Abstract In the same years in which Jews were elected to the Dutch national assembly (the Batavian Convention), Jews on Curaçao were characterized in a letter received on the island in an unmistakably anti-Semitic way. The author was the prominent French official Victor Hugues, based in Guadeloupe. This paper aims to analyse and contextualise the early literary reception in the Netherlands of Hungarian-Jewish Nobel laureate Imre Kertész (1929–2016). Born into a Jewish family in Budapest, Kertész was deported to Buchenwald and Auschwitz and later faced censorship and a general lack of interest when he tried to publish his novelised Holocaust experiences. This article describes the role played by Dutch banks in the confiscation of Jewish property during World War II. ABN AMRO's predecessors, then seven commercial banks, surrendered the lion's share of Jewish financial assets to the Nazis. How can this be explained? One possible answer is that the banks allowed their own, commercial, interests to prevail over those of their Jewish clients. Other factors were: strategies of deception by the German authorities, low level of resistance among Dutch Jews, German pressure on banks to release Jewish assets and, finally, the lengthy duration of the war.

This thesis examines the philosophy of language of Rabbi Dov Baer of Mezritch (d. 1772), one of the most influential and creative early Hasidic masters, and the teacher whose students effectively created the Hasidic movement. I argue that Dov Baer offers an innovative approach to the role of language in religious life and its relationship to the inner workings of the human psyche. Abstract:
Forty-five works by Surinamese painters, sculptors, draftsmen, printmakers and ceramicists, representing an eclectic artistic community comprising Amerindian, African, Indian, Indonesian, Jewish, Dutch and other European cultures, concentrated mainly in the Surinamese capital of Paramaribo. Works were drawn from public and private collections, including Suriname's State Collection, the Suriname Bank, the Suriname Museum Foundation, and the EBS Power Company, among others. The show was reenacted upon its return to Suriname.
