In the course of several centuries, Latvian personal names were recorded only in foreign-language texts and their spelling was adapted to the languages of these sources – namely, it did not reflect Latvian pronunciation. This thesis investigates a neglected sub-genre of women’s writing, which I have termed the literature of the boarding house. In language courses, oral skills are frequently a source of anxiety for students. Moreover, in some occasions, students are unfamiliar with the evaluation criteria used to assess their performances, increasing their level of stress when facing the oral exam. This article describes a series of activities based on the introduction of several formative and summative self- and peer-assessment activities in a Year 2 Spanish module, aimed at students in the Modern Languages Programme at the University of Nottingham. Students have varied profiles and learning styles, as their programmes include Modern Languages and some variations of Joint Honours programmes with languages. The activities aimed to give students some extra tools to allow them to better monitor their oral performance, potentially easing their concern on the linguistic elements which would be assessed and letting them autonomously identify their own strengths and the areas where they might need improvement.

Due to historical circumstances, the German language has had a large impact on Latvian surnames. Surnames of German origin constitute the second largest group of Latvian surnames – after those of Latvian origin. Unfortunately, this group is not yet adequately researched; most publications on Latvian surnames discuss those of Latvian origin. This article offers an insight into surnames in Kurzeme, a region of Latvia. The particular group under analysis are the surnames of German origin registered in Kurzeme in the 1935 census. This group is rather heterogenous, and the etymologies of some surnames have several hypothetic versions. In many surnames, German nouns or adjectives are easily recognizable, e.g., Apfelbaums < German Apfelbaum ‘apple-tree’, Langzāms < German langsam ‘slow’, or Veiss < German weiß ‘white’. For many of them, there exist corresponding German surnames as well. Many of these surnames are compounds, often with a second component such as -bahs (< German Bach ‘brook’), -bergs (< German Berg ‘hill’), -dorfs (< German Dorf ‘village’), -felds (< German Feld ‘field’), -šteins (< German Stein ‘stone’) and -tāls (< German Tal ‘valley’). There are hybrid compounds, too. Among them, there is a specific group with the second component -sons (< German Sohn ‘son’), because t hey rarely have corresponding G erman surnames. Their first component often is a Latvian first name, and they seem to have arisen during the period when Latvians were assigned their surnames.

Abstract Trade is one of the principal engines connecting the peoples of the world, if not the most momentous one. It involves the dissemination of goods along with knowledge, ideas, values and norms, overcoming various difficulties and obstacles in the process, of which the language barrier is not the least taxing. Merchants are keenly aware of the linguistic diversity of the world and have since old developed strategies for not letting it interfere with business, strategies they adjust to exigencies. This chapter examines three historical models of how commerce impacts language, trade on the Silk Roads, the creation of the Mediterranean Lingua Franca, and the linguistic effects of the Dutch East India Company’s globe-spanning transactions.
