Abstract:

Of all the natural resources available on earth, it could be argued that water is the most important and essential to human health and well - being. Water is a scarce and finite resource and must therefore be used in such a manner as to preserve and protect it. Statistically, South Africa is a water scarce country and water demand is on the increase due to an increase in population, economic development and living standards. The scarcity creates a need to protect the little water South Africa has and so various policies, laws, guidelines and entities exist to control the use and management of water. South Africa has recently put plans into action to establish nine catchment management agencies, as provided for in the National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998), to deal with the management of water at a catchment level. The establishment and operation of these nine institutions are behind schedule and the outcome of the process thus far is below the desired level. Management of natural resources is done by a wide range of institutions with a variety of management styles according to certain management principles and plans. These management styles can be adjusted to suit the management of most types of natural resources, and because of the interdisciplinary nature of water management, elements from all the management styles can be drawn from to suit water management. Three management and governance styles or concepts were identified for this study. The characteristics and principles of these concepts have been divided into different aspects or broad themes of water management. The National Water Act 36 of 1998, specifically the sections related to catchment management agencies, is reviewed to identify the provisions that might be preventing them from adopting the principles of successful management as suggested by the three governance and management styles.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes an empirical investigation of performance measurement management at the operational level of five organizations, ranging in size from annual revenues of under US$100 million to over US$8 billion. In attempting to identify what advice there is for operational level managers, the literature review revealed that much of the existing research does not specifically address the operational level and does not consider the distinct characteristics of the operational level. An additional literature review identified that the operational level characteristics include a real-time, short-term focus, having many brief and fragmented activities and being frequently interrupted. An empirical investigation was undertaken to investigate the characteristics of the operational level and to identify how managers at this level manage the performance of their groups. The empirical data revealed that operational level characteristics identified in the literature were valid for the participants. In particular, the participating operational level managers face severe time constraints and are responsible for as many as 75 activities at one time, all of which require objectives and measures. The conclusion drawn was that any method used to develop objectives and measures by the participating operational level managers would be used many times and should be simpler and quicker to use than those methods described in the literature. The most thorough method described in the literature was identified and selected as the basis for a set of guidelines, which was then evaluated by the participants. The conclusions from the evaluation were that the guidelines are correct, in principle, but were still not simple enough to be used by the participants. The fmdings of this research can only be said to be valid for the participants, however, the author believes that they may be more widely applicable. Further research is needed to determine how widely the findings might apply.

Brachman, Barry Jeffrey. "Resource management in application level message transfer systems." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29060.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the design of the resource management components of application level, store-and-forward message transfer systems. Although these systems have for some time been used to transport electronic mail, there has been little investigation into designs that emphasize performance and correctness aspects. Current message transfer systems are loosely structured in that there is little, if any, end-to-end resource management. The thesis begins by characterizing the message handling environment and comparing the message transfer approach to that of connection-based file transfer. Current message transfer systems have a fundamental limitation in that the largest message that can be transferred is determined by the amount of storage available at any of the intermediate hosts along the message's route. Major components of a message transfer system and design alternatives are discussed. Existing schemes that deal with solutions designed for lower networking levels are reviewed and shown to be inadequate in addressing the problems in the message handling environment. A framework for designing message transfer systems is presented. Systems adhering to the design methodology address performance issues in a structured way. Two new techniques are central to this framework: message fragmentation and the message stream. Message fragmentation is introduced as a means of delivering arbitrary size messages. The message stream abstraction is the basis of flow control and congestion control. A hierarchical technique for deadlock prevention in the message handling environment is introduced. In this method, the structured buffer pool approach is used as a top level and is integrated with a second method at the bottom level to produce a practical, deadlock-free message transfer system. Methods for providing transit buffer management and recipient buffer space allocation are discussed. A simulation study of some of the performance aspects of message streams and recipient buffer space allocation is presented.

