Abstract:
In a 6 September, 1959 unpublished letter to Reverend Alan Fairhurst, C.S. Lewis clearly denies Universalism. In a second unpublished letter to Fairhurst dated 9 September, 1959, Lewis offered evidence that he was not an Annihilationist. Both letters are unusual because Lewis was normally hesitant to discuss eschatology, particularly the nature of hell. This essay presents both previously unpublished letters in their entirety, discusses the reasons for their importance, sets them in the context of Lewis' other writings on hell and renders a conclusion, based on Lewis' own words, about his positions on Universalism and Annihilationism.

The low interest of students in writing letters must be responded to by the teachers, efforts to increase the passion of writing students, teachers try to improve the techniques and abilities of students through letter writing. The objectives of this study include the first to describe the level of students' ability to write personal letters through student training techniques, second Improve the learning process of writing personal letters to students, and third Improve the ability to write personal letters through training techniques so students achieve grades above KKM. In this study, the research design used was classroom action research (CAR) by taking action through cycle I and cycle II. The scope of this research is classroom learning carried out by teachers and students to make improvements that have an impact on improving student learning outcomes. The results of this study show that in the first cycle the value of the ability to write a personal letter in the first cycle was 66.00 with sufficient categories. While the ability to write a personal letter in the second cycle obtained an average value of 77.83 with a good category experiencing an increase of 11.33 or 17.20%.

Abstract:
In alphabetic orthographies, letter identification is a critical process during the recognition of visually presented words. In the present experiment, we examined whether and when visual form influences letter processing in two very distinct alphabets (Roman and Arabic). Disentangling visual versus abstract letter representations was possible because letters in the Roman alphabet may look visually similar/dissimilar in lowercase and uppercase forms (e.g., c-C vs. r-R) and letters in the Arabic alphabet may look visually similar/dissimilar, depending on their position within a word (e.g., [Formula: see text] - [Formula: see text] vs. [Formula: see text] - [Formula: see text]). We employed a masked priming same–different matching task while ERPs were measured from individuals who had learned the two alphabets at an early age. Results revealed a prime–target relatedness effect dependent on visual form in early components (P/N150) and a more abstract relatedness effect in a later component (P300). Importantly, the pattern of data was remarkably similar in the two alphabets. Thus, these data offer empirical support for a universal (i.e., across alphabets) hierarchical account of letter processing in which the time course of letter processing in different scripts follows a similar trajectory from visual features to visual form independent of abstract representations.

Abstract:
In England c. 1650-1750, before widespread formal schooling for girls or access to higher education for women, the life of the mind (broadly defined) is an important, yet unexplored, field of female experience. It is studied here via the mechanism of letterwriting. Corresponding provided motivated women with not only a forum but also the impetus to engage with intellectual life. By picking up the pen idle musings could be transformed into considered sentences; passively absorbed meanings into actively discussed ideas. From a source base of approximately 4,000 private letters, around 500 were chosen for closer analysis. Intellectual and everyday lives have traditionally been studied separately. Here it is shown that, for women, these two worlds were not only interconnected but that they impacted upon one another in significant ways. After the historiographical introduction (Chapter One), the first two research chapters (Chapters Two and Three) examine letterwriting as an interactive social process, showing that prescriptive literature was not an accurate guide to actual epistolary norms. Chapters Four and Five explore the material and intellectual qualities of a seventeenth-century letter-writer's correspondence networks, taking Mary Evelyn as a case-study. Chapter Six then analyses the ways in which the domestic spaces, inhabited by women, affected their abilities to pursue contemplative activities. Chapter Seven draws together the spatial and temporal concerns expressed by a wider cross-section of women in their letters about the `life of the mind' and the final chapter assesses what intellectual life meant for women at this time. Overall, the case is made for a broader conceptualisation of female intellectualism. The societal codes unfavourable to educating women did not, in fact, eradicate motivations to learn, think and discuss. This research does not propose a model of linear progression, but makes the important point that female aspiration grew upon unstable foundations, born out of a complex patchwork of opportunity and obstacle. As a result, it produced uncertain progress. But, where some achieved, others might follow

