Without a doubt, one of the biggest changes that affected XXth century art is the introduction of words into paintings and, in more recent years, in installations. For centuries, if words were part of a visual composition, they functioned as reference; strictly speaking, they were used as a guideline for a better perception of the subject represented. With the developments of the XXth century, words became a very important part of the visual composition, and sometimes embodied the composition itself. Abstract:
Abstract This chapter draws together comparative evidence deriving from people and places associated with Charlemagne’s court that provide parallels to the script, verse, design, and materials of Hadrian’s epitaph. Charlemagne’s chapel was being constructed in Aachen at the same time as the epitaph was made, and this chapter argues that the epitaph is part of the same aesthetic impulse and cultural energy. Three court poems, composed by Alcuin, Theodulf, and Angilbert in the period between late 794 and late 796 are analysed, alongside manuscripts from the ‘Court School’, especially Godesscalc’s Evengelistary and Dagulf’s Psalter, arguing that the latter was made as a gift for Hadrian only a couple of years before his death. The use of display scripts in these and related manuscripts, such as the Abbeville Gospels (which is linked to Angilbert’s patronage), is analysed, arguing that scribes were aware of earlier epigraphic scripts of types that could be seen in Rome. Parallels are drawn between the use of painted lettering in manuscripts and on the walls of palace sites (surviving especially at Paderborn). The meaning of the painted inscription for the dedication of the Aachen chapel is discussed, in the context of modifications to one of Prosper’s epigrams and Einhard’s intertextual references to it in his description of Charlemagne’s last days. The eschatological aspects of the Aachen dedication verses are reinforced by the number symbolism encoded in the architectural design of the chapel itself.

Abstract:
Abstract In archaic Greek lettering no less than in other scripts there is a distinction between the formal and the informal or cursive style. It is not a conspicuous difference, like that between a formal inscription on stone from Pompeii and a contemporary graffito on one of the house-walls; and for that reason it is apt to be overlooked in modern commentaries on the chronological development of the Greek alphabet. But it is essential to remember that caution must be used when we compare the lettering of any inscription on stone or bronze with that of any painted inscription. The letter-forms used by the vase-painter will almost certainly be considerably more developed than those cut by a contemporary mason.

Abstract The chapter provides the detailed physical description of Hadrian’s epitaph, including layout, decoration, and script. Epigraphic parallels and the use of capitalis lettering in earlier inscriptions and manuscripts are discussed, drawing attention especially to the lettering devised for inscriptions commissioned by Pope Damasus I in the late fourth century by Filocalus. The development of capital scripts used for inscriptions set up in Rome in the fifth, sixth, and seventh centuries is analysed, marking both the religious and political choices made by patrons in the use of particular script types as well as the content and location of the texts. Eighth-century inscriptions, from the pontificates of John VII, Gregory II, and Gregory III are discussed, as well as a group from the mid-eighth century, commissioned by noblemen, stressing that the meaning of such inscriptions often lay in the intersection between text, script, medium, and location.

Abstract:
Ideas, concepts, perceptions, dreams cannot be seen by eyes or recorded instrumentally (with the help of photo or filming), they can only be the subject of speculation, which is purely individual. Therefore, a long range of images that can be qualified as cognitive graphics is used for their visualization. The most diverse visual means, such as letters of different alphabets and headsets, numbers, mathematical, chemical, biological, astrological, etc. signs and formulas, maps and cartoids, diagrams, schemes, tables, pictograms, etc. can be the components of cognitive graphics. Such components are included in the lettering text or generate extended cognitive-graphic texts that can duplicate (or be duplicated by) lettering texts, exist in unity with the lettering texts or autonomously. Collections of the latter make atlases of cognitive graphics. As an alternative to letter texts, cognitive graphics are the means of facilitating or even creating an opportunity for communication for those who are uncomfortable or inaccessible with letter texts (children, persons of an artistic and intuitive type, introverts, etc.). Cognitive graphics are optionally used in everyday communication, are used much wider in the education process at all levels, and are obligatory used in certain types of professional communication (mathematics, chemistry, geology, etc.). In the latter case, both hard-coded versions and the author’s idiostyles exist, although the most common are usual group patterns. Depending on the type of cognitive graphics, cognitive-graphic texts are created using a pen and pencil (pencils), drawing accessories, paints and brushes, special equipment (drawing apparatus, stereoscope, pinhole camera, printing equipment), or a computer. In the latter case, we are talking about computer cognitive graphics.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the evolution of the vowel–consonant notation. In particular, it discusses François Viète's contribution to algebra through his use of vowels to represent unknowns and consonants to represent known quantities. Viète, a French mathematician, expressed his famous computation for π‎ in proposition II of his Isagoge. Even Christoff Rudolff and Nicolas Chuquet had no proper notation for expressing such an infinite sum of nested square roots. Viète was showing us an intimate link between Greek geometry and algebra, a link from the mathematics of lines, figures, and solids to the underlying channels of symbolic algebra. The chapter also considers Viète's work on what are now called “homogeneous equations” as well as the significance of his lettering system to symbolic algebra.

Abstract:
Baskerville was, originally, both a teacher of writing and a carver of headstones, the main evidence for his skills is a slate that hangs in the Library of Birmingham advertising Baskerville’s services in writing and letter-carving. In the archives there are also examples of Baskerville’s handwriting, which survive in letters to friends and acquaintances. These letters have previously been examined simply for the light they shed on his relationships and business. Baskerville’s hand, however, has neither been scrutinised for its style nor assessed in regard to his typeface. This chapter considers both Baskerville’s handwriting and his lettering and presents the evidence for his relationship with the writing masters of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In doing so, it sheds new light on the antecedents of Baskerville’s typeface and demonstrates, in particular, how his handwriting influenced the design of his printing type.

Therefore, this study aims to examine the usefulness of the combination of tall-man lettering and a simple but new orthographic alteration, symbol prefixing.
