Abstract The private consumption issue is classified as a global one. The urgency of the problem considered is due to the dramatic quantitative, qualitative and structural changes in the system of needs of the Russian population; a reduction in the level of financial resources of the predominant part as well as increased differentiation in terms of consumption between social groups. We consider the dynamics of changes in rational rates of food consumption on average per year by the Russian population from 1960 to 2020, as well as the actual values of consumed food and durable goods for 2018-20