Brelsford, Noelle. "Do middle level managers contribute to strategic development? : a study of the practices of middle level managers in strategic renewal." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2014. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/378257/.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative research explores the third-order sensemaking practices of middle level managers that could be seen as antecedents of strategic renewal within their organisations, and whether these micro-practices are context-specific or generalisable and transferable. The intention is to answer calls for deepening our understanding of the practices of middle level managers on influencing and changing strategic actions (Jarzabkowski and Spee, 2009; Kwee et al., 2011; Mantere, 2008; Rouleau and Balogun, 2007, 2010), and contribute to the juxtaposition of the bodies of literatures on strategic renewal, Strategy-as-practice, middle level managers and sensemaking. The every day micro-practices of middle level managers have the potential for far-reaching consequences at a macro-level on their organisation’s competitive advantage. The important role of middle level managers in strategy processes has been recognised for a considerable time (Bower, 1970; Burgelman, 1983; Floyd and Lane 2000; Floyd and Wooldridge, 1992, 1997; Nonaka, 1998). However, it has only been in the last decade that there has been a sizeable increase in the literature which discusses the role of middle level managers in strategy processes, viewing them as key strategic actors (Currie and Procter, 2005). In addition, there is also increasing focus on the role of middle level managers emerging from within a number of key process themes in the strategy literature: Strategy-as-practice (Jarzabkowski, 2005, 2008; Jarzabkowski and Spee, 2009; Johnson et al., 2003, 2007; Whittington, 1996, 2003); strategic renewal (Agarwal and Helfat, 2009; Kwee et al., 2011); and sensemaking (Maitlis and Sonenshein, 2010; Rouleau and Balogun, 2007, 2010). This socially constructed qualitative strategic management research (Patton, 2002) is looking at the phenomenon that preceeds and gives rise to strategic renewal, a second-order change process, through the sensemaking practices of 40 middle level managers in different change contexts, combined with an interpretivist approach. Interviews were held with 40 middle level managers involved in organisational transformation. The interviews intended to provide explanatory depth and causal insight to the complex, inter-related and dynamic phenomena in this study (Sayer,1992; 2000), and the agency of the middle level managers (Archer, 2007). Findings indicate that middle level managers’ formal conscious sensemaking practices are more likely to contribute to exploitation, whilst informal sub-conscious sensemaking practices are more likely to contribute to exploration within strategic renewal. Evidence is emerging that ‘issue recognition’ and ‘feeling emotions’ with related informal and sub-conscious sensemaking mechanisms have greater causal effects on renewal, and that enabling factors such as organisational size, diversity and culture, as well as external influences, underpin third-order sensemaking processes among middle level managers.

Abstract:
The common focus of the three studies in this dissertation is the tension between cooperative, efficiency-enhancing behaviors and the narrowly self-interested equilibrium behavior predicted by standard game theory. In recent years, the tenets of the latter have been challenged by empirical findings that indicate that humans are more cooperative than traditional normative theory predicts. Basic concepts and predictions of game theory and past research on cooperative tendencies are reviewed. The first experimental study here involves a two-person one-shot extensive-form trust game. The major finding is that the Mach-IV personality test can help screen reciprocators from non-reciprocators. In the second study, subjects in a standard voluntary Contribution Mechanism (VCM) are rematched at each trial. If rematched at random, contributions decline over rounds as in many other VCM experiments. If, however, subjects, without their knowledge, are rearranged into groups according to the amount of their contribution, contribution rates remain higher because cooperators do not get discouraged by free riders. This finding is accounted for by the goodwill accounting framework of McCabe and Smith (1999). In the third experimental study, a standard VCM is embedded in intergroup conflict as groups compete for a fixed prize that is divided among the members of the winning group, either equally or proportionally to individual members' contributions. A group's wining probability depends on how its public good contributions compare to the contributions of the competing group. Given specific parameterization, non-contribution in such a two-level interaction is no longer the dominant strategy, even though it would be in the corresponding one-level ACM. Further, equilibrium contributions are higher under proportional than under equal prize division. On the aggregate level, the data support equilibrium predictions, even though there is some evidence of over-contribution under group competition and individual contribution patterns are very idiosyncratic. A simple reinforcement learning model (See Roth and Erev, 1995) accounts well for the change in aggregate data over trials. The implications of all three studies are that cooperativeness can be enhanced by the means of screening, social structure and incentive schemes.

An overview of the operation of a modem, high bypass ratio, dual spool turbofan engine is presented to identify the multitude of system level interactions that must be considered when developing such an engine. The Design Structure Matrix (DSM) is used to demonstrate how it maps these relationships and, if utilized in the right manner, can reduce the occurrence of escapes (i.e., a deliverable that does not meet customers' expectations). The context of this thesis is the complex system design, and development process, of a commercial aircraft gas turbine engine (specifically the Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engine family). Unlike previous gas turbine engine DSM work, the matrix created in this thesis is generated from the point of view of the Systems Engineering organizations at Pratt & Whitney. The sequenced matrix captures the non-local knowledge that is currently absent from Pratt & Whitney's existing knowledge management documentation. Testing the DSM against past instances of rework and unexpected design issues substantiates its validity as the basis for performing this function. Finally, examples are presented to demonstrate how the DSM can be used to prevent future escapes.