Abstract:
Transcription and Translation of the 1658 Jesuit Annual Letter, VietnamNathan Joseph RichardsonDepartment of Spanish and Portuguese, BYUMaster of ArtsThis project provides a translation and two transcriptions (semi-diplomatic and normalized) of the 1658 Jesuit Annua letter sent from the Tonkin kingdom (now Vietnam) to Jesuit authorities back in Portugal. Specifically, the letter, which is housed in the archives of the worldwide Society of Jesus in Rome (folder 89, Japonica Sinica series, fols 286-290v), reports the progress of the Jesuit mission in that kingdom. However, it also contains a fascinating account of contemporary political and other events there. The purpose of this project is to make this letter accessible to a variety of readers. The English translation makes the letter's contents available to an English readership interested in Portugal's expansion in Asia, especially the activities of Jesuit missionaries in Vietnam; the normalized transcription is aimed at those with similar interests who read Portuguese; and the semi-diplomatic transcription, together with a facsimile of the original manuscript, is intended for those who study the history of the Portuguese language and are particularly concerned with the edition of early modern texts.

Full text
Abstract:

Thesis, Paris 4, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA040122.

Full text
Abstract:
This monography intends to highlight the fundamental contribution which was brought by Nicolas Bérauld (c. 1470- c. 1550), humanist born in Orleans at the beginning of the XVIth century, for the benefit of the establishment of a specific french humanism. Teacher, publisher, printer, librarian, jurist and even writer, this multitalented humanist, very famous during his time, has fallen in oblivion nowadays: he is, as the title of this work points it off, a laissé pour compte des « Bonnes Lettres » who needs to get back the appreciation he deserves. He relentlessly intervened in many fields of activity. He brought on a deep thinking about languages, as he was interested in latin improvisation and contributed to the rise of greek, still very little studied at the beginning of the XVIth century. The model of the grammaticus inspired his activities, exactly the way Quintilian figured it in his Institutio Oratoria, which means that he could be at the same time encyclopaedist, publisher, commentator and teacher. This versatile grammaticus was bound to tangle with every field of his time knowledge. This made Bérauld either to pay attention to the aesthetic and creative dimension of language, its « poïetic », or to get involved into the great ideological debates which stired up his time (as for politics, law or religion). To study the career of this humble teacher is also a way to pay tribute to the early stage of humanism, more or less put in the shade by the bright time of the Royal Lectors and of the Pleiade

Abstract:
At the outbreak of war with Germany in September 1939, Turing left Cambridge to take up work as a codebreaker at Bletchley Park, the wartime headquarters of the Government Code and Cypher School (see ‘Enigma’, below). In the early months of 1940, Turing received a letter from the Cambridge mathematician M. H. A. Newman, his teacher, colleague, and friend. Turing replied on 23 March, writing from his lodgings at the Crown Inn (situated in the small village of Shenley Brook End): ‘Dear Newman, Very glad to get your letter, as I needed some stimulus to make me start thinking about logic.’ This was to be the first of five letters that Turing wrote to Newman during the seventeen months before Newman too left Cambridge for Bletchley Park. In his first letter Turing agreed (presumably at Newman’s request—Newman’s letters seem not to have been preserved) to ‘let [Newman] in on . . . the tricks of the conversion calculus’. The conversion calculus, or ‘λ-calculus’, is due to Alonzo Church, with whom Turing studied in Princeton from 1936 to 1938 (see the introduction to Chapter 3). Turing’s letters consist for the most part of detailed remarks on the conversion calculus, often elucidating material from what Turing calls ‘Church’s notes’—a substantial typescript entitled ‘Mathematical Logic’ which was in circulation at Princeton and elsewhere and which Newman was evidently reading. Their correspondence on Church’s work issued in their joint paper ‘A Formal Theorem in Church’s Theory of Types’, which was submitted to Church’s Journal of Symbolic Logic in May 1941 and published in March 1942. The paper was written while Turing played a leading role in the battle to break Naval Enigma (see ‘Enigma’ and Chapters 5–8). Turing would spend his occasional nights off duty ‘coming in as usual . . . , doing his own mathematical research at night, in the warmth and light of the office, without interrupting the routine of daytime sleep’. The two most interesting items of the correspondence, which are printed here, contain substantial passages in which Turing departs from his commentary on Church’s work and expounds his own views.

Abstract:
‘Fame’ discusses C. S. Lewis’s work through the 1940s and the rise of his vocation as an apologist. It considers The Screwtape Letters (1942) and his vastly popular BBC talks (which were all to be consolidated and edited by Lewis as Mere Christianity, 1952). Amid prodigious letter writing, he continues the tradition of walking tours with Warren and others from the 1930s and converses with the Inklings. His thoughts on Milton’s Paradise Lost are discussed along with his ideas on the difference between primary and secondary epics. The Abolition of Man, The Great Divorce, and his cosmic mythological fiction—Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength—are also considered.

