Abstract:
Semantic-pragmatic theorizing took a dynamic turn in the 1970s, but at the time the dynamics remained in the pragmatics and retained a more or less traditional static conception of compositional semantics. Later dynamic semantics built rules for context change into the semantics. This essay argues that the phenomena that motivated the dynamic turn are best explained at the pragmatic level, retaining a notion of propositonal content, and a distinction between content and force. It is argued that while a partial notion of propositional content can be recovered from a dynamic conception of semant

Abstract:
In The Order of Things, Foucault failed to distinguish between modern and modernist moments in the epoch beginning around 1800 because he attributed interiority as an epistemic principle to the modern age when this is modernism’s defining feature. Instead, the scalar effects of demographic, scientific, and industrial revolutions define modernity as people came to experience it in their daily lives. Transformations in scale provoked the institutional development of lateral frames or levels. Modern states as nations occupy one level. Hegel took the revolutionary step of merging people as a colle

Abstract:
International and domestic laws commonly hold states responsible for their wrongdoings. States pay compensation for their unjust wars, and reparations for their historical wrongdoings. Some argue that states should incur punitive damages for their international crimes. But there is a troubling aspect to these practices. States are corporate agents, composed of flesh and blood citizens. When the state uses the public purse to finance its corporate liabilities, the burden falls on these citizens, even if they protested against the state’s policies, did not know about them, or entirely lacked cha

Abstract:
This chapter shows how to measure the Hölder regularity of the weak solutions that are constructed when the scheme is executed more carefully. For this aspect of the convex integration scheme, a notion of frequency energy levels is introduced. This notion is meant to accurately record the bounds which apply to the (v, p, R) coming from the previous stage of the construction. The chapter presents an example of a candidate definition for frequency and energy levels. Based on this definition, the effect of one iteration of the convex integration procedure can be summarized in a single lemma, whic