Huhta, A. P. (Ari-Pekka). "Restorative mowing on semi-natural grasslands: community-level changes and species-level responses." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2001. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9514259947.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This thesis operates at two levels of ecological research, describing the effects of withdrawal and re-introduction of management on grasslands. The aim of the community-level survey was to explore the effects of abandonment, mowing and grazing on semi-natural meadows in northern Finland. At the species level, the aim was to evaluate the responses of three monocarpic meadow species to various degrees of simulated grazing under natural growth conditions. The community-level studies suggest that strongly competitive grass species with rapid vegetative growth, especially those forming tussocks, are able to retain or increase their cover in abandoned meadows. However, most species are able to persist in a meadow for a long time after abandonment, even when a group of immigrants arrive. This leads to a temporary increase in species diversity, and it may therefore be used as an indicator of ongoing succession. Nevertheless, abandonment is harmful for the rare archaeophytic species in the long run. Late mowing does not have extensive short-term impacts on grass-dominated semi-natural meadows. Therefore, it is neither an efficient nor a substitutional way of management when the goal is to restore a formerly grazed pasture. Mowing executed early in the season may, however, be a more appropriate way of inducing changes in species composition and enhancing species richness. According to the results of the species-level studies, Erysimum strictum and Rhinanthus minor tolerate well minor apical damage, while more severe damage has a detrimental impact on the performance of both species. The observed differences in regrowth responses between the two species are presumably due to their different habitat requirements in relation to competition. The species-level experiment with two late-flowering populations of field gentian Gentianella campestris ssp. campestris revealed that the southern, Swedish population that has been regularly grazed and mown overcompensated for the intermediate (50%) damage level, whereas the northern, Finnish field gentians growing in unmanaged habitats showed at best partial or full compensation. Regular grazing and mowing have presumably favoured grazing-tolerant plant species, i.e. species with a good regrowth capacity. Herbivory reshapes grassland plant communities in two ways: directly by affecting the survival and reproductive success of individual plants and indirectly by changing the competitive environment. Tall and competitive perennial species suffer relatively more from damage than true grassland species, i.e. small herbs and grasses, which are better able to tolerate regular tissue losses and respond to damage within the ongoing growing season. As a result, certain species benefit from grazing and mowing in the sense that they may gain more through competitive relaxation than they lose in defoliation.

Semiconductor capital equipment is manufactured in a high-mix and low-volume environment at Varian Semiconductor Equipment business unit of Applied Materials. Due to the demand growth over the past years, Varian has been continuously improving its operations practices to increase the factory capacity without investing additional floor space or labor shifts. A hypothesis-driven analysis is used to identify, understand and formulate solutions for the issues that Varian faces in order to increase its production capacity. Based on the preliminary analysis, we develop a hypothesis tree and we identify effective operation time reduction and cycle time reduction to be the two root hypotheses. Inventory shortages increase the effective operation time of the production lines and lower Varian's production capacity, especially those high-volume low-variety assemblies built in supermarket build area. We present a consumption based assembly level inventory management system based on the base-stock model to reduce assembly shortages on downstream production lines. This system will be used to manage those finished goods inventory of supermarket assemblies on a make-to-stock basis for all downstream consumptions, and it will allow Varian to increase those assemblies' service levels while reducing finished goods inventory level of assemblies by 30%. Supermarket piece parts are the components used to build assemblies; piece part shortages delay the scheduled delivery of assemblies to the downstream production lines thereby causing assembly shortages. For piece part shortages caused by inaccurate inventory records, Varian lacks an effective solution. We present two component level inventory management systems for reducing piece part shortages. In short to middle term, we present a secured tablet solution as a self-check-out terminal to provide better user experience aiming at reducing inaccurate inventory records by 50%. In middle to long term, we present a Vertical Lift Module solution to completely eliminate inaccurate inventory record while reducing storage space.

Abstract:
The general problem is that while technical engineering firms today require entry-level, full-time engineers to possess leadership skills, companies have failed to indicate which leadership competencies are most important in their recruitment and hiring process. This study's contributions could have implications for the long-term career prospects of engineers as well as the future outlook and sustainability of engineering companies. The specific problem is that various disciplines in the engineering profession, such as the construction sector, have yet to clearly define which leadership competencies are most important for the job market in their specific areas. Advancements in this regard are important for both entry-level engineers and engineering companies given the strong competition in local and international markets. The purpose of this qualitative study using a multiple case study design was to explore the views of managers in the construction industry on leadership competencies most needed in the job market for entry-level civil engineers. The study was framed by three concepts of engineering leadership. The research question was: How do the perceptions of managers in the construction industry establish a basis of leadership competencies most needed in the job market for entry-level civil engineers? Applying the knowledge gained from this inquiry has the potential for positive social impact by driving reforms in educational curricula and professional settings and with industry leaders to further the personal development of early-stage civil engineers, supporting their career success and the success of their companies.