Abstract:
This letter reports the resistivity variations for a VO2 thin film on silicon dioxide (SiO2) micromechanical bridges when the coating’s insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) is thermally induced by optical radiation with a 635 nm laser diode or by conduction using a heater. The coating’s resistivity and temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) were calculated as a function of temperature through heating-cooling cycles. A resistivity change of nearly three orders of magnitude through the IMT was observed, and the results obtained for the two different heating methods were compared. A peak TCR of −85%/°C during the heating process and −80.8%/°C during cooling were measured.

Abstract:
V&V constitutes a powerful framework to demonstrate the capability of computational tools in several technological areas. Passing V&V requirements is a needed step before applications. Let’s focus hereafter to the area of (transient) Nuclear Thermal-hydraulic (NTH) and let’s identify V1 and V2 as acronyms for Verification and Validation, respectively. Now, V1 is performed within NTH according to the best available techniques and may not suffer of important deficiencies if compared with other technological areas. This is not the case of V2. Three inherent limitations shall be mentioned in the case of Validation in NTH: 1. Validation implies comparison with experimental data: available experimental data cover a (very) small fraction of the parameter range space expected in applications of the codes; this can be easily seen if one considers data in large diameter pipe, high velocity and high pressure or high power and power density. Noticeably, the scaling issue must be addressed in the framework of V2 which may result in controversial findings. 2. Water is at the center of the attention: the physical properties of water are known to a reasonable extent as well as large variations in values of quantities like density or various derivatives are expected within the range of variation of pressure inside application fields. Although not needed for current validation purposes (e.g. validation ranges may not include a situation of critical pressure and large heat flux) physically inconsistent values predicted by empirical correlations outside validation ranges, shall not be tolerated. 3. Occurrence of complex situations like transition from two-phase critical flow to ‘Bernoulli-flow’ (e.g. towards the end of blow-down) and from film boiling to nucleate boiling, possibly crossing the minimum film boiling temperature (e.g. during reflood). Therefore, whatever can be mentioned as classical V2 is not or cannot be performed in NTH. So, the idea of the present paper is to add a component to the V&V. This component, or step in the process, is called ‘Consistency with Reality’, or with the expected phenomenological evidence. The new component may need to be characterized in some cases and is indicated by the letter ‘C’. Then, the V&V becomes V&V&C. The purpose of the paper is to clarify the motivations at the bases of the V&V&C.

Abstract:
Cak (ISO 639-3 ckh) represents a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh. The language is known as Sak in Rakhaing State, Burma. The total number of native speakers of the language is estimated at approximately 3,000 in Bangladesh and 1,000 in Burma (Simons and Fennig eds. 2017). Although Cak and Sak are mutually understandable where native words are concerned, comprehensibility becomes arduous with Bangla loan words in Cak, and with Arakanese/Burmese loan words in Sak. Until recently, Cak/Sak did not have a script of its own. However, by the beginning of the 21st century, the Cak script was developed and finally published as Ong Khyaing Cak (2013), in which its fundamental system is described. Although well designed overall, the current Cak writing system found in Ong Khyaing Cak (2013) has several shortcomings. Huziwara (2015) discusses the following five instances: (a) No independent letter for /v/, (b) unnecessary letters for the non-phonemic elements such as the voiced aspirated stops and the retroflexes, (c) the arbitrary use of short and long vowel signs, (d) a frequent omission of high tone marks in checked syllables, and (e) multiple ways to denote coda consonants. In this paper, Huziwara (2015) will first be reviewed. Then, the basic phonetic correspondences between Cak in Bangladesh and Sak in Burma will be examined. Finally, based on these two discussions, an orthography to be employed in the forthcoming Cak-English-Bangla-Burmese dictionary, a revised version of Huziwara (2016), will be demonstrated.

Abstract:
Tungsten-doped vanadium oxide has been proved to decrease the transition temperature, which enables vanadium oxide film to be more promising. Besides, the nano-structure can improve the properties of the film when compared with the as-deposited film. In this letter, a nano-structure tungsten-doped vanadium oxide film is proposed. Tungsten-doped vanadium oxide film was deposited on the Si (400) substrate by DC magnetron sputtering. The doping level was controlled by adjusting the sputtering time. Then the as-deposited film was annealed to form a nano-structure film at the temperature of 500 °C for 1 h in high vacuum. The morphology and crystalline structure of such films were characterized by AFM and XRD, respectively. Optical properties of the films were tested by FTIR, mainly comparing the infrared transmission before and after annealing.
