough public access centres in Letlhakeng rural village in Botswana." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/21727.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation acknowledges that despite the global initiatives towards an inclusive information society, there are still some disparities in how communities access and use the information and communication technologies (ICTs) that are available. These disparities, or digital divide, have been interpreted and addressed from different interrelated theoretical view points. The provision of ICTs through public access centres has been widely applauded as one of the strategies to enable especially disadvantaged communities to participate in today‟s information led economy. Botswana has adopted the just noted approach. The country has also developed policies and supportive infrastructure to enable especially the rural communities to be part of the global information society. It is however regrettable that access and usage of ICT‟s is still notably low in rural communities. The concern over this worrisome situation motivated this study to explore the factors that enabled or inhibited access and use of ICTs that were available to the Letlhakeng community through public access centres. This descriptive case study was conducted in four sequential stages: designing, conducting the research, data analysis and development of conclusions. The study was characterized by a continued comparative analysis of data which was collected through interviews; observation and review of related documents from the service providers; the users and non users of the services. The Letlhakeng community had access to ICTs through individually owned stand alone centres and from government supported centres. These centres were used by both residents of Letlhakeng and people from nearby villages. The factors that promoted or inhibited access and use of the available ICTs differed within and between these communities. Despite the observed digital divide, the Letlhakeng community used the ICT public centres to access social services. There is a need to develop strategies to increase access to more technologies in the village and to equip the community