Abstract:
Due to knowledge being difficult to imitate, effective knowledge management provides several key competitive advantages. It involves managing knowledge within organizations in order to ensure the right knowledge reaching the right person at the right time.Scania CV AB is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of trucks, busses and engines for marine and industry purposes. As part of the work with streamlining processes, knowledge management has become a focus area within their R&D. This master thesis has been carried out at four groups grouped under the section UTP Process support, consisting of a mechanical workshop, logistics, improvement coaches, and logistics and measurement. The purpose was to identify areas with potential for improvement, and present suggestions for improvements, with reusability of knowledge as the main focus.A total of 132 interviews and surveys, and four workshops were conducted in order to gather data, generate improvement proposals and anchor ideas. A literature study was conducted to provide a frame of reference.A four-quadrant model was generated, to make possible the mapping of knowledge work within the involved groups. This aims to provide a general model supporting improvements in knowledge management, by establishing a conceptual frame of reference where ambition and current state can be compared, providing a base for improvements and follow-ups over time. The improvement coach group is at the forefront of the issues addressed in this thesis report, which in this context also poses their primary challenge. Suggestions on how work can keep improving are presented, including further developments of the group's so called skills matrix. For the other groups, freeing up time of experienced employees is recommended in order to transfer knowledge to less experienced colleagues. Furthermore, improving the availability of documents controlling the employees’ work is recommended, as well as ensuring these are fully updated to a larger extent. Lastly, the groups should work on increasing knowledge exchange between them and external parties, such as customers and suppliers.Future recommendations include carrying out a pilot study of the proposed model, in order to improve the model and examine how different business units within product development organizations can benefit from it. A follow-up should be carried out to examine if the recommendations have made a difference.

Gupta, Vishakha. "Coordinated system level resource management for heterogeneous many-core platforms." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/42750.

Abstract:
A challenge posed by future computer architectures is the efficient exploitation of their many and sometimes heterogeneous computational cores. This challenge is exacerbated by the multiple facilities for data movement and sharing across cores resident on such platforms. To answer the question of how systems software should treat heterogeneous resources, this dissertation describes an approach that (1) creates a common manageable pool for all the resources present in the platform, and then (2) provides virtual machines (VMs) with multiple `personalities', flexibly mapped to and efficiently run on the heterogeneous underlying hardware. A VM's personality is its execution context on the different types of available processing resources usable by the VM. We provide mechanisms for making such platforms manageable and evaluate coordinated scheduling policies for mapping different VM personalities on heterogeneous hardware. Towards that end, this dissertation contributes technologies that include (1) restructuring hypervisor and system functions to create high performance environments that enable flexibility of execution and data sharing, (2) scheduling and other resource management infrastructure for supporting diverse application needs and heterogeneous platform characteristics, and (3) hypervisor level policies to permit efficient and coordinated resource usage and sharing. Experimental evaluations on multiple heterogeneous platforms, like one comprised of x86-based cores with attached NVIDIA accelerators and others with asymmetric elements on chip, demonstrate the utility of the approach and its ability to efficiently host diverse applications and resource management methods.

Abstract:
Documentation has a become part of everyday life for individuals in the corporate world. With the increase in required documentation, the size of the data is also growing, which requires maintenance and storage facilities. Due to the growth in data, metadata, data about data, has been created. Metadata helps users recover relevant data easily and is used throughout the industry. Though it may take up less space, metadata is also increasing to keep up with the needs of companies, which means additional costs are accumulating. Data can be classified into two types: active data and archived data. Active data is the data which is frequently used while archived data is the data which is used irregularly or infrequently. In order to improve database space management, this thesis proposes a mechanism where the metadata associated with low priority data is stored in a compressed format using Burrows-Wheeler’s transform compression algorithm.

Full text
Abstract:

The report is part of the university´engineer program within Industrial Organization and Economics with specialization in Logistics and Managment at Jönköping´s university.

Skoghall´s mill underlies a large supply chain, which means there should be a lot of areas in need of small improvement measures. This report illustrates a small part of one of these areas and is focused on the loading distribution services in the terminal Vänern.

At the moment there´s a very unequal load of the load carriers SECU box and Container at the terminal. Skoghall´s mill has the desire to equalize the high and low load levels of the 2 loading carriers named previously. One of the options to solve the problem is to set a limit of how much the carriers can load per week or per day. The mill also wants it to be investigated if the proposition would influence the customers in any way and if both the company and its customers could handle a lower level of delivery services in case the proposition was to be applied.

The goal to be achieved with this thesis is to provide balance to the unequall loading of the 2 load carriers, SECU and Container, and investigate whether or not the Skoghall´s mill´s customers, could manage the lower degree of delivery service that the proposition would imply.

For this goal to be achieved, random sample investigations were taken from orders of a customer that is provided with SECU load carriers and the same was made with a Container´s customer. The orders were analysed from production to consumption on the investigation.

As a result of random sample investigations and customers´s evaluations, the thesis shows that it is possible to lower the resources at Vänerterminalen. This means that there is a full possibility to limitate the loadingprocess without causing any major effects on Stora Enso´s customers. Further investigation should be made by the company, such as random sample investigations of more customers, to generate a better picture of what the proposition would mean in reality. In case that investigation turn out to be not in accordance with the thesis, the authors worked on other two solution propositions. Both of them also would contribute to a more even torrent of unloading at Vänerterminalen.

Thomas, Joshua A. "10b5-1 Plans and Earnings Management by High-Level Executives." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2015. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1183.

Full text
Abstract:
Using historical firm financial and insider trading information, this paper examines whether high-level insiders manipulate earnings ahead of their own 10b5-1 equity transactions. The empirical evidence suggests that high-level executives appear to manipulate earnings through real activities such as abnormal discretionary expenditures and abnormal cash flows from operations to influence equity prices ahead of their own transactions under Rule 10b5-1. Evidence also suggests that executives appear to be unlikely to engage in earnings management through highly scrutinized means such as accruals. An interpretation of these results is that high-level executives may be using 10b5-1 plans as an offensive tool to trade with the knowledge of inside information, which appears to be in direct opposition to the defensive mechanism that 10b5-1 plans are intended to represent.

Abstract:
Power networks are under increasing pressure to maintain operation within permissible voltage and current limits with higher penetrations of renewable energy. This thesis aims to develop and evaluate a practical and economical way to control key domestic appliances to alleviate stress caused by high level of renewable energy penetration. The first objective in this thesis is to develop a network stress identification technique that does not rely on communication infrastructure. Traditionally, there is an emphasis on using centralized control strategies for demand side management (DSM) involving a central brain which collects information from each individual device and sends out commands to them which schedules their operation. This approach relies heavily on communication infrastructure and introduces security challenges, which are not problems for distributed or decentralised control. Whilst the latter two approaches have the virtue of scalability and flexibility, they require a good network model or good estimation of network condition without real time communication for effective control. A tap change detection approach via local voltage measurement has been developed and validated to enable the domestic smart appliance to perceive the network stress in three different levels across the power network without any real-time communication. The second objective is to explore the economic benefits associated with the usage of electric hot water tanks (EHWTs) as an alternative to home batteries or electric vehicles for demand response. To do this, an optimization approach for sizing of the EHWT is proposed. Real-world hot water usage data is analysed and applied, revealing four typical hot water usage patterns and 100-litre as the most common optimal tank size for UK consumer. Finally, since increasing PV generation has risen voltage concerns in various locations across the UK, such as in Cornwall, this thesis investigated to what extend intelligent EHWTs can be used to alleviate the LV network stress caused by the high level of PV penetration. A Monte-Carlo simulation is carried out on real UK LV networks, showing that the presence of intelligent EHWTs could improve both the voltage and current performance of the LV network and allow 50% more PV installations beyond the network's original capacity.

Abstract:
It has been envisaged that in future 5G networks user devices will become an integral part of the network by participating in the transmission of mobile content traffic typically through Device-to-device (D2D) technologies. In this context, we promote the concept of Mobility as a Service (MaaS), where the mobile network edge is equipped with necessary knowledge on device mobility in order to meet specific service requirements for clients via a small number of helper devices. In this thesis, we propose a MaaS paradigm based frameworks to address clients’ requirement with regards to content offloading service and connectivity relaying service via network assisted D2D communication framework. To address content traffic offloading, we present a device-level Information Centric Networking (ICN) architecture that is able to perform intelligent content distribution operations according to necessary context information on mobile user mobility and content characteristics. Based on such an architecture, we further introduce device-level online content caching and offline helper selection algorithms in order to optimise the overall system efficiency. In particular, this piece of work sheds distinct light on the importance of user mobility data analytics based on which helper selection can lead to overall system optimality. Based on representative user mobility models, we conducted realistic simulation experiments and modelling which have proven the efficiency in terms of both network traffic offloading gains and user-oriented performance improvements. In addition, we show how the framework can be flexibly configured to meet specific delay tolerance constraints according to specific context policies. With regard to connectivity relaying service, we introduce a novel scheme of using D2D communications for enabling data relay services in partial Not-Spots, where a client without local network access may require data relay by other devices. Depending on specific social application scenarios, this piece of work introduces tailored algorithms in order to achieve optimised data relay service performance. The approach is to exploit the network’s knowledge on its local user mobility patterns to identify best helper devices for participating in data relay operations. This framework is also supported with our proposed helper selection optimisation algorithm based on prediction of individual user mobility. According to our simulation analysis, based on both theoretical mobility models and real human mobility data traces, the proposed scheme is able to flexibly support different service requirements in specific social application scenarios.

Sasraku, Francis M. "Regulatory Structures and Bank –Level Risk Management in Ghanaian Banks." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/15021.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examines the impact of certain bank-specific variables on bank stability in Ghana, in the context of the existing regulatory structures. The thesis examines this issue along two main themes. The first part of this study examines whether two of the commonly used measures of banking stability, the CAMELS and the Z-Score, provide similar or different results in assessing the stability of banks in Ghana. The results of this study show that the use of the CAMELS and the Z-score measures could lead to different outcomes in terms of bank stability in Ghana. This suggests that the traditional micro-prudential CAMELS framework should be complemented with the Z-score which inherently has both micro and macro-prudential characteristics of signaling weaknesses in bank stability, and to enhance the management of bank stability. The second part of the study examines the impact of some bank-specific variables on bank stability. Using the panel data approach, the results show that while bank size, regulatory governance, regulatory independence and origin impact significantly on the stability score, there was no significant impact in terms of interbank borrowing and non-performing loans. Further analysis using the Blinder –Oaxaca decomposition also suggests that foreign banks in Ghana exhibit relatively higher levels of stability compared to local banks. The policy implications of these findings suggest that the liberalisation of the banking sector should be accompanied by an effective micro- and macro-prudential supervisory regime in order to manage the stability of the constituent banks and the banking sector as a whole.

Tavakkoli, Sakineh. "A Systems-level Approach for Integrated Shale Gas Wastewater Management." Thesis, University of Pittsburgh, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=13819974.

Full text
Abstract:

Economic benefits of shale gas production in addition to its potential for enabling energy security are driving the strategic development of unconventional natural gas in the U.S. However, shale gas production poses potential detrimental impacts on the surrounding ecosystems. In particular, sustainable management of high salinity wastewater is one of the critical challenges facing shale gas industry. While recycling shale gas wastewater is a practical short-term solution to minimize total water use in the fracturing process it may not be a viable strategy from a long-term management perspective. Moreover, direct disposal into Salt Water Disposal (SWD) wells which is the most common management strategy in the U.S. is not cost effective in Marcellus shale play due to limited disposal capacity.

This work develops a systems-level optimization framework for guiding economically conscious management of high salinity wastewater in Marcellus shale play in Pennsylvania (PA) with a focus on using membrane distillation (MD) as the treatment technology. Detailed technoeconomic assessment (TEA) is performed to assess the economic feasibility of MD for treatment of shale gas wastewater with and without availability of waste heat. Natural gas compressor stations (NG CS) are chosen as potential sources of waste heat and rigorous thermodynamic models are developed to quantify the waste heat recovery opportunities from NG CS. The information from waste heat estimation and TEA are then utilized in the optimization framework for investigating the optimal management of shale gas wastewater. Wastewater management alternatives ranging from direct disposal into SWD wells to advanced centralized, decentralized, and onsite treatment options using MD are included in the optimization model.

The optimization framework is applied to four case studies in Greene and Washington counties in southwest and Susquehanna and Bradford counties in Northeast PA where major shale gas development activities take place. The results of this analysis reveal that onsite treatment of wastewater at shale gas extraction sites in addition to treating wastewater at NG CS where available waste heat could be utilized to offset the energy requirements of treatment process are the most economically promising management options that result in major economic benefit over direct disposal into SWD.
